Vehicle accident claims one life
CRASHED: The blue Mitsubishi Subaru that crashed into the precast wall. At around 17:55 on 3 June, the driver of a blue Mitsubishi Subaru crashed into the precast wall of the Leon Ferreira Fire Station 16 on Jeremy Klark Street, Boksburg. According to William Ntladi, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services Division, a male driver, probably in his early forties, died on the scene after he drove through the wall at the fire station. Ntladi said that the cause of the accident is not known. Ntladi said that they suspect the driver was speeding, but added, “what is strange is
that there [are] two speed humps before the place of impact.” This should have slowed the driver down, but – since the car crashed through the fence – it seems that it did not. However, according to Emer-G-Med medical services, who were the paramedics on the scene, the lone male occupant could have “suffered a medical episode.” No further detail on the specific ‘medical condition’ could be obtained. No one else was injured in the accident. The matter was handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.
Thank you
I studied the Basic Draughting course (MDDOP) at the African Academy in 2007. During this time, I promised myself and the African Academy that I would be one of the best students that African Academy would place in the working world of draughting. At the end of the year, African Academy arranged interviews for students. I went to Hitachi in Woodmead for my first interview, but was not successful. My second interview was with ELB Engineering in Sandton. This was successful and I commenced employment with ELB on 14 January 2008. My first duties were printing, scanning and folding drawings for the Drawing Office. This continued for many months. At a later stage, the Drawing Office Manager was satisfied with the work I was doing and started giving me drawings to back up for draughtspersons on various projects. In 2009, the office was positive that I would make a great employee and for the first time they let me work on a project. I was sent to site with a senior draughtsperson to learn what was expected from a draughtsperson on site. In 2010 my big break came when I was one of the eight draughtspersons that was chosen to work on the Eskom Medupi project. At the end of 2013, to my delight, I was awarded the Exceptional Service award for 2013. It was the first time I saw all my hard work and effort coming to fruition. There is always something new to learn in draughting. I am still young but one day I want to pass on the knowledge I learned from my elders in the drawing office to new and upcoming draughtspersons. In conclusion I would like to say thank you to the African Academy for the trust and patience they had in me. They supported me all the way. I will always keep African Academy’s name high and proud, to show every draughtsperson in the workplace and the country that the African Academy only provides the best draughtspersons in South Africa. Yours truly
Hermanus

Ek self is
My gunsteling vakansieplek is by die see, verkieslik die Kaapse suidkus.” Ons verwelkom Mnr van Niekerk en glo onder sy leierskap sal die skool groei van sukses tot sukses.

Dear Editor,
THE DA
RESPONDS
I was surprised to read the letter “DA opposes housing development” (12 May 2015). As the ward councillor for Reiger Park and a member of the Human Settlements Oversight Committee, I have been pushing for this development since I became a councillor in 2011 and the project has been on the cards for at least eight years. The letter-writer’s allegations are devoid of substance and I invite him to provide more information on these supposed “serious objections” so that I can adequately respond. The Democratic Alliance wholeheartedly supports the provision for social housing and its only requirement for new developments is that the developers and Metro stick to the laws governing building and zoning. The allegation that my colleague Johan Hendricks believes “Reiger Park represents filth, crime and disorder” is slanderous and completely untrue. The example Mr Woodington uses to support his argument, and supposedly link this belief to the DA and myself, is the photograph of me on the front page of the Boksburg Advertiser bringing attention to illegal dumping in Reiger Park. I will continue to bring to the community’s attention to the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality’s (EMM) complete lack of service delivery. It is an utter disgrace that the EMM does not take residents of Reiger Park seriously and provide adequate services, including the removal of illegally dumped rubbish. If the DA were running this Metro it would ensure that every community had access to proper basic services and would punish illegal dumping harshly to avoid communities being forced to live with this kind of filth..

Ekurhuleni health facilities adopt hi-tech systems “THE ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS SYSTEM WILL MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE WAITING TIMES AND MANAGEMENT OF MEDICATION AT PRIMARY HEALTHCARE FACILITIES” In stepping up the pace towards becoming a digital city and promoting the effective use of technology to improve healthcare, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is phasing in the E’Health Records system in primary health facilities across the Metro. The Electronic Health Records system will make an impact on the waiting times and management of medication at primary healthcare facilities and the first phase, which is in the process of being implemented, is the Patient Registration Module. To date a total of 51 732 patients have been registered on the system at 40 primary healthcare facilities across the Metro. The
GROW your BUSINESS by ADVERTISING in this NEWSPAPER
Patient Registration Module allows for patients to be registered electronically at reception when they visit clinics. The system will also assist the municipality to establish how many clients are registered at a specific clinic and use that data for the purpose of improving planning of health services and the allocation of resources. It will also help with the administration of medication and eliminate the current challenge of duplication of treatment - where patients receive medication from more than one clinic. The records system will in future be linked with the SMS notification system that has already been piloted in nine health facilities. Chronic patients will be sent a short message text reminding them of their next consultation date. An additional electronic module that will be applied in response to the national strategy to modernise healthcare is Mom Connect.
Mom Connect is a cellphone system linked to a National Electronic Information Centre that was implemented through the National Department of Health in September 2014. It is essentially an SMS service which provides expectant mothers with information and advice on pregnancy, as well as a channel to notify government about poor service. Training is ongoing to ensure that all clerical personnel are proficient to use the E’Health Records system. While the municipality is in the processes of phasing in the system residents are urged to adhere to their appointment dates to prevent overcrowding at clinics.

