Despite the winter now officially being here, there are lots of exciting things happening in and around the neighbourhood (See pages 2, 4 and 5): and let’s face it, we as South Africans are tougher than most and aren’t about to push away our skottels and braais because it’s just gotten a whole lot colder. Something I’m really excited about is Tree63 performing in the area this June (See page 3). They were one of the first gospel bands I listened to as a born-again Christian and their getting back together last year and returning to the stage, after seven years of silence, is another testimony of how when God is in something, no one can stop it. If you put a book down before you get to the end, the story might not make sense. Maybe there are things about your life that don’t make sense, but He’s not done writing. As one of the band members of Tree 63 said, “The future? Who can tell? Tree 63 is God’s idea, He will write the end of the story.” The winter might be getting you down, but spring is on its way.

Theft of copper an ongoing problem
Copper cable theft continues to be a problem in Elandsfontein and its surrounding areas. One man was recently arrested for being in possession of copper cables valued at R1 500 in Barbara Road, Bedfordview. Bedfordview spokesman Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi said an email tip-off had notified policing authorities that someone was busy moving copper cables in the area. When a policing official had arrived at the scene, five suspicious men had seen him and started to flee the scene. The official had gone to inspect the corner area where the men had been gathered and found another man hiding there. He was subsequently arrested. In a separate incident, a security official at the railway station in Elandsfontein had been informed that some men were busy burning copper in the area. On investigating, he had found five men with copper to the value of R2 600. They were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property. The tame TIMES recently reported on an incident in Olifant Street, Elandsfontein in which four men were arrested for being in possession of stolen copper. As in the first incident, an anonymous tip-off from somebody in the community had notified authorities of the crime.

First place was won by Rynaard Beylefeld. Warren Rheinhard was awarded second place and Francois Deysel, third place. Music entertained visitors and stall-holders added to the carnival atmosphere.

There has been an increase in hijacking incidents in the Edenvale area over the past month, with women being targeted. This, according to Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, Edenvale police’s Crime Prevention Officer, who said women were perceived as soft targets by perpetrators. “We have noticed that most of the cases over the past months involve women,” he said. “While hijackers remain a constant threat, there are periods when this crime increases and all residents, not just women, need to be aware of their safety at all times.” He said motorists should not linger in their driveways when leaving their properties or arriving home and should always check to see they were not being followed on returning home from visiting friends or shopping. Should this happen, he has advised motorists to drive to a nearby safe place or police station until the threat has passed.

Celebrating Horwood’s Farm Edenvale residents have teamed together as Friends of Horwood’s Farm, to keep the farm in its former pristine glory. Sharon Lendrum-Frittelli told the tame TIMES that during the past few years, Friends of Horwood Farm volunteers had painted the amphitheatre, gazebo, ablution facilities and palisade fencing of the farm, and conducted regular cleanup operations on the premises. They had also been instrumental in building five additional braai areas, repairing the children’s play equipment, composting garden beds, pruning rose bushes, and clearing the river edges of bugweed. “But the vast majority of our time is spent keeping the park area clean and

