ILLEGAL tablet manufacturing plant found in Brackenhurst house tame TIMES learned that SAPS and the Johannesburg Flying Squad raided a house in Brackenhurst (2 Esserman Street) where they found illegal manufacturing products on Tuesday, 18 June. Hawks spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the flying squad unit acted upon information from a source about suspicious activity at the house. Reports indicate that the police called the Hawks for backup when they realised the amount of illegal manufacturing products at the house. Immune system boosters, sexual enhancement pills such as Viagra and Kamagra, herbal antibiotics, medication for treating asthma and hypertension were being produced illegally at the house.
“The police followed up on the information that led them to a house in Brackenhurst, where they were initially refused entry. The house was searched after the police gained entry. Different types of tablets and machines used to manufacture the tablets were found,” police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said in a statement on Tuesday, 18 June. The plant was situated inside an apartment at the back of the house. The owner was arrested and taken to Brackendowns police station. tame TIMES learned that the suspect was a Chinese lady. She appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 19 June. The suspect was released on bail and her case was postponed to 16 August.
Alberton SAPS officers awarded for wonderful service The Alberton SAPS officers were honored and recognized as good performing officers at a station lecture with their station commander Doctor Sibuyi. The station lecture took place at the CID unit parade hall on Wednesday, 12 June. Alberton SAPS Spokesperson Capt Manare Ramotshela said that it was highlighted that in order for the station to perform well, all members were required to be committed in their different offices. “All units attended for the sole purpose of aiming to be the best performing station,” said Ramotshela. The members were also issued certificates for the outstanding performance. The members were encouraged to remain positive as that it may be to their advantage once the promotional posts are advised. Capt Ramotshela encouraged the SAPS mem-
bers to serve the community with pride. “The criminals out there must not forget that we are having no room for them and that we are here to combat crime,” added Ramotshela. A lot of words of appreciation were shared by the management team especially by the station commander Doctor Sibuyi.

Gauteng still the hijack capital of South Africa When it comes to car hijackings, Gauteng comes out tops (23 per day), followed by KwaZulu Natal (7 per day) and Western Cape (6 per day) according to the official 2018 SAPS statistics. This effectively means 45 cars are hijacked every day in these three South African provinces and the majority of these occur in home driveways. According to Briefly.co.za, the five most hijacked cars in South Africa include the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Hilux and other Toyota models, Ford Ranger, BMW X5 and Chevrolet Spark. Briefly.co.za says these models are selected based on their demand in the market and the prospect of valuable items being found in luxury vehicles. Private Security company, Fidelity ADT, says with over 60% of all hijackings taking place close to home, knowing what to look out for and how to prevent falling prey to hijackers is a very pertinent topic. Within the Fidelity ADT footprint Mondays and Tuesdays have shown the highest number of reported hijackings. “There also appears to be a slight uptick around 13:00-14:00 which could be due to increased traffic during lunch hours. The highest number of reported incidents in our experience however tend to take place between 19:00 and 20:00 during peak traffic times and where there is reduced visibility at night,” says Hattingh. “Being aware of your surroundings and knowing how to respond if you find yourself in a hijacking situation is critical,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing & Communications Manager of Fidelity ADT.
mate they will seldom follow you. • If you stay in a secure complex with security guards, do not be fooled into thinking you are safe. You can easily be followed into your complex so always remain vigilant. Research shows that most people relax the closer they get to home and this is often when they are most vulnerable. In the unfortunate event that you are hijacked, how do you give your car over in a non-threatening manner? “The first and golden rule is to not antagonise the hijackers who are probably more scared than you are. You need to show them you are not a threat. Lift up your arms to show you have no weapon and will surrender. Use your left arm to undo your seatbelt and put your car in neutral.” Do not turn off your car, says Hattingh, and get out slowly. “Try and angle your body sideways so you are not facing a firearm head-on. Also remember to protect your head with your arms and avoid direct eye contact with the hijackers but try to take in what they are wearing, the sound of their voices, etc. Most importantly try to remain calm,” she concludes.
Fidelity ADT has partnered with the National Hijack Prevention Academy to offer drivers the following safety hints and tips: • If you suspect you are being followed, put your indicator on and slow down at least two to three houses prior to your home. If you are being followed, you will force the vehicle behind you to pass and this could cause the criminals to lose interest. • If you need to stop in your driveway to manually open the gate, always leave the key in the ignition and the motor running unless you have a child in the car. Only then should you take the key with you as you open the gate. The key is a valuable negotiating tool – they want your car and you want your child. • Always make sure you can see the back wheels of the car in front of you when you stop in the traffic. This gives you enough room to maneuver and escape. • Don’t fall for the “tap tap” trap where a driver taps the back of your car in traffic. They often use lady drivers as decoys here. Never get out of your car on the scene to assess the damage but rather drive to a busy location. Signal to the other driver to follow you. If it is not legiti-

