Forest High learner claims self-defense in death of fellow pupil
It is with great sadness that the community learned of the death of Grade 10 Forest High School pupil, Daniel Bakwela (16), who was stabbed to death at the school on Monday, 3 June. tame TIMES understands that Bakwela was killed during an alleged gang rivalry fight between the “STK (Stout-
kinders)” and “IDV” gangs. Three learners were reportedly attacked: two were hospitalised but Bakwela died on the scene. Reports confirm that Bakwela allegedly got into a fight with the accused that was on his way to write an exam. It is alleged that after the first exam session the accused was
standing outside the school with his friend. It is believed that Daniel and five other young men attacked the accused. According to TimesLive the mother of the deceased is in mourning and a scuffle involving alleged gang members broke out at the first court appearance of the accused on Wednesday. The pupil accused is 19-year-old Muhammad Mowela, a fellow learner from Forest High School. The 19-year-old states that he “came under attack” and was defending himself, his legal representative said in court on Thursday, 6th of June. According to TimesLive during the bail application Moela submitted a written affidavit, which was read by his attorney Mudi Mavhengani. He argued that it would not be in the interests of justice to be denied bail as he had been attacked by alleged “Stoutkinders” gang members, popularly known as the STKs. “On the day in question, I had come under physical attack by the members of Stoutkinders gang, as they are called. The deceased [Bakwela] dropped a knife that he had in his hand. After I had beaten him with a stone, I then picked up the knife … and stabbed one of the gang members, so that I can run for my life. These gang members chased me as I was running back to the school,” read the affidavit. The National Prosecuting Authority said it did not oppose bail as Moela was not a flight risk. The magistrate, BC Molwana, said he would not make a ruling following material defects in Moela’s affidavit, missing signatures in the prosecution’s affidavit, and because he still had to read up on the school’s policy on age limits and other legislation. The bail application of 19-yearold Muhammad Mowela, was postponed to Monday, 10 June. This story will continue in the next tame TIMES where we will report on the magistrate’s decision on the bail application.

In the previous edition tame TIMES reported on the Brackendowns’ first house that is in state of disrepair. Community members shared their concerns about the lack of maintenance at the property. Following a meeting with the media, the heritage society and residents of Pongola Street on Thursday, 6 June, Cllr Malcolm Maifala reiterated his commitment towards ensuring that the heritage of Brackendowns is preserved. “During the meeting, which follows a couple of weeks where residents have continued to highlight the state of the first house in Brackendowns, I have emphasised my personal desire to ensure the heritage of the area is not destroyed,” said Maifala. Among the issues raised during the meeting included the need for the yard to be cleaned up as a matter of urgency. It is understood that the property continues to be a haven for vagrants. This is a serious concern for residents as incidents of

criminality are at a high level in the area. In addressing this issue, Maifala mentioned that he already started engaging with the Environmental Health Department so that they may assist with cleaning up at the property. “I believe that together with the police we can address this issue. Having considered all aspects regarding the property, it is important that council start taking the lead in ensuring that the heritage of Brackendowns is preserved; furthermore, the house in itself offers an opportunity for the community to have the areas’ historical hub. I strongly believe that the property has a potential of being a place where residents can learn a bit about the history of the area. It is for this reason; I am looking at the possibility of submitting an application to council for the restoration of the property in order for the City of Ekurhuleni to take an active role in preserving its heritage,” said Maifala.

Albertonians to participate in AUDAX 200km cycle ride
Two Albertonians, 39-year old AW Claassens and his step-dad, 62-year old Willie Duvenhage, will attempt the AUDAX 200km cycle ride on Sunday, 23 June in an effort to raise funds for Stepping Stone Hospice. AW has on two previous occasions cycled in the annual 947 Cycle Challenge in aid of Stepping Stone Hospice, but says the AUDAX will be by far the toughest challenge he has ever taken on. “But I’m a proud hospice supporter; I know they need the funds, that’s why I’m doing it.” Willie agrees and says that though this will be a first fundraising attempt from his side for Stepping Stone Hospice, he does consider himself a seasoned cyclist, having done the 947 Cycle Challenge and a few other races before. The spirit of the AUDAX is that of a selfsupporting ride on any form of human
powered vehicle, either alone or with others whilst maintaining an average speed of between 15 and 30kph, from start to finish and in between control points. The route starts at the Circus Tent just off the R59 highway, back to Alberton, from there heading towards Walkerville, Heidelberg, the Vaal area and ending back at the Circus Tent. AW predicts that they should be able to finish in maximum 10 hours “that is of course if everything goes according to plan,” he explains. To support AW and Willie, please go to the link www.backabuddy.co.za/stepping-stone-hospice to make a donation towards their goal of raising R10 000. A brave effort by two brave men for a good cause!