The Horwood’s Farm Craft Market takes place on the 1st Sunday of each month from 9am to 3pm at Horwood’s Farm, Homestead Road, Hurlyvale, Edenvale. There is a variety of food stalls, a well maintained children’s play area and plenty of safe parking available. Stores include second-hand or craft/antique goods. There is a DJ playing music across the generations and each month various types of entertainment (such as dancers or fashion shows), are arranged, as well as something for the children (such as face painting and jumping castles).
trimmed on an ongoing rotation basis,” she said. A monthly Crafters Market, which was launched on Mandela Day 2014, is now also held on the grounds. “The number of stall-holders, as well as visitors coming to the market, continues to grow. With the ever increasing high density housing taking place in the surrounding areas, fewer people have private gardens and I believe there is a great need for outdoor entertainment in green spaces.” Lendrum-Frittelli has asked the community to come forward to assist the group in their efforts to keep the heritage of Horwood’s Farm alive. For more information, contact shaze@iafrica.com.
Edenvale’s early history dates back to 1859, when the Zuid Afrikaansche Republic granted Mr AJ Nel the farm Rietfontein 341. In the process of buying and selling portions of the farm that took place over the following years, a portion of the farm was purchased by Tobias Johannes Mynhardt on March 1, 1883. In 1897 he sold a portion to Phillip Amm, who in turn sold it to John de Lacey in 1898. It is not known in what year the house was built or by whom, but it is thought to have been built in the late 1890s by Mr Phillip Amm. In 1919 the farm was purchased by David William Horwood senior and the house was reportedly "already looking old" by the time the Horwood family moved into the house. Bertha Mary Horwood, the widow of one of his sons, Brian Turner Horwood, sold the ground to the Edenvale Town Council in April 1956. During the 1980s the farmhouse was occupied by the then Department of Bantu Affairs, as well as the East Rand Development Board. In the early 1990s a very successful restaurant was run at the homestead, and many of the residents can attest to happy family celebrations enjoyed at the homestead during this period, as there was a very successful crafter's market. Sadly, due to lack of ongoing essential maintenance of the area, there was a steady decline in the state of the public park - resulting in the restaurant closing and the market disintegrating. This farmhouse is the oldest building in Edenvale and is officially recognised as a national monument by the Heritage Foundation.

tame TIMES Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart, also chairperson of the Edenvale Child Welfare, has appealed to the community to support the organisation. The DA alleges that government is underfunding the Child Welfare offices on the East Rand by as much as 77%. “Government has an obligation under the Constitution and the Children’s Act to ensure that all children are taken care of, and such funding falls in line with their duty to

We also have to make many copies of reports we have to provide, all at our own cost.” She continued: “We currently only have one vehicle for two social workers and while we desperately need another, the insurance and running costs would be too onerous unless we could find sponsors. This means we have to share vehicles on a regular basis.” “The irony of us as an organisation, mandated to do the work of the

For these new responsibilities we have not been given extra funding, despite it costing a fortune in petrol to get to and from the courts and to make visits to parents or children, often outside

ON TOP OF HER GAME: Katherine Deacon, a Grade 0 pupil at St Andrew’s School for Girls, participated in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Regional Competition where she qualified for Central Gauteng Junior Colours. Deacon received a bronze medal for the u/6 level 1 Rhythmic Gymnastics Rope and finished fourth in the u/6 age group overall.
SUPER ACHIEVER: Para-athlete Dylan Ronald Da Silva is an athlete to be reckoned with. The annual Ekurhuleni 2015 Sport Awards ceremony held on 27 May was an evening of glitz and glamour. Honouring the top sport achievers in the region, the City of Ekurhuleni awarded our country’s excellent sporting talent and showed their appreciation to some phenomenal sports stars. Para-athlete Dylan Ronald Da Silva was among the three nominees selected for the Sportsman of the Year (People with Disability) award. Da Silva represented South Africa at the International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Championships held in Canada last year and was awarded his Protea colours for triathlon. He won the National Triathlon Championships and was crowned national cycling champion at the 2014 South African Cycling Championships in both the road race and time trail events. Da Silva has been involved in sports for nine years and has competed in numerous competitions over the years including the Discovery World Triathlon Series hosted in Cape Town where he battled it out against non para-athletes. “My best achievement thus far was when I came 10th at World Championships,” he said. Having competed around the world including Italy and Rio de Janeiro, Da Silva trains full time. “When I’m not training I help my dad out with his business,” he said. Apart from cycling, swimming and running, Da Silva enjoys cars. “Unfortunately, sport is so expensive that you can’t really afford to have a hobby,” he laughed. Da Silva has been selected for the 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup which is set to take place Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. When asked about his ultimate goal, Da Silva said that he wants to make it big in the sporting world. “I’m hoping to go to the Paralympics. This all depends on if my category is selected,” he adds.
