Department of Education involved to resolve dispute as 20 teachers continue to be absent. On Friday morning, 15 March, frustrated parents fetched their children from Glenview Primary and met with the School Governing Body to discuss the issue of absent teachers.

Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said: “As the department, we’re disappointed that we did not have a fruitful curriculum happening at the school.”

Parents raised their concerns regarding what is believed to be an unpleasant school environment. It is reported that teaching and learning have been disrupted as a result of the ongoing dispute between a head of department, the principal and two other officials. tame TIMES received calls from parents who were forced to fetch their children from the school earlier on this month after classes were disrupted. Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said: “As the department, we’re disappointed that we did not have a fruitful curriculum happening at the school.” According to Mabona, the 20 teachers at Glenview have been absent since 6 March. The 20 educators who include 13 department employees and seven employed by the school governing body (SGB), have reportedly not gone to work due to being ill. Educators have attributed their illness to stress and 10 of the employees have reportedly submitted medical certificates. MORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW.

METROPOLITAN HEALTH DONATES R400K TO HELP YOUNG BURN VICTIMS

Metropolitan Health presented a cheque for R400 000 to Surgeons for Little Lives to help reduce sepsis related mortality among young burn victims admitted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) Paediatric Burns Unit. Dr Solly Motuba, Chief Commercial Officer for Metropolitan Health, says in 2018, the Burns Unit at the hospital admitted 588 patients, up from 459 in 2017, an increase of just over 28%. “While the number of patients increased significantly, the capacity of the unit remained unchanged with 19 beds in three wards and seven isolation beds in the paediatric burns intensive care unit (PBICU). “Mortality amongst burn victims is caused largely by hospital acquired infection. The

responsible organisms are often resistant to common antibiotics, making it even more difficult to combat the problem,” he adds. Factors that lead to the infections include the flow of patients and staff within the unit, a lack of isolation cubicles for infected patients, and the lack of a decontamination cubicle at the entrance and exit to the ICU. The donation by Metropolitan Health has been earmarked by Surgeons for Little Lives, a non-profit company started by the Department of Paediatric Surgery at WITS University, to re-engineer the flow within the Paediatric Burns Unit at the hospital and add as many isolation cubicles as possible. Surgeons for Little Lives goal is to reduce

infection-related mortality to below 6 percent, which is more closely aligned to the global standard of between three percent and five percent. The donation forms part of MMI Holdings and Metropolitan Health’s investment in local community projects and ongoing efforts to help address health issues affecting South Africans. Dr Mothuba says interventions such as these are important as they help reduce some of the pressure on the country’s overburdened public healthcare system. “Most importantly, this initiative presents an important opportunity to give children who suffer burn-related trauma access to enhanced medical care and a better chance of survival.”

Police spokesperson Capt. Jeff Phora said the women were gunned down between 4am and 5am on the corner of Theunissen and Slabbert streets. They have since been identified on social media as Mary Abbott Coetzee and Chanty Duvies Barnard. Two people were also shot on the corner East and Augusta roads in Regents Park about 3km, from South Hills where the police found cartridges and blood at the crime scene. “The scene started in Regents Park where the suspect also shot at two people, but at this stage we don’t know where these victims are.” He said the police were contacting local hospitals to find out if they had admitted any shooting victims. It is unclear if the two shootings are connected.

EKURHULENI CITY MANAGER CONDEMNS THE ATTACK OF EMERGENCY SERVICE OFFICERS

Ekurhuleni’s City Manager Dr. Imogen Mashazi condemns the barbaric attacks of the emergency service’s officers while on duty. Dr. Mashazi said this while visiting an injured fire fighter Rovhiwa Mohlola (35) in hospital. Mohlola sustained gunshot wounds while attending to an injured patient over the weekend in Dukathole Informal Settlement in Germiston. “We urge the members of the public to protect the emergency services workers when they are out there to save lives. An attack on the officers defeats the purpose of saving lives, which is what they are here for,” lamented Dr Mashazi, wishing Mohlola a speedy recovery. The city manager further explained that such incidents were a common occurrence in the recent past, forcing the City to embark on a publicity campaign to expose the dangers faced by emergency services personnel when attending to life threatening emergencies and fires in the region. “These attacks are senseless and unwarranted because these employees are putting their lives on the line to save other fellow humans,” she continued. “As a city we shall forever be grateful to these men and women for the sacrifice and dedication to public service.” Furthermore, Dr Mashazi gave an undertaking that the injured Rovhiwa and the rest of the team that was on duty with her on the day of the incident would receive counseling and other related support towards their full rehabilitation from the city’s Social Development.