live the African dream Living the African dream is not just about buying a house and a car and raising well educated children. Our role models take personal success to the next level by creating jobs, leaving legacies in their communities and acting as role models for the next generation. While China is suffering from pollution, our continent has huge blue skies and unspoilt wildernesses of every kind. While Europe is overcrowded, we have space to spare. While Americans are obsessed with materialism, 1 Africans celebrate people and love hospitality. Africa is not just a continent with heart and soul – but also massive economic potential. Nigeria, which not so recently was synonymous merely with corruption, 1 419 scams and drug-dealers, now has the 24th largest economy in the 4 world. Between 1990 and 2010, the size of the country’s economy almost doubled. Its real GDP growth in 2012 was 6,7%. In 2013 it was 7,4%; in 2014, 7,2% and in 2015, 7,1%. Imagine how many economies this African giant could overtake if it continues to grow at this rate. [africaneconomioutlook.org] Mozambique, which has recently discovered lucrative reserves of natural gas, managed to move successfully from a war-torn country with its infrastructure in ruins in 1992, to a nation with a growth 2 rate of 7 to 8% a year. [bbc.com] Ethiopia, in the space of a generation, managed to turn desert into farmland by means of an innovative terracing system that maximises every drop of rain that falls in that dry area. [goodnewsnetwork.org] 3 Politically, the African continent has challenges, but we also brought the world Madiba and the Rainbow Nation – as well as the 4 Liberian miracle and the Rwandan 5 success story. After 14 years of brutal and bloody civil war, Liberia’s first woman president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf brought peace to that troubled country and hope to women, with tough rape laws coming into force only a day after her inauguration. [http://news.bbc.co.uk] In Rwanda, which suffered a ghastly genocide in 1994, nearly 98% of citizens now have health insurance; maternal mortality rates are 60% less than they were in 2000 and it is now 70% less likely that a Rwandan child will die by the age of five years. [nytimes.com] The success stories continue. They just need an African press agency to tell the world about them.

Sentencing in Curburne van Wyk’s murder case
JUSTICE: Members of Curburne van Wyk’s family in the front rows, with the guilty Nathaniel Mpoku’s family in the back row, in Palm Ridge Court during sentencing. The left side of the front two rows were filled with members of the van Wyk family; to the right the media sat – and just before the court proceedings were about to start four members of the man who was found guilty of kidnapping and killing the threeyear-old Curburne, Nathaniel Mpoku, entered the court and occupied the last row of benches. 5 June was the day that everyone turned up at Palm Ridge Court for the sentencing of

Nathaniel Mpoku. After finding Mpoku guilty on 21 May, Judge George Maluleke urged him (Mpoku) to testify at his sentencing in mitigation. He said that should a testimony in mitigation come from the accused it might carry more weight than if his council spoke on his behalf. It is more personal, said the judge. Judge Maluleke reiterated his sentiment for the accused to make a personal testimony at his sentencing, but added that if the court

