Your Nominee Babu M. Patel Clinton, MS (# 46007)
ABOUT BABU PATEL Mr. Babu “Jerry” Patel was born to the Late Motirambhai and Late Gomatben Patel in Kizuka, Tanzania as the youngest of four children. In his early life, his parents owned and operated a general merchandise store to provide for him and his brothers. They sold everything and moved to England to pursue better opportunities for their family when Mr. Patel was still very young. There, after finishing his high school education, Mr. Patel married his wife, Jaya Patel. Following the advice of his eldest brother, they moved to the United States to pursue more opportunities, being the first in the entire family to do so. After a brief stay in California, Mr. Patel and his wife lived in Tampa, Florida for 10 years where they bought their first 22-unit motel and began their own family, having two daughters – Tina and Sarina – and a son, Dev. He then moved to Forest, Mississippi, where their family spent the next 10 years, and began building several franchise hotels with his siblings throughout Mississippi and Alabama. After 43 years of living in the United States, all of his children have married and he now has six grandchildren – Ayden, Sahil, Alyssa, Aryana, Jayden, and Zyan – and is eagerly awaiting a seventh, Zinda. While Mr. Patel has lived all over the United States, he currently resides in Clinton, Mississippi, where he is best known for his philanthropic personality. He has helped raise awareness and money for many charitable organizations such as the new Children’s Hospital and Hope Lodge, and Nora’s Home. Throughout his time in Mississippi, Mr. Patel has developed and managed several franchise hotels (Days Inn, Hampton Inn, and Full-Service Holiday Inn) and is a lifetime member of AAHOA. For the Indian Community specifically, Mr. Patel has assisted with many fundraisers and events – the most notable being the Hindu Temple Society of Mississippi’s Dream Raffle Event. Currently, he is working on a fundraiser called United We Breathe, which is dedicated to providing oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies to areas in need in South Gujarat during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear Committee: This hereby is in reference to Babubhai Patel for his commendable and passionate efforts for raising donations throughout the past few years for the Leuva Patidar Samaj of USA a national community organization which represents all the Leuva’s in the USA. The Leuva Patidar is community of Surat, Navsari, Tapi, Bharuch and Valsad districts of southern part of Gujarat has a history, which goes back to several centuries. These Patidars and their descendants residing all over the world and especially in United States of America are compassionate, hardworking, and very resourceful people. These Patidars are involved in various enterprises including but not limited to Lodging, Engineering, Medicine, Science, and service-related industries in major metropolitan cities as well as small towns of America. In spite of being relocated in this foreign country we have not forgotten our roots, culture and the rich heritage, hence we have been actively involved in local and national organizations which promote cultural, religious, sports, important festivals and other functions. Babubhai was able to raise several hundred thousands of dollars for the nonprofit organization making funds available for the association to better serve the members. Further, throughout the fund raising a portion of the funds were given to the Leuva Patidar Scholarship foundation to help the children in the community for their college financial needs. Babubhai also helped raised the most funds from the State of Mississippi for the URI Attack funds in India to send to help the wives of the lost soldiers. As having the great opportunity to work with Babubhai Patel thru out the years I have come to experience his character and leadership as exemplary. His heart has always been to serve with a passion without expectation from others or personal gain. He instills a true happiness of helping others to make a difference in their lives. Babubhai understands that raising donations is a selfless act and simply feeling good about giving. For him being able to give back to those in need helps achieve a greater sense of personal satisfaction and growth it feels good to help others. His energy level and humble nature is unparalleled. He is a great asset to our community and we are super proud of all the efforts he is doing for various organizations throughout the country. It's my great pleasure to nominate Jerry Babu Patel for the AAHOA Outreach Award for Philanthropy. I write to you from Nora's Home - Houston's Haven for organ transplant patients and their families. In 2015, we were introduced to Babu whom joined our Board of Directors shortly thereafter. I was immediately impressed with his dedication and endorsement of our mission to provide affordable lodging for organ failure patients and their families, in a warm and comfortable