Jubilee celebration bonanza! Belgrave, Glascote, Amington and Stonydelph hosted a Jubilee celebration bonanza over the long festive weekend. Not being scared off by the weather, hundreds of people attended the four events and had a great time. There were plenty of fun activities and competitions to take part in and an array of information stands from local services available for residents. Some of the highlights included a 0 to 60 year timeline photograph at the Glascote event and live singing and dance performances at Stonydelph. The inflatable obstacle course and craft activities which featured at all the events proved to be very popular. Mayor of Tamworth Cllr Tina Clements was on hand to announce the winners of the competitions, which gave two residents of each area a once-in-a-lifetime VIP view of the Olympic Torch when it came to the Castle Grounds on June 30. We would like to thank all the partners involved in organising and who took part in the celebrations, including the Community CafĂŠ, who gave loads of their time, and the brilliant TCR FM who provided music and broadcasted the events live on 106.8fm.

Thomas Hardy Court Resident Reaches a Milestone Age A Thomas Hardy Court resident collected her telegram from the Queen after reaching the fantastic age of 100 on Friday March 30. Ida Mandefield celebrated her 100th birthday by having a party at Thomas Hardy Court, where residents got together in the lounge to enjoy a buffet and karaoke. Ida still takes part in the evening bingo and some other activities.

Centenarians send their birthday wishes to the Queen Welbeing helped some of their very special older customers send birthday good wishes to The Queen. Among their 40,000 UK customers, Welbeing has 104 lifeline users aged over 100. To mark the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the centenarians were each invited to be part of a special royal birthday card. Charlene Saunders, Marketing Manager at Welbeing, said: “Everyone at Welbeing is so proud to have so many lifeline customers who have reached this great milestone in their lives. I am sure The Queen will be delighted to receive the card and be reminded of the huge respect older generations have for the Monarchy.”
Coming soon to a street near you! Saxon Hound leads anti-dog fouling campaign The new campaign started in April 2012. The main Mucky Pup – Clean It Up operations will target a number of identified dog fouling hotspots throughout the borough and blitz them for three weeks - one at a time. Council Street Wardens and other authorised officers will visit a hotspot where they will identify dog waste build up. The accumulations will be noted and immediately removed. Owners spotted not cleaning up after their dogs will be given a fixed penalty notice of up to £80. Stop loan sharks! Anyone can be a victim of a loan shark – your family, friends, neighbours and even you. It’s not always easy to spot a loan shark as they come in all shapes and sizes and will at first appear friendly, just part of the community. It is when you can’t pay that they will turn on you. A loan shark is someone who lends cash without a valid consumer credit license. If someone is struggling to pay a debt the loan shark will resort to threats, violence and intimidation to get what he thinks you owe, even if the debt has been paid off several times over. A loan shark will typically have little paperwork and, will add penalty charges for late payments. Sometimes they will add random sums to the bill.
Many victims keep paying because they think they can afford the agreed weekly sum, but they don’t realise how much their continuing weekly payments add up to or they are to afraid to stop payments. Our advice is that you should never go to a loan shark. They do not provide a community service; they are simply out to make money. Someone may be classed as a loan shark if they: l Do not hold a licence from the Office of Fair Trading to operate. l Often offer little or no paperwork. l Often refuse to tell the borrower how much they still
owe, when they will finish repayments. l Often increase the debt or add additional amounts. l May take items as security including passports, bank cards and driving licences. l May resort to violence, threats and intimidation.
What is being done to stop this? The Illegal Money Lending Team investigates illegal money lending and any related offences- in the past this has included violence, blackmail, drugs offences, threats, kidnap and even rape.

Tamworth Borough Council has successfully gained an injunction, with Power of Arrest at Court, against a Wilnecote resident who persistently allowed her electricity supply to be unlawfully connected to the mains, in order to avoid paying for it.

Growing your own vegetables is a lovely pastime, which has many positive benefits including healthier food, exercise, working outdoors and saving money.
Having a BBQ? Follow these safety tips to make sure we don’t turn up to save your bacon! • • • • •
Never leave a lit barbecue unattended. Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste. Only light a barbecue with recognised fuels NOT petrol or white spirit. Always keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies. Enjoy yourself, but don’t drink too much if you are in charge of a barbecue. Never use a barbecue indoors or inside a tent – the carbon monoxide that they produce can kill. If you are using a gas barbecue always ensure that you keep gas cylinders out of direct sunlight. Do not use the barbecue if you suspect a gas leak.

