MADIBA’S DREAM DRAWS NEAR “Children of Southern Africa too have a right to be cared for and to receive the best medical treatment available when they are ill and to receive treatment that compares with the best in the world.” With these words, the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela showed huge concern for child healthcare, and now his legacy will soon be fulfilled with the development of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH), which is nearing completion. Mandela’s vision of creating a specialist healthcare facility that will complement the current healthcare system in Southern Africa is fast becoming a reality – with construction having commenced on 22 April 2014, the development of the NMCH has reached its halfway mark. Situated on land offered by the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Education Campus, adjacent to the Wits Medical School and the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Jubilee Road in Parktown, the hospital will be a world-class, highly advanced specialised children’s hospital that will shape the lives of the children of Africa and shape the future of a greater Africa. It will work on a referral basis across all its centres of excellence. Signifying a major step in paediatric healthcare on the African continent, the NMCH will be a groundbreaking first for Johannesburg, as it will be the fifth specialised children’s hospital of its kind to be developed in Africa. The continent boasts two

The Children’s Hospital will be a credible demonstration of a commitment of African leaders, to place the rights of children in the forefront, nothing less would be enough - Nelson Mandela specialised children’s hospitals in Egypt, one in Nairobi and one in Cape Town. In order to create one of the biggest children’s hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust (NMCHT) is fundraising to reach a target of R1-billion to build and equip the hospital, as well as to train medical professionals to work in it. The hospital is the first of its kind to be built solely on the generosity of the world’s citizens – ordinary South Africans, Africans, philanthropists, corporate institutions and even children themselves (as part of the For Kids By Kids initiative) have given donations. The hard work of the NMCHT and compassion of all the donors, both locally and abroad, have thus far raised R620-million. All efforts are focused on raising the balance required in time for the hospital’s opening in 2016. “Since its inception, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust has gotten support from donors, partners and various stakeholders who took it upon themselves to make sure that this, a living statue for Madiba, is built. And as we look towards its completion, we ask everyone to come together and help us finish this building,” says NMCHT Chief Executive Officer, Sibongile Mkhabela. The 238-bed, eight-theatre hospital will specialise in haematology, oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, craniofacial, renal and general paediatric surgery. The NMCH will also appoint specialists to treat communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. The hospital will boast roughly 800 staff members, including approximately 150 doctors and 451 paediatric nursing professionals, as well as allied services. If needed, the hospital has made provision to expand up to a 300-bed facility within five years of opening. “The children’s hospital will be a credible demonstration of a commitment of African leaders, to place the rights of children in the forefront, nothing less would be enough,” said Madiba. With construction set to be completed by year-end, Africa anticipates the first patient, who is expected to be admitted in the second quarter of 2016.

THE LOVE GURU Pieter Toerien and KickstArt present the smash-hit cult-rock musical Little Shop of Horrors at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 12 June to 09 August. The all-star local cast is headed by Alan Committie as Seymour, the would-be botanist, and the inimitable Candice Van Litsenborgh as his ditzy love interest, Audrey. Michael Richard plays Mr Mushnik, Seymour’s miserly employer. The production team is equally impressive: the show is directed by Steven Stead, with sets by Greg King and costumes by Terrence Bray. Musical direction is by Evan Roberts and Shelley Maclean, choreography by Janine Bennewith and lighting by Tina Le Roux. The wacky story tells of a hapless New York florist’s assistant in the seedy part of town who inadvertently rears an outspoken man-eating alien plant. The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film of the same name, written by Howard Ashman and directed by Roger Corman. The cult film starred Rick Moranis as a career-defining Seymour,

