Glenanda Primary gives back to Hospice that supported their teacher
This is not the first time Glenanda Primary has assisted and acknowledged the work Stepping Stone Hospice does. A Flip-flop civvies day on 28 March 2018 at Glenanda Primary led to two laptops and a cash donation of R2120 handed over to Stepping Stone Hospice. The Grade 3 learners at Glenanda Primary early donated R30 400 to Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services, funds raised in memory of one of their Grade 3 teachers who passed away at the Stepping Stone Hospice’s in-patient unit in January this year. The funds were generated through a Cake & Candy sale held earlier this year. CEO of Hospice, Tersia Burger, attended the schools assembly on Thursday, 10 October, and in accepting the cheque, thanked the learners and the staff of the school for their kindness, assuring them that the funds will be used to “continue the care provided to those facing the effects of a life-limiting illness.” With October being Hospice Awareness Month and Friday, 11 October dedicated
to the 21 million children worldwide in need of palliative care, Tersia also asked the learners to wear a hat on the day as part of the #HATSON4CPC campaign. Head of the Grade 3’s, Mrs Previna Naidoo, then sent a photo of a group proudly displaying their hats on the day. The laptops are now used in the new newly established Centre for Palliative Learning at Stepping Stone Hospice.

Meals on Wheels continues its drive to feed the hungry
Proud moment for Marist Brothers Linmeyer learners and parents

Meals on Wheels hosted their big Cooka-Thon on Wednesday, 16 October at Nasrec, in Johannesburg South. On the day, the company fed 10 000 underprivileged people, which was one of their biggest Cook-a-Thons and the biggest group they’ve fed in a day in one Region in their years of operation. Meals on Wheels, the Department of Education and the Department of Social Development joined forces to feed the hungry. The event was held on World Food Day, which is celebrated yearly to promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets and access for food for all. Meals on Wheels Community Services South Africa is a fully-fledged and recognised non-profit organization that believes that hunger is the extreme ma-
terialization of poverty and human deprivation and therefore attempt to mitigate this by feeding the poorest of the poor. The company says about 11 million people in South Africa do not know where their next meal will come from, or when. They distribute food to more than 210 communities and schools countrywide. The company, which started in 1964, distributes more than 1.5 Million food packs in a month country wide. The company also runs programmes such as Skills Development, Make-Over Projects and Food Gardens. According to a report by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization on the state of food security, more than 814 million people in developing countries are undernourished. Of these, 204 million live in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa.
It is a very proud moment for the Marist Brothers Linmeyer High School learners who were elected 2020 Head Prefects and awarded the prestigious Marist Brothers Blue Blazer, and their parents. These Grade 11 students, Nikiesha Jose (Head Girl, Honours Blazer), Adam Leicher (Head Boy, Colours Blazer), Carina
Lopes (Deputy Head Girl, Honours Blazer) and Ronan Kalil (Deputy Head Boy, Honours Blazer), have diligently gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve their school. Their Blue Blazers are testament to their hard work and dedication. Congratulations, we are extremely proud of you!

