Prospectus British-based learning with an international perspective

Founded in 1925 by Anne Griffith-Jones, in the grounds of The Tanglin Club, to provide high quality British education to children of expatriate families.

Tanglin moves to existing campus at Portsdown Road in 1981.

Traditionally Tanglin was a primary school, however in 1996 we started to accept students in the new Senior School, starting with years 7 and 8.

In 2001, with new and expanded facilities, we welcomed the first cohort of Sixth Form students. They graduated in 2003 with flying colours.

Introduction of the International Baccalaureate, alongside A Levels, creating a dual pathway for students.

Tanglin is inspected every year within the British Schools Overseas (BSO) framework, recognised by Ofsted. All three schools awarded ‘Outstanding’, the highest possible grade.

Infant School The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 2 For students aged 3 to 7 Stimulating Environment

“The curriculum is innovative and personalised and the children here are confident, independent, open minded, global young citizens who display a real hunger for learning. Year 2 teacher

The Infant School is committed to ensuring that our children embark on their learning journey in an environment that provides stimulating and exciting experiences, and where the strong pastoral ethos helps the children feel safe, secure and happy to learn. Although a large school, we have well-established systems in place for welcoming and supporting children to settle in to their new learning environment. We value each child as a an individual and work hard to nurture their personal strengths and interests.

Love of Learning We lay the strongest foundations for the total development of each individual through a nurturing and child-centred approach. We cultivate a love of learning across a broad and balanced curriculum, where an enchantment with books, language and self-expression, as well as a genuine interest in numerical concepts and the world around them, is encouraged. This is achieved through creative and integrated learning experiences in a stimulating environment where children feel valued, confident and independent. All this is underpinned by our commitment to supporting every child’s social, emotional, spiritual and cultural awareness.

Inspiring Curriculum The Infant School has actively developed a curriculum that we hope not only inspires but excites the children and the teachers. Whilst we hold true to the overarching principles of the English National

Curriculum, which provides a framework for our key teaching and learning intentions, we firmly believe that equipping our young 21st century learners with the relevant skills and knowledge to help them move forward into the unknown is our primary duty as teachers.

Cross-curricular Learning As children progress from Nursery to Reception and subsequently through Years 1 and 2, emphasis is placed on the further acquisition of skills and understanding in literacy and numeracy. Cross-curricular links are made, where appropriate, to make the learning meaningful and relevant. A wealth of special days, events and outdoor education trips extend and enhance the classroom activities, and often act as a catalyst for new learning. Teaching strategies are varied according to the purpose of a task and personalised to reflect the needs of each child. In our Infant School, we creatively nurture each individual and our teaching reflects our belief that happy and confident children learn most effectively.

Infant Leaders The Infant children are given a number of opportunities to be active members of the school community. From representing their class on the School Council and being a Tech Leader to being Eco or Sun Monitors and Playtime Friendship Buddies, they are encouraged to develop early leadership skills which will be nurtured further as they journey on into the Junior School.

Junior School

Junior School Key Stage 2 Years 3 to 6 For students aged 7 to 11 Broad and Balanced Curriculum Tanglin’s Junior School provides a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires, motivates and challenges children in their learning. The Junior School’s engaging learning environment facilitates a holistic approach that provides children with a wide range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom that promote their personal, academic, creative and physical development. Our creative and integrated curriculum is underpinned by a structured approach to teaching the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, the Humanities, Chinese and PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education), and a commitment to high standards. Alongside academic skills and knowledge, our key drivers of self awareness and personal development, and global awareness and sense of community, lead to an overall focus on our students becoming well-rounded, community spirited and responsible, international young citizens.

Standards and Breadth The Junior School is an accredited member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools and children are well prepared for their Senior School education. While standards are benchmarked against the very best in the UK, our curriculum reflects our international setting and celebrates diversity. We are particularly proud of the breadth of our provision and the many opportunities for children to achieve. Outstanding specialist teaching compliments our impressive facilities

with sport, art, music and drama featuring prominently.

Building Group Identity We understand the value young people place on group membership. We ensure students are well-integrated into their classes and encouraged to be part of a wide group of friends. Each Junior student is also warmly welcomed into a House and special House Days feature innovative team building activities. To promote year group identity, students experience learning in large shared spaces that are imaginatively transformed each term into a range of settings to enrich learning.

