Bedfordview hairstylist shares his wisdom about the industry as there is no greater feeling than giving a client the confidence to go out and conquer the world. My small gift to the world is to try to make it a better place. I think it’s important that we strive to do that as much as to succeed personally. People can be particular about their hair, even travelling great distances to see the person they choose. What should a passionate and creative stylist do to attract and retain clients? For me it is ongoing training and education to ensure that clients have the best available to them, whether it’s the latest styles, trends, techniques, technologies or equipment. The key to keeping people is consistency. Make sure your level of professionalism is at one hundred percent at all times. Don’t make excuses or allow anything less.

Shaun Bhudal is a veteran hairstylist in Bedfordview based at Hair@Bedford in Bedford Centre. He recently wrote a chapter for the book Retail Vision and shared his insights into thriving in the hair industry and small business. tame Times caught up with him about it: You are a one-person business within a successful salon of entrepreneurstylists. What inspires you to get up in the morning and keeps you on course through the busy day? My clients and the challenge to fulfill their needs as best I can. I love a challenge and making people happy. My job satisfaction comes with exceeding expectations

Retail is revolutionising as a result of pressure from various market disruptors. What is your approach to thriving in the changing market? Change with it, keep abreast of all the latest advances, and make them work for you. Digital and social media marketing works and it’s free for all to see and use. Keep a strong presence that markets what you do and keeps clients up to date with your progression and how they will benefit. You recently participated in the book Retail Vision: Transformational Business Lessons from a Magical Mall by Robin Wheeler and Independent Retailers at Bedford Centre. What did you gain from the process? Initially it was daunting but after the

coaching with Robin and Resheka I felt more confident. There is definitely something special about writing and this process reminded me just how much I enjoy it. Just as rewarding was reading the stories of all the other people in the mall, seeing their diverse backgrounds and what they have been through to get where they are today. I am motivated and encouraged to work even harder after reading this book and their respective stories. What makes Bedfordview special as a community and client base? The people, without a doubt. They are genuine, hardworking, down-to-earth. They inspire me every day to work hard and not take anything for granted. I am especially grateful for the continued and

loyal support from my clients and friends over the years in this village and community we call Bedfordview.

A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR The COVID-19 virus presents us with an unprecedented set of circumstances that are changing on a day-to-day basis The Department of Health, together with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) have deployed a team to manage the case and implement the necessary steps to contain the situation. The City of Ekurhuleni would like to assure its communities that there is no need to panic as there is no confirmed case of coronavirus disease in the region and in Gauteng at large. While they are aware that there is a sense of worry and panic throughout the country following the confirmed case of COVID 19 in KwaZulu-Natal, the City appeals for calmness as there is no need for panic at this stage. In their efforts to deal with any cases of Corona Virus in our space, the City has established and activated the Outbreak Team, which mainly consists of healthcare workers. The City of Ekurhuleni is also part of the Joint Operation Centre dealing with the outbreak consisting of officials from all spheres of government.

NO NEED TO PANIC ABOUT CORONAVIRUS

The City of Ekurhuleni would like to assure its communities that there is no need to panic as there is no confirmed case of coronavirus disease in the region and in Gauteng at large. While we are aware that there is a sense of worry and panic throughout the country following the confirmed case of COVID 19 in KwaZulu-Natal, the City appeals for calmness as there is no need for panic at this stage. In our efforts to deal with any cases of Corona Virus in our space, the City has established and activated the Outbreak Team, which mainly consists of healthcare workers. The City of Ekurhuleni is also part of the Joint Operation Centre dealing with the outbreak consisting of

officials from all spheres of government. There are no specific measures currently recommended to prevent COVID-2019. However, the following can provide protection against infection with coronaviruses and many other viruses that are more common in South Africa: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer; • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands; • Avoid close contact with people who are sick; • Stay home when you are sick and try

and keep distance from others at home; • Cover your cough or sneeze with flexed elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the bin; • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces; • Avoid contact with farm or wild animals (alive or dead), animal markets, and products that come from animals (such as uncooked meat). While the first cases probably involved exposure to an animal source, the virus now seems to be spreading from personto-person. Thus far the majority of cases have occurred in people with close physical contact to infected persons and healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-2019. Current symptoms reported for patients with COVID-2019 includes, mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing. Reported illnesses have ranged from infected people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. Anyone with any of the symptoms is advised to go to the nearest health care facility. It is a fact that currently there is no vaccine for COVID-2019. Officials in China have intensified efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Leading the City of Ekurhuleni Outbreak Team is Dr Joseph Sepuya and Dr Ronnel Kellerman who can be reached at 082 826 1987 and 084 974 6051, respectively.

Tulisa Park substation in unsanitary condition

Cllr Faeeza Chame visited the Tulisa Park substation after receiving complaints from residents regarding the condition of the substation. Chame reported to tame TIMES that the condition of the substation is horrible and is even being used as a toilet and a dumpsite. “The substation gets vandalized all the time. The vagrants are using it as a toilet and some of our resident’s are using it as a dumping site. City Power should cut this long grass but they don’t. This is an attraction for criminals,” added Chame. She further stressed that the substation should be made safer by building a roof over it and proper gates and a lock should be installed to secure it. “Maintenance should be done on all the substations to prevent criminals getting access. It is the rate payers that suffer the consequences,” concluded Chame.

