Sporting Heroes • Tamworth Football Club legend Charlie Coggins played his debut game for the Lambs at the age of 14. • F amous cross-country jockey, Arthur Birch who won the Grand National in 1904, riding Moifaa, was from Bonehill. • F ormer Swindon, Queens Park Rangers, Everton and West Bromwich Albion striker, Peter Eastoe was born in Dordon. •A lbert Brown was born in Kettlebrook, Tamworth in 1879. The lightning-fast footballer known as the ‘Tamworth Sprinter’ played for both Aston Villa and Southampton. He played in the FA Cup final of 1902 against Sheffield United, and in a game against Northampton in December 1901 he scored straight from the kick-off and went on to complete a hat-trick within the first 5 minutes. The Saints eventually won 11-0 with Brown scoring 7 in total. • T amworth-born footballer Albert Mullard, who played for Crewe, Stoke and Port Vale served as a Marine in World War II before he became a professional sportsman. After being captured by the Germans in 1941, he was held in a prison camp where he played for a Marines XI – after his mother sent him a pair of football boots in a Red Cross parcel. •A thlete Dave Black, who competed in the Montreal and Moscow Olympics, was born in Tamworth in 1952 and competed for Tamworth Athletics Club.
Anthony Philip “Tony” Coton (born 19 May 1961) is an English former footballer who played as a goalkeeper from 1978 to 1999. Born in Tamworth, Staffordshire, he made 500 appearances in the Football League and Premier League playing as a goalkeeper for Birmingham City, Watford, Manchester City and Sunderland. He came out of retirement briefly in 2004 for Hereford United following a goalkeeping crisis. He was renowned for his excellent reflexes and shot-stopping abilities.
GARY MASON Gary Mason is a British motorcycle road racer, born 4th May 1979 in Tamworth, Staffordshire. He is a former British Superbike Championship Priveteers Cup champion.

MEDICINE • Anne Rowney, the Tamworth woman who was the first matron of Guy’s Hospital in London, was born in 1678. She is believed to be buried under the hospital’s new extension. •H ints Hall, which was demolished in 1966, was the home of Sir John Floyer (1639-1734), the first physician to recognise the importance of measuring the human pulse in diagnosing illness. • The famous Physician John Clarke lived at Wigginton Lodge and was one of only ten licentiates in midwifery created by the College of Physicians in the late eighteenth century.
People, Planes & Automobiles • In 1910, pioneering aviator Claude Grahame-White crash landed near Tamworth during an attempt to fly from London to Manchester. He was attempting to win a £10,000 prize offered by Lord Northcliffe, proprietor of the Daily Mail. • When Beatrice Lillie, the starlet wife of the 5th Sir Robert Peel returned to Drayton Manor in April 1944, she flew back into England on the same plane as Ernest Hemingway who was heading to the UK to report on World War II. • The following are all believed to have owned a Tamworth-built Reliant car. Beatrice Gladys “Bea” Lillie Beatrice Gladys “Bea” Lillie (May 29, 1894 – January 20, 1989) was an actress and comedic performer. Following her 1920 marriage to Sir Robert Peel in England, she was known in private life as Lady Peel. Sheridan Morley noted in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography that “Lillie’s great talents were the arched eyebrow, the curled lip, the fluttering eyelid, the tilted chin, the ability to suggest, even in apparently innocent material, the possible double entendre” She was married, on January 20, 1920, at the church of St. Paul, Drayton Bassett, Fazeley, Staffordshire, to Sir Robert Peel, 5th Baronet. She eventually separated from her husband (but the couple never divorced); he died in 1934. Their only child, Sir Robert Peel, 6th Baronet, was killed in action aboard HMS Tenedos (H04) in Colombo Harbour, Ceylon (present-day) Sri Lanka in 1942. During World War II, Lillie was an inveterate entertainer of the troops. Before she went on stage one day, she learned her son was killed in action. She refused to postpone the performance saying “I’ll cry tomorrow.”

Scholars & Scientists William Whiston (9 December 1667 – 22 August 1752) was an English theologian, historian, and mathematician, a leading figure in the popularisation of the ideas of Isaac Newton. He is now probably best known for his translation of the Antiquities of the Jews and other works by Josephus, his A New Theory of the Earth, and his Arianism. Whiston succeeded his mentor Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Having lost the position over his theological views, he spent the rest of his life as a lecturer and writer. Whiston was born to Josiah Whiston and Katherine Rosse at Norton-juxta-Twycross, in Leicestershire, where his father was rector. He was educated privately, for his health, and so that he could act as amanuensis to his blind father. He studied at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Tamworth, Staffordshire. After his father’s death, he entered Clare College, Cambridge as a sizar on 30 June 1686. He applied himself to mathematical study, was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) (1690), and AM (1693), and was elected Fellow in 1691 and probationary senior Fellow in 1693. Sir Ernest William Titterton who was born in Tamworth in 1916 and passed away in 1990 was one of the world’s foremost nuclear scientists. In July 1945 he was a senior member of the timing group that fired the first nuclear weapon at Alamogordo, New Mexico.

