Kathorus comes together in Albinism Awareness Walk LUBABALO RORO www.taxitimes.net
On Saturday, 22 June, the community of Kathorus came together to take part in an Albinism awareness walk. This was in connection with International Albinism day which is commemorated on the 13 June every year, with this year’s theme being “Still Standing Strong”. The campaign was hosted at Thokoza stadium’ Sam Ntuli sport complex. What is Albinism? Albinism is an inherited condition where a person is unable to produce normal colouring of the skin, hair and eyes (lack of pigment). The condition can be limited to the eye or involve the eye and the skin. “The aim of the walk was to raise awareness in the community and teach them about our condition. We are also looking forward in starting an Albinism forum here in Kathorus,” said Bontle Mavuka from Thokoza who is the brains behind the awareness walk campaign. The awareness walk started at Thokoza stadium then went to the township’s busiest road Khumalo Street to Mabuya Street before turning the corner at Moepshe and Mokoena Street to join Matsemela Street and head back to where it started. Various community organisations like CPF, Beauty By Nature, Helping Handz, Tass Foundation among many other attended the awareness walk. Further the City of Ekurhuleni Divisional Head for Women, Children and People with Disability directorate in the office of the executive mayor
Lindi Khonjelwayo delivered a few words of support and encouraged people living with albinism to unite and be organized and not let their skin condition get them down. “Today when we arrived here we saw all kinds of people not only people with albinism present. As community members we must talk amongst ourselves with issues affecting us and get to know each other because if we know each other we can fight the discrimination, killings of people living with albinism. Not so long ago here in Thokoza hostel we once found a leg of a child living with albinism which when it was tested found to be from Nairobi Kenya. People with albinism are not organized but I wish they can be organized and form an organized formation which will be a platform for them where they raise their issues also promote their interest,” said Khojelwayo. “Awareness must not be about only walking the streets but we must also be able to say how do we collaborate with families that do not have this condition in understanding who we are and how do we live. The City of Ekurhuleni acknowledges and recognises the right of people living with the condition called albinism,” concluded Khonjelwayo. The awareness walk was organised by The Voice, Egagasini and Way Forward. Shoprite provided the participants with a soup from their mobile soup kitchen.
Kick-starting careers in the insurance industry
Johannesburg – Legends In Training (LIT) is a qualification programme providing young, ambitious candidates with a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to turn their career dreams into reality. Through this unique initiative, participants from Orange Farm who are passionate about insurance will be selected for the programme, where they will learn valuable skills and gain essential knowledge in short-term insurance. While LIT provides an essential foundation in insurance, it also enables the participants to kick-start their careers in the industry. This initiative was launched through a collaboration between Constantia Insurance Company, LCJ Group and the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF), supported by Thetha FM and facilitated by the Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS). The potential of SA’s youth “We identified a need in the community and saw an opportunity to partner with organisations who also see the potential in South Africa’s youth,” says LCJ Group CEO Jimmy Makgato. “We are thrilled that we can provide the youth in Orange Farm with skills development and training opportunities, and we can’t wait to roll out the LIT qualification programme to communities across our country.” The 12-month programme is open to learners between the ages of 18 and 35, who are from
the Orange Farm area. Applications close at midnight on the 30th June 2019, whereafter participants will be selected. “At Constantia we care about the future of our country and the young minds that will lead us there. It’s particularly fitting, then, that the LIT programme is launching in Youth Month,” says Motseki Majake, general manager at Constantia Insurance Company. “We’re delighted to be part of an inspiring programme that helps us deliver on our promise of making insurance personal. Not only will this opportunity change the lives of the learners but it will also benefit their community and ultimately the country.” We want your CV Local radio station Thetha FM is playing a crucial role in delivering LIT’s message to the targeted Orange Farm community, with applicants able to drop off their CVs at the radio station before the June 30th deadline. “We’re excited to be involved in this programme as it directly impacts the youth in our community,” says Jimmy Dlamini, station manager at Thetha FM. “Opportunities like this don’t come around every day, which is why we’re encouraging the young members of Orange Farm to submit their CVs to us this month. We’re proud to have a hand in helping these learners turn their career dreams into reality.”