Personal and Social Responsibility Opportunities abound in the Junior School to build leadership skills as well as an appreciation of the many cultures that co-exist in Singapore. Junior students act as buddies to Infant students and can participate in the Student Council or become a Library Monitor, Junior Listener, Maths Mentor or Computer Champion. Themed assemblies celebrate cultural festivals, which reinforce the importance of self-management and personal and social responsibility.

Love of Learning We aim to provide memorable experiences that foster a real love of learning and personal development. In addition to an exciting range of theme days and visitors, children from each year group participate in a residential visit. From camping at the Singapore Zoo to exploring the jungles of Borneo, Junior School children learn to contribute with confidence to our world.

“The children are constantly learning in highly engaging lessons that are planned around cross-curricular themes. With so many experienced and dynamic teachers, broad curriculum, creative learning strategies and shared work areas; the school is always buzzing with enthusiastic children involved in collaborative and exciting activities.” Year 5 teacher

Senior School

Senior House Day

Senior School Key Stages 3 and 4 Years 7 to 11 For students aged 11 to 16 Progressive Learning Environment Tanglin’s Senior School provides a progressive, student-led learning environment where each student has the opportunity to discover and develop their unique identity, talents and interests. Our committed teachers ensure that every student is given the guidance and encouragement to achieve to the very best of their ability. We are fortunate to enjoy a well-established ethos of valuing academic success and are proud of the consistently outstanding results achieved by our students. Equally important, however, is that we develop in our students the skills to be life-long learners, to make a meaningful contribution to the community and to lead rewarding and happy lives.

Challenging Curriculum Whilst the Senior School curriculum encompasses most of the elements of the English National Curriculum, we have enriched it to reflect the needs and circumstances of our students and our international context. Our coherent and challenging curriculum is key to the alignment of mission, learning targets, pedagogy and assessment. Five skill areas underpin learning and create alignment with the outcomes and skills required in subsequent years in the school; research skills, social skills, communication skills, thinking skills and self-management skills. These skills not only reflect our aim to empower students and teachers in a culture that prioritises curiosity, humility and community, but are also the values inherent within the Tanglin Learner Profile.

Supportive Relationships A key ingredient in the Senior School’s success is the outstanding quality of

relationships that exist between students and staff and among the students themselves. At the heart of the school is our regard for the needs of individual students and the determination to meet those needs. Through on-going relationships with form tutors and the close personal attention given to students by specialist staff, our knowledge of each student’s abilities and aptitudes is exceptional and enables us to provide personalised academic and pastoral support to ensure students’ high levels of achievement.

Expanding Horizons Senior students also have many opportunities to take part in a broad range of sporting and arts related cocurricular activities and can participate in outdoor education excursions to destinations such as Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand, which further expand their personal horizons. Drawing on the international nature of the school’s population, our Seniors are culturally adept. They take their global citizenship responsibilities seriously and are involved in a range of charitable projects throughout Asia.

Curiosity, Humility, Community In the Senior School, we strive to create a culture where curiosity is nurtured and where student success is driven by a sense of genuine engagement with learning. It is important to us that our students have a sense of humility through exposure to a diversity of human experience leading them to want to make a difference, to act creatively and to think critically. We aim for every individual to be respected, known and cared for within our community.

“Tanglin is an institution with serious educational ideals, and phenomenal teachers. The personal care and attention received by the students here is outstanding. Everyone wants to be involved with any initiative or working group that is proposed. Any request for help, be it a revision class for Year 11, a scientific magic show for Year 1, help with the Year 4 Science Day or an activity for the school-wide Our World Day, is met with a bevy of volunteers.” Senior School teacher

Sixth Form Key Stage 5 Years 12 to 13 For students aged 16 to 18 IB and A Level Pathways

“The school’s drive towards being mission driven, espousing the values of the Tanglin Learner Profile and developing holistic education beyond simply examination results and curriculum attainment means you feel like you are really making a difference.” Sixth Form teacher

Tanglin is unique amongst international schools in Singapore in offering both A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Sixth Form, both of which yield consistently outstanding academic results to complement our excellent results at I/GCSE. We believe the choice of a dual pathway at Sixth Form gives rise to a richer, more diverse education for everyone and we take great care to ensure that students and parents understand the difference between the two courses.