Ellen Greene as Audrey and Steve Martin as the sadistic dentist. Little Shop of Horrors spoofs the tradition of B-grade sci-fi movies with a delicious pastiche of 50s music and comic book imagery. The music, composed by Alan Menken in the style of 1960s rock and roll, doowop and early Motown, includes several show-stoppers including Skid Row (Downtown), Somewhere That’s Green, and Suddenly, Seymour, as well as the title song. Pieter Toerien produced the original South African production of Little Shop of Horrors in 1984, and local audiences fell in love with the man-eating plant Audrey II. Eddie Eckstein and Andre Hattingh starred in the lead roles. Tickets range from R100 to R325. This show is set to stun! The Love Guru is the latest comedic offering from Sans Moonsamy and comes to The Lyric at Gold Reef City on Friday 19 June. The storyline follows the biggest love conference in the world taking place in South Africa right next door to Vishnoo’s Karaoke Klub. Vishnoo, played by Moonsamy, sees an opportunity to attract people to his venue. He concocts a Love Potion Cocktail as a marketing gimmick to woo customers to his venue but mistakenly drinks it himself and starts falling in love with his only staff member, the multipurpose worker Thembisani, resulting in some hilarious consequences. Thembisani is played by the young up-and-coming comedic talent, Kerusha Kisten. A former international beauty queen who won the Miss India Globe title in 2010, Kisten has since been a top 10 finalist on Top Billing’s presenter search and she has written and performed a few live shows. The show also features zany characters (all played by Moonsamy and Kisten) such as Nicky Maharaj, the crazy cheating girlfriend, Guru Deepa aka The Lust Guru, Willie Ray Virus, B o n g a Dube, and Deepak Shakur. Audience participation is what sets The Love Guru apart, as Aunty Deepa will be bringing certain audience members on stage and discussing their issues...live. PRETTY THINGS FOR LITTLE THINGS Shoprite and Checkers, in partnership with Age in Action, is once again sponsoring the Pretty Things for Little Things campaign that urges customers, especially senior citizens, to put their creative talents to work to make clothes and toys for needy children. Through the creative and generous contributions made by the public, this campaign has, since its inception in 2003, collected and distributed more than 140 000 handmade clothes, toys and blankets to needy children across South Africa. Shoprite and Checkers, in conjunction with Age in Action, would like to thank everyone who participated in, and contributed to, this worthy initiative over the years, and challenge customers and senior citizens to keep on knitting, sewing, building and crafting so that the joy can be spread even further over the coming years. During last year’s Pretty Things for Little Things campaign, over 20 000 unique handmade items were received. The Pretty Things for Little Things project calls on entrants to make anything practical, durable and safe that a child can wear or play with. Articles can be made of any resources available and can be entered into four categories, namely soft toys, blankets, clothing, and other articles made from materials such as wood, tin or wire. The provincial winners receive gift vouchers to the value of R2500, R2000 and R1500 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in that order, and also go through to the final judging round in which three national winners per category are chosen. National winners receive vouchers to the value of R6000, R4000 and R3000 for the top three positions respectively. There is also a merit prize for the person who enters the most items in his/ her province, as well as for the person who enters the most items nationally. PENSIONER DAY DISCOUNTS AND STORE CARDS PENSIONER POWER

Greetings pensioners, I trust that you found our previous Pensioner Power pages informative, useful and humorous. I have further suggestions, information and advice for you in this edition – about the advantages of certain store cards – that I think you will find helpful in easing the financial strain on your pockets. These little tips will continue to save you money and assist you in finding the best pensioner deals in the South. I have to admit I’m not much of a handyman, but recently I went through to Builders Warehouse for a bit of browsing and shopping. It’s best to go on a Wednesday because that’s the day you will get a 10% pensioner discount – that appears to be on all items. Again, they need to see your ID book or driver’s licence and input your telephone number for some reason. I found them very friendly this time around. At the moment they seem to be in the process of a big store renovation and just as I’ve got used to knowing where to find all the products, they appear to be moving them all around in an effort to confuse me. Speaking of store discounts, we do our general grocery shopping at our local Pick n Pay. We have a Smart Shopper card and accumulate points throughout the year. We usually redeem our

points in December and buy a turkey for our Christmas dinner. However, our local Pick n Pay offers a 5% pensioner discount on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I’m informed that pensioner discounts are available on different days at different Pick n Pays in the South. It’s worth checking up on the Pick n Pay in your area - although my brotherin-law in Roodepoort tells me that no such deals are available out on the West Rand. (Just one niggle that irks me – sometimes the service at the tills can be a little unfriendly and often we have to pack our own bags). I mentioned previously that Clicks stores no longer post their savings vouchers. Since I switched to their new system I save money directly at the till, without having to cut up coupons and to remember to take them to the shop and un-crumple them from my pockets. I can’t remember how many times I also lost those little coupons. This used to be a time-consuming and unfriendly process where they had to scan the coupons, and when that didn’t work the teller had to input the code numbers manually. Now they just swipe your card and your discount savings are revealed instantly, and you can choose to cash them in on the spot – or not, as you prefer. It’s a much friendlier system and they also issue your Clicks ClubCard magazine at the till if you qualify for a free copy. They have become most efficient with emails

and SMSes, informing you of any discounts or points you may have earned. Well done to Clicks for improving and adapting their system for the needs of today’s modern society. They also have a double points day every second Wednesday, so if you don’t yet own a Clicks ClubCard, then maybe it’s time to apply for one. It is free and there are no hidden costs or charges. Dis-Chem also has a store card – a Loyalty Benefits Card – that earns you points at the till which can also be used in conjunction with an e-Bucks card. Check the bottom of your cash slip to see the number of points you have earned. My wife likes to save up these points (from both cards) and when there is a sizeable amount saved she can redeem the points for expensive face cream products. Who am I to complain over the price of beauty!