could, through his testimony, establish why Mpoku committed the crimes, it would be in a better position to understand the crime. He, however, emphasised that it remained the prerogative and right of Mpoku if he wished to testify. The council for Mpoku said that he did not wish to testify and gave instruction to his council to speak on his behalf. The defence also added that Mpoku still maintains his innocence and therefore cannot oblige the court in giving any clarity as to why the kidnapping and murder were committed. The defence, however, further added that “Mpoku does accept conviction of the court.” As part of the prosecution presenting their aggravating circumstances before sentencing, they called the mother of Curburne, Lezell van Wyk, to testify. Lezell broke down crying numerous times during her testimony. To start off the questioning, Lezell was asked by the prosecution about the day when Curburne went missing, how she found out and what she did. During her testimony, the defence lawyer for Mpoku objected, saying that if this was the line of questioning, why did the mother not testify during the trial when she could be cross- examined? The judge clarified
SCAM
A new scam has surfaced in the area, which has already affected Brakpan residents. People arrive at a home posing as ant-removers. They offer their services for R70 a year, and then immediately start to treat the resident’s garden with a certain fertilizer. When they are finished, they present the home-owner with a bill for an amount of R 7 400. They demand the cash immediately and become aggressive. Please be aware of these criminals. Rather make use of registered specialists, and verify the existence of the company before hiring anyone.
the situation and gave Mpoku’s council an opportunity to question the mother. Lezell primarily testified as to how she reacted when she found out Curburne was missing, when Curburne’s body was found and how she felt when she realised her son was dead. After breaking down numerous times, crying, she was also asked why she was still so emotional, almost ten months after the murder. A short adjournment was called, giving the mother a chance to recover and think about the question, but also to consider what sentence she would want imposed on Mpoku. After the adjournment the mother responded, saying that she might recover once Mpoku told her why “he did it,” referring to why he kidnapped and killed her son. On cross-examination, Mpoku’s council pointed out to Lezell that Mpoku still maintains that he is innocent so he could not answer her question. Due to an expert, Mr Labuschagne, not being available to testify and present his proposals and observations on the case to the court, the matter was postponed to 31 July, when the expert will testify, whereafter sentencing will be given.

Solar Impulse 2 in round-the-world attempt
Man dies after arm is ripped off An East Rand man, thought to be in his 30s, died after his arm was ripped off in an accident at work on 5 May, paramedics said. ‘’It is understood that the man was working on a machine, at a business premises in Elandsfontein in Germiston, when his arm was caught in the machine,’’ ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said. Paramedics found him lying next to the machine with severe injuries and his arm amputated. He was treated and rushed to the closest hospital, where he then died.
POWERED BY THE SUN: In this Sunday, May 31, 2015 file photo, Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg waves from the aircraft Solar Impulse 2 before taking off at Nanjing Lukou International Airport in eastern China. (Chinatopix via The Associated Press) Plans to fly a solar plane around the world without a drop of fuel were foiled when the pilot had to make an unscheduled stop on Monday night, 1 June in Nagoya, Japan, because of bad weather. Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg took off from Nanjing, China, on Sunday on what was to be the longest leg of the journey, a five-day, 8,175-kilometre (5,079-mile) flight to Hawaii. Instead, the Solar Impulse 2 will land in Nagoya in central Japan, organisers said. Japanese Transport Ministry and Nagoya airport officials confirmed that they are making arrangements for an unanticipated landing at Nagoya Airport. Elke Neumann, a spokeswoman for the Solar
Impulse project, said from Nanjing that the team first noticed the bad weather pattern about 36 hours ago. “We thought we might go through it,” she said. “But between Japan and Hawaii there’s no place to stop.” The safety of the pilot and the plane are a priority, so the team decided to wait out the weather in Japan, she said. The plane will land after scheduled flights at the airport end around 10 pm. Solar Impulse 2 needs room to land, so it generally avoids times when commercial flights are operating, Neuman said. The plane also usually lands at night,
because the winds tend to be lower. It needs wind to be no more than 10 knots, she said. “We are a little bit sad, because everything’s functioning perfectly: The batteries are charging, there’s enough sun, the pilot is in good health, he’s in good condition — it’s all working well,” Neumann said. The journey started in March in Abu Dhabi, and the plane has stopped in Oman, India, Myanmar and China. The flight from Nanjing to Hawaii is the seventh of 12 flights and the riskiest. (www.cbc.ca)

FIFA bribery scandal continues The Hawks are looking into allegations that the South African Football Association (Safa) was involved in the Fifa bribery scandal, but denied a formal probe had been started. “The speculations that have been doing the rounds claiming that Hawks are investigating Safa President Dr Danny Jordaan and other Safa officials are simply malicious, baseless and unfounded,” a statement said. However, the Hawks confirmed that they had received documents from the FF Plus “concerning the Fifa issues” and that a informal inquiry had been opened to “investigate the contents of the documents.”
“We are looking into the matter. This will form a preliminary investigation and it will determine whether this will be a full-blown formal investigation,” Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi told eNCA. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula on Wednesday denied that the $10m payment made by South Africa to the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) was a bribe to secure the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The “above-the-board” payment to an “approved project” was “not a bribe,” he said at a press conference. The minister said South Africa does not oppose the current investigation by the United
States into alleged bribery, but called on the US to come forward with proof to back such allegations. The US authorities are investigating the transfer of $10m, paid by Fifa on behalf of 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa, which had been unable to pay the sum directly from government funds. Ailing former Fifa official Chuck Blazer has admitted that he and others accepted bribes before the votes that gave the 1998 World Cup to France and the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, according to newly unsealed US court documents. PIC OF THE WEEK Business as usual after fatal lion attack Despite the fatal lion attack on 29-year-old Katherine Chappel last week, business is running as usual at the Lion Park north of Johannesburg, and visitors are driving through with all their windows rolled up. Chappel, a visual-effects editor who worked on Game of Thrones, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Divergent, died on 1 June when a lioness attacked her through her open window. The park rules clearly forbid visitors from rolling their windows down. According to www.vulture.com, Chappell’s driver, Pierre Potgieter, was also injured trying to pull her away from the lion, and also says he suffered a heart attack during the incident. Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager at the Lion Park, said that the park was investigating the attack. The lion will not be euthanized, but will be moved to another property owned by the park, away from tourists, Simpson said. Signs tell visitors to keep their windows up, but sometimes there are visitors who don’t play it safe. ‘’They think it’s Disneyland and that you can go play with the animal,’’ Simpson concluded. This Little Miss Magic and her friends crept their way into thousands of little children’s hearts over the years by means of radio shows, books and even records in the earlier years and later via CDs, and the television series.

