Influential artist launches an Art Gallery in the South
18 June 2019, Week Volume 09, 23 May 25 2017, Week 21
tame TIMES had the opportunity to meet Shani Krebs who is quite an influential artist with a riveting background. Not only does he have an art gallery at the Mall of the South which he launched two weeks ago but has an autobiography and also mentors students at the Gallery to better their artistic skills. Sentenced to death for drug trafficking at the age of 34, with his sentence commuted to life imprisonment (equivalent to 100 years) in return for a guilty plea, Shani’s story and how his art evolved is truly inspiring. Finally released and returned to South Africa after 18 years of being incarcerated in five different prisons where he was subjected to the most horrendous and dehumanising conditions imaginable. Here he evolved spiritually, rehabilitated himself and developed his artistic skills that surpassed his wildest dreams. His state of mind fluctuated between periods of deep, dark depression to the point of almost wanting to commit suicide. Through his faith in G-D he developed the ability to transcend his reality during which he encountered an out of body experience, claiming to enter the spiritual realm where how he puts it “I was touched by angels”. He further adds that his talent was a blessing, instead of destroying lives with drugs to redeem himself he began to

paint portraits of people bringing joy into their lives. Having no art materials Shani initially designed and fashioned his own paintbrushes by cutting the bristles from a toothbrush and attaching them to a bamboo stick. He then diluted coffee and made birthday greeting cards for other prisoners. In the early years his creations were only drawn in black ballpoint pen, the colour black symbolising his oppression and confinement. Then in January 1999 he was shackled and thrown into solitary confinement, for the first time in his entire life he felt free, a freedom of a contrasting nature and here he managed to organise an A4 drawing pad and basic water colours. Using the faint light that filtered into his cell from the corridor, Shani expressed himself by painting in colour. From thereon he developed and broadened his technique. For works like these to be produced under normal circumstances in a bright, ventilated, well equipped studio would be remarkable in itself. Shani was not only forced to work in cramped conditions with no facilities or equipment. To worsen matters, temperatures averaging 35 – 40 degrees C for most of the year and a humidity factor of 90%, drawing and painting was made all the more complex
and challenging. As time passed, family and friends were able to arrange materials for him, making that aspect of his art a little easier. The works on display are a small collection of his multitude of drawings and paintings done in prison, which range from black and white and colour abstracts to amazing life like portraits, with different works reflecting his state of mind during that period of his imprisonment. Speaking to Shani, tame TIMES learned that Shani is diverse in his own style of art and has no particular culture or target audience that he wants to sell to but provide art work for everyone. “There is something for everybody and I am targeting people that loves art. I also find that there is a huge appreciation out here for art work in the South and I look forward to working out here because there is no other art gallery out here in the South,” said Shani. Besides his completed works, Shani’s art is now in great demand and is being commissioned by people from all over South

Africa and abroad, to complete specific works using the same skills and techniques which he developed in prison. Artist, poet, motivational speaker and author – Shani published his autobiography in 2014 entitled “DRAGONS AND BUTTERFLIES”. It is a fascinating, insightful and absorbing read and not to be missed! Discussions are also underway for the production of a movie. To commission a personal work, please contact Shani: Mobile: 078 6659 656 Email: shanikrebs@hotmail.com

last week Monday. Ahead of the bail hearing, the family of the deceased grade 8 pupil said they hoped the grade 11 suspect would be denied bail. Security concerns have been also raised that should the learner be granted bail, there may be a backlash from the community. The Justice Minister, Ronald Lamola, said he was concerned by the rising levels of violence among young people, and added that his department would consider reviewing the Child Justice Act.

The Marais Viljoen High School u.16 boys hockey team capped their dream season on Tuesday afternoon with a final league win over the much fancied St Benedicts team of Bedfordview. The clash on the St Benedicts astro came about after both teams notched up six wins during the Easterns league season. The match was a sew-saw affair with both teams scoring two goals each, with the Marais Viljoen teams, after a team
effort scoring the winning goal, just a few minutes shy of the end of the game. The final score was 3-2 in favour of Marais Viljoen and its the first time that a Marais Viljoen boys hockey team has won their Easterns league. Two girls hockey teams, the u.16 and u. 15 teams have also qualified for the prestigious North of the Vaal tournament after they came first and second in the respective age groups Easterns leagues.

South African duo claim first positions at this year’s comrade
South African runners Edward Mothibi and Gerda Steyn won the 94th Comrades Marathon that took place in Durban on Sunday, 9 June. Mothibi won the men’s race and Steyn won the woman’s race. Mothibi finished fourth in the 2018 Comrades Marathon which was his first to participate in Bongumusa Mthembu who won last year’s Comrade finished second in this year’s edition of the marathon. The 94th edition of the ultramarathon spans 89km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. 2019 Comrades Marathon winner Mothibi expressed his excitement after his win: “I am very happy, I am excited. All I have to say is, thank you to the people who have supported me through thick and thin.” Whilst Gerda Steyn was the first woman to get to the finish line this year after she finished in the second place last year. Steyn made a time of 5:58:53. This time meant that Steyn broke a 13 year old record set by Russian Elena Nurgalieva of 6.09.24. “I feel so blessed; I cannot believe that this dream came true for me today. It’s all thanks to God because today I had strength that I don’t know where it came from,” she said. She further said that her comrade record victory was sweeter because she narrowly missed the record of 06:09:23
at the Two Ocean ultra-marathon. “I am happy I broke the record on the most important run race which is the comrade marathon but that was not on my mind”In an interview with David O’Sullivan on the Kaya fm breakfast show following their comrade triump both athletes emphasised the importance of having a proper preparation. “Athletes must take proper care of their bodies for their recovery process to be easy and smooth. You must watch what you eat healthy food manage your diet with care,” said Steyn “I went to the comrade with one think in mind, which was to finish in the top 10. I did not think I will win the race but it happened because I did not give up I just run my normal split but when I got to the last 8 km I started believing because I realised I was still going with the same pace,” said Mothibi
