Accident at “Robot of Death”
By Bianca Maré and Justus Abrams On Monday 8 June at about 18:40pm a serious accident occurred at the Rondebult and Middle Road intersection. According to an EMPD officer on the scene a speeding bakkie driving westbound on Rondebult Road overtook other vehicles at the intersection and collided headon into a taxi turning into Middle Street. According to William Ntladi, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EMS), EMS responded to a call when a member of the public walked into the fire station on Leeuwpoort Street and informed them about the accident. When EMS arrived at the scene of the accident they found a collision between a bakkie and a minibus taxi filled with passengers. Ntladi said that a total of 16 people were injured during the accident – 15 people from the taxi and the one passenger from the bakkie. Four were in a critical condition and 12 were in a serious but stable condition. Ambulances on the scene, both private operators and those from government health services, transported some patients to Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg and others to Sunshine Hospital in Actonville, Benoni. This intersection at Rondebult and Middle Road has, over the years, been notorious for serious motor vehicle accidents. One Reiger Park resident the tame TIMES spoke to called this intersection “the robot of death,” in reference to the numerous fatal accidents that have occurred at this
intersection over the years. It was at this very same intersection that a family of four was killed when a Nissan Navara crashed into their Opel Corsa on 21 November 2014. A concerned resident who uses this intersection - one of the Reiger Park exits - emailed the newspaper article to the office of the Ekurhuleni Mayor, hoping for action to be taken to improve the safety of commuters at this intersection. According to the resident, he was later (27 November 2014) copied into the following email that also served as a response to his concern:
MANGLED MESS: all that remains of a minibus taxi involved in a headon collision with a bakkie at the entrance to Reiger Park
Good morning Colleagues, As per the attached document, the Executive Mayor kindly requests that you facilitate the implementation of speed calming measures. Kind regards, Zinzile Nxesi (Mr) Manager: Special Programmes Office of the Executive Mayor Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
To date, however, the situation at the intersection remains unchanged. The tame TIMES could not reach a spokesperson from EMPD to comment on action taken to ensure the safety of commuters at this intersection, as our calls went directly to voicemail.

Lions’ Captain visits Elspark High Justus Abrams
justus.abrams@tametimes.co.za
ROARING: Tom Negry from Pro-Sport, Frans Phuti & Maria Ban from Future Life, Warren Whiteley, school principal Van Niekerk and deputy principal Lukas Groenewald
LION SELFIES: Warren posed for photos with Elspark learners.
Learners and staff at Elspark High School could not contain their excitement on Wednesday 10 June, when they received a visit from Warren Whiteley, Captain of the Lions Rugby team. Warren visited the school with Maria Ban and Frans Phuti from Future Life products and Tom Negry from Pro-Sport, to promote Future Life products. Warren said that Future Life products were originally developed to feed the disadvantaged, struggling and starving masses in certain regions of Africa, and had therefore had to ensure great nutritional value to feed the hungry. But Warren also used the opportunity to motivate the learners by sharing a few of his insecurities and struggles while growing up. Warren said that he was very small for a rugby player, and he struggled to gain weight – he would gain a few kilos but lose them even faster. This, he said, left him often very despondent and unsure of whether he would achieve his goal to be a great rugby player. He said his father motivated him and told him not to listen to his detractors and to reach for his goals. Although this motivated him, he still struggled with
his body’s inability to build itself up to a reasonable weight for rugby. He tried many products and would even eat “oats” at two in the morning and throughout the day. With all the challenges and doubts, he remained stubbornly true to his goals and dreams and today he is the captain of one of the most successful clubs, which has won most of their Super 15 matches thus far for the season. Warren encouraged the youngsters to believe in their dreams and not to give up on them, regardless of the challenges they face – but he also told them to respect their fellow man and woman. Future Life donated a box for porridge for each learner and asked them to cut out the questionnaires and indicate on them their their favourite flavour. For every answered questionnaire dropped in the suggestion box, Future Life will donate R1 to the school. After the speeches and other official “visit stuff,” Warren posed for some photos with several of the school’s sports teams, signed some T-shirts and also posed for “selfies” with some of the learners.

