RICHMOND DAY TRIP
LEIGHTON HOUSE & HOLLAND PARK
Sunday 11th August

Saturday 24th August
Tuesday 23rd July
Situated across the road from The Thames, Chelsea Physic Garden is a celebration of the beauty and importance of plants. This walled garden was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries for its apprentices to study the medicinal qualities of plants. It became one of the most important centres of botany and plant exchange in the world.
This marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. Since 2006 there has been a mass gathering in Trafalgar Square. The event features live music, food stalls, exhibitions and displays about Islam. Eid is the Arabic word meaning festivity, while al-Fitr means conclusion of the fast.
The Royal Albert Hall is a great place to see a concert. Anna Caterina Antonacci sings Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, a mini Tristan and Isolde. Tchaikovsky’s fantasy-overture Romeo and Juliet and the bright colours of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony form a strong contrast.
The town was founded following Henry VII's building of Richmond Palace in the 16th century from which the town derives its name. During this era the town and palace were particularly associated with Elizabeth I. During the 18th century Richmond Bridge was completed and many Georgian terraces were built, particularly around Richmond Green and on Richmond Hill.
Leighton House Museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic Lord Leighton. The only purpose-built studio-house open to the public in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the nineteenth century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.
