Architectural Technology Assessment: Prospect and Refuge, Amble Disabled Parking People with mobility impairments who arrive as passengers should be able to alight from a vehicle close to the principal entrance’1 Therefore, my approach would locate the disabled parking right by the entrance of the building. This starts with redesigning the landscape by adding the parking space that leads straight to the entrance from the Port. My design is located in line with the exiting flat Port, therefore this makes it easier to place the disabled parking to the left where it will be 5 metres from the building. Placing two disabled parking slots on the left hand side of the building would be the best approach and this enables me to place a ticket dispending machine, located in a way that allows a person in a wheelchair to reach easily. In addition, there is enough space to put a clearly sign-posted setting down point which is between the disabled parking and the entrance of the building as 1.18 states.2 Each parking bay will have a 1200mm accessibility zone between, and a 1200mm safety zone on the vehicular side of 3 Disabled parking bays will have a firm and level ground as close as feasible to the principal entrance of the building.

Ground Floor
Access for wheelchair users to Main Entrance(s), distance of travel The entrance door will be a minimum of 1000mm wide and will be wide enough to allow unrestricted access to people such as wheelchair users, people carrying luggage and so on.4 People should be able to see other people approaching from the opposite direction, therefore having glass doors that have opaque strips. In addition the glazed entrance doors should be clearly differentiated from the background by the provision of a high-contrast strip at the top on both sides.5 There will be a hazard warning surface such a corduroy at the top and bottom of landing of the main stairs for people with impaired sight. For example my building has a grand staircase that comes down to the ground level creating a stepped access to the building. There will be contrasted coloured handrails to the main part of the step on both sides of the stairs and the running in the middle as the stairs span for 6 metres. The ground level of my building originally has exposed columns that run around the building, therefore, these columns may be coloured differently to avoid children and people with impaired sight or hearing.6 The building will have automated sliding doors at the entrance that are automatically by a motion sensor.7 In addition, the entrance door will have corduroys attached 400 mm gap in front of the first step. Access for wheelchair users within the building The clear manoeuvring space in front of any reception desk or counter is 1200mm deep and 1800mm wide. The lecture door will be a minimum of 1000mm. Internal doors will be manual and these should make sure that there is an unobstructed space of at least 300mm on the pull side of the door between the leading edge of the door.8 Diagram 9 shows effective clear width and visibility of doors. In terms of the lift, there should be an obstructed manoeuvring space of 1500mm x 1500mm9. A lift size (1800mm wide by 1400mm deep) will be able to accommodate a wheelchair user, with other people and allows them to turn through 180 degrees.10 It will also have a clear landing of 1500mm in front to allow wheelchair users to have 180 degree,11 of turning around, the width of the corridors will be 1800mm. The corridor on the ground floor serves a WC, and a lift, therefore, the corridor will have a width of 800mm12.There should be handrails on both sides of the stairs

This building will need a minimum of two escape routes. Therefore, there will be an escape route from the ground and the upper floor. The staircase that leads to the first floor allows for two wheelchair users with a width wider than 900mm x 1400mm to remain without disrupting the escape flow. Fire alarms and fire extinguishers will be placed all around the building as a precautionary measure. The total occupancy of building is 303. The building already has a staircase that wraps around the building and is already fire proof. As a result of this, this building needs a minimum of 2 escape routes (page 35 table 3. W= (P+ 15n -15)/ (150 + 50n).
Any other relevant factors you wish to highlight, i.e. visual or hearing impairment In the lecture venue, disabled people will have a choice of seats near both entrances to avoid segregation.13 Diagram 3 that shows disabled seats are provided in pairs, with standard seating on at least one side.14 In addition, the minimum clear space provided for access is 900mm. For the toilets, the door when open, doesn’t obstruct15 However, since the toilets in the building will be the only facilities, this means that the width should be at least 2m.16 In addition it is important that at least on WC cubicle that is enlarged for extra space is provided in a unisex toilet. 17 One has to be located as close as possible the entrance/ lobby area. The swing of any opening doors should be 450mm diameter.18 Means of Escape