Trophy drive

The new Mégane Renault Sport 275 Trophy is the second Mégane Renault Sport R.S. to be introduced to South African shores in 2015. Following in the footsteps of the Mégane R.S. 265 LUX 2.0 Turbo which motored into Mzansi in February, it succeeds the Mégane R.S. 265 Trophy which debuted in the country in May 2012 and takes up the mantle of the flagship of the Mégane Renault Sport range. A powerful, sporty yet sophisticatedly-styled addition to the highly acclaimed and perennially popular R.S. line-up in South Africa, it boasts a multitude of innovative and intelligent technology features and fitments as standard and is sure to meet, and exceed, expectations. Since the launch of Mégane Renault Sport in 2004, Mégane R.S. has set the pace for sports cars and amassed a host of accolades locally and internationally. At the heart of the new flagship Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy are well proven sporting and technical credentials that have been re-worked, up-scaled and taken to the next level according to Brian Smith, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Renault South Africa. “This is an all-round performance car that combines everyday driveability with an even sharper track performance. The CUP chassis fully taps the potential of the F1-inspired upgraded Renault Sport 2.0.

four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Premiering on the Megane R.S. 275 Trophy, it has undergone significant fine-tuning and been optimised to produce maximum power of 275 bhp,” says Smith. With 38 years of Formula 1 expertise under its belt, the R.S. Technologies’ (RST) engineering team has successfully transferred its technical know-how to Renault’s production cars. Patrice Ratti, Chief Executive Officer of Renault Sport Technologies explains, however, that when a Mégane R.S. undergoes an upgrade, “our objective is not only to improve the technical specs but also to develop a vehicle that is more distinctive both visually and from a performance perspective a car that performs even better on the track but which is still suited to everyday motoring.” Ratti adds: “Reflecting our approach to motorsports, the RST team seeks to make progress in every area in order to develop innovative solutions that make our car the market reference and, with its moderate fuel consumption and CO² emissions, the new Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy is also a car that

addresses today’s environmental concerns.” Smith says, “Continuing in the tradition of exclusive sports performance cars, RST has allied exceptional dynamic qualities with advanced versatility that provide an even more exhilarating and dynamic edge to this

class-leading hatchback. The new Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy is a vehicle that we believe to be the most accomplished sports hatch currently on the market.” The new Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy Turbo has arrived in South Africa. May the force be with you.

ELECTRIFYING EFC 40

EXTREME ACTION: Wade Groth (on the right) defeated Brendon Katz via unanimous decision (Source: www.efcworldwide.com) The landmark Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Africa 40 event took place on Friday 05 June in front of a capacity crowd at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena. The crowd was treated to a night of outstanding fights from start to finish. The main event featured former welterweight champion Dino “The Lion” Bagattin and the young sensation Dricus “Stillknocks” du Plessis. The contest began at a high pace and maintained that level throughout. From the start, Bagattin and du Plessis exchanged massive punches and kicks in a frenetic first round. Midway through the second, du Plessis shot for the takedown. After a back-and-forth scramble, the youngster took advantage of an error from Bagattin and showed his proficiency by taking his opponent’s back and sinking

rained down with heavy ground and pound of his own. A visibly battered Potts failed to answer the second round bell, resulting in a verbal submission victory for Asker. EFC President Cairo Howarth confirmed in the post-event press conference that the Frenchman will be facing Andrew van Zyl for the heavyweight title in October. Wrestling sensation Igeu “Smiley” Kabesa extended his undefeated winning streak to six fights with a dominant display over Irishman Peter “Showstopper” Queally. Kabesa, who looked to be on his back foot for the entire fight, used his position to counter and score massive takedowns, thereby completely nullifying Queally’s advances. Queally failed to launch an effective offence, which ultimately lost him the fight to a surprising split judges’ decision. In the event’s fight of the night, Brendon Katz

a tight rear naked choke, forcing him to tap. A jubilant du Plessis expressed his delight at his performance and thanked the crowd in attendance, saying, “If you guys enjoyed my fight, then I enjoyed it.” A veteran of the organisation, Bagattin promised the crowd he would be back as always, ready to give the fans another show. The penultimate bout of the evening saw former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight and EFC champion Ruan “Fangzz” Potts make his anticipated return to the Hexagon to face Frenchman Cyril “Silverback” Asker. Potts took the fight to Asker, going straight for the takedown from the get go. Taking advantage of his position, Potts laid down heavy ground and pound, opening up a laceration on Asker’s eye. Surviving the initial onslaught, Asker reversed positions and

and Wade Groth put on an unforgettable war that left the fans in the arena on their feet. For every shot Katz landed, Groth reciprocated and then some. Ending in a unanimous decision in favour of Groth, both athletes walked out of the Hexagon to rapturous applause from the crowd. Opening the main card was Scottish debutant Danny Henry and the exciting Hanru Botha. Botha, a tough wrestler from Polokwane, began the fight doing what comes naturally – going straight for the double-leg takedown. The Scotsman showed his pedigree by keeping calm and sinking in a triangle choke from his back to seal the win early in the first round. Fight of the Night was awarded to Katz vs. Groth for their three-round epic. Performance bonuses were awarded to Europeans Tomasz Kowalkowski and Cyril Asker.
