Fox Security became a victim of crime in Alberton recently. They received a phone-call from a client, informing the control room of a man who said he was being threatened and was in need of medical and police assistance at St Columb Street New Redruth. Fox Security control room dispatched their Armed Response Unit, as well as two Tactical

Letter to the Editor

Something Positive - Service from Ekurhuleni Municipality In an era where we seem to spend our days complaining about bad service delivery on behalf of our municipality, I thought a pleasant change would be in order... My issue is not a once-off fluke. I have an ongoing issue with a blocked sewerage system. The cause is the root system of a tree in my neighbour’s yard. As a result I have to call on the municipality at least every two or three months to come and clear solid waste that would normally flow through the system if not for the roots.

As I noticed the level of the toilet rising after flushing one morning, I immediately called the 0860 543 000 number. (Approx. 9:15am). I was immediately sent an SMS with my reference number, and by 10:45am, my problem was solved. Thank you Isaac, Sipho and Shadow for speedy service and friendly smiles - despite the horrendous challenge you face with every callout. Yours Faithfully Lindsay Fraser

In ‘n minibus taxi kyk mens ook heeltyd in d i e pad voor jou, want jy weet nie of jy noodwendig in een stuk by jou

Before

After

Last week we had a taste of life before internet, and let me tell you, it wasn’t a pretty sight. There was some inexplicable problem with the internet connection at the office, and it went like this: Wednesday: Everyone is ready for the day, logged on, receiving emails. Suddenly, the sound of ‘’nooooo’’ could be heard all the way to the R59 offramp. Stage one – denial and isolation. We all truly believed that the internet would come back on within a few minutes. When it didn’t happen, we isolated ourselves by listening to music until around 16:00, which was when the production department went into the early stages of step two. Thursday: When we arrived at the office and there was still no internet, things escalated quickly to stage two – anger. When reality emerged, the struggle became real people. Without internet, we can’t send the newspaper to the printers, and we have many deadlines to meet on a weekly basis. Stage three also stepped in – bargaining. In our case, our office manager spent hours on the phone with Telkom to try to sort out the problem. We used mobile devices to try to get as much as possible done. The production office quickly moved on to stage four – depression. The silence was deafening; the looks on everyone’s faces will haunt my dreams for years to come. Friday: We were informed that the problem could last for a few more days. By this time, we have reached stage five – acceptance. We came prepared with iPads, airtime and a plan of action. Still not completely over stage four, the day commenced. Bargaining, with the occasional outburst of anger, wasn’t off the table yet. Just after 13:00 it happened – we were back online! The colour returned to the faces of the production department and the sweet sound of incoming emails brightened up the office again. How we survived pre-internet, I can’t recall. All I can say is that you can email your stories to monica.supra@tametimes.co.za...

PRIMROSE SAPS SUCCESSFUL ARRESTS POSSESSION OF DRUGS INCIDENT 1: The arrest was effected by a Metro police member who was patrolling the area when he was stopped by a member of the public, who informed him about illegal drug-related activity. The police went to the address supplied and searched a man. In his possession, they found a Ziploc bag containing a white narcotic substance. INCIDENT 2: Police officers (not in uniform) were observing the corner of Rietfontein and Thistle Road (same address as incident 1) when they received information about two men taking drugs. They approached the men and asked to search them. They found a Ziploc bag containing a white substance on the one suspect and dagga in the other suspect’s pockets. COMMUNITY HANDS OVER ROBBER TO POLICE A 30-year-old man was arrested for common robbery on 23 June after a woman alleged that when she stopped at a stop sign, the man opened the passenger door of her vehicle and pointed at her with a sharp object. He ordered her to drive west and stop at the corner of Ixia and Tilia Streets. He then demanded her cellphone and money. The suspect took R700 from the victim’s jacket and ran away. The victim screamed, causing the community to chase the suspect. He was caught

and handed over to the police, who arrested him. Primrose SAPS thanks the community for helping the victim and not taking the law into their own hands. POSSESSION OF SUSPECTED STOLEN VEHICLE Metro police arrested four suspects aged between 28 and 35 at Churchill Road on 22 June. After receiving information about a suspiciouslooking silver Mercedes C-class at Cydonia Bridge, the police went to the bridge and when the suspects spotted them, they jumped into the vehicle and drove off. Police followed and ordered them to stop when they reached Churchill Road. The driver approached the Metro police and the three remaining suspects fled in different directions. The two crew members in the police vehicle chased after the running suspects and managed to arrest two. The third suspect was arrested by a security officer who saw him hiding at Mountain View. The police searched the suspects and found a toy gun in one suspect’s possession. After being questioned, the suspects confessed that they were at the bridge to do a smash-and-grab. The vehicle was checked and the police determined that the licence disk had expired long before. Upon profiling the vehicle, they found that it could be linked to 30 different cases in the Germiston Cluster area alone.

