With a mission to provide safety footwear with a high standard of quality and exceptional delivery capability at good prices, RUNNEX® entered the arena of workplace safety in 2005. Today, the brand takes safety footwear to a new level.
OUR MILESTONES
Smart development
The concept of a safety shoe has changed in the last two decades. Where previously, mainly black leather shoes and heavy steel toecaps shaped the image of building sites and warehouses, the range of variants has increased in terms of shape, colour and function. “Today, people want to be not only safe in their working environments but also modern and stylishly dressed,” says RUNNEX® managing director Malte Kuhring. Sportiness, ergonomics and visual appearance have gained importance, alongside the safety aspects.
“We keep a close eye on market developments, visit trade fairs and seek out trends. For example, a few years ago, safety footwear in a trekking style was extremely fashionable. We are able to quickly adapt to these types of trends and implement them in a customer-oriented manner,” explains RUNNEX® footwear technician and product manager Lothar Merk. “Our models in the LightStar and TeamStar series with a treaded sole and a pleasant breathability were thus able to fulfil the wishes and requirements of many customers.” This is another reason why RUNNEX® relies on a wide range of products. A challenge which RUNNEX® is able to master thanks to the in-house development department.

For example, the range includes shoes in extra-large sizes or with a special fit for women’s feet. “For our customers, we always have an optimal solution to hand,” promises Lothar Merk.
RUNNEX® thus sees itself above all as a manufacturer which adapts the development of its shoes specially for the requirements of particular fields. “The FlexStar series was consciously aimed for use in industry, i.e. on hard concrete floors,” points out the experienced designer. In the next shoe generation, the FlexStars will already be able to be worn with an integrated RUNNEX® activeBumper sole. The material which is used here has already become established in the sports shoes sector.
RUNNEX® safety footwear is not only marked by its continuing development. The long-term partners and established processes also represent significant key success factors. Sustainable packaging
RUNNEX® has reworked its shoeboxes and made them fit for the future. For us, fit for the future means sustainable and functional
The RUNNEX® cardboard packaging is made of FSC-certified recycling material and does not require the use of adhesive. The cardboard is folded and interlocked together and printed on with a minimal quantity of ink. This means there is no pollution for humans or the environment and the raw material of the cardboard is preserved, all while using the lowest possible amounts of resources such as energy and water.
Here, BIG is making another important GREENSTEP towards sustainability.

The selected models are fitted with the activeFit insole MID (width 11) as standard. Those with wide or slim feet can order these models in WIDE (width 12) or SLIM (width 10) for even more tailored comfort

No way through for sharp and pointed objects. The metal-free protection fabric which is made of lightweight HT ceramic material combines ergonomics and comfort to create a unique safety concept. Our footwear offers puncture resistance over the entire area of the outsoles coupled with significantly less weight and more flexibility.

Classification of safety footwear according to DIN EN ISO 20345:2022
DIN EN ISO 20345:2022
Footwear with protective features to protect the wearer from injuries that may occur in the event of an accident. Safety footwear for commercial use must be tested in accordance with EN ISO 20345. Safety footwear are shoes in accordance with EN ISO 20345, equipped with protective toe caps offering resistance to high impacts and the protective effect of which is tested with a test energy of 200 joules and against pressure with a compressive load of at least 15 kN. Abbreviations: S
DIN EN ISO 20345 was revised in 2022 to take account of the latest technical developments and the needs of users. The most important changes are:
• There are two new protection classes. Categories S6 and S7 have been added and characterise waterproof footwear (e.g. with a membrane).
• The marking of slip resistance has been changed and the test methods adapted. It is now a basic requirement and the previous marking using SRA, SRB and SRC no longer applies.
• Resistance to oil and petrol is no longer a basic requirement. If it is tested for, this must be indicated by marking the shoe with “FO”.
• The term “puncture resistance” has been replaced by the term “resistance to puncture”. New tests and symbols have been added to the marking of safety footwear.
• New, optional additional requirements have been introduced: overcap abrasion (SC), slip resistance (SR) and grip on ladders (LG). The additional requirement WRU has been renamed WPA.
Existing certificates remain valid and do not need to be renewed before their expiry date. This means that some of the shoes in this catalogue are certified according to the old standard and some according to the new standard.

In protection classes S1P and S3, both metal-free puncture protection and a puncture-resistant steel midsole are used. Both midsoles fulfil the requirements for puncture resistance in accordance with EN ISO 20345. A test with a 3.0 mm (S) nail was added. The previous requirement involving the 4.5 mm (L) nail remains included. Shoes must be marked according to the material used (e.g. S1PS, S3L, S3S). S3 now only stands for shoes with steel soles.
For higher requirements for puncture resistance, e.g. in the construction industry, we recommend the use of S3 safety shoes with steel midsoles.
ESD shoes according to EN 61340
ESD shoes reliably prevent the wearer from becoming electrically charged. This prevents discharge (electrostatic discharge: ESD) which may cause damage in sensitive workplaces in laboratories, the electronics industry or research institutes.

Slip resistance is now a basic requirement and no longer needs to be marked on the shoe.
As an additional requirement, the safety shoes can be tested on a tile with glycerine and marked with “SR”.
Shoes that cannot be tested, e.g. metal spikes, are marked with the symbol “Ø”.

Sympatex® – the high-performance membrane technology which combines waterproof shoes with breathability, in order to maximise wearing comfort for outdoor activities.
WATERPROOFNESS: In working environments where moisture plays a role, for example outside or in damp environments, Sympatex® provides a waterproof barrier. This protects the wearer’s feet from water, mud or other liquids.
The Sympatex® membrane has a water column of over 45 000 mm. As a comparison: a water column of 2 000 mm represents the highest standard class of DIN EN 343!
WINDPROOFNESS: The Sympatex® membrane is completely windproof according to DIN EN ISO 9237 and ensures that the warming layer of air is not blown away from the body. This is particularly important for work shoes which are worn in cold, windy environments.
PROTECTION FROM EXTERNAL INFLUENCES: Working environments can include various challenges such as cold temperatures, heat or chemicals. Sympatex® also includes protection from these external influences, depending on the specific properties of the materials and designs used. WATERPROOF
BREATHABILITY: In working environments where the feet are under heavy strain and sweat plays a role, breathability is also important. The Sympatex® membrane means that moisture can be transported outwards, which increases wearing comfort and reduces the risk of foot problems stemming from humidity. The hydrophilic molecule chains divert the water vapour outwards. The effect is dynamically intensified by increased differences in temperatures or moisture levels.
DURABILITY AND SAFETY: In work shoes, durability and safety are extremely important. Sympatex® materials are constructed such that they fulfil the requirements for durability and safety which are present in various working environments. The Sympatex® membrane deliberately does not have pores, which could become blocked over time – this means that the membrane’s functionality is preserved for a long time.

In general, any change to a certified safety shoe is not permissible. This also includes the use of the wearer’s own insoles, which would result in the loss of the type approval.
For many of the RUNNEX® models, however, it is possible to add individually made insoles from our partners Orthopädie-Schuhtechnik Kreißl.
The LunaWork insoles have been checked by an accredited testing institute and are certified according to all the specifications of the DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance) Rule 112-191.
The entirety of the protection level thus remains unchanged and fully complies with the required standards for safety in the workplace.

RUNNEX® safety shoes with orthopaedic insoles and adjustments meet the requirements of DGUV Rule 112-191 and are certified for applications pursuant to ÖN-Z1259-2017, variants A and B.
Take your medical certificate and the RUNNEX® safety shoes to the orthopaedic shoemaker/medical supply store of your choice.
