Catching up with a musician in the South “I believe music brings us all together”
but specializes in turner saxophone. He has worked with some of the biggest artists when house music started coming out for the first time in South Africa. He collaborated with artists like Christos, Da Vinci and DJ Fresh. He’s a widely travelled musician, having played professionally in 21 countries in the past eight years. He was also the first person in the country to start playing saxophone live with DJ’s. He does a lot of traveling and gigs around the world in places like Ibiza and Sri Lanka. George recently got a world record for being the fastest saxophone player on earth. He broke the world record by playing a saxophone while sky diving, “I broke the record and I survived,“ he says. He is grateful to God who gave him the gift, strength and ability to play and bring people together. “I’d also like to thank my mother, I know everybody thanks their mothers, but this woman raised five of us all by herself. If it wasn’t for her I don’t know what would have happened to me,” added George. George is also currently in a relationship with his lovely SiAnne who is also a talented vocalist and a song writer. They have been working together on various projects as well. He advises up coming artists to prepare themselves, develop their skills and to study what they must learn to achieve their dreams. “God can give you the opportunity but you have to take the first step and allow yourself to move forward,” said George.
George is also currently in a relationship with his lovely SiAnne who is also a talented vocalist and a song writer. They have been working together on various projects as well. They say there’s no other instrument in jazz that is more essential than the bass, but the saxophone is just as integral, being both backbone and heartbeat. tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet one of the biggest saxophonists in the country who also plies his trade as a DJ based in Joburg South, George Sax. He was born and bred in Rosettenville, Johannesburg. He was raised by his mother Maria Terrifice who raised all five children by herself. She also has been a radio DJ since 1998. She still has her own show called PannicleVoice. George grew up in a rough and tough neighborhood but it helped make him stronger and more resilient, character traits which are essential in this difficult industry. He studied Law at RAU now known as University of Johannesburg. He studied for a year and then joined a rock band where he played a keyboard at that time. He always loved music but never dreamed of becoming a musician. That’s where he had to make a hard decision.
“I had to make a decision of becoming either a lawyer or an artist because I can’t divide myself. It was like a Kamikaze mission, I knew sacrifices had to be made to follow what I wanted,” said Sax. Deciding to follow his dreams of becoming a musician, George worked at Bassline in Melville in the 80s and early 90s where he met members of the Elite Swingsters and The Jazz Pioneers. They took him under their wing and mentored him, affectionately calling him “grandson”. “They would sit at the bar and teach me licks, invite me to their homes and let me sit in at their gigs,“ said Sax. Sax learned from Mike Makhalemele, Barney Rachabane, Chris Tokalon, George Lee, Ekkie Eckhart, Charlie Sayers, Allen Kwela, Big Voice Jack and Johnny Fourie. “Mac Mackenzie, McCoy Mrubata and Khaya Mahlangu also taught me a lot,” he says. A story from 1990, when South Africa was on a knife-edge, illustrates how Sax was still finding his sea legs in the music world: “When I first

started playing I was introduced to the Elite Swingsters and Dolly Rathebe. It was the year Nelson Mandela was released and things were pretty tense. “At the time I was the token white boy; the band was pretty hard up after years of apartheid and abuse, but they welcomed me in and taught me the art of African jazz. I helped by letting them use my car and my at-the-time limited abilities as a saxophone player. Later in life Sax started playing with DJs in South Africa before he hit Ibiza, to the scorn of many of his fellow musicians. “The jazz and rock community totally ostracised me, claiming that I had ‘sold out’ to electronic music and what I was doing was not ‘real music’,” he says. Sax saw it as a completely new style of jazz — all the elements were there ¬— improvisation, freestyle and spontaneous creativity was what it was all about He studied Fine Arts which helped him a lot in his development as an artist. George plays a range of saxophones, including vintage horn

WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT Johannesburg South Resident Unemployment is fast becoming one of the greatest enemies of our times. Its effects are often worse than some serious illnesses. And with the ever increasing number of unemployed youth, we are at risk of seeing an entire generation going under. If we are going to beat this epidemic, we have to realise that we are going to have to change our mindset and how we think about work and ways to earn income. Entrepreneurship is one of the best solutions we can employ to curb this problem. We need to start encouraging our youth to understand how money works, and how it moves. And we need to empower youth to use their skills and talents to start businesses that can provide for them, and then later enable them to employ others.
Johannesburg South Resident Unemployment is one of the greatest struggles in South Africa for a lot of people. Some are single mothers or elderly people or orphans who have no one but themselves. Our economy does not have the capacity to supply enough jobs to the unemployed let alone to those who are even studying for a specific degree. Unemployment causes most suicides, lack of nutrition or a place to stay, security and stability.

Roger Federer overcomes slow start to topple Lloyd Harris
By: JOVICA ILIC
The eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has kicked off the record-breaking 21st campaign at the All England Club with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over Lloyd Harris. In what has been his debut at the most prestigious event in the world, Harris played on a very high level in the opening set before Roger took charge to march towards the finish line, securing the 96th victory here and entering the second round for the 18th time. Heading to Wimbledon after the tenth Halle crown, Roger stands as one of the favorites for the title alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, showing his skills after that poor opening set and spending less than two hours on the court in the first out of seven obstacles en route to the title. Serving at 56%,
Federer lost just 16 points in his games, losing serve once and delivering six breaks from 12 opportunities to control the scoreboard from start to finish after the opener. He fired 41 winners with 14 unforced errors and it was a flawless performance in the final 80 minutes, leaving the rival far behind despite a valiant effort. Playing with no fear, Lloyd did almost everything right in the opening set, firing seven winners and three unforced errors, playing against only one break point and securing a break at 3-2 when Federer netted a backhand. A service winner pushed the youngster 5-2 up after just 20 minutes and saving a break point in game nine to grab the opener 6-3. Roger should have been in all kind of problems in set number two as well after landing only 47% of the first serve in but no one could have noticed that, dropping only three points behind the initial shot and finding the solution for the rival’s serve that he mastered twice for a 6-1.
The Swiss broke in game four after a massive forehand error from Harris and against at 4-1 to increase the lead and close the opener with a comfortable hold in the next game, gathering the momentum ahead of the third set. There, Federer put in miserable 28% of the first serve but that made no difference, giving away just two points and mounting the pressure on Lloyd who couldn’t deal with it. Roger broke him at 15 with a smash winner at 1-1 and forged a 5-2 advantage with another break before holding at love for a 6-2 and two sets to one lead in swift 79 minutes. Struggling with a left leg injury, Lloyd stood no chance in the fourth set, barely winning any point on the return and allowing Federer to break him in games three and seven, with the Swiss moving over the top with a service winner in game eight for the place in round two.