The suspects were arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. HOUSE-BREAKING AND THEFT Three suspects aged between 25 and 33 were arrested on 21 June on Chestnut Street in Primrose East. A member of the neighbourhood watch alleged that he observed a maroon Mercedes-Benz driving around dropping off a lady wearing an orange dress. She rang the bell of his neighbour’s house and when he did not answer the door, she went back to the vehicle which drove off. After a few minutes, the same vehicle returned and dropped off three men, who walked to the same house, broke the gate and entered the house. The observer called for backup on the patrol radio and one patroller responded. They approached the suspects inside the house. Upon realizing they were being approached, the suspects sprayed pepper spray and a fight broke out. One patroller had a private firearm and fired two shots at the advancing suspects. One suspect was hit in the left leg above the knee. The police were called and the suspects were searched. Police found jewellery taken from the main bedroom. The injured suspect was taken to Tembisa Hospital under police guard. The two remaining suspects appeared before the Germiston Court. The injured suspect will appear in court when his condition has improved.

SAFETY TIPS FOR

THE HOLIDAY PERIOD

Din-Al-View CPF would like to share some safety tips for the children who are going to be on school holidays. Crime will not stop because of the holidays. •

You need to be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times and not be distracted.

Keep your cellphone and personal belongings out of sight – in a bag or a pocket that closes.

Advise an adult of your destination and companions before you go out; also inform them of your planned activities.

Use the ‘’buddy system’’ whenever possible. Always take a friend with you when you go places or play outside.

When at home, do not answer your front door to any stranger. If you are alone, phone one of your parents or a trusted adult and inform them of what is happening.

Report anything suspicious on the CPF WhatsApp group or CPF radio.

Do not give any personal information, such as your name, address, phone number etc. to a stranger, even if they appear to know you.

If you are at a mall or public place and someone enters your personal space, tell them loudly to move away.

If someone tries to hurt you, scream, kick, fight and even bite. Make as much noise as possible to attract the attention of the people around you.

If you have to go out on your own, it is safer to stay around other people.

Do not accept lifts from strangers. Only get into someone’s car if you know the person very well.

If you are walking and a car stops alongside you, move away in the opposite direction.

Parents, have your contact numbers - as well as other emergency numbers - written on a large piece of paper and put up next to the phone in the house, or somewhere in the house where you know your child will find it.

Inform and equip your domestic workers for emergencies. Keep safe and enjoy the holidays.

Maw Dawid was ‘n man van vele talente.

For just one day

Community

Chante Stroh 011 862 8500 Friday 19 June was a big day for motorists in Gauteng - a day of protests against the e-toll system implemented on Gauteng freeways, a day all about creating awareness for the “For Just One Day” campaign. The “For Just One Day” group includes three of the larger groups and pages on Facebook, namely “Cars Against e-Tolls,” “Bikers Against e-Tolls” and “Proudly e-Tag Free,” which are fighting against e-tolls. Although these three groups are still separate organizations, they have combined their efforts to take a united stand against corruption as a whole and their mission is to tackle the e-toll system first. “There are at least 100 groups and pages on Facebook that are standing up against e-tolls,” says Dianne Smith the PR person for “Cars Against e-Tolls.” “We have made the decision to stand with some of the larger groups and make a bigger impact. If we all stand united against an issue like e-tolls we stand a great chance of actually winning this war on corruption in our country,” she explained. “‘For Just One Day’ incorporates all forms of peaceful protests against all forms of government corruption and abuse,” Smith said. “We don’t want to cause anybody any harm, especially not the citizens of South Africa. We would just like to let the government know that we will not stand for injustice and corruption.”

