Cosas threatens to close

all private schools

“This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that only public schools would close. The virus does not care whether your father is a billionaire.” The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) have indicated their intention to shut down private schools in all parts of the country. Cosas say that if public schools are forced to close due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, then private schools should not be allowed to operate. The group have vocally opposed the reopening of schools and have urged the department of basic education to make good on their frequently repeated promise that ‘no child will

be left behind’. Cosas president Douglas Ngobeni said thousands of children would be left behind if private schools were exempt from government’s closure orders. “The Congress of South Africans Students will be shutting down private schools in all parts of the country,” Ngobeni said. “This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that only public schools would close. The virus does not care whether your father is a billionaire.” Ngobeni has not indicated how Cosas intends to shut down private schools, though the assumption is that it would be through organised protest activity, The South African reported. Last month Cosas shut down the

Bloekombos High School in Cape Town, sending 170 matric pupils and the school cooks home, the group also disrupted classes Thandokhulu High School in Mowbray. Cosas says government’s approach gives private schools an unfair academic advantage. “By the way, private schools were continuing with e-learning while we were sitting at home doing nothing,” Cosas spokesperson Buntu Joseph said. “When it comes to that paper, and now we will be closing for four weeks, and they will be continuing with the curriculum, so we feel that there is inequality,” he said. “So as Congress of South African Students, we are saying that we are going to shut down private schools.”

Scammers are posing as fire brigade officials Residents are warned not to fall victim to scammers posing as ‘Fire Brigade’ officials from the City. These scammers, armed with a ‘compliance’ form bearing the City’s logo, target schools and Non-Governmental Organisations around Katlehong and present themselves as City officials. They indicate that they are tasked to investigate if the school or organisation complies with the City’s fire and safety practices and issue fines of non-compliance. The form they present has an account number that they claim the purported fine must be paid into, claiming it belongs to the municipality. This scam was brought to the attention of the City and already five cases of fraud have been opened with the SAPS and are now under investigation. The notice form used by the scammers has an incorrect e-mail address, order number and contact number. All official CoE correspondence emails have an ekurhuleni.gov.za not a gmail address; Fraudulent orders are hand written and don’t have the DEMS/FSS reference number. An official order number is typed, and signed by the official inspector as well as the client. In order to comply it must have the contact number 011 999 0193 and the e-mail address ; The correct contact number during working hours for the Executive Manager in charge of the Proactive Section is 011 999 0193; The offices are located at DEMS Head Quarters, Emergency Services, 3 Hawley Road, Bedfordview. Residents must note that members of the emergency services must at all times be in uniform, with a nametag, and drive an official vehicle with City of Ekurhuleni branding. The notice form should be hand written with the correct email address and contact details of the relevant officer. Members of the public suspecting they are scammed can contact the Executive Manager Proactive Services; Sandra Du Rand on 011 999 0193 or e-mail Sandra.Durand@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Bok legend Beast on Black Lives Matter:

We’ve reached a pivotal crossroads Springbok legend Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira believes South Africans have reached a crossroads in the conversation surrounding the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Inspired by national captain Siya Kolisi’s powerful stance on the matter last weekend, Mtawarira took to Instagram to add his voice. Born in Zimbabwe and having had his Springbok status temporarily threatened by the South African government back in 2009 because of that heritage, Mtawarira went on to play 117 Tests for his country. In the post, he points to the unity displayed by the Springbok class of 2019 that won the World Cup in Japan under Kolisi as an example of what can be achieved in South Africa. Mtawarira, who has now fully retired from the game, said it was important for players to bring light to

certain experiences they may have had, even if it makes for some uncomfortable conversations. “Throughout my career I enjoyed support from many different people from different backgrounds, races and locations,” said Mtawarira. “Sport united people and it can make a difference in someone’s life and it made a huge difference in my life. “The biggest success that I achieved (2019 World Cup) came about because we as players chose to look past our differences: the colour of our skin, our different backgrounds, our different cultures. We embraced each other, we became one and we were afforded the same opportunity. “I think it’s the same for everyone that is in the corporate space, in schools and in the community. We all need to look past our differences and the colour of our skin ... embrace each other for our differ-

ences because there is strength in that. “We need to afford each other the same opportunities to excel. “I really feel that, in this time, we’re at a crossroads and a pivotal moment where we have to make a decision. “There are certain things we might have endured in the past and we have to bring them to light because for us to move forward, we have to address the big elephant in the room. “We have to bring about those conversations that will bring discomfort to everybody but that will allow us to grow. I feel the decisions that we make today will impact the future of our kids and the next generation. “We need to make a change and bring about a difference and be the catalysts of this moment.” - Compiled by Lloyd Burnard