Don’t forget to register to vote
Tenants and their young children took part on the day and enjoyed planting their own vegetable produce. This activity helped those without any experience of gardening to take part and learn new skills while having fun. Tamworth Borough Council’s repairs contractor, Mears, kindly donated vegetable beds which will be accessible to all supported housing tenants and their children, so they can watch their produce grow in their own back yard.
Voter registration forms will soon be delivered to every property in Tamworth. The Electoral Registration Officer, John Wheatley, is urging you to return your form as soon as possible to make sure that your voice is heard in the forthcoming Police Crime Commissioner election taking place on Thursday November 15.

Change of Repairs Contractor for Tamworth Borough Council Mears is the new repairs contractor for all responsive maintenance. They took over the repairs service from Morrison on 30 March 2012. Morrison carries out all gas servicing. Gas repairs reported to Mears and any gas repairs are passed to Morrison to arrange appointments directly with the tenants.

All tenants whose properties will be included in any of the planned works listed below will receive an introductory letter, 21 day, 14 day, 7 day letter and precommencement survey prior to works commencing.
The Bathroom Scheme is scheduled to start in July and 433 properties will be completed before April.
The Kitchen and Window Scheme is scheduled to start in August on 338 properties. The Kitchen Scheme has identified 338 properties and Window Scheme 333 properties.
Environmental Works – Garage surveys are in progress at the moment and tenants will be consulted on works moving forward as part of the environmental scheme.
All repairs are appointed if possible using the new Landlord Services Repairs Policy:
Emergency Repairs: These will be attended to and made safe within three hours. The repair will then be completed as soon as possible thereafter.
Appointed repairs: These will be completed within five working days or temporary works undertaken until an effective repair can be completed under a planned programme.
Planned Works: This was previously known as a 26 day and 130 day jobs – to improve efficiency these jobs have been changed to 90 days and it is anticipated work will be done within this time scale. 3,421 Repairs Calls taken and completed to date and 309 Out of Hours Calls have been taken and completed to date.
Customer Care Results May 2012 The Mears Customer Care teams and the Tamworth Branch have been working hard to make sure the tenants of Tamworth get the service they deserve. The customer surveys are carried out by an external company called Asert and this company employs tenants. Mears enables Asert to mystery shop all repairs jobs carried out each month. If you do get a call these are fellow tenants who are tasked with reviewing our customer satisfaction. In May 2012, 96% of tenants were satisfied with the Responsive Repairs Service provided by Mears. This is against a target of 85%. Mears also measure excellence and 69% of tenants rate the repairs service as excellent. Again in May, 1,133 repairs were carried out on tenants’ homes. 98.5% of the jobs were completed on time.

Mears launches new Handyperson scheme
From 1 June 2012, Tamworth Borough Council’s new Repairs Contractors Mears introduced a new reliable Handyperson Service for sheltered housing tenants. The Handyperson Service can help you with a wide range of minor works and repairs by a person you can trust. All work is undertaken by experienced staff who are checked by the Criminal Record Bureau. If you have minor repairs/works that you need help with then please contact your Independent Living Manager or alternatively email:

Taking action on anti-social behaviour In March this year, the Estate Management Team launched its new Landlord Services Anti-Social Behaviour Policy in the Council Chamber to Councillors, tenants, and other local social landlords in the area. The housing department, Community Safety Partnership and tenants, with the help of a specialist housing solicitor, worked together to develop a policy which benefited customers and tied in with the Housemark Respect Standard for Anti-Social Behaviour. The new procedure is aimed at providing improved customer service and support to people complaining about anti-social behaviour, as well as ensuring that prompt and appropriate action is taken against those who commit antisocial behaviour, where evidence suggests that this is proportionate. Housing officers have undertaken training, and initial feedback from customers is that the service, which includes a home visit to every complainant, is much more customer focused and makes people who have made the complaint feel as though they are more involved in the process. It also means that more people are staying with the case until the problem is solved, instead of making the complaint and then dropping it before it can be resolved. In addition, some new leaflets have been developed for customers and these are available in our reception area. The Estate Management Team has applied for Housemark Respect Accreditation and has just undergone its initial mock assessment. It is hoped a formal bid for accreditation will be undertaken in the autumn. Thinking of leaving your council property? If you want to move out, it is very important to end your tenancy properly. You can't just hand the keys in and walk away. If you do this, you could end up still being liable for the rent, even if you're no longer living there. You are required to give four weeks notice that you plan to move out.
Q. Must the notice be made in writing? A. Yes. Details to include are your name and address, the date, your forwarding address and when you will be handing the keys in.

