One will never truly know or understand what it’s like to lose a child unless you have experienced this yourself. What’s even more heart-wrenching is when the death is self -inflicted. On 23 July 2011 I couldn’t begin to imagine the shock and emotion that Amy Winehouse’s family felt when they learned that she was found dead in her Camden home in London. The 27-yearold English singer and songwriter died of alcohol poisoning. Winehouse suffered from substance abuse and mental health issues which not only resulted in her death but also caused public scrutiny during her living years. In various interviews, she admitted to having problems with selfharm, depression and eating disorders. Now, four years later, a haunting documentary dubbed Amy is out depicting Winehouse’s life and her untimely rise and fall. Directed by Asif Kapadia, the man who made the award-winning documentary Senna, Amy tries to portray the real girl behind the name. As a result of hours of interviews, the film features previously unseen footage of the singer and interviews with those closest to her, including her former husband Blake Fielder-Civil and Winehouse’s father, Mitch. As expected, the documentary has caused controversy, with Winehouse’s family slamming the film for being misleading. The family feels that the film insinuates that they didn’t do enough to help her. It’s easy to point fingers and judge when we don’t know the person or the situation. As an ardent fan of the soul songstress, I believe that Winehouse never received the proper recognition she deserved. The media has an uncanny way of distorting the truth. It’s funny how fame is elevated after someone dies. I will be watching the documentary to find the real Amy beneath the beehive, make-up, tattoos and selfinflicted scars.

Raffle tickets for the blanket cost R10. Those interested can contact Green on 082 455 8634 or email sue@joydogs. co.za. To learn more about donating to Cotlands for Oscar’s birthday, visit www.cotlands.org.za ABOVE: Oscar with his cake and the other JOY Dogs Yogi, Jazmine and Yola at Hamlet LEFT: Sue Green and the JOY Dogs at Cotlands The adorable JOY Dogs are giving the phrase “man’s best friend” a whole new meaning – the furry canines are donating their hair to charity. Owner of the JOY Dogs Sue Green has started to use the fur from Yogi, Jazmine, Oscar and Yola to create warm garments. Green collects fur from the dogs and then spins it on a spinning wheel. Once in thread form, the hair is knitted into a variety of items such as a beanie, scarf and waistcoat. “It’s quite a lengthy process,” says Green. Having been involved in dog handling and training for 20 years, Green has a true passion for dogs. “I have always had a special interest in dogs,” she says. Primarily therapy dogs, the JOY Dogs provide various services, spreading joy wherever they go. They visit institutions and hospitals as well as aged care facilities. Active in community projects, the dogs visit companies and provide wellness to staff. They assist in

educational programmes at schools and preschools on responsible pet ownership. Green notes that, after visiting one old age home, the response was very positive. “One said that they wanted the waistcoat while another said they wanted the dogs,” laughed Green. “My aim is to not go into major production – I just want to make garments for the needy,” she says. For the JOY Dogs’ latest fur venture, Green has knitted a blanket for charity. The blanket, which took three months to make, will be raffled for Mandela Day. “I’m raffling the blanket I made to raise funds for Cotlands. The draw will take place on Saturday 18 July for Mandela Day at Cotlands,” says Green. Oscar has also donated his birthday to Cotlands, notes Green. He turned six on Thursday 02 July and celebrated his birthday at the Hamlet School in Turffontein.

By Lizeth Kotze Faf du Plessis lead the Proteas to a 52-run victory over Bangladesh in their first T20 match on Sunday. JP Duminy and Rilee Rossouw also contributed with the bat to set South Africa’s total at 148/4. The Protea bowlers delivered macnificent bowling by getting rid of Bangladesh for 96 in only 19 overs. It seems as if the Proteas are finding themselves in top form. “Both sides bowled spin really well today,” Rossouw said to the media after the match. “Luckily for us we bowled in the second innings and I thought that favoured us a little bit more. We showed good skill and patience

but all in all I thought both teams were good with spin.” Rilee Rossouw said. The 25-year-old also gave credit to Du Plessis for his guidance and leadership during their partnership. “Faf played an immaculate innings,” he said of the captain. “We lost two early wickets but he still took the game to them and played his natural attacking game. He led from the front, he never slowed down, he knuckled down and did the job for the team.” Don’t miss the second T20 match of the series which is taking place today (7 July). MONDEOR SAPS ALERTS Sector 2 Mondeor SAPS has issued an urgent warning to the community to be careful when walking to the shops and back. Make sure you are not being followed – if someone stops you for directions, do not stop to talk to them. Just carry on walking. If you travel with public transport, be cautious when walking to and from home to get to your transport. Sector 2 Mondeor SAPS also reports that gate motors are being targetted and stolen in the area, mainly during the early hours of the morning. Security tips include: bolt your gate motor down; ensure you have a gate motor anti-theft bracket installed; install security beams to protect