Frans Swart, a former camera man on the Liewe Heksie show has, recreated and directed the new fun and captivating Liewe Heksie theatre production that is currently being showcased. We had a chance to see the show - it was very entertaining and the characters kept the little ones engaged throughout the show by interacting with them. The modern twist of song, dance and sarcasm of the vibrantly modern characters - Blommie, Karel die Kat Koning Rosekrans, Kwaaitjie die Kabouter en die Koei and Botterblom really added some spunk to the production, keeping even the adults entertained, while bringing back childhood memories.
REMEMBERING POENA: Sherese Visser and brothers Dimitri and Jayson The Benoni Rugby Club u/21 team played a game against Sasolburg on Saturday in honour of Dewalt (Poena) Visser who tragically lost his life when the father of his girlfriend allegedly shot both him and his father Dewalt Snr at his girlfriend’s home in Benoni in 2013. up his number 4 jersey. All the jerseys had Poena’s name and number on the sleeves and the game was attended by his mother, Sherese Visser and brothers Dimitri and Jayson. There was not a dry eye to be seen when the Benoni team walked solemnly on to the field and played with such passion and emotion that they went on to win the game against the league leaders by a staggering 77-5.

The crowd was treated to a night of outstanding fights from start to finish. The main event featured former welterweight champion Dino “The Lion” Bagattin and the young sensation Dricus “Stillknocks” du Plessis. The contest began at a high pace and maintained that level throughout. From the start, Bagattin and du Plessis exchanged massive punches and kicks in a frenetic first round. Midway through the second, du Plessis shot for the take-down. After a back-and-forth scramble, the youngster took advantage of an error from Bagattin and showed his proficiency by taking his opponent’s back and sinking a tight rear naked choke, forcing him to tap. A jubilant du Plessis expressed his delight at his performance and thanked the crowd in attendance, saying, “If you guys enjoyed my fight, then I enjoyed it.” A veteran of the organisation, Bagattin promised the crowd he would be back as always, ready to give the fans another show. The penultimate bout of the evening saw former UFC heavyweight and EFC champion Ruan “Fangzz” Potts make his anticipated return to the Hexagon to face Frenchman Cyril “Silverback” Asker. Potts took the fight to Asker, going straight for the take-down from the get go. Taking advantage of his position, Potts laid down heavy ground and pound, opening up a laceration on Asker’s eye. Surviving the initial onslaught, Asker reversed positions and rained down with heavy ground and pound of his own. A visibly battered Potts failed to answer the second round bell, resulting in a verbal submission victory for Asker. EFC president Cairo Howarth confirmed in the post-event press conference that the Frenchman will be facing Andrew van Zyl for the heavyweight title in October. Wrestling sensation Igeu “Smiley” Kabesa extended his undefeated winning streak to six fights with a dominant display over Irishman Peter “Showstopper” Queally. Kabesa, who looked to be on his back foot for the entire fight, used his position to counter and score massive take-downs, thereby completely nullifying Queally’s advances. Queally failed to launch an effective offence,

which ultimately lost him the fight to a surprising split judges’ decision. In the event’s fight of the night, Brendon Katz and Wade Groth put on an unforgettable war that left the fans in the arena on their feet. For every shot Katz landed, Groth reciprocated, and then some. Ending in a unanimous decision in favour of Groth, both athletes walked out of the Hexagon to rapturous applause from the crowd. Opening the main card was Scottish debutant Danny Henry and the exciting Hanru Botha. Botha, a tough wrestler from Polokwane, began the fight doing what comes naturally - going straight for the double-leg takedown. The Scot showed his pedigree by keeping calm and sinking in a triangle choke from his back to seal the win early in the first round. Fight of the Night was awarded to Katz vs. Groth for their three-round epic. Performance bonuses were awarded to Europeans Tomasz Kowalkowski and Cyril Asker.