home-like environment. Babu embodies all the values that make Nora's Home so very special, and as a nonprofit organization, we rely on the generosity of the community to provide added hope and lodging subsidies for the many families in-need that enter our doors. It is without question that Babu has a tireless ability to engage the community in a powerful, meaningful way. As part of a capital campaign to expand our current facility in 2018, Babu worked relentlessly to solicit AAHOA vendors for furniture, fixtures, equipment, and materials for the upcoming construction project. His petitions garnered attention throughout the association's dynamic community and has led to a successful partnership between AAHOA and Nora's Home - one of which we still proudly refer to today as "The House that AAHOA Built". Nora's Home has also been selected as one of the three charity beneficiaries for the inaugural AAHOA Golf Classic held in April 2021 in Houston. With a heart the size ofTexas, and a unique passion to help those most in-need, Babu is truly a blessing to everyone who has the fortune to know and work with him. I proudly endorse Jerry Babu Patel for this year's MHOA Outreach Award for Philanthropy and thank you to the committee fo r promoting a community and culture of philanthropy. Sincerely,

January 18, 2021 Dear AAHOA Nominating Committee, I am proud to nominate Babubhai Patel for the 2021 Philanthropy Award. Babubhai is a true philanthropist. He puts the service of others and the progress of community ahead of himself. For decades, he has lead efforts around the country to raise funds and awareness for important causes. He actively supports dozens of charities and has literally helped raise Hundreds of Thousands of dollars out of the goodness of his heart. A few years ago, a group of us began a community project called Samaj Saves Lives. We wanted to raise awareness among the Indian community about the importance of organ donation. We also wanted to help the thousands of families waiting for life-saving transplants. I met Babubhai at an LPS convention in Atlanta. We had no prior history. Nonetheless, once he understood the program, he personally helped us register hundreds of new donors and spread our message from stage to the thousands of attendees. He had no vested reason to help. He simply wanted to support a great cause and did it genuinely and passionately. Since meeting a few years ago, he has motivated me to devote even more time to community projects and nonprofits. Like me, he connects with and influences so many people around him to do better work and help others. He is a leader, motivator, instigator and true giver. As such, as a past winner of this award, I proudly and enthusiastically nominate Babubhai Patel for the 2021 Outreach Award for Philanthropy. Respectfully submitted,

Integrity
Respect
Humility
Dear AAHOA Nominating Committee, As we sat and discussed the prestigious Philanthropy Award and the true weight of such an honor, it was unanimous and without hesitation that we each thought of Babubhai Patel as a deserving community leader. Babubhai exhibits a servant heart and has motivated each of us to rise to a level that puts humanity on the top of the priority list. It is with much pride that we have a leader of his caliber that uses his skill set and knowledge for the greater good. We are all guilty of often using work and personal matters as an excuse for not having the time to give back or to do more. Babubhai refused to make excuses and without fail is on the forefront of so many causes and opportunities to give back. Any time there has been a call for action or a need to safeguard and promote the wellbeing of our fellow citizens, your will find Babubhai front and center with those important questions “How can I help” and “What can I do” and once he has and answer, there is action. During Babubhai’s term as Gujrati Samaj of Mississippi President he was able to secure the highest membership. Some very notable accomplishments include raising over $130,000.00 for relief efforts after the earthquake in Gujarat, India; raised over $55,000.00 towards relief efforts after 9/11, has worked closely with public officials (i.e. Governor Ronnie Musgrove, Senator Roger Wicker, etc) to aid in relations between the Samaj and the local/state Government; served as Chief Trustee of the Gujrati Samaj of Mississippi in 2020 and boasted $75,000 profit from directory initiative which now brings the organizations total savings to over $500,000 for a Community Center that Babubhai has also been instrumental in procuring; involved in numerous youth initiatives aimed to share our culture with future generations; organized four raffle projects that has raised in excess of $1.4 million; and lastly instrumental in aiding Dr. Kiran Patel with the creation of the Indian Festival hosted Thanksgiving Weekend in Tampa, Florida for over 32 years now. As a businessman, Babubhai is well aware that his strengths are often in fundraising and calling upon other leaders in our community to join the cause. As a leader he is always successful in both. We have all heard the saying “that in order to discover the meaning of our own lives and find our own happiness with must first lose ourselves in the service of others.” We can all proudly say that with Babubhai leading the way we have all found happiness and humility in our service to our fellow citizens and are grateful for the guidance and motivation from Babubhai that in turn had touched the lives of so many. With kind regards, Gujrati Samaj of Mississippi President Paresh Mansukha Trustee Devendrabhai Patel