Support Carnival City Sleep Out for vulnerable children Carnival City executives and employees will spend the night under the stars on Thursday, 18 June 2015. Giving up the home comforts that so many people take for granted, the volunteers will brave the cold night to raise awareness and funds to support the critical work of Girls and Boys Town. Members of the community can show their support by making a donation towards the cause at the main entrance to Carnival City on the night. A registration table will be available from 18h00. Carnival City’s Sleep Out is aligned with the inaugural 702 Sun International CEO Sleep Out to be hosted in Johannesburg on 18 June 2015. Carnival City’s General Manager, Annemie Turk, alongside other employees will sleep out at Carnival City on the same night in a show of support of this worthy initiative and in solidarity with Sun International’s CEO, Graeme Stephens. The CEO Sleep Out, founded in Australia in 2006, challenges local business leaders to join the global movement to raise funds, awareness and empathy for homelessness and the challenges faced by vulnerable children every day. Almost 200 of the country’s top business leaders have already registered to participate in the 702 Sun International CEO Sleep Out. The immediate mission of the Johannesburg
CEO Sleep Out event is for 250 participants to raise R100 000 each, raising a total of R25 million overnight for Girls and Boys Town, and to spark a conversation about the role of business as a force for good in society. “If South Africa’s top business echelon can spend a cold winter’s night under the stars, so should we. We are urging caring South Africans to pledge their support for our sleep out as all donations will go towards helping the inaugural 702 Sun International CEO Sleep Out reach its fundraising target,” says Annemie Turk, the General Manager of Carnival City. For more information about making a donation to the Carnival City Sleep Out, contact Mdu Madonsela (CSI Officer) on 011 898 7191.

FORMING FITNESS HABITS By Yunata Andrews
Now that you know that you need to start exercising, get fit, be healthy and stay in shape, it’s time to form an exercise habit. We are all faced with the problem of forming exercise habits and sticking to them. A fitness habit is a valuable thing to have and it will help you stick to the realistic fitness goals that you have set for yourself. So where do you start? Eliminate “can’t, “I don’t have time,” “it’s too cold,” and “I’m not in the mood,” etc ... Rather figure out what time suits you best to train and start making an effort. Goudrand Primêr is baie trots op hul netbal en rugby spanne wat pragtig gespeel het in die liga. Die netbal eerste span het derde in die liga geëindig. In die rugby is die 0/10, tweede en eerste spanne deur na semi-finale en o/11’s deur na uitspeel rondtes. Die skool het algeheel derde in die liga geëindig. Welgedaan Goudrand Primêr!
Danone Junior Finals at W J Clements Stadium Boksburg and Central Football Association (BCFA) will put Reiger Park on the map again for all the right reasons when they host the Danone national finals on 27 June for the under-12 schools teams at Reiger Park’s WJ Clements Stadium. In 2013 and 2014 the competition was also hosted at this venue and Danone had no hesitation in taking it back to Reiger Park. The winning team of this tournament will represent South
Africa in the world finals in Morocco later in the year. Danone will have gifts and prizes for the spectators at the event. Schools are encouraged to send their learners, as there will be plenty of activities for the whole family. The Association will also host the Super League play-offs for the Ekurhuleni region on 20 June. F C Porto from Reiger Park will compete in these play-offs for a chance to be promoted to the SAB Regional League Elite Division. Entry to the stadium is free for the play-offs and F C Porto invites their supporters to come and cheer them on in their bid to reach the Elite Division – as it is hosted on their home ground. The clubs sharing the host venue as home ground with F C Porto that are already playing in the Elite Division are Sun United FC and Juventus FC.
If your goal is to run every morning, go to bed with your running shoes next to your bed. If you need more motivation, sleep with them on. Don’t hit the snooze button - get up, put on your training gear (which you should get ready the previous night) and off you go for your run. If your goal is to exercise every day after work, pack your gym bag the night before and take it with you in the morning. (It is always advisable to have a gym bag in your car). Stop with all the excuses and start holding yourself accountable for your health and wellbeing. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Every day presents an opportunity to get better. It is up to you to take the chance and make things happen. Happy Training!