“People have become so accustomed to the idea of just accepting what the government throws at us. People are afraid of standing up against their government ... but we at ‘For Just One Day’ would like to change people’s mindset regarding acceptance. The message that we would like to convey to people is that you have a voice and you are allowed to stand up for what you believe in; you can challenge the government,” said Smith. The next protest will take place on 19 August as the groups will march to the Union Buildings as a unit. What will you do? Even if it is for just one day.

PROTESTERS: standing up against e-tolls

Elkeen is seker geregtig op sy ‘’15 minutes of fame’’. Al skaam ek my dood, is Gysie ook geregtig daarop.

YOUR WORLD THIS WEEK MAJOR ASTHMA BREAKTHROUGH

A team of scientists led by Cardiff University claim to have found the root cause of asthma, a breakthrough which could pave the way for a new treatment within five years. The team have found a protein within the airways which they believe triggers all asthma attacks. Furthermore, it’s been found that a drug already exists which they think could

deactivate the protein. The team has already shown that the drug works in mice and in human tissue samples in the laboratory. They have now designed the first clinical trials, which could start within two years. “Our findings are incredibly exciting,” said lead investigator Professor Daniela Riccardi. (www.dailymail.co.uk)

CLARKSON CRACKS PISTORIUS JOKE DURING JHB SHOW

Charlize and Sean split

South African actress and Oscar winner Charlize Theron has reportedly parted ways with American actor and director Sean Penn, whom she has been dating since 2013. People magazine is reporting that the couple was last seen looking stunning on the Cannes red carpet in May. But in recent weeks, the couple have not been spotted together and according to sources, they stayed under separate roofs. Theron and her three-year-old son Jackson remained at their Hollywood home and Penn, at his Malibu mansion. People reports they backed out of at least one scheduled event together before Theron headed to London to film The Huntsman. Reps for the stars have not commented on the split. The Benoni-born actress won an Academy award in 2004 for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. (www.people.com)

‘Hunky’ gorilla causes stir

Move over King Kong, there’s a new ape on the scene who’s stealing hearts. Shabani, an 18-year-old 180kg silverback, is the latest star attraction at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya, Japan. Japanese women are flocking to the zoo to spot Shabani, who likes to strike poses and

show off his physique. “He often rests his chin on his hands and looks intently at you,” said zoo spokesperson Takayuki Ishikawa. “He is more buff than most gorillas and he’s at his peak physically. We’ve seen a rise in the number of female visitors – women say he’s very good-looking.” (www.news24.com)

Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson was caught on camera making jokes about the killing of model Reeva Steenkamp by paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius during the Clarkson, Hammond & May Live show in Johannesburg. Clarkson pretended to shoot an audience member accidentally with a paintball gun, saying he “thought he was a burglar”. Former Top Gear presenter James May then asked: “Was that member of the audience you shot in the bathroom?” (www.theguardian.com)

Potter play set for 2016 Fans of the Harry Potter franchise are in luck – author of the seven Potter novels and three companion books, JK Rowling, recently announced her Harry Potter stage play will open in London’s West End in 2016. Called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it will tell the “untold part” of the boy wizard’s story, including the story of the lives of his murdered

parents. Rowling chose to make the announcement on Friday 26 June as it marked the 18th anniversary of the first publication of her debut book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in the UK. According to Rowling, the play is not a prequel. (www.bbc.com)

Lexus creates advanced Hoverboard Design and technology collaboration achieves creative breakthrough for new Lexus Amazing in Motion project

A Lexus has always been a vehicle that rides on wheels, in contact with the ground. Until now… this summer a new Lexus takes flight, bringing the stuff of science fiction closer to real world fact. Lexus has worked with experts in superconductive technology to create one of the most advanced Hoverboards the world has seen. The concept is the fourth project in its Amazing in Motion campaign, demonstrating its commitment to pursuing new possibilities in advanced design and technology.

Mark Templin, Executive Vice President, Lexus International, said: “At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible. That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It’s the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination.” The Lexus project team has used magnetic levitation with liquid nitrogen-cooled

superconductors and permanent magnets to give the Hoverboard frictionless movement of a kind that had been thought impossible. Although a completely different form of transport, the Hoverboard shares design cues with today’s Lexus cars, including the signature spindle grille. It has also been made using some of the same materials, both high-tech and natural, such as bamboo. The Hoverboard is part of the fourth project in the Lexus Amazing in Motion campaign,

an international showcase for the brand’s creativity and innovation. The prototype is being tested in Barcelona in the coming weeks prior to the campaign’s launch this summer. WATCH THIS SPACE! Check out the Lexus Hoverboard teaser video on Toyota GB’s Vimeo channel: https://vimeo.com/user9210540 **Note: The Lexus Hoverboard is a prototype and will not be for sale. The project can be followed on Twitter using the official hashtags #LexusHover and #AmazinginMotion.

