Editor’s Letter I’d like to take this fortunate opportunity to introduce all of you to the new magazine ‘Nook’. Nook is a magazine which dwells into the enormous topics of fashion and architecture. We are trying to take every one of you on a journey through the tiny details of these worlds. It is amusing how many times fashion and architecture cross each other’s paths. Architecture has been a source of inspiration for the longest period of time. It has been a great depiction or reflection of so many factors such as culture, time, period, details and intricacies and so much more. As well, we speak about the amalgamation of fashion and architecture. The goal of Nook is to find the perfect balance and functionality in both fields and to create beauty. Through the first, May 2020 issue, we are trying to build a relationship with you and

connect to you. This issue is the foundation and start of Nook, hence it is named ‘The Construct Issue’. In the editorial The Fashion Arch (p. 26), we collaborated with Shrutika Gavhane, an influencer, is wearing garments which are reflecting an architectural movement. And in the article Lines and Stitches (p. 80), it proves that the architectural impact on fashion and culture is huge. The Construct Issue is full of new and exciting content. It has captured the zeitgeist, which has been a difficult time for all of us. Look forward to the next month’s issue ‘The Precise Issue’ which elaborates on intricate embroidery and carvings. Nook hopes you enjoy reading the magazine just as much as we have while piecing it together. I hope all of you are secured and sheltered. Stay home, stay safe.

Creativity Without Limits As all of us know fashion and architecture have been in constant interaction for many years and decades. The connections between these two worlds are quite interesting. The engagement of elements like structure, forms is astonishing. It’s not very shocking that there would be people who have taste for both the worlds.

Pierre Cardin is one of the greatest designers who made this switch. He was interested in fashion as a teenager yet he went on to study architecture in Paris. His inclination towards fashion was so strong that he took a job at the house of Paquin and then moved on to work with Dior. You are able to notice his inspirations from architecture were distinct in his collections. His work exhibited more of geometry than human physique. Pierre Cardin helped in the creation of Christian Dior’s New Look in 1947 and introduced the ‘bubble skirt’ in ‘54. He has a unique ‘Cardin’ style which is geometric and sculptural.

I am an architect who completely reinvents a woman’s body.

-Thierry Mugler.

Thierry Mugler

The founder of the Mugler house is an architect who was pulled towards fashion. You can pick up on his influences from his architectural background in his designs. His garments are maximalist and magnificent. A few iconic designs of Mugler are the Robot Woman and the Venus Dress which was worn by Cardi B recently.

Architecture is how the person places herself in the space. Fashion is about how you place the object on the person.

Both Thierry Mugler and Pierre Cardin have gone back to the world of architecture and to designing buildings.

Zaha Hadid

Following the steps of Thierry Mugler, Casey Cadwallader shares the same story. Casey graduated with a degree of architecture from Cornell. His internship at Marc Jacobs was a turning point in his career. His collections created at the house of Mugler have clear traces of his background in architectural studies at Cornell University and his

Spring 2020 look for Bella Hadid

Zaha Hadid, the Queen of the Curve’, is an outstanding example for merging the two worlds. Her initial major project was the Vitra fire station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Composed of a series of sharply angular planes, the structure resembles a bird on the wing. She is known for fluidity and the sculptural form of architecture.

She has collaborated with several jewellery, bags and footwear brands like Swarovski, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Adidas and many more. In 2008 she created the show-stopping Celeste couture necklace, its sweeping form is reminiscent of a single

brushstroke, dancing along the collarbone and frozen in silver. The similarities that run through her building and accessory designs are remarkable. Her architectural designs usually serve as a direct inspiration for her statement pieces in fashion. Swaroski Celeste Necklace

The Heydar Aliyev Center Virgil Abloh

Almost everyone knows Virgil Abloh as a genius designer who works in Louis Vuitton and is the owner of the brand ‘Off White’. But Abloh has degrees in civil engineering and architecture. His work is extravagant and hints of the hip hop culture. Architecture is an enormous inspiration for fashion. These are a few people who have smartly and skilfully used it for their advantage.

The Fashion Arch The beginning of Art Deco is traced back to 1925 in Paris. Art Deco is a name given to an art and design style which was modern and sleek. Architecture done in Art Deco style is geometric and has a strong vertical emphasis. It is very striking and looks different than the earlier styles. It was meant to create a modern style for the modern age.

