Need 1:1 computing and the bandwitdth to support it Email Blog or wiki to get information to students Being prepared to fail

Reasons to go paperless • • • • •

improved learning environment organization -folders/ sharing calendars more efficient - saves time/ use is more meaningful for students, who especially are organized it's debatable if it saves resources or not gets rid of one time use paper not all paper

Getting started 1. Establish a routine-warm up question on the wiki with any docs needed posted there; download any docs needed for class; can be answered using chat during class? 2. Collect email addresses (helpful if school issues email addresses) 3. Create group e-mail lists Benefits • assignments emailed to you • due dates are clear since time posted shows up • teacher in control of work handed in /student can't make changes Problems • students don't name assignments properly-clearly explain how to do this • don't put the correct subject in the email put hw or homework • many files on hard drive Cloud based

• Google Doc - create collection • Name file System - block assignment name student name Benefits • • • • •

anywhere access -w/internet revision history -able to see when and what students have done no worry about email can copy docs-have a record of what students have done collaboration-more than one person at a time editing at the same time

Problems • if there is no internet • students can erase files-so copy them quickly Paperless classroom more appropriate for upper elementary and higher, not lower elementary. Might be easier to copy and paste, but circumvent cheating by focusing on creating project based assignments and using critical thinking skills. Can have parents set up google and students can share folders with them as well as the teacher =================================================================== Presenter contact info: www.stevenkatz.com Twitter: @SteveKatz important Simplek12 links: Collaborize Classroom (free online learning platform) http://simplek12.com/tlc/classroom/ More Free SimpleK12 Webinars http://simplek12.com/tlc/webinars SimpleK12 Blog- http://blog.simplek12.com/ SimpleK12 YouTube Channel- http://www.youtube.com/simplek12team Past SimpleK12 webinar Backchannels http://simplek12.titanpad.com/2 - Kerpoof Webinar http://simplek12.titanpad.com/1 - 21st Century Projects Webinar http://jeremyteq.titanpad.com/4 - Dropbox Webinar http://simplek12.titanpad.com/3 - Breaking Down the Four Walls of Your Classroom (Skype) http://simplek12.titanpad.com/5 - Accessing and Creating Virtual Field Trips http://simplek12.titanpad.com/6 - Cite This: Two Free Tools that Make Citing Sources Easy! http://simplek12.titanpad.com/7 - Using Technology to Address the Core Issues and Challenges of Special Education http://simplek12.titanpad.com/8 - The Right Tools for the Right Job: 30 Tools in 50 Minutes
