DA calls for transparency in relocating of Sakhile Informal Settlement dwellers DA Katlehong South Constituency Head According to More, the current process is causing a stir in the community and has put the lives of the local leaders and the beneficiaries of the new houses at risk. MPL More has challenged the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile and Ekurhuleni MMC for Human Settlements, Lesiba Mpya to produce a proper plan for the relocation and address the current challenges in the relocation process faced by community members in Sakhile Informal Settlement

The Democratic Alliance is concerned about the process followed by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and Ekurhuleni Department of Human Settlements to allocate the rightful beneficiaries to the newly developed housing project in Palmridge. The relocation of the residents of Sakhile Informal Settlement to the new housing development in Palmridge has been necessary for quite some time

as this informal settlement is situated on land that is not suitable for human habitation as the area is dolomitic. “We have be informed that the beneficiaries have been called to a local hostel office to sign an allocation form and their old homes were marked. They were then shown their new houses. The beneficiaries are not allowed to move in immediately as they have been ordered to wait in their old homes for the official handover,” said Lebo More,

It is alleged that the community leaders of Sakhile Informal Settlement in Katlehong and the beneficiaries have been attacked by those that have not yet been allocated a house.

“The DA believes that the housing allocation must be transparent and that only the rightful beneficiaries must benefit. This process must also seek a solution for those that did not qualify for this project so that they can also be assisted through other housing

EKURHULENI RAPID LAND RELEASE SET IN MOTION The City of Ekurhuleni is steaming ahead with its rapid land release programme. The City is releasing 56 farms at a value of R120 million to previously disadvantaged local smallholding and subsistence farmers to improve food security, increase tax and revenue base for the City, expand food exports and attract new investments into the City. The initiative will also enhance the quality of life for residents in the City and increase the number of job opportunities in the region. Over 1 000 hectares of land will be released to the beneficiaries in a programme that will generate about R200 million in revenue for the City, through medium-term leases in addition to other economic benefits. The City is in a process of finalising economic partnership agreements with private sector companies, government agencies, development finance institutions, industry bodies, farmers’ associations, research institutions and training organisations. The City’s agriculture development and support programme, of which the rapid land release is part thereof, covers five key elements that will transform and grow the agriculture and the agro-processing sector in Ekurhuleni, as farmers will be assisted with access to Council-owned land, technical support, skills development, access to funding, access to markets and off-take agreements. This collaboration will support the City’s intention to position Ekurhuleni as the preferred investment destination for urban agriculture and agro-processing, and facilitate the participation of small, social and emerging farmers in the mainstream activities of the sector. Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina

ANC EKURHULENI CAUCUS CONCERNED ABOUT SLOW IRPTN INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

October is Transport Month. ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus’ Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi and the entire Exco Whippery members conducted a site inspection on IRPTN project in Tembisa on Friday, 4 October. When the new administration took over in 2016, it resolved to conduct strong political oversite on all the City’s flagship projects and IRPTN is one of them.

ANC caucus believes IRPTN infrastructural development is a game changer because it stands to benefit the residents of Ekurhuleni trough improved transport system. ANC caucus has noted some developments in other bus stations but raised concerns about the slow pace of development in the IRPTN infrastructural project. “We are noting that there’s some

movement in some stations, particularly Rabasotho Bus Station which is the main station and station No 19. We are encouraged that there is now some willingness to deal with the issue of infrastructure. “However, we are concerned about the fact that the infrastructure is not entirely completed and it is almost three years of this administration but the in-

frastructural development is showing slow progress. That is a worrying factor for us because without proper infrastructure it will be difficult to fully operationalize the project,” said ANC Ekurhuleni Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi. The IRPTN aims to transform public transport within Ekurhuleni, providing an affordable, yet high-quality public transport system in line with national policy. Its main objective is to provide a new and attractive transport network that includes road and rail public transport that serves the needs of the people of Ekurhuleni as a whole. Limited service of the Harambee BRT system started in October 2017. Because of a massive demand for this development, The City will introduce at-least new 22 buses to improve its operations later this month. ANC Caucus started the site inspection by riding the Harambee bus from Tembisa Hospital to Harambee Operation Centre in Kempton Park and observed how the operations are managed.