The Mercian Trail, Living History & Ghostly Tales The rich heritage of Tamworth has placed it as one of the most appealing destinations to visit and get a real flavour of different historical periods, all with their own unique story to tell.
The Mercian Trail The Mercian Trail Partnership aims to tell the emerging story of the Staffordshire Hoard and the Anglo-Saxon history of the region, through a series of informative permanent and temporary displays and a programme of outreach activities aimed at residents and visitors alike. As the ancient capital of Mercia and once home to the King of Mercia’s palace, Tamworth’s history is crammed with stories of intrigue and warfare. Visitors to Tamworth Castle will explore more about the power struggles of the Anglo-Saxon era, the battles, the blows and the bloodshed with new interactive displays and regular historical re-enactments of events.

The Ghosts of Tamworth Castle The Castle has a number of reported sightings over the years and even when you talk to the locals most will say, “Oh yes, we all know the Castle is haunted.”
The Lady’s Chamber (The Haunted Room: 12th century – Solar, The Black Lady Legend has it that the ‘Black Lady’ (a 9th century nun called Editha) haunts this room. Her nuns were said to have been expelled from Polesworth Abbey by the first Baron Marmion. The continued prayers of her homeless nuns eventually called her from her grave and one night in 1139, after a lavish banquet, the 3rd Baron Marmion saw a vision of her whilst in his bedchamber. She prophesied that unless the nuns were restored to Polesworth, he would meet an untimely and painful death. Just before she vanished she struck him on his side with the point of her crosier and the wound was so terrible that the whole castle was awoken by his cries. Seeing him so tormented with pain his friends advised him to confess himself to a priest and restore the nuns to the Abbey. His pain only ceased when this vow was taken and the nuns were allowed to return.

Anglo-Saxon Times Tamworth, The Ancient Capital of Mercia The Anglo-Saxons came to Staffordshire in the late 6th century, as groups of settlers or tribes. Mercia, or Mierce in Anglo-Saxon, means boundary and the area grew from a number of these separate tribal settlements. The Mercians gradually conquered most of the other Midland tribes to become a powerful kingdom stretching from the Humber to the Thames. The rest of the country was ruled by the kingdoms of Northumbria and Wessex. Tamworth was the heartland of the Mercian Kingdom which had a royal church at Repton, a religious centre at Lichfield and the King’s main residence at Tamworth. It is certain that the Mercian Kings spent more time at Tamworth than anywhere else, and it is thought that there was a royal palace at Tamworth by the end of the 7th century, situated on the site close to St. Editha’s Church. Originally, this palace would have been a timber hall with a chapel and somewhere for horses to be stabled. Evidence from signed charters also show that the Mercian royal families were regularly in Tamworth during the festivals of Christmas and Easter, between 751 and 857 AD. The most well known Mercian Kings are Penda (625-655), Wulfhere (657-674), Aethelred (674-704), Aethelbald (716-757) and Offa (757-796).

Tamworth is also known to have been important within Mercia, as it had a water mill which ground grain for food for the settlement and its livestock. The mill is believed to be the earliest post Roman water mill found in Britain. It was powered by the River Anker and used mill stones traded to King Offa from the French King Charlemagne, in exchange for English woollen cloaks. Mercian power began to decline after the death of King Offa and by the 10th century it lost its independence, becoming part of the Kingdom of Wessex, to create the Kingdom of England.

St George’s Day One of our highlights every year is the magnificent Medieval festival that celebrates St George’s Day in style; with living history in the Castle, and re-enactments around the grounds, there is lots of hands-on activities for kids to do. Look out for demonstrations of armour and period weapons. In the Castle meet characters from the Medieval Castle Household, discover how the Master Armourer makes chain mail and watch the Lady and her maids go about their business.