Zelda van Coller’s tips for keeping your sight … even when getting older
Vision loss doesn’t have to be a symptom of getting older. There are many solutions for age related vision loss, we just have to be aware of them and make this priority. Most vision problems are preventable and by making eye care a part of your everyday lifestyle, you can save your eyesight. According to Zelda van Coller, owner and optometrist at Zelda van Coller Optometrists, scheduling an eye test every twelve months and knowing what your status is can set you up for a lifetime of great vision. As we age, our eyes go through age-related changes, with most changes occurring after the age of 60 and beyond. “In your 40’s it is difficult to get away from Presbyopia (farsightedness) as our eyes lose the ability to focus on nearby objects. This is due to the intra-ocular lens that becomes less flexible.” “You also have increased risk of experiencing dry eyes and 40 is the age when most people will find that computer vision syndrome gets worse. At 50 a great number of people experience an increase in cataracts or the start thereof, glaucoma and macular degeneration and presbyopia becomes more advanced. Women can also experience an increase in dry eyes after menopause. At 60 your ability to see well in low-light conditions can decrease. Some other disturbing age-related eye changes can cause visual disturbances such as spots and floaters.” “More serious age-related eye disorders that can have greater potential to affect our quality of life as we grow older include the following conditions: glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Your risk of get any of these increases with age.” “Other age-related disorders to look out for include reduced pupil size, dry eyes, loss of peripheral vision (where the size of your visual field decreases), decreased colour vision,
vitreous detachment where the gellike vitreous pulls away from the retina. This will be detected by your optometrist at your yearly eye exam.” Van Coller gives tips on how to prevent vision loss as you are getting older: Make sure to wear sunglasses with lenses that have 100% UV protection to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Don’t forget that UV rays are dangerous to your eyes all year around. Ask your optometrist on advice for 100% UV protected eyewear. A healthy diet is important to having healthy eyes. Make sure to eat foods that contain omega 3 oils and are rich in vitamin A. Ask your optometrist about the latest anti-oxidant supplements that is proven to help with prevention of age-related eye diseases. Physical activity is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your eyes because it reduces your chances of developing Type II Diabetes. Diabetes can be detrimental to your vision if not well controlled. Just remember to wear protective eyewear when doing outdoor activities. Eyes need to rest. Remember to take breaks and close your eyes for a while. If you are sitting in front of a laptop for long hours, make sure to look up approximately every 20-30 minutes and try to focus on something far away. “Have an Optometrist help you maintain healthy eye sight, because when it comes to your eyes prevention is the cure. Discuss all your vision concerns with your optometrists as what seems like a small problem to you can cost loss in vision in the long run. Also, inform your Optometrist of any medications you are taking as these can have an impact on eyesight.” Keep your eyes healthy and have them functioning at their optimum level throughout your lifetime, concludes van Coller. Your eyes influence your quality of life and should not be neglected.

On Youth day, I took the opportunity to spend time with my loved ones and enjoy each other’s company. In our tradition food represents togetherness, culture and celebration and for the occasion, I made a traditional Roast Portuguese Chicken. After some good food, we had some fun and games, which included a competitive game of Thirty seconds and Uno.
Youth day was very relaxed this year for me. Seeing that fathers day was on the same day and on a Sunday there was not much to do but to spend the day with people who enjoy one’s presence. I had a blast with my girlfriend, we had lunch at Eastgate and watched Avengers Endgame and to top of the youth day we had a nice Sunday drive with love songs.

For Youth day, I had the privileged of handing out scarves and caps to young kids between the ages of 2 and 16 years to keep them warm for the winter nights ahead. Our “Girls for Change” group, which is part of the URSCA Ennerdale Church, walked the dusty streets of an informal settlement b e t w e e n Ennerdale and Lawley, South of Johannesburg. The warmth of their appreciation made the cold walk worth it.
We recently received the gift of another grandson (we have 2) so we grabbed at the opportunity to spend Youth day with our kids. Playing games with the eldest grandkid, (jumping on the trampoline, chasing him around the house, wriggled around the floor) and handled the baby as much care as possible. Also got the chance to cook everyone’s favourite spaghetti and mince dish.

