SA unemployment rate hits worst level since 2008
Statistics South Africa has released its Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the second quarter (Q2) of 2019 (April – June), and it paints a gloomy picture of the state of our flailing economy. The QLFS arrives at these estimates by collecting data on the labour market activities of individuals aged 15 years and older who live in South Africa. From the observed working-age population, Stats SA found that due to the increased number of unemployed persons in Q2, the unemployment rate has shot up by 1.4 percentage points to 29.0%. Surprisingly, Limpopo has maintained its edge over the Western Cape so far in 2019. In Q2, Limpopo showed a slight increase in unemployment, registering a 1.8-percentage point gain to total 20.3%. This is just 0.1 percentage points lower than the Western Cape’s unemployment rate, which comes in second at 20.4% Seven out of the nine provinces in South Africa saw increases in unemployment,
the largest being in the North West. Although the Eastern Cape has seen gains in reducing unemployment in Q1 (37.4%) compared to Q2 (35.4%), it is still regarded as the province with the highest unemployment rate. While the overall unemployment rate has shot up, there are instances where gains were made in struggling provinces that deserve recognition, like Eastern Cape and the Free State.

The majority of South African children do not know how to read or write in their mother tongue because of the influence of English and the choice to make English their first language. It doesn’t help that there is a perception in our communities that you have made it if you speak fluent English. As most schools encourage the use of English on the school grounds, it is advisable to encourage your child to speak in their mother tongue at home. This way, your child will become multilingual. Parents, guardians and society also play a role and have influence on how language is dominant in a child’s life. Your child connects to you, the relatives, their culture, history, identity and religion through their mother tongue. Speaking their mother tongue links your child to their culture and shapes their identity. Children who are unaware of their culture, language and history might lose their self-confidence. Find ways to help your child maintain and improve their mother tongue and also teach them to respect other cultures.
Changing lives one pair of shoes at a time The Molotsi Foundation launched a project aimed at collecting and donating 200 pairs of school shoes to learners in need. One pair of school shoes can change a child’s life for the better. CIT HEIST: HAWKS Woman’s decomposed SECURE VIDEO FOOTAGE body found in shallow grave
The Hawks are hoping that video recordings by people who witnessed a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Rustenburg on Saturday, 20 July will assist them to apprehend the villains behind the crime. Taxi Times understands that the suspects staged an accident at the corner of Fatima Bhayat and Bosch Street by driving a white Mahindra vehicle into the armoured truck. “They also blocked the car that was escorting the armoured truck. They then bombed the armoured vehicle,” the eyewitness said. “They used a grey Toyota Hilux bakkie and a Ford Ranger bakkie to escape with the money. However, they did not manage to take all the cash,” the eyewitness added. Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso, the provincial spokesperson of the Hawks, said crucial evidence is still being gathered while an investigation is being carried out. “Unfortunately, there is no identikit yet, but there are videos that were recorded by witnesses and people are encouraged to come forward with any information that could be helpful,” she said. In recent months, armoured security vehicles in Rustenburg and surrounding areas have been targeted by criminal syndicates.

A badly decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman was found in a shallow grave in Matlhoding, North West police said. Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said a 35-year-old woman was last seen on Saturday, 6 July with her 41-yearold boyfriend. Her family reported her missing on Monday, 21 July. It was alleged that the man killed her and buried her in a shallow grave at the farm where they work. A person with knowledge of the events stated that the police intervened when the community of Matlhoding, about 115km outside Mahikeng, became suspicious of the man and started questioning him. “Information led the police to the farm, where he allegedly buried the victim. The badly decomposed body was discovered, exhumed from the shallow grave and taken to the local mortuary,” she said.

Duduetsang Mokotedi is excited to be one of the contestants in the Ms Africa Continental 2020 modelling pageant. “This is my first modelling competition and I am very excited because I am representing Rustenburg and the North West province,” the 23-year old from Phokeng told Platinum Weekly. From an initial list of about 1,000 contestants, only 11 will compete for the crown in Buffelspoort on Saturday, 2 November. “The judges asked us a number of questions during the initial stages and I managed to remain in contention. There are two others from the North West province who are also competing in our category, so we are well represented,” Duduetsang explained. Duduetsang, who attended Lebone II College of the Royal Bafokeng before matriculating at Kele Combined School in 2014, is asking the community to rally behind her so that she receives the highest number of votes. Taxi driver arrested for unlicensed firearms
John Kgaogelo Motllhamme, a taxi operator, appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as the negligent handling of a firearm. The case was postponed to Monday, 22 July for the formal bail application. He remains in custody. The arrest came after police acted on a community tip-off, and an intelligencedriven operation was conducted on 15 July at 22:00 at a house in Sunrise Park, Boitekong. According to police spokesperson captain Aafje Botma, upon arrival at the house, the suspect was found in possession
of an unlicensed rifle, magazine and ammunition. A second pistol with ammunition was found under the suspect’s pillow, but he produced a valid license for the pistol. A white Iveco Sprinter, parked outside the house, was searched which led to the discovery of yet another unlicensed pistol and a magazine under the seat of the vehicle. The North West provincial commissioner, lieutenant general Baile Motswenyane said that the police will continue with their commitment of reducing the levels of serious crimes to ensure a safer tomorrow.