It has come to my attention that Mr. Jayantilal Patel has been nominated for the 2021 Philanthropy Award. I am happy to write this letter supporting his nomination. I know Mr. Patel personally. He is with the India Diaspora in Mississippi and helped to initiate the opportunity for me to meet Indian Prime Minister Modi when he visited the United States in 20 I 9. Mr. Patel's involvement with charitable causes is beyond impressive. He has raised vast funds for The Mississippi Food Network, The American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Jackson, MS, and our local Children's Hospital. He is on the board of Nora's Home in Texas and has contributed a great deal of effort to furnishing the facilities there. A few years ago, he helped to start an organization called Samaj Saves Lives which raises awareness of the importance of organ donation among members of the Indian community. He has helped to register hundreds or new donors and has spread the message of this mission to thousands. PERSPECTIVES
AN UNCONVENTIONAL—
but practical—approach to philanthropy by MANOJ BHARGAVA
I
N MY KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT the annual AAHOA Convention last March I spoke about how our duty, as people with wealth, is to help those who have less. I admitted that in my arrogance I thought I knew what those living in the unlucky half of the world needed. But, it wasn’t until I spent time with them that I realized what should have been obvious. Their goals in life are no different from those of anyone else on the planet:
to make a living, care for their families, and have a decent life. Unfortunately billions of people can’t achieve those primary goals because they are missing the fundamentals. They lack reliable electricity. They don’t have clean water for drinking or agriculture. Their farms are unproductive. They have health issues but can’t get treatment. These problems perpetuate the cycle of poverty and act as barriers to opportunity.
2 8 | AUGUST 2018 | TODAYSHOTELIER.COM
Therefore, we need a practical approach to philanthropy. After all, when you meet peoples’ basic needs for energy, water, food, and health, you enable them to pursue everything else, including higher incomes, education, nutrition, wellness, financial security, self-sufficiency, and higher living standards. That’s the idea behind the Billions in Change movement. Billions in Change aims to bring useful inventions and better quality of life to the unlucky half
7-MINUTE READING TIME
of the world. Our main partner in the movement is Stage 2 Innovations, an invention shop in Farmington Hills, Michigan, which develops and manufactures useful products under the HANS™ brand to help solve problems related to energy access and water quality. Other partners in the movement include The Hans Foundation (deploying solutions in India), the Billions in Change Foundation (developing philanthropic partnerships to grow the impact of the movement), and tens of thousands of individual supporters around the world.
DESIGNING USEFUL PRODUCTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD In my speech I mentioned some of the inventions we’ve been working on: The HANS™ PowerPack 300 is a handheld portable power station that contains built-in lights, a USB port, and an outlet for plugging in small electronics, like a radio or fan. The device uses a lithium-ion battery and can be charged with its built-in 4.5-Watt solar panel, by plugging it into a wall socket, or by using the HANS™ Solar BriefCase 60, which is another Stage 2 invention. The HANS™ RainMaker is a water unit for use at the village level that attaches to any type of well – even brackish water wells – and purifies up to 20,000 liters per day. It runs off just 1 kilowatt of power – equal to a hair dryer – and will be priced around 3 lakhs ($4,500). Units will be available for shipping in early-to-late fall 2018. Shivansh Fertilizer is a method of creating free fertilizer from farm waste in just 18 days. Compared to buying expensive chemical fertilizers that ultimately poison the soil, Shivansh fertilizer results in higher yields, healthier produce, lower water requirements, and more income for farmers. Last year we tested it with about 50 farms to see how it worked. Incredibly, it was so successful that within months the technique had spread to 40,000 farms. We’ve developed
instruction materials in various languages and a training program in Delhi.