the motor; ensure there is enough lighting around your gate and gate motor, and use a company that is legitimate, not someone off the street, when installing or fixing your gate motor. If you become a victim of gate motor theft, do not forget to report it to SAPS by opening a case. In other crime news, dogs are being stolen in the area. For safety reasons puppies must be kept in the back yard when their owners are not at home, during the day or night. It is important to open a case at the station within 24 hours if your dogs are stolen. Please let the Community Forum know, as well as the community at large.

ATTEMPTED HIJACKING IN BASSONIA The Glenvista Community Policing Forum (CPF) reported that on Wednesday 01 July an attempted hijacking took place at 08:00pm outside Tiffany Gardens Complex in Rooigras Street, Bassonia. Three to four suspects in an old gold/brown BMW 5-series followed a resident as she came down Comaro Drive into the cul-desac in Rooigras Street and tried to hijack her outside the entrance to the complex. One suspect got out and approached the

passenger window, trying to break it with a revolver but failed to do so. He then went to the driver’s window and broke it with the firearm. By this time the gate was opening and security guards came out to assist the resident, who pulled off. The suspect dropped his revolver into the car and the suspects fled. Serial numbers had been filed off the weapon. Mondeor SAPS and K-9 unit were on the scene while SAPS forensics arrived shortly thereafter.

Facebook opens

South African office

Going bananas over Bullock’s Minion heels

Social media giant Facebook has opened its first office in South Africa in Johannesburg. Upmarket urban development Melrose Arch in Johannesburg will house Facebook’s African office, the social network said on Monday. Advertising veteran Nunu Ntshingila has also been named the new head of Facebook’s African office. Facebook plans to use the Johannesburg office as a launchpad to grow the social media service in Africa. Facebook also says that more than 80% of its African users access the social network via mobile phones. “This momentum in Africa comes on top of strong advertiser partnerships and excellent adoption of our products across all regions. In Q1 2015, 52% of our total ad revenue came from outside the US and Canada. But we’re just getting started,” said Nicola Mendelsohn, Vice President, Europe Middle East and Africa, Facebook. The social network initially plans to focus on growing its business in “anchor countries” in Africa such as Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. “Other supported territories include Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Mozambique and Ethiopia,” said Facebook in a statement. The monthly cap for Sanral account holders would now be R225, down from R450 per month. Mona said the introduction of the lowered standard tariff, which was now the same as the e-tag tariff, would provide relief to motorists who were not registered. “We remind road users that all aspects of the new dispensation on the Gauteng e-roads will take place over the next 18 months.” Sanral was working with the transport department to implement the new dispensation, which needed software and operational changes. The relief announced for road users that do not have a Sanral account would become applicable once changes had been made to the system. The implementation of the 60% discount

The all-new KIA Sorento, which is now on sale nationwide, is destined to set the cat among the pigeons in South Africa’s large SUV segment thanks to its unique blend of muscular yet elegant style, unrivalled practicality and new technologies. With barely nine months having passed since its global debut 2014 Paris Motor Show, the all-new Sorento is already a multi-award winning vehicle that is taking the success of its predecessor to new levels. In fact, the all-new KIA Sorento represents a notable new level for KIA vehicles. With its smoother, sweptback profile and deeply sculpted surfaces, it introduces the next level of sophistication for the thirdgeneration of KIA’s large SUV. This next-level, premium look and feel is echoed in the Sorento’s spacious and well-appointed cabin, which offers more space for up to seven occupants as well as numerous innovative features. “The all-new Sorento is a key model for KIA due to our affinity for the SUV class of vehicles,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director, KIA Motors South Africa. “The third generation Sorento is especially exciting to bring to market as we make the next step up the quality and refinement ladder. We realise innovation and technology is expected from KIA but we have again brought key conveniences that make owing the new Sorento a driving pleasure.” KIA South Africa will offer the all-new Sorento in four specification grades, ranging from LS and LX at the entry level to the mid-spec EX and top-spec SX.