Wales captain calls on World Rugby to review Marler incident Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones called on World Rugby, the sport’s governing body, to review an incident during his side’s 33-30 Six Nations defeat to England on Saturday when opposition prop Joe Marler appeared to grab him around the groin area. After just 10 minutes of the Twickenham game a melee broke out when Wales had a try disallowed for a George North knock-on, and the incident was caught on camera. “What would you do?” Jones said in a post-match media conference when asked about the incident. “I’ve got 138 tests for my country. If I react, I get a red card. It’s tough, isn’t it? “Hopefully World Rugby will have a look at it. Joe’s a good bloke, lots of things happen on a rugby field. It’s difficult as a captain these days because you can’t speak to a ref about anything, it feels. “I look at the touch judge, obviously he didn’t see what happened and that’s fine. There’s a lot of footage that has been shown, it seems like a lot of supporters saw what happened. “It’s very frustrating that we talk a lot about TMOs and footage reviews, yet there doesn’t seem to be a lot of it happening.” Jones was asked whether the incident should be taken lightly or treated as a more serious matter. “I think it needs to be taken in the context of the game,” Jones added. “But with regards to the judicial panel that rugby has surrounding each game, as players – removing myself and Joe from this and the

game itself – that’s what we need to focus on. Not the incident or the individual.” Saturday’s result was a third consecutive defeat for new Wales coach Wayne Pivac, who replaced Warren Gatland after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The loss leaves his side with just seven points from their opening four Six Nations matches and at risk of falling into fifth place if Scotland beat France in Edinburgh on Sunday. “We played a little bit too much rugby,” said Pivac. “It’s about getting the balance

right. Where we play and when we play. “We will review that game like we do any game. We’ll be tough on ourselves. We’re here to win test matches and we haven’t done that in recent weeks.” England ended the game with 13 men on the field after prop Ellis Genge was shown a yellow card and Manu Tuilagi was then sent off for a dangerous tackle in the final minutes of the game. Wales took full advantage, scoring two converted tries to recover from 33-16 down and claim a losing bonus point.

They also set a new record for the most points they have scored at Twickenham – surpassing the 28 they posted during the 2015 Rugby World Cup. “We were frustrated with conceding those points in the first half,” said Pivac. “We came out and scored just after the break and then we needed to manage the game a bit better. The positive was we kept going and built pressure in the right ends of the field.”

Richardt Ackerman leads Waterkloof Hoerskool to the Cricket South Africa It was always going to be a massive task for SACS, but they gave it full go and were up with the run-rate for most of the innings. They lost a flurry of wickets in the last few overs, however, and ended up 15 runs short. When Daniel Smith (50) and Kai Curran (46) were at the wicket their chances looked good. They put on 78 for the second wicket, before Smith was run out by a brilliant throw from the boundary and SACS were chasing the game from then on. It was Ackerman who did the damage with the ball for Waterkloof. He took 4/17 in his four overs and he was named the man of the match for that performance, along with his 28 not out. Hoërskool Waterkloof the Titans franchise representatives won the 2020 CSA Schools T20 title, beating SACS of the Cape Cobras by 15 runs in the final at the Tuks Oval on Sunday. It was Waterkloof’s 2nd title – they won the tournament in 2011 – and they were good value for their victory in high quality final that saw 357 runs scored – the most in the 11 finals held since the competition was first staged.

Waterkloof batted first and after a slowish start their middle order, led by Hardus Coetzer And Richardt Ackerman, ignited the innings and they eventually got to 186/6 in their two overs. Coetzer ended up on 77 not out, off 54 balls and he struck eight fours and a six . Ackerman made 28 off 12 balls.

Waterkloof’s SW Kemp made 45 in the final, taking his tally for the week to 206 runs. He was named the batman of the tournament and, as he also took wickets in all of Waterkloof’s games, he was also the player of the tournament. Oscar Welsh of SACS took 15 wickets over the four days and was given the bowler of the tournament award.

Summarized scores Final Waterkloof 186/6 (SW Kemp 45, Hardus Coetzer 77 not out, Richardt Ackerman 28 not out). SACS 171/9 (Daniel Smith 50, Kai Curran 46, Kaden Solomons 32; Richardt Ackerman 4/17, Hardus Coetzer 2/26). Waterkloof won by 15 runs. Man of the match – Richardt Ackerman (28 not out and 4/17). Morning games St Stithians 151/5 (Jody de Sousa 38, Liam Mostert 37). Graeme College 127 (Garwin Dampies 3; Thomas Winter 2/16, Liam Mostert 2/6). St Stithians won by 24 runs. Queens 125/7 (Nhlanhla Ntleko 39, Andlile Ngobeni 27; John Lovemore 2/14). Grey High 123/7 (Nicholas Keevy 30, James Hofmeyr 30, Lucky Ntleko 2/22). Queens won by 2 runs. Kearsney 150/8 (Cade Carmichael 37; Hernus Marais 2/13). Waterkloof 112/9 (SW Kemp 29; Matthew McMurray 3/16). Kearsney won by 38 runs. St Andrew’s 107/9 (Reeza Alexander 28; Matthew Klusener 2/18, Michael Levitt 2/12). SACS 109/6 (Daniel Smith 38; Richard Barnes 2/17). SACS won by 4 wickets.