“We will put our report in writing and give it to the City’s Executive with our observations. Most importantly, we will make our input, as to what we think should be done in order to correct some of the observations. We have noted some good and weaknesses in the project. We are not entirely satisfied with the project because it affects the efficiency and professional manner in which the operations are taking place. However, we are encouraged by the improvement that we are seeing in addressing the infrastructure that has been outstanding for some time. We are encouraged by the fact that buses are on the road in particular the great demand to OR Tambo International Airport and coming back to the township,” Dlabathi added. ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus also conducted site visit to Germiston Lake and Germiston Stadium. Germiston Stadium was build 42 years ago. ANC Caucus believes that there should also be focussed maintenance and infrastructural development on both Germiston Lake and Germiston Stadium.

Home owner fuming after sewage manhole left open

Wold Teacher’s Day celebrated in Katlehong

Andronica Zondo almost burst with anger after she realized that the sewage manhole in her home was not closed. According to Zondo, on Monday people from City of Ekurhuleni came to do sewage drain maintenance, she was at work and she only realized late in the evening that the manhole was left opened. “I store my tools close to the drain, I had gone there last night to look for paraffin because we did not have electricity. My grandchild followed me that is when I noticed that they had negligently left the drain open,” she said.

Zondo’s main worry is that her 3 year old grandchild could easily trip and fall. “This clearly shows that they don’t care about our wellbeing and they are posing serious risks on our children,” said frustrated Zondo. Zondo alleges that her next neighbours, whom are an elderly couple, have been left with a blocked drain and sewage all over their yard “These people are inconsiderate, they left a mess in the residence of elderly people. Who is supposed to clean up all this mess that they left?”

SAPS recruitment scam on the rise SAPS revealed that criminals are scamming applicants who have applied to enrol in the recruitment drive for entry-level positions across the country. It is alleged that the criminals are pretending to be police officers making calls to homes of applicants who were looking to join the police. They would phone up, demand that R2 500 be transferred to an anonymous account, and target either the prospective employee or their parents. It’s understood that someone masquerading as a police captain would put the squeeze on their victims,

telling the families and applicants that they would need to pay the fee to go ahead with the training. A number of people have fallen for this scam already in Tabankulu and East London, in the Eastern Cape. The law enforcement body has stressed that applicants and parents “must refuse to be subjected to this kind of scam”, and they should report the matter immediately to the nearest police station. In their words, police employment “is not for sale” and people have a right to apply for work with SAPS free of charge.

Manyisa won’t play for the Enside season Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that midfielder Oupa Manyisa will be sidelined for the rest of the season with an achilles injury. Manyisa was stretchered off after 42 minutes of Sundowns’ 4-2 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup on Saturday and Mosimane shed some light on the extent of the injury. “I think his Achilles is gone, so I think the season is done for him, hey, unfortunately – it’s very sad,” said Mosimane in his post-match press conference. Meanwhile, Mosimane defended his decision to play a second-string side. “I would not say that I took a gamble, I never gamble in football. I play football proper, and we have been making changes a lot in the team,” he insisted. “From Thohoyandou (against Black Leopards) to today, obviously I made nine

changes, but I don’t want to complain about that because I did that when we played against Seychelles [Cote d’Oro]. “It’s part of the game and we can’t be complaining. We played Sundowns players that are normal, regular players, so it’s not a gamble; it’s okay, it’s part of football. “It’s also good for me, good for the players, good for everybody – good for you [the media], that we know what we have in the bag and we assess, so give guys a chance to play. “We can’t give them a chance on just any game, this is the right game, with the right intensity and everything. So, it’s okay, we learn from this game. “There’s lot of positive to take out of this game, and I think there can be a lot of positives also from Chiefs’ side. So, it’s just a learning game – it’s unbelievable what I’ve learnt today about my team.”

Rugby World Cup 2019 Rugby World Cup 2019 has been a memorable one and one team has been the darling of the tournament - Japan. The Japanese not only host this year’s event, but were one of the underdogs at the start of the tournament. The hosts have exceeded expectations thus far and the Springboks are now tasked with stopping them in their quarterfinal match on Sunday. Japan has become known for their fastpace, slick game, but this often isn’t the most effective game-plan when it comes

to play-off rugby. Although the match should pose a serious threat, it is one that the Boks will still be expecting to win. There are numerous factors in their favour, such as experience, squad depth and a pragmatic style of play. The Boks will also be buoyed by the return to fitness of Cheslin Kolbe and Herschel Jantjies.