RWC 2019 results and highlights: Japan 3-26 South Africa The Springboks are into the semi-finals of the 2019 Rugby World Cup thanks to a tense victory over hosts Japan in Tokyo on Sunday. The Springboks will take on Wales next weekend for a place in the final against either New Zealand or England after having to work mightily hard to see off the Japanese. A perfect South African start dampened the frenzied atmosphere in the Japanese capital. Taking advantage of their dominance in the first scrum of the night, Faf de Klerk sneaked his pass to the blindside before Makazole Mapimpi powered his way into the corner for the opening try. Japan kept coming and were given a helping hand when Tendai Mtawarira was sent to the sin bin in the 11th minute. Tipping opposite number Keita Inagaki beyond the horizontal in the tackle, the experienced prop was a little lucky to avoid a red card from referee Wayne Barnes. His absence cost just the three points, with Yu Tamura kicking a straightforward penalty following the unusual sight of the South African scrum going backwards. A flurry of red and white attacks fol-
lowed his return to the field, but the Bok defence held firm to keep Japan at arm’s length as the sides somehow failed to add another point before half time. Handre Pollard took an early chance from the kicking tee straight after the break, sneaking the lead out to five points. He repeated the feat soon after with Mtawarira instrumental in winning the penalty at the scrum, with Japan’s first half intensity having dissipated. Over went a third, at the second time of asking, as the Springboks began to turn the screw. Their reward came on 65 minutes when a rumbling maul allowed Malcolm Marx to burst free before offloading for De Klerk to go in unchallenged. And it was job done a couple of minutes later. Captain Siya Kolisi ripped the ball in the tackle before Pollard and Willie le Roux combined to set Mapimpi free for his second. It wasn’t a classic performance but it was an effective one, with the Boks successfully taking the sting out of a frenzied evening to keep their World Cup dream alive as the hosts bowed out.
Alberton High learners shine in Spur Mountain Biking League
The 2019 Multi-terrain cycling Anatomic Spur school series has been an incredibly exciting and rewarding season. The Alberton High Team is growing year on year and this year saw 19 official cyclists registered to race in the series. The sport of school MTB racing has grown exponentially over the last 12 years when only 20 riders competed in the very first race. The sport is rapidly becoming a popular school activity and the growing numbers have resulted in the Spur Mountain Biking League being separated into North and South regions. The season runs from April to September throughout South Africa with 11 Spur MTB regions, over 13000 entries and more than 500 schools being represented. Gauteng has eight regions and is divided into Gauteng North and Gauteng South where an average of 650 riders participates at each event. The Gauteng Inter-Schools Finals takes place in October at Bekker High School in Magaliesberg where the top 60
schools compete against each other. Points are awarded for the schools based on the number of riders that start each race and on where they placed within their age categories. These points will count for the school logs as well as the individual logs. These points are tallied up at the end of the season and determine which schools and riders seeding qualify for the InterSchools Finals. The first race of the season took place at Phoenix High School in Vereeniging on Saturday, 18 May. The course consisted of 4.2 km laps with two technical obstacles. The riders were sub-divided into age categories, namely the sub junior girls and boys, youth 15, youth 16, and junior women and men. The number of laps required to be completed depended on the age category, starting from two laps for the sub junior groups and ending with five laps for the junior men. There were 48 different high schools that participated on the day with Alberton High placing 25th. A really good
start to the season for a small amount of riders! The second Spur Gauteng MTB race took place at the Boksburg Stadium on Saturday, 13 July. The day started bright and early with 729 official entries registered to race. The AHS MTB Team entered 13 of their riders at the Boksburg Stadium where they competed in their respective categories. The laps were over a distance of 6.2 km’s and the trails were incredibly dusty and windy with several specifically engineered jumps. Several of their riders were seeded amongst the top 50 riders in their respective category. The very first ‘Battle of the Regions ‘ MTB Race took place on 3 August at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria and the organizers of the event are hoping it will become an annual event. The Spur Schools Mountain Biking League held their third Gauteng South MTB race at the Voortrekker Monument Biking Park on Saturday, 10 August. The Alberton High School MTB Team turned up in force and rode brilliantly on the day. The course was technical with steep inclines and declines to test the most experienced riders’ skills. Laps were exactly five km’s in distance. The 11 riders that competed on the day did Alberton High school and their sponsors Suzuki JHB South and IPOP Bassonia proud and brought forth amazing results. More than five of their riders have seeded again in the top 50 riders in their respective age group categories and several fell just outside the top 50 seeding. Alberton High School placed 23rd out of 57 schools in the Gauteng South division. The AHS MTB Team also competed in several private races to maintain their fitness levels and increase their endurance. Their
training was led by Donovan and Christopher McGee, the captains of the team in conjunction with several coaches and assisted by Wendell at Thaba Trails. The training this year focused mainly on outdoor training on different terrains with intermittent fitness and endurance training. The Final race for the season took place at St Stithian’s in Sandton on Saturday, 24 August. There were 603 entrants across the various categories that competed on the day. The laps consisted of an equal amount of inclines and declines with medium technicality. Laps were 5.2 km in distance and the laps increased accordingly to the various age groups. The fastest lap time recorded on the day was 13 minutes 26 seconds. Thirteen members of the AHS MTB Team participated and did phenomenally well with their completed laps and recorded times. There were a few tumbles along the way with some scraps and broken bike parts but that is the sport – extreme fun and speed on a dusty terrain. AHS MTB Team can be very proud to have maintained their 23rd position out of 57 competing Gauteng South schools.