Reality: the Illusionist The one goal there is to achieve in interior design, is to make the most of your spaces. Sometimes the interiors you are working on are set and only minor changes and tweaks can change the whole look of the place. But there are times when you need to work more on a space to achieve the optimised result. These are the times when optical illusions come in handy to create change. It is surely possible to modify a space without deconstruction. A space can be visually broadened, heightened, narrowed and lowered by illusions. This can be attained by interior elements like object placement, lighting, colours, use of lines and mirrors because these can have a remarkable impact on the look, proportion, size and the mood of a space. Below we’ve outlined a few decorator’s hacks for a fashion store or a boutique which can easily be achieved. Minimalist fashion store

42 | NOOK- May 2020

Colour is the most important element here. It is not hard to be convinced that a single colour can drastically change the look and the aesthetics of a space or a room and we can easily use this to our advantage. Lighter colours like whites and neutral shades can make a space bigger and broader. Lighter colours are good options to use in tight, small and cramped up retail spaces. Lighter colours also make the garments in the store pop. Be careful even though subdued shades fit perfectly into modern aesthetic, they can make huge stores like grim and empty. Whereas darker shades can make a space look tighter and the walls look more defined. Darker shades aren’t recommended for compact and confined spaces. However, a pop of darker colour would also come to your advantage.

Darker coloured store

The next fundamental thing we need to keep in mind are the fixtures. The fixtures play an important role because without these, a store does not look finished and is not visually appealing. Smaller, thinner and light-weight fixtures especially pieces with defined legs are recommended for compact and smaller stores. This added visual of vacant space will be giving the illusion that the fixtures are not taking up a lot of space and will help open up the space. It is a suggestion to keep fixtures in a slight contrast to the wall colour so that it creates visual layers. Light-weight and contrast coloured fixtures

Well-lit ambience of a store

When it comes to the lighting of a store, it’s not just there to illuminate the space but to also set the mood and atmosphere for the customers and to highlight specific areas. Warm and soft lighting is especial recommended for fitting rooms because it makes a customer look good in the outfit without any unflattering shadows. A customer needs to see what he/ she is buys, so provide ample and sufficient lighting. This improves the chances of a customer purchasing the product. In small stores another problem which can be faced- uncomfortably low ceilings. The recommended lights to fix this problem is by putting up flush mount ceiling light or accent lights.

Focused lights for window display

The other solutions for taller ceiling are full-length curtains, stripped wallpapers, glass facades and hanging high mirrors. Glossy flooring is good element to have in your store. The purpose was having glossy flooring is to bounce light and illuminate the space. Window displays are efficient for a fashion store. Window display is the first thing the customers see. Window displays are the face of the store. They need to be well lit, attractive and eye-catching. Focused lights are recommended for window displays to highlight the products in the window.

Use of a full-length mirror

a light can illuminate your store without using a large number of lights or bulbs. It can also appear the room to look bigger. Mirrors on the side walls makes it an obvious way to make narrow passage, wide. Good amount of mirrors are necessary for a fashion store. Mirrors need to be accessible easily so your customer can see the garment immediately after picking it off the rack. In addition, small mirrors dainty pieces of décor and focal points. These few interior design optical illusions can help people to perceive a retail space better than it actually is and save the day!

Talking of mirrors, there’s no way we can bypass such a key element. It is a great way to fool the eyes. In a fashion store or boutique, a full-length mirror is necessary as the customer need to see the whole outfit before purchasing. Installation of a fulllength mirror is the easiest and the quickest way to make a tight space can make your store look larger. Putting a mirror at the wall opposite to your entrance can create an illusion of greater extent to your store. Mirrors help to add depth and visual height to a room. The property of mirrors reflecting light can be used to our advantage. Placing a mirror near

Post pandemic store experiences will most likely cater to customers on an appointment basis, and brands are now looking to finally get into the era of using robots to perform menial tasks. Articles suggest that trial rooms will no longer exist, say bye to your selfies! Consultancies across the world are consciously looking at improving the manner in which customer experiences are tailored, many brands are looking at technology to solve the problem. What do you do if the customer cannot get to the store? It's simple. You try hard to get the store to the customer. Digital experiences can provide a friendly, personal and an interactive safe space to the customer to explore a brand and their products at their leisure, without disturbances. If brands use technology effectively, they can create experiences that have the potential to totally replace walk in stores. Although unfortunate and disturbing, this pandemic can usher a new era in customer experience. All of us should make a resolve to persevere in this pandemic with trust and faith in our fellow citizens so that this pandemic does not snowball into sheer anarchy and chaos.

