Dad who murdered six-month-old baby with pickaxe jailed for life The Polokwane High Court sentenced Lesiba Albert Motsayi to life in prison for killing his six month-old baby girl with a pickaxe in Mookgopong last year. Limpopo police spokesman Constable Maphure Manamela said the horrific incident emanated from a jealous rage after Motsayi arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s home and asked to her to go to his house so that he could spend some time with their baby alone.
Later on, when the mother wanted to return to her home, he accused her of cheating on him. “She hastily turned and went to ask her younger sister to go fetch the baby for her but the accused went inside the room where the infant was sleeping and assaulted her with a pickaxe. The baby was taken to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries,” said Manamela. The 27-year-old father was arrested on the same day.
Several Dead In Xenophobic Attacks
South Africa’s foreign minister has called an urgent meeting with ambassadors following attacks against foreigners in Durban. A week ago, three people died amid protests targeting shops, many of which are foreign-owned. Around 50 people sought shelter at a police station when a group of unemployed South Africans forced them out of their homes in the night. Foreigners are targeted by people who accuse them of taking jobs from locals. About 100 people attacked small food shops on Sunday night and into Monday morning, looting and burning the buildings. One woman died when she fell through a roof while she was running away from protesters. Another two people died from gunshot wounds, allegedly inflicted by a shopkeeper. Last Tuesday foreigners started seeking shelter in a mosque and a police station.
The minister of international relations and co-operation, Lindiwe Sisulu, urged the police to act against people targeting foreigners. “All criminal activities and looting of properties of foreign nationals will not be tolerated‚ and the police and other law-enforcement agencies must act without fear or favour,” she said in a statement. She had organised a meeting with African diplomats on Monday. Some people complain about foreigners
working in South Africa where unemployment is painfully high - standing at more than 27% at the end of last year. Xenophobia against migrants from other African countries is not new in South Africa. In 2015 unrest in the cities of Johannesburg and Durban claimed seven lives as immigrants were hunted down and attacked by gangs. South Africa experienced its worst outbreak of violence against foreigners in 2008, when more than 60 people died. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says he’s ashamed of being a South African because of the recent spate of attacks against foreign nationals in the country. Incidents have been reported in provinces of Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal recently. Malema was addressing a packed Philippi stadium as part of the party’s election campaign drive. He said South Africa is a country for all and called for an end to xenophobic violence. “Whether you are from South Africa, whether you are from Zimbabwe, whether you are from Nigeria - this is your home.” He also dismissed claims that foreigners were taking South Africans’ jobs. “There are no jobs in South Africa because whites are refusing to invest money in South Africa, they’ve got too many savings in the bank.” International Relations Minister Lindiwe Sisulu called on law enforcement officers to act swiftly and deal with criminals following the recent spate of violence against foreign nationals.

TIPS FOR PASSENGERS Try not to go to a taxi rank with a bag, or if you do, don’t keep your bag/backpack on your back. Keep it in front of you or near your chest and hold firmly. Don’t be nervous (or at least try not to look nervous), always walk firmly and look like you know where you’re going (even if you’re lost). Put on your serious face, but be cautious. Don’t be a fool and flaunt your belongings, and don’t walk in isolated areas, especially in the taxi ranks, stay close to other passengers in the more public spaces. Usually it’s best to go with a friend for the first time to a new destination, so they can help you get the right taxi. Ladies of any age group in queues are also generally more helpful, more willing to speak to you to advise on correct routes compared to the men. Initially when I started writing this article, I didn’t realise that AftaRobot existed. It’s a good method to help us, but I still haven’t tested it, as it’s only available for Android right now. I don’t know if is missing the necessary hand signals you need to make, or if the app will eliminate the need for hand signals all together. Once I test it out fully, I’ll share my learnings with you.
TAXI FARE INCREASE ON THE CARDS
Taxi organisation, SANTACO says a taxi fare increase may be on the cards in light of the steep fuel hike that will take effect on Wednesday. This is in response to an announcement by the Energy Department that the petrol price will rise by R1.34, diesel by R0. 82 and illuminating paraffin by R0.63 a litre. The Department cited a number of factors as causes for the hike, including a weak Rand against the dollar and higher oil crude prices in the international market. SANTACO’s president, Philip Taibos says the national executive will meet tomorrow to chart a way forward. “It’s putting us in such a very precarious position. We service the poorest of the poor. We service people who go every day and look for work. We are forced to be looking at the prices. We are going to look into these petrol prices, but I don’t see a way in which the taxi industry will not increase. The increase is imminent because we must keep these vehicles on the road and keep on servicing people.”
Woman leaves infant for dead in pit toilet
A 41-year-old woman was arrested in connection with an attempted murder of her newborn baby, North West police said on Wednesday. Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said a newborn baby boy was found in a pit toilet in Jericho outside Brits on Sunday. “According to information at our disposal, a neighbour allegedly heard a baby crying from a pit toilet and called members of the community to assist. “The police and emergency services were contacted and
the baby was taken out alive from the pit toilet. He was taken to Brits Hospital, where he was treated.” Funani said following an intensive search and investigation by the police, the baby’s mother was arrested, at a clinic in Jericho. “She was taken to hospital where she was admitted under police guard. The suspect appeared in absentia in the Brits Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder. She will re-appear before the same court after being discharged from the hospital.”
