Semester 10 | Design Dissertation Site : Wadala, Mumbai Guide : Jude D’souza (JDAP)
Mumbai, like many other globalising cities in the North and South, experienced a number of additional dramatic developments in the 1990s as a result of globalisation processes. Mumbai had first developed as an industrial city through the growth and expansion of the cotton textile industry from the late nineteenth century to the nineteen forties. The industrialization phase had an enormous impact on population growth. The industries in the city became a magnet for employment opportunities, which attracted ruralurban migrants from several locations. The effects of this industrial
restructuring on urban space in Mumbai has been detrimental. The decline and closure of factories and manufacturing units have resulted in dereliction in former industrial areas, the largescale displacement of working-class and labouring communities once employed in these industries. The primary focus of the design would be to discover strategies to activate the site in such a manner that natural resources are utilised rather than exploited. The metallic structures are the only remaining evidence of what
were once the warehouses. The warehouses should be opened, reorganized, and reconnected. These assets should be protected and included in the design strategy. The intent is to revitalize a warehouse district that remains mostly underused after the port activities have declined in Mumbai city since the 1980s. The intervention will largely act as a cultural, technology hub, preserving the existing activities and stakeholders on-site intact, as well as bringing in new forms of attention and economic opportunities by providing new forms of employment.

The restoration of a deteriorated and underutilized industrial area has become evident as a necessary step in capturing and promoting the place’s character or image. It provides new employment, public space, and experimental chances for those involved with the industry sector, as well as inhabitants of the neighbourhood and city dwellers. Even while some components of the building are necessary for maintaining the industrial space’s character, the inclusion of new interventions to improve communal features of the city may have a significant influence on the revival of an underutilised, degraded industrial area.

The secondary focus would be to utilize the underused space by giving people a chance to occupy private spaces within the larger collective community. This creates a collaborative environment where good ideas come to grow. New community groups and local businesses can help encourage the revitalization. Few structures would act as spaces that exhibit the old metallic structures of the decayed warehouses through adaptive reuse where some portion of it will be used with a different program and will have an insert or plug-in structure which will provide program diversity and enhance the experience of the site.

If fact, not all lots in a warehouse district are adaptable, and in some situations, a district may include a large number of lots that are vacant or barely used. The installation of new structures that represent the district's qualities may be one of the first steps toward a successful regeneration in these circumstances. Increased programme diversity and livability are possibly two of the most crucial aspects of a successful revival. These features provide the place with a sense of purpose and function, and they are essential for long-term economic viability.

02 Sanctum for the Displaced rehabilitation & resettlement in lallubhai compound Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture & Environmental Studies Semester 9 | Bridge Studio Site : Lallubhai Compund, Mankhurd, Mumbai Guide : Kalpit Ashar & Mayuri Sisodia (Made in Mumbai)
The Government constructs tenements to relocate and rehabilitate slum dwellers that are being displaced due to the urban infrastructure and transport projects of the state. The state has adopted an interesting model to undertake this resettlement. A private builder is involved in building these tenements of 25 sq m each. The builder is to give these tenements free of cost to the state. In return the builder gets transferable development rights which could be used in other parts of the city. The problem however is that the rehabilitation sites are on the outskirts of the city where the slum dwellers are
made to move to. These places do not provide opportunities for people to work. These schemes have so far proved to be not very popular with slum communities.
dwellers. The colony has a total of 65 7storey and 5-storey buildings with more than 9,300 residential tenements, with activists calling it a “vertical slum”.
Lallubhai Compound is a residential colony in suburban Mankhurd, Mumbai. The residential colony is a cluster of 65 buildings, was created under the Slum Rehabilitation Act (SRA), with construction work completed in 2003. Lallubhai Compound houses people who lived near the Chembur, PD Mello road (CST), Matunga and Kurla railway stations, as well as slum and pavement EXISTING SITE AXONOMETRIC

