Sixteen people injured in Kliprivier collision

A LETTER TO THE

EDITOR Dear Editor This year’s South African Book Fair sees a diverse spread of emerging talent join more established voices for a three-day programme of events brimming with things to do for everyone from pre-schoolers to the most dedicated book lovers. This commitment to showcasing debut talent brings together an ever-growing group of authors who are not only talented in their respective genres, but for which Pan-African discourse is of paramount importance. This deeply enriches what the fair is offering. The reclamation of our voices has revolutionised the way we tell #OURSTORIES - the thread for SA Book Fair 2019. The fair opens with three new and powerful female voices. Letshego Zulu lost her racing driver Gugu Zulu on Mount Kilimanjaro. Gabi Lowe is the author of Get Me To 21, which recounts her daughter Jenna’s dream to live to the age of 21. Ndileka Mandela is the eldest granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, a role that came with a lifetime of challenges and expectations. With reclamation comes repatriation – and Phehello Mofokeng, Lorato Trok and Tuelo Gabonewe will be paying homage, in a conversation led by Sabata-mpho Mokae, to their love of Setswana and rehoming the classics. Dr Gcina Mhlophe will be leading the debut poetry talent featured on a very special tour of Constitution Hill on Saturday. From the austere halls of the Women’s Jail to the Anglo-Boer War era fort, the stark concrete of the Men’s Jail where many Apartheid activists were incarcerated and the symbolic architecture of the modern Constitutional Court where the battle for freedom continues, the tour includes moving performances by Tshepo Molefe and Fumane Ntlhabane along the way.

Sixteen people were injured after a bakkie and taxi collided on the R59, Kliprivier on Thursday, 22 August. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 07:25 along with many other emergency service providers including the Fire Department. ER24 tended to two women in their 30s who required Advanced Life Support interventions before being transported to a private hospital in Alberton for further care. Provincial EMS treated and transported two patients and two other private services transported the other 12 patients to the same hospital in Alberton. Metro Police were also on scene for further investigation.

The large portrait touchscreen takes some getting used to, but is superb once you’ve got your head around it. You can even hook it up to an optional 1,400 watt, 19-speaker stereo. The seats are sublime too, and only add to the soothing feeling of being inside the S90. This vehicle has plenty of room for those with long limbs. The safety feature includes pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection and front collision warning with full auto brake. The Volvo has been designed to provide comfortable and relaxing progress and is a must buy. It’s a drive that can change your life.

Experiencing the Volvo S90 D5 AWD Geartronic Inscription is awesome and it is Sweden’s latest take on the German executive saloon. The Volvo S90 takes the traditional threebox Volvo shape and brings it bang up to date with XC90 styling cues. It’s bold, but in a class dominating style. The elegant S90 with uncluttered and crafted natural materials is a luxury sedan like no other. The bright silver metallic colour stands out and displays a formal business class car that attracts the eye. The four-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine gives off 173 kW @ 4000 rpm of power and an impressive 8-speed automatic gear box.

Women’s Day had a little more glam and sparkle than usual this year when Alberton Figures Finesse Talent and Modelling Agency held their second last showcase and graduation event at the Bracken Park Hall. The theme was Powerful Patterns and many a beautiful ethnic outfit graced the student’s bodies. The stage was set for an eyeful of bright colourful patterns and amazing sequences that the students choreographed themselves. Over 100 stu-

Alberton High Mountain Bikers Peddle to Glory The Spur Schools Mountain Biking League recently held their third Gauteng South MTB race at the Voortrekker Monument Biking Park on Saturday, 10 August. The school series is in full swing and fierce competition has been witnessed amongst the competing schools. The Alberton High School MTB Team turned up in force and rode brilliantly on the day. The course was technical with steep inclines and declines to test the most experienced riders’ skills. Laps were five km’s in distance, starting with 2 laps for the sub juniors and ending with 4 laps for the junior men. The 11 riders that competed on the day did Alberton High school and their sponsors

Suzuki JHB South and IPOP Bassonia proud and have brought forth amazing results. More than five of their riders have seeded in the top 50 riders in their respective age group categories and several fall just outside the top 50 seeding. Alberton High School is currently placed #23 out of 57 schools in the Gauteng South division. With one last school series race to go, the AHS MTB Team are hard at work training to build up their stamina and endurance. The final series race is on the 24th of August at St Stithians in Sandton. Good luck to the AHS MTB Team for the last leg of the series – may the wind be behind your back and give you wings to fly around the track…