Rap star sponsors winter community tournament
27 JUNE 2019
Bafana Bafana kick-off 2019 AFCON with a loss Bafana Bafana came to the opening match with their spirits high after qualifying for this year’s tournament. Bafana’s opening match was against the mighty “Elephants” of Ivory Coast. Every South African who follows football knew that the team was faced with a mammoth task however most local soccer analyst kept reminding us that Bafana have never lost to Ivory Coast in an AFCON match. Ivory Coast boasts with a squad of players plying their trade in Europe’s most elite leagues from Barclays English Premier League, La Liga in Spain, Serie A and French Ligue 1. The match started at a slow pace with both teams not showing any urgency with commentators suggesting maybe the heat is to blame for such a slow paced game as thermometer was ticking at 37 degrees. However, it was Ivory Coast who upped the tempo and came close to scoring in the 31st minute when Pepe’s strike hit the cross bar. From there Ronwen Williams pulled off an outstanding save in a oneon-one situation to deny Ivory Coast the opener. Bafana created only one chance in the first half when Captain Thulani Hlatshwayo’s header from the corner kick went closely over the bar. The second half also started in same slow pace with both teams creating no real chances.
Ivory Coast managed to score from a breakaway in the 63rd minute through Jonathan Kadjia. After that Ivory Coast defended and relied on counter attacks which frustrated Bafana players until the end of the match. Bafana Coach Stuart Baxter, in the after match interviews, said his team played well even though they did not create many chances.
“We played very well. We matched the Ivorian team as you couldn’t tell the difference between the two teams if you did not see the score line. Such things happen in football that you don’t play as you wanted but we will fix this in our next match, which is must win due to today’s defeat,” said Baxter. Bafana’s next match is on Friday against the brave Warriors of Namibia
Youth games promote knowing your health status
Batho Pele and Business Forum games organized community games at Greenfield which kick-started on Saturday, 15 June at Greenfield grounds with 16 teams participating. “Batho Pele is a non-profit organisation based in Greenfields which does computer lessons for the youth aged 18-35 where they also attend life skills classes. The organisation also has an internet café, feeding scheme for disadvantaged community members in the surrounding areas,” said Sange Luwaca who was the organiser of the games from Batho Pele. The games concluded on Saturday, 22 June at Phola Park grounds due to community unrest in Greenfield after there was load
shedding. “The games are #Dlala4urStatus which is encouraging our youth to know their health status (T.B, HIV etc). It’s our 8th year running the games with teams coming from Greenfield and outside,” added Luwaca. The games included other sporting code like Netball which started on Monday, 17 June and ended the same day. The netball tournament was won by Highlanders which won the trophy for the third time beating Jaguars 16-11. The winners of the netball tournament walked away with R1900 and a brand new netball kit. The runners up received R900 and medals. The final for men soccer team was won
by Zonke Killers after beating Green Stars 2-0 and walked away with the first prize of R19 000, a trophy and new kit whilst the losing finalist received R3000 plus a new kit. “On behalf of Zonke Killers we would like to thank everyone who made this tournament possible. Coming to the match it was not an easy game for us but we managed to win the final because the boys stuck to the plan which was to keep the ball so that the opponents can come out of their box so that it can be easy to break them. Through that we managed to score two beautiful goals. All in all I would like to say well done to the boys for showing a character and hunger of a winning team. And lastly we would like to thank Batho Pele for such a wonderful tournament. Till we meet again next year let the beautiful football win,” said Zonke Killers coach Sphelele Sangweni .
For most townships in Gauteng, winter is the season for various community soccer tournaments to kick off. This year is no different as the Kathorus region, which comprises of Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus, has three tournaments that have already been launched and are underway. The oldest and biggest tournament of all these is the one taking place in Katlehong at Somhlolo ground. The tournament is more than 15 years old, with 32 teams participating in the seniors and 16 teams participating in the under 13, under 15 and under 17 competitions. This year the tournament is sponsored by Katlehong’s biggest hip-hop star Kwesta’s record label Raplyf. Winners of this year’s senior age group will walk away with a grand prize of R75 000 and runners up will receive R25 000. The tournament started on 8 June and the first 16 matches of the tournament have been played. The last Sunday of the month, 30 June, will see the start of knock out stages for the last remaining 16 teams. The tournament will end on Saturday, 13 July with the final set to be played at Huntersfield stadium.