Sheltered & Supported Housing Residents Celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Residents from Tamworth Borough Council’s supported housing schemes and all 11 sheltered housing schemes joined in on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Each scheme held their own event where residents came together to enjoy a wonderful day. Some of the celebrations included crown making, face painting, games, food & refreshments, barbecue, garden parties, music and dance. Plant a Pot events Seniors United is a group of Sheltered Scheme residents who get together on the third Wednesday of every month to discuss housing issues relevant to sheltered accommodation. Following on from last year’s ‘Plant a Pot ‘events, three sheltered schemes were chosen to hold an event with a Diamond Jubilee theme. The pots could be planted inside or outside of the schemes and within easy reach of the individuals taking part to allow participation by all.

ESTATE WALKABOUTS
Leyfields residents invited to join estate walkabout Residents living in Leyfields are being invited to do their bit to help improve the areas where they live by joining an estate walkabout. The walkabout is taking place on Thursday August 16 and starts from Thomas Hardy Court at 2pm. Residents are invited to join housing officers, caretakers, police, Street Scene and other organisations on the tour of the estate, where they will be able to identify problems/issues and make suggestions on how to improve the area. An action plan to tackle the issues raised will then be put together, and used to plan improvement works. Organisers are hoping that a large number of Leyfields residents will join in the walkabout and have their say on issues and concerns affecting the area where they live. Cllr Michael Greatorex, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “The estate walkabouts are the ideal opportunity for residents to tell us exactly what needs to be done in the areas where they live, and to be involved in tackling those issues. I would urge residents of Leyfields to get involved, as they are the best people to tell us how things can be improved.” Successful walkabouts have already taken place at the Tinkers Green estate in Wilnecote and in Glascote Heath. The final estate walkabout of the summer will take place in Kettlebrook on Thursday September 20.

The event involved young residents rolling their sleeves up and getting involved with planting vegetables and seeds, tasting healthy foods and engaging in healthy living and lifestyle awareness for young people.
DIY Demonstration Day In partnership with the Council’s previous repairs and maintenance contractor a DIY demonstration day was held to provide an opportunity for local residents to receive training on basic DIY skills.

Your rent is important Our Rents Team work with you to keep your rent account clear and we want to help you avoid getting behind with your rent. We offer you support if you fall into arrears through talking to a member of the team. The Rents Team will always try to make arrangements for people who fall into arrears to pay their debt off. During the year April 2011 to March 2012, the Income Team successfully made contact with 15,197 of our customers We collected 99.16% of rent debit.

Your neighbourhood As a social landlord, our commitment runs deeper than simply supplying houses. We want to keep the neighbourhood and communal areas that we manage clean and safe, and to work alongside other organisations to help promote social, environmental and economic wellbeing in the areas we work. Our tenant inspectors have been up and running for nearly 12 months now, regularly inspecting communal cleaning out and about on our estates. They will now extend their expertise during 2012/2013 to include void lettable standards and customer access arrangements. We collected 562 items of fly tipping within this period, 100% of it was removed within our response time of three working days. We removed 17 reported cases of offensive graffiti, 100% of it was removed within our response time of 48 hours.

Proud day for Tamworth as Olympic Torch came to town More than 40,000 people lined the streets of Tamworth and packed into the Castle Grounds to welcome the Olympic Torch on Saturday June 30. 10 runners carried the Torch through Tamworth’s leg of the national relay. Tamworth was proud to support the 2012 Olympic Games with a spectacular Olympic event in the Castle Grounds, including an opening ceremony with choirs and hundreds of school children taking part to welcome the Torch. Pathway Project receive FaithAction Award

On Friday April 27, FaithAction presented their Community in Focus Award to Pathway Project, for their work in supporting victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Daniel Singleton, the National Executive Director of FaithAction, talked about Pathway as an excellent example of the Big Society at work in local communities. Tamworth MP Christopher Pincher then presented the award and spoke about the valuable contribution that Pathway makes, across both Tamworth Borough and Lichfield District. He visited the Hope Centre about a year ago and was impressed with the diversity of services available to victims of abuse in the home. He was also very interested in the Family Justice Centre, South East Staffs, which Pathway was the lead agency during its development. The Centre opened two weeks ago and is providing a multiagency service, which makes accessing help easier and ensures that all needs are met in one place. The Director of Pathway Project, Kathy Coe, said: “We are delighted to receive this award for our work in the community. We feel privileged to share the journey of people as they seek to rebuild their lives, and feel passionately about the
work that we do. Everyone involved in Pathway is part of our story and deserves the recognition which comes with the award. FaithAction has given us opportunities, as a faith group, to share into developing strategies around domestic and sexual abuse, particularly with the Department of Health.” Pathway Project can provide a listening ear, a place of safety, support and counselling, as well as many other services. They can be contacted through a 24-hour helpline on 01543 676800, or by dropping into the Hope Centre on Upper St John Street in Lichfield.
