02 the construction of an image in pursuit of a non-content / non-context architecture 03 From a sea of forgettable buildings something foreign and something familiar emerged. A mannerist composition of postindustrial shrapnel, to put it plainly. Frustratingly, its careful sculpting was not enough to muster a unique identity. However, historical satellite imagery of the construction site revealed a different beast lying dormant beneath the surface. The neighboring warehouses had dumped their contents into this one lot, now welded, distorted, and shredded into non-architecture.

GOWANUS_v6 09

02 a waterfront performing arts center to revitalize Gowanus 03 The Gowanus Performing Art Center makes use of a spiraling ramped circulation to calibrate overunder spatial sequences from the point of entry on site to the upper gallery and concert hall spaces. The interweaving of experimental and traditional forms of media carries visitors through a spectrum of experiences, ranging from viewing a contemporary artist’s workshop to attending a classical orchestral concert. The building is simultaneously a destination for cultural events, a familiar refuge for Brooklyn residents, and a terminus for the waterfront.

DISFIGURED 13

02 a installation to provide sculptural performance spaces 03 Early development of the structure took on a careful approach of cutting, merging, and cropping 3D-scanned geometry. Techniques from prototypical architecture were later appropriated into the project’s development, including the use of a modular kit of parts. The traditional roles of ornament in architecture, were questioned before being tactically challenged or reinforced. While inserting graphically-driven ideas on the form itself, the use of golden trim and saturated color represents a distortion of the porcelain ceramic influences.

NEWMALLCITY 17

02 a mega-building to activate the contemporary Chinese landscape 03 In the translation of abstracted landscape studies into spatial elements, scale shifts provided room for confusion of type, material, and function. This proved advantageous on a massive site, allowing for simultaneous consideration of sculptural buildingscale and intimate human-scale moves. Ideas of Victor Grün (pioneer of the suburban mall) were a point of entry into designing for the modern flaneur in Shanghai, where colossal proportions might seem antithetical to hand-hewn specificity.

PARACITY 21

02 a nomadic reinterpretation of contemporary urban living 03 Issues of access, inclusion, and social equity have become increasingly present in the mainstream psyche in as the growth of cities pose difficulties in mobility. ParaCITY proposes a nomadic reinterpretation of contemporary urban living where transitions between home, work, and learning dissolve as personal cells cluster to invade the city’s façades and later to collapse inward as the owners flow into their various engagements.