Post Pandemic Stores

Post pandemic normalcy is going to put brands in a rather catch 22 kind of situation where they can either revolutionise the way customers are targeted and tailored to an experience unforgettable, or they can fail dismally at it and just shut down due to bankruptcy. - Harsh Joglekar

Sustainable Architecture

Manitoba Hydro Place

Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew

Everyone talks about sustainability in terms of resources, technologies, textiles and fuels. We live in an age where reducing our carbon footprint is a necessity. Any object which is sustainable show ecological awareness. So, what is sustainable architecture? The goal in sustainable architecture is to create buildings which reduces the negative impact on the environment. This can be achieved by using sustainable building materials like recycled metals or reusable materials and appropriate energy efficient technologies. The sustainability of an urban project must be a requirement and not one of the characteristics. Factors like orientation, sunlight and other physical factors need to be taken in consideration while designing a sustainable building. The people who reside in these sustainable buildings have a certain responsibility like to reduce waste and energy. The choice to follow this responsibility is what makes a piece of architecture completely sustainable and environment friendly. The recent movements of architecture like New Urbanism and New Classical Architecture promote a sustainable approach.

Fashion industry takes inspiration for the apparel from the natural world to the manmade world. Architecture has been an inspiration to the world of fashion for quite a few decades. Tiniest detail of a modern building or a historic monument like stained glass or a door or the ceiling could be used as a concept and inspiration for a single garment or a collection. The form, material, geometry, structure, decorations, exteriors can act as spurs. Architecture has the power of influencing the clothing, culture, a way of living in a particular area. Similar forms of style run through both the worlds like Victorian, Gothic, Mughal, Baroque, and more. Northern and central India is flourished with Mughal architecture. When the Mughals ruled over India, an unusual style of architecture was revealed which was a mixture of Islamic, Persian and Indian architecture which was called the Indo-Islamic style. The tomb of the emperor Humayun shows strong influences of this new blended architecture. Buland Darwaja, Agra Fort, Taj Mahal, The Red Fort are some of the finest pieces of Mughal architecture in India. The Mughals were passionate about art, poetry and architecture. They built extensive and lavish forts, palaces and gardens. The wall decorations were intricate due to the inlay work with precious stones and latticed screens.

The Mughal gardens splendid symmetry and had an emphasis on geometry with the aligned rows of flowers, bushes and fountains. Mughal architecture served as a huge inspiration for apparel then and now also. The Mughal dynasty was luxurious, unlike any other dynasty which came to India. The Mughals loved to dress up gracefully. They used to love their glamorous garments and elaborate ornaments. Their clothes were made out of rich fabrics like silk, brocade, velvet and pashmina. The fabrics were lavishly woven with silver and gold threads, which was called zari. The garments were also embellished with valuable and rare stones. They played an important role in increasing the richness of the

Indian costume and textile. The motifs broadly used during this time were natural motifs like flowers, leaves and birds, Indo-Persian geometric motifs and patterns of colours. You can notice that the motifs which were used are seen in both architecture and clothing. The clothing of women and men didn’t differ much. They wore loose clothes like Jama (skirt type garment) with full-length sleeves with a sash on the waist with jewellery expect men wore a turban and women ankle length vests.

The geometric motifs were highly inspired by the monuments and its precise symmetry. The inlay work which is used to decorate the walls plays a huge role by acting as a direct inspiration for motifs like flowers and leaves. Persian motifs

Mughal influences can be seen distinctively in modern fashion especially Indian fashion. We can see it through the materials, embroidery, colours, patterns, silhouettes and motifs. Without even knowing we tend to wear garments inspired by the Mughal architecture. Several designers have been exploring and improvising this Mughal heritage for their gorgeous collections. Tarun Tihiliani’s Chashme Shahi collection is inspired by the ‘Chashme Shahi’ in Srinagar and has a lot of vibrant colours and floral motifs. Designers like Sabyasachi, Anita Dongre and Dhoti Pants have used the floral pattern as an insight for their garments. These Mughal prints and patterns ignite a sense of royalty and luxury. Temple Architecture-South India

Another interesting type of architecture which exists in India is the Temple architecture. It has developed in a several regions and has deep roots in India. South India holds a number of temples with magnificent architecture and construction. India’s Southern Temple architecture has been a direct source of inspiration for the famous Kanjeevaram sarees.

Kanjeevaram sarees are temple sarees from a small town called Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu around 400 years ago. These sarees earn their name because of the quality and craftmanship of the silk used to weave. Kanjeevaram sarees have traditional motifs like buttas (small flowers) and patterns like stripes, checks and temple borders.

