AfriForum is a non-profit organisation with the main purpose of protecting and promoting the constitutional rights of its members and the communities to which its members belong. We act on behalf of our members in the local community with an established branch in Alberton. The AfriForum branches attempts to plant more than 3000 indigenous trees nationally this year as part of the civil rights organisation’s annual arbour month project. AfriForum annually focuses on both a tree specie that occurs commonly and a scarce tree specie. The common tree for 2019 is the marula (Sclerocarya birrea), while the scarce tree is the apple leaf (Philenoptera violacea). AfriForum’s branch in Alberton hosted a youth leadership with the schools on Saturday, 14 September in our area to plant a tree with the members of the AfriForum branch in Collins Road and Kritzinger Road in Verwoerdpark. The Park on Collins Road and Kritzinger Road Alberton was identified due to the wide open space and not many trees to provide shade for the people that visit that park on a regular basis. The list of trees that was planted on the day was: 2x Celtis Africana = White Stinkwood 2x Combretum Erythophyllum = River Bushwillow 2x Dovyalis Caffra = Kai Apple 2x Searsia Lancea = Black Karee 2x Searsia Pendulina = White Karee 2x Vachellia Karoo – Sweet Thorn All the trees that we planted are indigenous to South Africa.
Trees were planted in honour of tameTIMES and Alberton Community

Former Mrs Africa mentoring girls in Alberton
On Saturday, 31 August The Upper Room Christian Church hosted their Miss Chosen Generation 2019 youth modelling competition in a closing celebration of Women’s Month. Lucinda Pietersen former Mrs Africa 2018 and a beloved Alberton resident agreed to jump on board in April 2019 and offer her services to the church. Lucinda’s main focus has always been to uplift and empower Women and Children. Ray Williams founder of Titulu Arts and Culture approached Lucinda for assistance on behalf of the church and they worked together ever since to ensure the girls were well equipped for the competition. Here’s what Lucinda had to say about her involvement: Working with these girls has been nothing but pure joy. Our youth is faced with so many challenges these days and for me to instill hope, good values
and sound confidence within them is a blessing on it’s own. Through Miraculous Jewel Productions I’ve conducted my youth mentoring and development program where I am able to work with so many kids and coach them. Under M.J Academy I provided the girls with modelling coaching and the basic skills required to partake in this competition. Through my mentorship I believe I have sowed a seed within their lives that goes far beyond this competition. Each girl had a unique personality. Some were extremely shy, others lacked self-confidence due to life experiences and challenges, while some were outspoken and over confident. Each girl learnt something valuable that I know will stay with them forever. I think I’ve drilled these words into them “YOU ARE ENOUGH - YOU ARE CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING ANYTHING - YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN PREVENT YOURSELF FROM SUCCEEDING – YOU CAN DO THIS” so many times during this past 5 months that hopefully they hearing it in their sleep. Watching their progress after each session was remarkable. They blossomed and that was my reward, and it was enough. I am so proud of each one of them. Working with them and seeing their progress didn’t feel fair to award only 3 Winners, I wanted them each to walk away with something as a symbol of remembrance of what they had worked for. So we had the top 3 and 4 Award Winners. As girls we love winning but sometimes it’s not just about the winning but about being apart of the race and what we pick up along the way. The event was a huge success and my heart is sore that I won’t be seeing

Stenson seeks more success in Nedbank Golf Challenge
Henrik Stenson will return to the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player for the first time in three years, when The 2016 Open Champion tees it up in the penultimate Rolex Series event on the 2019 Race to Dubai from November 14 – 17, 2019. The Swede, who lifted the trophy at Gary Player Country Club in 2008, became the first male Major champion from Scandinavia when he triumphed in The 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon three years ago. He recorded a final round 63 in a thrilling battle with Phil Mickelson, which drew comparisons with the legendary ‘Duel in the Sun’ between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977. Stenson’s last appearance in Sun City came in the same year as that famous win, as he went on to top the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex for the second time, after first ascending to the European Number One spot in 2013. As both Sun City and Gary Player Country Club celebrate their 40th anniversary, the 11-time European Tour winner will
aim to claim a second Nedbank Golf Challenge title and his first since the event became part of the European Tour’s international schedule in the 2014 season. The 43 year old has an impressive record in the event, finishing inside the top 10 in each of his last three appearances, including a runner up finish behind Australian Marc Leishman in 2015. Stenson said: “I’ve always enjoyed playing in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and I’m glad that I’m able to get back, especially as Sun City celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. “The last time I played in 2016 it was part of a pretty memorable year for me, and it would be great to mark my return by getting my hands on the trophy again.” Gary Player said: “Our field for the Nedbank Golf Challenge is becoming one of the strongest in golf, and the addition of Henrik Stenson is exciting for our fans. He’s a Major Champion and past winner at Sun City and no doubt seeking a Rolex Series win.
