In the last few decades, Lagos has experienced sharp increase in sprawls due to this massive influx of people. Lagos does not have enough resources to provide so with increased pressure for housing amongst other things, slums expand. The main agreed objective of this project is to change the urban environment and inject new vitality through planned adjustments of existing areas to meet current and future demands of urban living and working

WHERE IS THIS SITE? THE SITE The site area is located in the first belt of Iwaya, one of the more popular slums in Lagos which houses both a residential and commercial neighborhood in Yaba, Lagos. It is bounded by 6 streets (Salami, Arowolo, Audu Baale, Aderupoko, Moshalashi, Balogun). Iwaya is characterized by its community Market that serves the residents of the Iwaya neighborhood and those around, granting them easy access to purchase goods. This has had a great influence on almost every aspect of their daily lives, their livelihood; the vast majority of Iwaya residents are traders.

THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL BREATHING SQUARE This is a myth by the way, a widespread one. To achieve quality of urban life, the outdoor spaces consists of a balanced mixture of positive enclosed spaces and negative open spaces. The enclosure makes us feel more comfortable and secure, and this is why the positive space was used a lot more in my cluster. The openings and airspaces are oriented towards the direction of the incoming wind for optimal harvesting.

STRATEGIES Walking, bicycling and public transportation are prioritized ahead of car traffic. One shared space road connects the roads north of the site to give access to the buildings and connecting secondary streets. The rest of the streets and paths further connects the residents in the courtyards. The road hierarchy will also be a tool to divide the area into zones, and distinguish between the degree of public access. The main roads (shared spaces) trough the site will have asphalt. It creates a clean and simple expression. • Wide continuous pedestrian sidewalk • Continuous cycle tracks with green buffer • Raised Crossings • Wide junction edges

Thanks to globalisation and industrialization it is not uncommon to see a large big box store, centred upon a landscape without rhyme or reason in relation to the local physical. Neighbourhood markets no longer symbolize what they once stood for, in an effort to ease design and construction process their architecture is now regarded as box-like and disposable, buildings that can be erected anywhere, duplicated and exported regardless of context and place.

ABOUT THE SITE

The central location of the market facilitate s shared usage by the neighbo urhood and the wider commun ity.

WHERE IS THIS SITE? The site is situated at the core of Iwaya, where it is accessible for people through all the sides. There is a high demand for urban activities and public spaces in the precinct, which can enhance the value of the site. The predominant residential domain around the site can facilitate frequent engagement with the market. Iwaya, one of the most popular slums in Lagos, is a residential and commercial neighbourhood in Yaba, Lagos. History has it that the early inhabitants of Iwaya were mostly fishermen and lumber, hence their need to be close to the river. The economic activities of the people of Iwaya then included fishing, trading, lumbering and woodwork.

The Courtyard The placement and orientation of the three building structures defines an interior courtyard, protected from the invasion of automotive traffic, though its ability to contain events is restricted by its lack of territorial boundaries. A new connection between the buildings could provide the physical definition and useframework for the market. The separation between the two buildings forms a gateway into the market. The courtyard not only enhances the experience of the marketplace but also encourages the use of energyefficient passive techniques in the design of the market.

FRONT ELEVATION BRICK Brick is a predominant material used in the southern part of Lagos, easily gotten on site and rammed to form clay bricks. It is energy efficient and it has the ability to regulate the indoor climate, brick as a natural building material remains the clear favourite of building users as it lends the town of Iwaya an identity

03. AN EXPERIENTIAL CHAMBER This project consists of a 17. 64 square meters of space located in the Department of Architecture, University of Lagos. Our client is Dr David Adio Moses, popularly known as DAVAM to lecturers and students alike. He’s an architect and a lecturer. The requirements include a space to foster productive work and relaxation for our clients. The concept we chose to go with goes between post-modern and minimalism. This look combines just enough aesthetic detail to make the interior feel both welcoming and cool at the same time.

This left us with one question: How do you take this underutilised, underwhelming space in one of the most iconic buildings at the University of Lagos and give it new life and meaning? The greatest challenge was to hit the functional brief whilst getting the space planning spot on. The key to this success was that every element be considered, no matter how small it seemed. The visual connection of the space allowed for a seamless flow of space connecting the two halves of the concept on a micro level. The resulting design created a designated corner for our client to relax and work
