Tanglin Trust School

Senior Co-curriculum - Term 1

2024/2025

Drama, Music, Art & Design, and Sport

The co-curriculum is a central part of every student’s journey through Tanglin, not only in supporting them in their academic learning and pastoral wellbeing, but also in equipping them with passions and interests that will provide them with deep joy. It is a means through which we can open more doors to a student, and offer opportunities that allow a variety of skills, pursuits, and pleasures to remain parts of their lives beyond school.

The team skills and physical confidence that can be learned in Sport; the ability to express oneself and the discipline that can be arrived at in Music; the creativity that can be explored in Art; the ability to absorb different perspectives and recast them that can be acquired through debating; the curiosity that new knowledge fostered through societies can inspire –employers sometimes call these soft skills, but ultimately, they are life skills And beyond these benefits, there is the inherent pleasure of immersing oneself in a range of pursuits; there is a value in simply doing and enjoying.

While we can provide students with the best possible start to their future careers, we can also nurture them to feel happy and fulfilled as individuals long beyond their time at school; that is the “success” the co-curriculum supports.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award is a renowned and internationally-recognised programme that empowers young individuals to challenge themselves, discover their potential, and contribute to their communities. Founded by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, this award offers a unique framework for personal development and selfimprovement. Participants of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award engage in a variety of activities of their choosing across four key areas: voluntary service, physical recreation, skill development, and the adventurous journey. By volunteering, they learn the importance of giving back and making a positive impact on society. Through physical recreation, they prioritize their health and well-being while fostering discipline and perseverance. Skills development encourages them to explore their interests and talents, whether it be learning an instrument, mastering a new language, or honing their artistic abilities. Lastly, participants embark on adventurous journeys, which challenge them both mentally and physically, fostering resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. At Tanglin, we will develop their outdoor education skills and provide opportunities to practice the adventurous journey section of the award. We will also be using the time in school to make sure students are on top of their administrative tasks that the Duke of Edinburgh award requires. Any students interested should watch out for more information from Mrs Lott later in the year, or contact her for more information. You can also visit DofE website at https://www.dofe.org/.
