BOOK: THE HUNGER GAMES AUTHOR: SUZANNE COLLINS The story is written in the voice of 16-year-old girl Katniss Everdeen, who lives in district 12 on the post-war nation of Panem in North America. About seventy-four years of war went on, during which the 13 districts making up the Panem nation rebelled against the oppressive Capitol government. In the wake of the rebellion, the Capitol established the Hunger Games, an annual event in which twenty-four children between the ages of twelve and eighteen, one boy and one girl from each district, are chosen from a lottery and entered into a gladiator like competition, where they must fight each other on live TV to the death until only one remains standing. The main characters are Katiness Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Katniss, District 12's female tribute, a strong-willed teenager. She lives with her little sister Prim and her mother. After her father dies, she hunts to provide for her family. She sees the Hunger Games as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. She promises her sister she will win the games. Peeta, the male tribute for District 12, and the son of the local baker. He is loyal and brave, and will do whatever it takes for Katniss to survive, because he has been in love with her since they were five years old. Peeta is described as being medium height, strongly built and has ashy blonde hair. When Katniss sister Prim who just turned 12 was selected out of the name box to be the female tribute Katniss volunteered to take Prim’s place in order to save her sister. She promises to do her best and win the Hunger Games for her sister. This book fits under the category of Alternate history, Science Adventure Fiction and Speculative fiction.
Katniss changed from being self-reliant person not trusting anyone and doing everything her own way to learning how to pretend to love Peeta and this she did quiet successfully, in order to get sponsors who would help them stay alive in the game by supplying medications etc.
Peeta Mellark is my favorite character because he was smart to come up with the best idea to get sponsors. And also it was cool how he used his mum’s cake decorating skills to camouflage and kept himself alive. Chapter 19 is my favorite, when Peeta camouflaged and stayed alive until Katniss found and saved him. I am happy with the ending of this book, but it also left me thinking that another revolution or uprising against the capitol probably be happening soon. I am looking forward to finding out, when I finish reading the 2 and 3 of the Hunger Games. It is an epic story of survival and letting go, I recommend this book to anyone who likes a book about surviving. Or surviving without the use of most technology. Overall this is one of my favorite books. I would give this book a rating of 8