Kanjeevaram Saree

The temple borders are inspired by the triangular form of the exteriors of the temple. The sarees vibrantly coloured with contrast borders.

Just like Mughal and Temple architecture had an impression on Indian textiles and apparels, the Victorian architecture movement had a great impact on the styles and garments. Victorian architecture is not just a single style but branches out into different types of architecture like Classic, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Italianate, Romanesque Revival and many more. This type of architecture was manor-like, and consisted of huge balconies, big windows, decorative trims, tiny details, pastel colours and steep roofs. Victorian style house

Industrialization played an important role because the technology developed hence the methods of construction changed in both the provinces. The architecture was dominated by industrialized and commercial buildings. Mass production of buildings began as transportation of materials was easier. This dramatically changed the style of architecture as it started moving away from the traditional ways like rectangular buildings. The fashion industry drastically changed due to industrial revolution. The manufacture of fabrics became faster. Sewing machines were able to manufacture clothes in large numbers. Victorian Era Fashion

Transportation made deliveries of clothes easier. Everything which was desired was available at a cheaper rate. The reasons why people bought clothes also changed. Before industrialization people bought clothes out of necessity and later clothes were bought because people could afford it and because they wanted to keep up with the fashion. The flexibility and variety of style affected both fashion and architecture. Colour palette was a great influence of Victorian architecture on fashion during that era. It consists of pastel colours as well as vibrant colours like blues, greens, purples and yellows. These vibrant colours were synthetic colours and were only possible due to the industrialization. Synthetic dyes made it possible to use

Victorian Architecture on the ramp

William Morris was a British architect, a textile designer, a poet and a social activist who was associated with British Arts and Crafts Movement. He founded an interior design firm called Morris & co. His firm influenced the interior decorations of the Victorian era profoundly. Morris designed wallpapers, prints, patterns, fabrics, embroideries, furniture and stained glasses. His textile prints were mostly flowers and leaves and connected to nature. He greatly contributed

these colours in garments. The influence of beautiful pastel shades of pink, purple, yellow, blue and green was very strong. The intricacies in the architecture are reflected in fashion through details on the garment like lace, net and necklines. The structured corsets were in great demand because the ideal shape of a Victorian woman is to have V-shaped torso with tiny waist and wide hips. The dresses were as elaborate and structured as the buildings.

to the industries of interior design, architecture and fashion and made a vast impact. His designed prints are still used in these industries worldwide. The very purpose to build a building is to express the culture capture the essence of it. Maybe the built structure is exhibiting the royalty or the simplicity of a place. Architecture never diverges from a culture but it has the ability to adapt and merge into the way of living.

The Silver Lining

of COVID-19

Amidst the crisis that has disrupted our normal existence with its tally increasing daily, this is the time to make the best of a bad situation. People are being brought together to share the same feelings of confinement while being distant from each other. This has served as an opportunity, providing us with the comfort of being in our own homes while we take a step back from the complexities of life. We now have the ability to establish connections that could have been lost. Getting in touch with things that make you happy which could be as simple as picking up that book that you always meant to read but never got around to it. Or even being able to acquire a new skill. It doesn’t have to mean productivity; it could even be spending quality time with your pets. Cities being brought to a halt does leave an impact on the economy, but the environment has been able to flourish in this time. Pollution and greenhouse

92 | NOOK- May 2020

gas emissions have seen a drastic decrease owing to the lockdown. Its hard to determine whether this would be temporary or not but considering the circumstances, it should be considered as a win. The pandemic has been a wakeup call for the fashion industry. The future here seems to be a sustainable one. There is a chance that Fashion emerges greener after this crisis. This industry has done excessive damage

to the planet and it’s time we put our planet before anything else. We have taken a hit because of this quarantine. The stores have been closed down and business has come to a halt. But as we know, Fashion never stops, most of the brands have shifted their interests to making surgical masks and protective equipment to fulfill the zeitgeist’s need. High luxury brands like Gucci, Prada, Balenciaga and a few more are manufacturing around 110000 masks. Another factor to consider on the positive side is the generosity that people have shown towards the less fortunate. Providing them with essentials to sustain themselves has helped to feed a substantial amount of the population. Ultimately, it’s up to us to focus on the positives in such a situation. We could fixate on all the problems but that wouldn’t be helpful as compared to being in a positive mind set and hoping for the best. - Anushka Arun