KIA Motors partners with SEVEN7 Drive to raise funds for Little Fighters Cancer Trust

On 2 July 2015, three intrepid adventurers will depart from the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Capital Park, Pretoria, on an epic journey through seven southern African countries – in just seven days. The trip, known as the SEVEN7 Drive, endeavours to raise funds for children with cancer, and specifically for children with cancer who are terminal and are not covered by medical aid. Taking on the epic challenge is a trio not entirely unfamiliar with African overland adventures. Heading up the team is well known offroad and adventure journalist, Danie Botha, along with

Leisure Wheels photojournalist and experienced traveller G.G. van Rooyen and logistics expert Jan van Deventer, who counts top international film and television companies as his clients. Playing a vital role in the backup and fundraising team is Margaret Pretorius, a highly experienced events professional formerly of African Outdoor Group, who is currently fighting cancer herself - as determined as they come. “Driving 6500km in seven days is not a major challenge if you drive on new highways. But we will be tackling lesser known tracks, and on each leg there will be rough gravel roads and twee-spoor tracks to cover,” says Botha. “We have assembled a formidable team, but in Africa you never know what you’re going to find around the next

corner.” The team will travel from Pretoria to Windhoek, Namibia, on day one before heading to Nata in Botswana on day two. Lake Kyle in Zimbabwe follows on day three, with Maxixe in Mozambique on day four. From Inhambane the trio will head to Manzini in Swaziland on day five and Mokhotlong in Lesotho on day six before finishing back at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital on day seven. The team will make a pit-stop in each of the aforementioned towns at a pre-selected hospital or clinic to deliver a message of love and a surprise package to a young, terminally ill patient. In total, they will cover approximately 6 500 km in the space of a week, spreading a message of love and hope throughout the journey while raising funds for Little Fighters Cancer Trust. Notably, because all operational costs for the trip are sponsored in full, all moneys raised go directly to the charity. With the aid of satellite communication the team will update supporters as often as possible on a daily basis through the dedicated SEVEN7 Drive Facebook page and Twitter account, as well as through blog posts on the Little Fighters webpage. The entire trip will also be filmed for a short internet video that will be published on social

media. Interested parties will also be able to view the route at the end of each day via the Facebook page, courtesy of satellite service provider Zippisat. “This is a unique opportunity to bring hope and a smile to little people that are fighting the scourge of cancer, which we know has affected countless famiies and children,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director, KIA South Africa. “We are excited and privileged to be able to provide a new Sorento that we know will more than stand up to the challenge Africa has in store for the team, and we wish them well on their journey. It’s a small gesture from us, but we hope everyone following the group will donate and make a difference in their own right.” To make the donation process as easy as possible, the organisers have set up multiple platforms in which to do so. The easiest way by far is to simply SMS “SEVEN” to 40770 to donate a once-off R20 to the Little Fighters Cancer Trust.

MADIBA presents the William Webb Ellis Cup to Springbok captain Francois Pienaar on June 24, 1995. Twenty years after the day of the famous 15-12 victory over the All Blacks, the World Cup winning Springbok team gathered at Emirates Airline Park (formerly known as Ellis Park) for an emotional reunion. On 24 June, the day that marked the anniversary of an iconic day in South

African history, the former Springboks posed for a photo with a banner stating ‘’still one team, still one country’’ on the field where they took the World Cup in front of 60 000 fans, thanks to the memorable drop goal from flyhalf Joel Stransky. Captain Francois Pienaar led the remaining members of the team through the tunnel and

on to the field, pushing former scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen, still struggling with motor neuron disease, in a wheelchair with the rest of the squad in tow. At the screening of the match, Pienaar noted that it was the first time that he would watch the game. He said that Nelson Mandela, the first President of

the democratic Republic of South Africa, played a pivotal part in helping the team and that they missed his Madiba magic last week. The former captain also paid tribute to coach Kitch Christie, Ruben Kruger, and all the other people involved in the 1995 set-up, who had since passed away.