On Youth day, I decided to go visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum. It was the perfect day to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 16 June 1976 in Orlando West, Soweto. The grounds are so significant because it is the site where the young Hector Pieterson was shot and killed and many other school children were wounded after police opened fire on their protest march.

10 LALIGA STARS SET TO LIGHT UP THE 2019 COPA AMERICA Real Madrid fans will be eager to see their new defender Militao in action for Brazil, with the 21-year-old’s athleticism and understanding of the game impressing hugely at former club Porto. The Sao Paolo native, who’ll move to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer for a fee reported to be around €50 million, should bolster an already-packed Brazil defence.
4. Arthur Melo [Barcelona and Brazil] Arthur’s first LaLiga campaign could not have gone much better, with the intelligent playmaker settling in quickly at the Camp Nou and playing a key role in their LaLiga title win. Having drawn comparisons to Barça and Spain legend Xavi Hernandez – who said that Arthur could “mark an era at Barcelona” – for his composure on the ball and ball-playing abilities, Arthur will be a mainstay in the Brazilian midfield for many years to come.
With the latest instalment of the historic tournament having kicked off this past Friday in Sao Paolo, here are 10 LaLiga stars who are set to showcase the best that Spanish football has to offer. This year’s tournament will see 25 players from LaLiga compete for the continental title, more than from any other European competition. 1. Lionel Messi [Barcelona and Argentina] Barcelona and Argentina captain Messi will be aiming for his first trophy with his country, having had a stellar personal 2018/19 campaign when he scored 36 goals in 34 games on the way to a record-
breaking 10th career LaLiga Santander title. The man to watch, as always. 2. Giovanni Lo Celso [Real Betis and Argentina] Creative midfielder Lo Celso was a revelation on loan at Real Betis from Paris Saint Germain last season, with nine goals and five assists in 32 LaLiga games for the always entertaining side from Seville. The Argentine, who made his transfer permanent in April, is no doubt a future star of the world game and will be key in Argentina’s quest for a first Copa America title in over 25 years. 3. Eder Militao [Real Madrid and Brazil]
5. Santiago Arias [Atletico de Madrid and Colombia] Attack-minded right-back Arias had an impressive first year in LaLiga with Atletico de Madrid. The man from Medellin is highly favoured by Diego Simeone and also Colombian coach Carlos Queiroz; Arias has picked up almost 50 senior caps since making his international debut back in 2013. 6. Fede Valverde [Real Madrid and Uruguay] Rangy and composed midfielder Valverde was a real bright spot amid a difficult campaign for Real Madrid last season, establishing himself as an important squad member at the Bernabeu despite being just 20 years old. The Montevideo native, who started his career at Peñarol before moving to the Spanish capital in 2016, has cemented his place in the na-
tional squad since scoring on his debut against Paraguay in 2017. 7. Maxi Gomez [RC Celta and Uruguay] It was not always easy as Celta battled relegation last year, but bullish centreforward Gomez continued his development with a hugely important 13 goals in 35 LaLiga Santander games. Strong, decisive and deadly in the air, the Uruguayan is the latest in a long line of world-class strikers to play for La Celeste. 8. Gaku Shibasaki [Getafe and Japan] Japan’s guest appearance means more time in the spotlight for Getafe’s creative midfielder Shibasaki, who has famously scored iconic goals against both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Gaku, who made the move to Europa League candidates Getafe from CD Tenerife in 2017, will provide the creative spark in the Japanese midfield in Group C where they face Uruguay, Ecuador and Chile. 9. Guillermo Maripan [Alaves and Chile] 25-year-old Alaves centre-half Maripan was a rock at the back for LaLiga surprise package Alaves last season, when the Basque side’s success was based on team organisation and solid defence. The Santiago-born centre-back, who started out at Universidad Catolica, will be looking to take the step up to widespread international recognition this summer. 10. Roberto Rosales [Venezuela and Espanyol] Former Malaga right-back Rosales was immense in Espanyol’s late season surge, hitting a vital goal on the final day as the Catalans clinched Europa League football next year. He’ll be key for the Vino Tinto down the right flank.