A CALL TO ACTION The problems we are trying to address are far bigger than any one person can solve. None of us can go at it alone and hope to have much of an impact. However, all of us can play a role. The role we’ve carved out with Stage 2 and Billions in Change is that of toolmaker. We create tools that philanthropists and nonprofits can use to more effectively address issues of poverty, poor health, poor nutrition, dirty water, and lack of electricity. Here are some ways you can get involved: Adopt a village: If you want to help an entire village, you’re not going to fix anything just by sending money. Instead, provide readymade tools that can address the problems directly. For example, Free and reliable electricity from the HANS™ PowerPack enables households to make a better livelihood, gives kids enough light to do their homework after dark, and lets people get on the internet, opening up a world of knowledge and opportunity. Clean water from the HANS™ RainMaker enables good health, which leads to lower costs and higher incomes. After all, 50 percent of hospital beds are occupied by people who are sick from dirty water. Free, nutrient-rich Shivansh fertilizer produces higher yields and better quality produce, increasing income for farmers and enabling better health and higher living standards for families. Buy and donate HANS™ products: Instead of giving cash to the charities you work with, make in-kind donations of HANS™ products that will directly address the issues you care about: education, health, and poverty. Your money won’t be wasted or stolen because you’re giving away something tangible. This funding strategy keeps the NGOs honest.
And, you won’t be lining our pockets because we sell HANS™ products at zero profit. Fund Shivansh fertilizer training: Arrange for farmers to receive Shivansh fertilizer instruction at our training center in Delhi, or fund the travel costs for our trainers to instruct farmers in another region of India or part of the world. Donate to the Billions in Change Foundation: You may believe in the idea of supplying tools to combat global problems, but don’t have on-the-ground partners to make it happen. We can help. If you send funds to the Billions in Change Foundation we will use your money to make both in-kind donations to villages and to subsidize prices for villages or households purchasing the tools.
FINAL THOUGHTS My approach to philanthropy may be unconventional, but it works because we are addressing root causes. If the problem is sickness, we don’t look at medicine; we look at enabling health through clean water. If the problem is poverty, we look at how to improve opportunity for livelihood. If the problem is illiteracy, we look at removing the obstacles to learning. If the problem is infertile land, we look at enabling natural soil processes to improve production. We’ve seen from decades of experience that the conventional method of simply throwing money at a problem never solves it. In fact, it usually makes the problem worse. We know that relying solely on governments for solutions isn’t an option. It’s up to those of us who possess both the financial means to help and the common sense to know how to help. After all, if we don’t do it, then who will? ■ Manoj Bhargava is a self-made billionaire philanthropist whose main aim is to fix the world’s biggest problems in the areas of energy, water, and health. Families settled in various states across America from South Gujarat’s Surat, Navsari, and Navsari Leva Patel communities (Gujarati Samaj of Mississippi, Omkar Satsang Mandal, Astha Charity and Friends of Humanity) have sent 200 oxygen concentrators to Surat Municipal Corporation from “United We Breathe – Humanitarian Aid”. 100 oxygen concentrators will be given to the Sminmer Hospital managed by Surat Municipal Corporation. The Commissioner of Surat Municipal Corporations has been informed to delegate 100 concentrators to Maliba Hospital. Mr. Pankaj Patel is working on sending 250 10-liter and 50 5-liter concentrators to be given to the Surat Municipal Corporation and Maliba Hospital. In service of humanity, (1) Dr. Satis Patel (village Astan) who is living in Houston Texas has chosen the oxygen concentrators under the adequate testing. Through the guidance of mankind, (2) Mr. Babubhai Patel (village Baben) who is living in Jackson Mississippi has done the work of collecting the donations. (3) Mr. Dineshbhai Patel. (4) All of the process and correspondence from the purchase of the machines to delivering them to the Surat Municipal Corporation xxxx
have been done by Mr. Pankaj Patel. (5) Due to the news of the oxygen shortage in India, this group worked towards the goal of not a single person dying due to lack of oxygen, targeting specifically towards the citizens of South Gujarat, by raising generous contributions so that oxygen can be provided to those in need, first in the original village of Syada in the Navsari district. Mr. Champakbhai Patel (now in Dallas) has conversed and received guidance from Commissioner Banchhanidhi Panni of the Surat Municipal Corporation on how to get the help of the children of South Gujarat who are now living in USA during this difficult time of Covid-19. Donations have been appealed. Surat Municipal Corporation has arranged a bus called the “Oxygen Express” so that patients who are currently undergoing oxygen treatment can use the concentrators at their own homes. The patients in need of oxygen will be given an oxygen concentrator by Oxygen Express to use at home if they are recommended by a qualified and approved medical practitioner. This type of patient can call to inquire at 18001238000 or can email at smc.oxygenexpress@gmail.com to fulfill the need of oxygen concentrator.
