MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to the ASA2021 Brisbane Hybrid Conference issue of soundeffects news. It is the first issue of our redesigned e-magazine and each new issue of soundeffects news will explore a single topic with an indepth approach, which will only be available online. This conference release provides you with the most up-to-date program information, great background information on international and national keynote speakers, as well as the latest information about what you can access in person and online.* Due to the unpredictable world we are living in, this year’s conference will be a little different; however, you will be part of a world-class hybrid event developed for sonographers by sonographers. You will have access to over 150 lectures that can be watched for 3 months after the event, a dedicated Cardiac Day on the Saturday, and a Clinical Supervision session on the Friday. If you’re joining us in person, you will also be able to choose from over 80 workshops. Pre and post conference there are many people who make sure the event goes off without a hitch, from volunteers, to partners and staff; literally hundreds of hours go into making the conference a success. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Program Committee of volunteer sonographers who have worked tirelessly with the ASA Office team to deliver the outstanding program with the vast selection of speakers, both internationally and nationally. There will be 18 exhibitors at the conference for you to interact with. We would like to thank all our partners for their continued support of the ASA, the profession and the conference. A special thank you to our Gold Partners without whom we would not be able to deliver you outstanding workshops face to face. This year we will be recognising outstanding achievement within the sonography profession with the Awards of Excellence, new ASA Fellows and the Pru Pratten Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award being announced at the ASA 2021 Awards Evening. This will be a cocktail-style event for those joining us face to face, and for those who can’t, we encourage you to gather your friends and have watch parties to celebrate your fellow sonographers’ achievements.

soundeffects news
The ASA Board and staff are committed to reducing our impact on the environment where we can, and as such, soundeffects news is not printed. Reducing our printing and distribution of our publications, including the conference handbook, is one of a variety of measures we are undertaking to limit our carbon footprint. Our scientific journal Sonography will continue to be printed for those members who request it in that format. We hope you enjoy this issue of soundeffects news, and hopefully we will see you at ASA2021 Brisbane Hybrid, either online or in person. n

Becoming a Fellow is recognition of a member’s significant contribution to the sonography profession and the ASA. Fellowship is recognised as a hallmark of a specialist of the highest professional standing. ASA Fellows Bonita and Sandhya share their thoughts on the significance of becoming a Fellow of the ASA. Besides adding extra letters after my name, I believe that FASA immediately identifies me as a sonographer who has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication and commitment to the profession as well as to the ASA. Receiving FASA was like getting an award silently saying, “Thank you, all of your contributions have not gone unnoticed”.
Being awarded FASA is a recognition of professional excellence and is an achievement in itself. On a personal level, for me it has inspired and motivated me to strive further in the field of sonography. It’s also great when students come up to you and say that you are their role model! – Sandhya Maranna