Those opportunities may be in service learning or an in-depth study of a chosen academic field through the independent research task of the Extended Project or the Extended Essay. They may be in leadership through sport, the House system or by being a Pastoral, Duty or Faculty Prefect, or even a member of the Head Team. The TTS Foundation offers financial support for students who wish to undertake projects that will enrich their understanding of the world and their place in it.

Deciding which Sixth Form pathway to follow is a detailed process, which starts as early as Year 9 when teachers start to discuss student attributes, potential career paths and further education options. Scrutinising the different appeal of both pathways becomes more intensive from the start of Year 11. In helping students make the decision about which pathway to follow, Tanglin teachers take on a mixed role, which encompasses being a tutor, mentor, counsellor and careers advisor for students and parents too.

We take great pride in being a dynamic learning environment and strongly encourage our Sixth Formers to have a voice within the school. Others within the school see them as role models and look to them for leadership and to embody ‘curiosity, humility and community’, the values that are at the heart of the Senior School and, in particular, the Sixth Form.

Embracing Opportunities Sixth Form at Tanglin is about much more than just academic study. These two years give students a chance to grow and to embrace a whole range of new opportunities before they move on to the next stage of their life. It is also a chance to consolidate and build friendships, some of which may endure for the rest of their lives, and to develop the skills and values that will form the foundation of their character.

Role Models

We encourage our Sixth Formers to make the most of everything on offer, to be inspired, confident and well-prepared for the demanding world outside. Above all, we want them to enjoy their time here. Two years will pass very quickly and it is important that our students look back with fond memories and no regrets!

Careers and University Tanglin has an excellent academic reputation and our impressive results enable graduates to enter their universities of choice in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge, as well as other leading institutions around the world. Development of the Whole Child

Sport

At Tanglin, we hold a strong belief in the value of learning outside the classroom. The development of the child as a whole is paramount and we recognise that different students are motivated by different experiences. As students progress through Tanglin, they are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities that are on offer from the arts, sports and co-curricular activities to Tanglin’s extensive outdoor education programme.

Sport is an integral part of the Tanglin curriculum. Our goal is to involve, excite and motivate our students to participate in sport. We offer a vibrant, exciting programme from Nursery through to Year 13. We are fortunate to have excellent sporting facilities, which enable us to provide a wide range of competitive and non-competitive events throughout the year. We encourage maximum participation, individual aspiration, squad achievement and personal excellence.

Co-Curricular Activities

Athletics, basketball, swimming, football, rugby, netball, tennis, gymnastics, badminton, cricket, golf, t-ball, softball and volleyball are all established activities that have well-developed training programmes in place and offer participants the opportunity to compete in inter-school events, both in Singapore as well as overseas.

Students can further extend their interests through a wide range of co-curricular activities (CCAs), which take place after school hours and which include everything from MasterChef and hip hop dancing to a range of sport and music options - there is truly something for everyone. Tanglin’s CCA programme aims to deliver enjoyment, challenge, progression and breadth of experience to our students. It provides children with opportunities to pursue a range of interests by developing existing talents or learning something new. In addition to recreational choices, the CCA programme enables children to trial for and engage in competitive activities. It enhances the development of the students’ independence by encouraging them to make choices and organise their time, as well as teaching important lessons associated with trying out for selective sports squads or music ensembles.

Tanglin has a sustained commitment to the ACSIS (Athletic Conference Singapore International Schools) sporting structure, which underpins our continued involvement in overseas sports. This is further supported through participation in SEASAC (South East Asia Student Activity Conference) and FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia), as well as sporting tours to the Middle East and Australia.

Beyond the Classroom

The Arts

Our Libraries

Tanglin also has a thriving, vibrant and energetic Arts programme which plays an important part in school life. There are many opportunities for students to experience music, theatre, dance and art to facilitate creative, social and intellectual development. Throughout the year, there are numerous high-quality ensembles, recitals, performances and exhibitions.

