Energy On Ice

From the day after Thanksgiving through January 3, the Kentucky Legend Pier was home to “Energy On Ice,” an outdoor skating experience made possible by Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Boardwalk Pipelines and Atmos Energy. The 80x60-foot rink was constructed of synthetic ice, and provided a fantastic venue for skating and views of the river. The experience also included movie nights, live music, concessions, and a breakfast with Santa.

After operating on Moseley Street for more than 12 years, Habitat for Humanity purchased the old General Glass Building at 2930 West 4th Street. Executive Director Virginia Braswell said the new facility would better allow her team to serve the community’s evolving needs. Habitat for Humanity is a nonproft housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states and in more than 70 countries worldwide. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Holiday Inn Igloo

During the City’s 12 Days of Christmas event, Holiday Inn Owensboro Riverfront and Friday After 5 partnered to turn the hotel property into a local “North Pole” with a weekly infatable “Inngloo” ofering free hot chocolate on the courtyard behind the hotel. Santa made weekly appearances and the each week featured a diferent performer in the hotel lobby.

Reindeer Run 5K

Care Net Owensboro hosted their 7th Annual Reindeer Run 5K on December 4, and the race attracted the highest turnout in the history of the event. Nearly 600 runners took to the streets of downtown Owensboro, where the 3.16-mile loop course began and ended at Smothers Park. Along with the 5K the event included a pre-run, where children under age 7 got a chance to run in the Reindeer Dash. Care Net provides free services to their clients including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment among other services.

Festival to Honor Sleet in ‘23

Moneta Sleet, Jr., previously profled in Owensboro Living’s September 2018 issue, is an Owensboro native, and the frst African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for journalism. His work includes photographs of the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr., where his presence was personally requested by Coretta Scott King. In an efort to remember and recognize Sleet’s work and achievements, Daviess County Fiscal Court awarded a $50,000 grant to be used to host a festival in his honor in February 2023.
