HOLY NAME FIRST GRADERS PARTICIPATE IN THE PUNCT-SHOE-ATION GAME

Writing is not that easy, but Mrs. Rowe can help! On Friday, September 10, first graders in Mrs. Krystalyn Rowe’s homeroom at Holy Name School had the opportunity to put their skills to the test. They had been examining the parts of a sentence by learning capitalization, punctuation, word order, nouns, verbs, and spacing. A fun way to apply their new-found knowledge, mixed with some exercise, and of course featuring shoes, was with the punct-SHOEation game. This was the perfect way to demonstrate mastery of multiple English-Language Arts standards. Each child brought in a shoe of any size, shape, or type. From there, sentence strips were attached, and the students got to race to find the perfect shoe, playing multiple rounds on a Friday afternoon. They practiced walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, often times they were incapable of taking a stroll around the school building. Eventually, the students wound up back in the classroom to correctly write and punct-SHOE-ate their shoe’s sentence. This twist on an essential skill led to hysterical laughing and oh so much fun!

HENDERSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY HOSTS DIARY OF A WIMPY KID SCAVENGER HUNT

During the week of October 25 - November 1, students had the opportunity to stop by Henderson County Public Library’s Children’s Department to participate in a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was based around Jeff Kinney’s newest book, “Big Shot” in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Once students turned in their completed sheet, they were given a small prize. This was a fun way to introduce this new book to students here in our community.