Tanglin is fortunate to have four wellresourced libraries on campus, one for each of the Infant, Junior and Senior Schools and a professional development library for staff. Our libraries are well stocked and equipped with all the latest in online and multimedia learning services (and of course books). Talented and dedicated staff are on hand to offer advice and to encourage a love of reading.

Our exceptional facilities include several performance halls, fully equipped drama and dance studios, a film studio, a fabulous art department and a state-ofthe-art music department which includes practice rooms, a music IT suite, a main rehearsal space for larger groups and a professional recording and performance studio. Tanglin also participates in many regional events involving the Arts.

The libraries also serve an important community function within the school; offering a place for parents to read with younger children and also an extensive resource from which parents and other members of the community can borrow. There is also an active programme of visiting professionals including authors, artists and drama groups in all three schools.

"It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic about the collaboration with Scottish Opera. The productions were absolutely firstclass. What a unique opportunity for all the children to learn about the different aspects of a large-scale production and an amazing experience for them to work alongside dedicated and passionate professional singers." Parent

Communicators They develop confidence in different modes of communication and value second language acquisition. They work sensitively and effectively in collaboration with others.

Outdoor Education Designed to develop the whole person, our extensive outdoor education programmes promote a holistic approach to learning and decision-making, whilst allowing students time for reflection on how choices and values influence others and the environment. Balanced, relevant and thought-provoking, our programmes vary in focus and length, increasing in the level of challenge as students move through the school. Even our youngest children in the Infant School partake in off site excursions, visiting the market in Chinatown, studying the local shophouse architecture or learning about animal life at the Singapore Zoo. As they get older, students embark on residential trips to nearby South East Asian destinations such as a night on a nearby island or in a traditional longhouse in Sarawak. Our oldest students get involved in a broad variety

Year 11
New Zealand of projects, many of which are charity based. Senior trips might include teaching oral healthcare to children in a remote part of Northern India or building houses in Cambodia. In addition to year group programmes, there is also an outstanding range of faculty and optional discovery programmes including skiing in Switzerland, an adventure week in Western Australia, studying art in Bali, brushing up language skills in Argentina and even a chance to climb to Everest Base Camp! Above all, our outdoor education programmes aim to give our students a sense of independence, resilience and responsibility.

Our World

At Tanglin, understanding our place in the world is considered part of the learning experience. We believe in the children in our care and the greatness they can achieve. In the words of one of our Senior students: “There are so many things to do at Tanglin that you can discover yourself. Tanglin teaches you to be your own person.” Social responsibility at Tanglin is defined by ‘Our World’, an overarching term that is used to bring together the school’s focus on local, regional and global perspectives in the curriculum, environmental awareness, cultural visits, overseas trips, fundraising, service projects and the personal development of students. Our World builds on our mission statement and in particular focuses on its closing phrase, “to produce a community of lifelong learners who can contribute with confidence to our world.” Students are given the opportunity to learn about the wider community both in Singapore and beyond, empowering them to enter the world as responsible global citizens who can make a positive difference. Through Ch@t (Charities @ Tanglin), all students are encouraged to look beyond their normal sphere of experience and to take an active and meaningful role in supporting charitable organisations and causes in Singapore and globally. Tanglin’s extensive outdoor education programme is designed to develop the whole person, to help bring a subject

to life and to provide an opportunity for students to reflect on our world. The service strand of CAS (Creativity Action Service) provides further opportunities for Senior students to engage with the local community, including working with Genesis School for Special Education in Singapore and Beyond Social Services, an initiative which supports local school children in a local housing estate in Tiong Bahru. Many initiatives and relationships are long-standing, such as on-going projects with i-India and Lamdon School in Ladakh, whilst others respond to a specific event or crisis in our local, regional or global community. Tanglin also actively encourages teachers to support and engage with projects beyond school such as Caring for Cambodia (CFC). The CFC project is on-going with continuous support and commitment to the development of teacher training in the area. Tanglin is fortunate to have the TTS Foundation which is designed to extend, enrich and engage students through the support of activities and projects beyond the regular curriculum that further enhance their educational experience. TTS Foundation activities include Alumni Grants, Service Awards, Music Awards, grants to Tanglin staff to support them in the delivery of teacher training in the region, bringing visiting authors to the school and supporting community events.