Route fued in Rustenburg leaves taxi owner’s minibus torched
Taxi owner Leticia Mabaso is still reeling from shock after her minibus taxi was burnt and two others damaged in an alleged route feud in Rustenburg. Mabaso said she received a call from her uncle stating that their vehicles have been pelted with stones while in line to pick up passengers at the rank in Seraleng near Rustenburg. Her uncle identified Boitekong and Meriting Taxi Association (Bamta) members as those who were involved in the attack. The association allegedly wanted to push Mamojozi Taxi Association out of the Seraleng route. “My uncle drives one of the Quantum taxis we have. He called around 11am and said Bamta taxi drivers have just thrown stones at the taxis. There were three of them and the third one was burnt. We managed to get the two but could not get the third burnt vehicle,” she said.

“One of the taxi drivers was allegedly removed from one taxi and beaten by the attackers,” she said, adding that there was “no exchange of words and it all happened quickly”. She said they do not know why they were targeted. “This is a second hit on our taxis. The first incident happened earlier this year,” she said. The windows of the two mini bus taxis were smashed out. Bamta spokesman Lesiba Kekana said he could not comment on an issue he had no details about. North West police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said she was not aware of the case but, knew of two taxi operators who had opened a case of assault at the Boitekong police station. She said two minibus taxi drivers were beaten up allegedly by other taxi drivers in Seraleng near Rustenburg on Thursday last week.
Zodwa Wabantu has reportedly cancelled her wedding to her much younger boyfriend, Ntobeko Linda. Last week, Zodwa announced that she
was “taking a break” from her man as they both needed space. “We have taken a break from the relationship. I had anxiety over this relationship, so we decided to take a break,” she said. The Vosho queen and reality TV star did not confirm whether or not the wedding was called off. But according to a recent report by Sunday Sun, the wedding was supposed to take place on Saturday but this did not happen. A source close to Zodwa said that the entertainer is really upset over her breakup with Ntobeko. “Zodwa is a strong woman but she loves Ntobeko, hence she finds it hard to deal with his absence.” Zodwa has not yet commented on the matter.

Pitso Mosimane may Zinniaville soccer team wins big walk out on Mamelodi Sundowns
Zinniaville Secondary School were crowned champions of the u/19 Football Platinum Series after defeating Hoërskool Grenswag by 1-0 in a lively match. The game, which was played at the Grenville High School soccer grounds on Saturday, 20 July was a closely contested encounter with both teams showing a clear determination to win. Thabang Rokgorro’s goal in the first half Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is allegedly considering leaving Sundowns due to deepening tensions in his relationship with the club management. According to Sunday World, claims are rife that trouble has been brewing at Chloorkop over the past few years due to issues that Mosimane feels should have been dealt with differently by the club. According to three officials who did not wish to be named, Mosimane is sick and tired because most of his and his technical team’s complaints or concerns were not entertained or resolved. Among a litany of allegations said to have divided the club was the potential decision by the multiple league champions and 2016 CAF Champions League winners to bring in a Spanish coach and technical director. Mosimane was apparently unimpressed with the move as he saw it as being “policed” by a European. The official claimed that the technical director had already visited the club’s headquarters in Midrand about two weeks ago and the club was impressed with his presentation. “It means that Pitso would no longer have a direct line to the president. He is now going to report directly to this man. This is an utmost disrespect.” Another official, opposed to Mosimane’s camp, confirmed that the technical director was in town and left last weekend. He declined to disclose the name of the coach.”Pitso thinks he is God and needs to be monitored. This is a good move. If he is not happy, he can leave. He is the
one who leaked the story because he wants to get the Bafana Bafana job using the club.” Another bump in the relationship between the coach and the club was the allegation that club official Alex Shakoane led a campaign to employ former supporters’ club office bearer Cedric Moela at the club, despite the public humiliation and embarrassment he subjected Mosimane to when he led the “Pitso must go” campaign, which resulted in some fans turning against the coach. It is also understood that when Mosimane expressed his disappointment with the club management about Moela’s hiring, club president Patrice Motsepe advised Mosimane to forgive him. Moela refuted the allegations saying:” The coach and I relate very well. He calls me and I call him too.” Another allegation was that club Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Amanda Matthee was frustrating Mosimane’s plans, leading to the technical team writing a letter of complaint about her. As a result of some of the tensions at the club, Mosimane has not signed a new contract, with the current one ending at the end of the year. Mosimane, the official said, was so frustrated that he did not travel to Botswana with the team where they played pre-season friendlies. He was also alleged to have failed to travel with the team to Zambia, only following them a day later. Speaking through club spokesperson Thulani Thuswa, Mosimane confirmed that he didn’t travel with the team to Botswana and Zambia but said it was because of health reasons.

Meet the “Big Fish”
The 25-year-old hooker from Newrak Impala Rugby Maliviwe Simanga grew up watching his father and other family members play rugby and fell in love with the sport. “I was very playful when I was young and grew up with older guys who used to bully me a lot, they used to say that they are making me tough and today it really shows in my games,” said Maliviwe in an interview with Platinum Weekly. ‘Big Fish’ as he is better known, believes in experiencing new things and living life to the fullest. He spends a lot of the time in the gym and he is also
busy with his electrical engineering learnership at Impala Platinum Mine. When asked how he balances work, rugby and a social life he answered: “Rugby is basically my life because this is where I make friendships that will last a lifetime. Sometimes it gets a bit difficult but on the days that we are off, I take some time for myself.” By taking time for himself he means spending time with his five-monthold daughter, Ziincebazakhe. “I used to really love going out with friends and family just enjoying life, but since I became a father, I really love spending time with my daughter.”