Cycling For Everyone Right in the middle of the Castle Grounds situated at the Castle Grounds Activity Centre is Dave Owen Cycles. Here, you will find a bike for all ages and abilities, both adults and children. There are tandems, trikes for people with balance issues and even hand propelled bikes for those less mobile. Tamworth has miles of cycle paths, see an alternative view of Tamworth, away from the main roads and enjoy a family experience in the fresh air in safety. For those cycle owners, there are a number of other services provided, such as cycling proficiency tests and postcode marking as well as a great repair and spare centre. Anniversary Celebrations 65 years of history This year we are celebrating Drayton Manor Park’s 65th anniversary and would love for you to join us with our celebrations over the whole of 2015. Originally opened in 1950 and still owned by the Bryan family today, Drayton Manor Park has become the UK’s favourite family theme park. Epitomising family throughout, the Park has been enjoyed over the 65 years by over 44 million visitors of all ages. Thomas has made many friends and been on many adventures over the years and in 2015, Thomas & Friends is 70 years new! To mark the occasion and celebrate the show’s rich heritage, a top timetable of fun-filled events are set to take place up and down the UK this year. The exciting journey begins in March when Thomas will take over a London railway station for a star-studded 70th birthday party – and it’s set to be the hottest ticket in town. Entertainment will include a first class display of rare Thomas memorabilia, plus a ’70 Years New’ Thomas Timeline mapping out the Thomas story. The very first stop on the Thomas & Friends adventure was when the Reverend Wilbert Awdry originally brought the character to life in The Railway Series of books to entertain his young son Christopher. The next came when the first story was published in 1945, and 70 years later Thomas & Friends are still going strong, feeding and igniting children’s love of trains all over the world. Thomas & Friends is now watched in more than 1.1 billion households in 200 territories and the show has been translated into more than 40 languages. This year promises to be a special one for Thomas & Friends and fans young and old across the globe will be hoping he’ll be going full steam ahead for many more years to come! 2015 is the 80th anniversary of the Reliant Motor car. Reliant was a British car manufacturer and was traditionally based at Tamworth, in Staffordshire. When the Raleigh Bicycle Company decided to discontinue the manufacture of their three-wheeled vehicles in 1934, their Works Manager Mr T. L. Williams and a colleague Mr E. S. Thompson, felt that the days of lightweight three wheelers were far from over. The enterprising pair decided to build their own vehicle in Mr Williams’s back garden at Kettlebrook, Tamworth. And the prototype was licensed in January 1935. The old site of Reliant Motors is now a housing estate. In its prime the company produced over half a million vehicles over a 65 year history starting in 1935. They were selling cars in

seven countries including the Netherlands, India, the UK and the Middle East. Reliant Motors was the second largest car company in the UK holding that position from the 1960s right up until the 1990s. Reliant Motor Company was producing 50 vehicles a week up to 2001. Reliant was well known for producing the Reliant Robin but they made many different three-wheeled models from the Rialto, Ant and Regal, along with a line of small four-wheeled vehicles ranging from the Rebel, Kitten and Fox with Reliant’s range of sports cars.
Famous people who have owned a Reliant vehicle Princess Anne visited the Reliant Motor Company at Tamworth on 15th July 1975 arriving in her own Reliant Scimitar GTE and is greeted by the managing director Ray Wiggin and his wife. HRH then met the Mayor and Mayoress of Tamworth and the Chief Constable of Staffordshire, then she was taken on a tour of the Reliant premises at Two Gates, Kettlebrook and Shenstone.

Adventure Farm At the National Forest Adventure Farm, Staffordshire’s Tourism Experience of the Year, there’s acres of fun for everyone, no matter what the weather. The animal barn is open every day for a programme of animal petting, pony grooming and visits to the hatchery. Outside, the enormous Funfield contains jumping pillows, water splash out and an inflatable assault course. Inside, there’s three levels of the latest in exciting indoor fun adventure play equipment. Getting Around On Foot Tamworth town centre is flat and easy to navigate with dropped kerbs, although there are varying paving surfaces. Whether walking, pushing a pram or using a mobility scooter, you can access all areas with the exception of the pathway to Tamworth Castle. This is a steep incline and may present a difficulty to some people..

Parking There are ample car parks in the town centre and all are just a short walk from the shops and main attractions. All car parks are marked on the town centre map (pages 64-65). Motorists using Tamworth Borough Council’s pay and display car parks can now opt for ‘cashless’ payments by phone. Cashless payments can be made on the ‘Phone and Pay’ smartphone app or by calling a new local number: 01827 234567. Users can also register for the system online at www.phoneandpay.com. Tamworth car parks are free if you display a valid disabled badge. Ankerside car park, normal tariffs apply, except if you are using Shopmobility on Level 5. Parking is Free at Tamworth Retail Park, but there are time restrictions on some car parks. Details listed in each car park.
Disabled Information Shopmobility Situated on Level 5 Ankerside Car Park, Shopmobility lends wheelchairs and scooters to aid access to the town centre. Shopmobility also offers a range of independent living aids for sale and mobility aid maintenance service.
