prayer for deadly road
On Wednesday, the committee of ward 53 in partnership with the ANC women’s league, EMPD, Encochoyini Primary School SGB the community and different churches held a peace walk from Phola Park community to the road where most fatal accidents happen throughout the year at Rivett-Carnetta Street. The busy road is problematic to the community as motorist are always rushing and do not give pedestrian from Thinasonke and Phola Park a chance to cross. Most of the victims to these roads’ accidents are learners trying to cross from
Eden Park and ThinaSonke to Encochoyini Primary School. The community gathered at the area and lit candles in honour of all the souls that have died in the road which they regard as the road of terror. Read out the memorandum to MMC Cllr Tiisetso Nketle Water, Sanitation and Energy and MMC Cllr Frans Moko social development and community safety. Amongst other things the community wants the roads to be expanded, they ask for more EMPD presence especially during rush hour and traffic lights. Cllr Nketle received and signed the mem-
orandum and promised the community that their demands will be passed on the relevant people who can assist. She also testified to knowing about the problems associated with the road of terror and how it has stolen so many lives. “If you don’t get services delivery you must come to me, I am deployed to serve you.” Cllr Moko commended the community for how they demonstrated their frustration without burning things or destroying infrastructure. He also promised to assist them with their demands. “We will look into your demands and we

promise to respond within 21 days, myself, Cllr Phelisa Nkunjana, Cllr Masele Madihlaba and Cllr Nketla we will sit down and find solutions to your problems,” he promised. Cllr Moko has also suggested that when everything has been finalised, a taxi stop should has be built to avoid taxis stopping everywhere. Mziyande Mketsu Councillor for ward 53 expressed his gratitude to the officials who came to hear their pleas and he hope that they will come up with solutions

Marathon cataract operations at Of Soul and Joy photo festival
Thelle Mogoerane Hospital help patients see again By Pamela Vilakazi
Eye care specialists at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital helped a total of 23 previously disadvantaged patients regain their eye sight during marathon cataract operations this past weekend. Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness in third world countries and in South Africa. Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging and are very common in older people. Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital’s eye clinic, which is led by Dr Asher Sharif, renders its services to people of all age groups, from premature infants to elderly people. The clinic sees roughly 60 to 70 out patients per day and performs approximately 100 eye operations per month. “There is a backlog of around 300 patients (mainly old people) at the hospital who need cataract operation. As part of ongoing efforts to remedy the situation, we have initiated the cataract marathons which will be conducted once a month on weekends,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Michael Malaka. People stay needlessly blind because of cataract, although it can be treated and cured by operation. The blindness caused by cataract puts strain on individuals, their family and the country in general. “The cataract marathon initiative will help decrease a huge backlog of surgeries and avoid preventable blindness. This month cataract marathon surgeries were conducted on Saturday 26th and Sunday
27th October 2019. We commend the Eye Department which currently consists of three doctors, one Optometrist and one Ophthalmology sister for the great job they are doing,” added Dr Malaka. The eye clinic continue to make meaningful contribution despite shortage of staff across the health sector. The unit has conducted health awareness campaign to prevent blindness because prevention is better than cure. The hospital is thankful to a partnership with Infinity Health and Islamic Foundation of South Africa who assisted in providing Ophthalmology Sterilizers for sterilizing eye instruments during surgeries. The hospital also wishes to thank the patients who have shared their experiences about regaining their eyesight.

Mabheka initially wanted too venture into modelling, he joined the project hop-
ing it will bring him closes to achieving his modelling dream. “I wanted to become a model, I decided to join photography and I feel in love with it,” Mabheka ultimate goal is to be a wellknown photographer and have his work exhibited worldwide. Project manager and mentor, Jabulani DhlaminI expressed his gratitude, highlighting how the objective of the festival has been achieved. “The aim of the project was to introduce to the community in order to education the community about using photography as the medium of expression and I can say that the community is now aware of photography,” he said. Dhlamini fell in love with photography at a tender age, he was known around the community as the camera person, capturing wedding celebrations and parties. “We want to equip our children on how to turn photography into a business and how to market themselves.” Anyone who is interested in the academy can go to Buhlebuzile on Saturday or contact SOUL and Joy project through Instagram and Facebook.

raise R160 000 for an operation
It was a packed Thursday, 24 October as the mall celebrate a milestone. The community came out in numbers to celebrate with them.
By Pamela Vilakazi
Ignatia Nekhumbe from Vosloorus teenage life changed in 1998 when she discovered that she was suffering from an abnormal condition called Submandular Glands. Nekhumbe was doing Grade 10 when she had a lump growing in her right chick. After her first surgery she thought things would go back to normal only to find out that the lump was now growing on her left side and she had to undergo her second operation, was the beginning of her endless trips the different doctors and referrals. Things became even more harder when the doctor who was helping her managed her illness died and she had to find another doctor. She was then referred to DR Nom Chong, who gave her hope, after doing all necessary tests, the Dr told her that she was too old, and she could not perform that operation on her and referred her to another Dr. What she thought was the light at the end of the tunnel turned, did not help
Lebo Matlala, marketing manager expressed her gratitude towards the continuous support the community of Kathorus has displayed towards the mall. As Chris Hani we re ecstatic and happy that we have made it into the 9 years of offering unique shopping experience to the community of Kathorus and we look forward to many more years,” she said. On the day the mall hosted a cake and candy bar which was the launch of the campaign and the celebration. “We had a positive turnout of over 500 people who came to our stand for the cake and sweet.” The mall offers its customers free Wi-Fi which they can use to browser for items online and they shoppers get instead prizes when they shop.
her cause as the Dr Van Wyk, compare the tests the Dr Nom Chong had done and conducted more tests. Dr Van Wyk also said that he was too old to perform such operations and referred her further. Being under her mom’s medical aid helped a lot as Nekhumbe could only worry about getting better, now things are hard as she has no medical aid and no funds for her next operation. The is a need for Nekhumbe to urgently undergo her operation as her lump keeps growing. “The current Dr that I am consulting with has discovered that my lump is now growing inside and out and also growing towards my skull, I have fainted 2 times and I cant be on my own in case I faint again,’ she said. According to Dr Marcos Torres-Holme the operation involves exposing the neck both sides and removing all the non-vital structures on both sides, preserving the important arteries, veins nerves and muscles. “It’s likely that we’ll have to cut through the jaw bones to get above all the tumour under the skull and the plate the jaw back,” said the Dr. The cost for the procedure is quite expensive, Nekhumbe will R160 000 for Surgery operations.
