The rights of women and children are fundamental human rights protected by our national Constitution. Gender-based and child violence, in all its different forms, devalues human dignity and the self-worth of the abused person and must be stopped in our society. The campaign can only succeed if we stand together to safeguard our society against this cycle of abuse.

A NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR #MENARETRASH

While scrolling through my Facebook feed recently, I couldn’t help but notice desperate attempts by men to detract from the #AmINext and #MenAreTrash movements. Each time a woman shares an article about the movement, or just voices their fear and uncertainty, there is a male lurking in the comments section, trying to make it about them. I am not discounting the fact that men have been through their fair share of trauma. If you don’t think you’re trash, that’s great. But tooting your own horn just so you don’t have to feel some sense of responsibility for the hashtag is counterproductive to what women are

trying to achieve. In short, if men don’t have anything productive to say that will add momentum to and solidarity with the new-found voice that women (finally) feel they have, they should be quiet. Which is why snide comments made by men who insist they are not trash is such a misguided reaction. Rapists are trash. Racists are trash. Bad people who do bad things are trash. Good people who see bad people do bad things and do nothing are trash. Stop focusing on the hashtag and look at the bigger picture

President Ramaphosa calls on Cops to intensify manhunt for killer of Precious Ramabulana By Omie

He has directed Police Minister Bheki Cele to avail all the necessary resources to support local police in the search for the killer. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to intensify the manhunt for the killer of 21-year-old Limpopo student Precious Ramabulana and to ensure the perpetrator is apprehended and brought to book swiftly. Ramabulana was stabbed to death over the weekend, Limpopo police confirmed on Monday. Fellow students and friends of Ramabulana took to social media in grief and anger after hearing she had apparently been stabbed 52 times in the room where she was staying. “The savagery inflicted on this young

woman … points to a level of depravity that is beyond the comprehensible,” Ramaphosa said in a statement on Wednesday. “We are horrified at yet another killing of an innocent woman, and we are angry, this simply cannot go on,” Ramaphosa said. Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the 21-year-old was attacked by an unknown person and “brutally stabbed to death” at around 2.30am on Sunday. “It is alleged that the deceased was asleep in her rented room at ga-Joel Section in Mokomene when the suspect gained entry through the window and started attacking her. He then stabbed her several times and fled the scene,” he said. “The deceased’s frantic screams were heard by the neighbour who called the police. On arrival, her body was found in a pool of blood with several stab wounds. The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage.” Mojapelo could not confirm reports that she had also been raped. Ramaphosa has directed Police Minister Bheki Cele to avail of all the necessary resources to support local police in the search for the killer. “Whoever committed this brutal act must know that there is no corner for you to hide. You will be found, you will be tried, and you will receive the highest penalty,” Ramaphosa said.

On Sunday, thousands of South Africans gathered at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg to pray for the country. Issues like gender-based violence and crimes against children took centre stage on the National Day of Prayer. Amongst those who attended were Julius Malema and Mmusi Maimane. The EFF leader made a u-turn in his feelings towards Maimane after the latter stepped down as the DA leader.

Juju and the former DA leader posed for a photo together and the EFF posted it on Twitter. The EFF captioned the photo: “CIC @Julius_S_Malema takes a pic with @MmusiMaimane at #nationaldayofprayer. Leadership of South Africa is all here to join in prayer for our country and the world. Our prayer request is the end of antiblack racism in the country and the world.” The gathering was held to unite

people in their concern for the country, including poverty, gender-based violence and disunity. The first event was held in 2017. It has seen more than 90,000 people gather at the stadium every year. It was reported that security guards had to open the gates to avoid a stampede. The stadium was full, with many people left outside, upset that they could not join the event’s activities.

Caster Semenya: Birthplace of Dreams

The new release, titled ‘The birthplace of dreams’ is narrated by Caster herself and tracks her journey from her humble beginnings in Limpopo to professional athlete, Olympic champion and running coach. Her story starts in the small village outside Polokwane, South Africa. She recalls that at the time she spent her time playing football before she re-

alised her dream of being an 800m athlete. “I played under 14. Most people came to see me play, how I played because they know I’m a girl. I was fast, I played a fast game,” she said. She attributes the support from her family for her journey to Olympic stardom saying: “Positivity comes from where you’re coming from. How you’re raised, the love that you

get from your family and their belief in you. If people believe in you, you’ll always be positive, you’ll be a believer.” Along with her wife Violet and her close friend Koketso Mogapi she started the Masai Athletics Club in Pretoria and Soweto. The club aims to discover young athletes and develop them into the running stars of the future.