03 Sancta Maria International School Perkins Eastman Site : Hyderabad, India Practice Area : Primary & Secondary Education
A campus immersed in Nature Sancta Maria International School is in the city of Hyderabad located in the South of India. This innovative 500,000 sf school on a 15 Acres site brings together 2200 students from grades pre-K through 12. For over three decades now, the Saint Mary’s Educational Society has consciously spread its wings across the State of Telangana to ensure that quality education is available across a diverse age group. The design represents school’s vision of a campus that supports innovation, high technology with cross-disciplinary interaction, student well-being along
with excellence in learning. The master plan takes into consideration outdoor learning spaces, courtyards and playing fields for both educational and recreational purposes along with the possibilities of future expansion. The "heart" of the school is the Central Oasis that serves as the focal point for various activities, interactions, and functions. It also holds a symbolic value for the institution through its elliptical form that emulates the form of the buildings in the school’s old campus. The school is in close proximity to the Hyderabad
International Airport posing challenges of excessive noise and height restrictions. The stringent height constraints were taken to advantage by designing low rise buildings to create a more human scaled environment with access to plenty of natural daylighting and ventilation while fostering a sense of community and connection among students.
1. The Central Oasis with open amphitheater forms the heart of the academic campus. The buildings formally and programmatically respond to this elliptical plaza to create a sense of place on the campus. 2. The open in between spaces in campus have been landscaped carefully to define the movement throughout the campus with all paths leading to the central oasis.

04 Isprava Alexander 34K Perkins Eastman Site : Goa, India Practice Area : Luxury Villa Development
The site for Isprava Alexander 34 K sits on a slope that looks out to the Chapora River to the West in the presence of lush native trees. The luxury residential units are nestled in this environment that provides a breath of fresh air as one walks around. The development follows the natural contours as they step down towards the west and avoiding houses on either side of the approach road looking into each other. Special attention has been taken to maintain the site grade in its natural form as much as possible with minimum cut and fill such that the natural slope allows easy discharge of rainwater.
Architectural design of the homes is inspired by traditional Goan Portuguese architectural style and giving the homes a presence as if the houses have always been a part of this landscape. The planning of all units is simple geometrical volumes that are organized around lush green landscapes and courtyards and provides best views of the river to the more social spaces such as the living and dining areas, the semi covered sit out areas, the pool and master bedrooms. Each unit has a separate service entry for staff to enter and exit without using the main entry of the
house. It has been our priority while designing to make sure the pool gets maximum privacy from the neighbors and road. The homes are designed to be naturally lit and well ventilated, and considering the hot and humid climate of Goa care has been taken to also minimize solar heat gain into the semi covered and non-air-conditioned areas of the homes. Every corner of the home is designed to provide thermal comfort in the harshest of the summers.

Villas
The vaddo houses are identified into 6 different typologies to create a sense of randomness that it evident in nature. Each typology has a slight variation in area, program, design elements with the underlying concept of the local Goan architectural expression. The two major underlying themes which define the homes are the double bar scheme and the L bar scheme. The parallel bar scheme is designed with two bars of rooms stuck to each other while one enters at the junction of the two. One bar has all the common functions such as living, dining, kitchen and the second bar is dedicated for the bedrooms.
VADDO 8 AXONOMETRIC Pg 9
The facades of the homes are flanked with architectural features from the Goan Portuguese vocabulary in an incremental order from Vaddos to Villas to Estates. While the Vaddos have subtle architectural features like rectangular windows with borders, Villas have with simple arches and stone screens and estates are flanked by much more decorative arches and richer architectural features. The intent of designing architectural aesthetic is to create a series of homes that feel like they belong to a single clustered development with differences between the homes using simple materials like stucco plaster, Mangalore tiles and wood.
Modularity of Elements The windows of the homes are simple yet extravagant. With the use of traditional wooden frames and shutters. The ground floor openings and windows are rectangular which complement the windows shades while the first-floor openings and windows are arched. TANAY KAPADIA | PORTFOLIO OF WORK
