It’s an exciting time to be in Edmonton. As one of the youngest, fastest-growing cities in Canada, our future has never looked brighter. We are a city with a long and storied past, and a strong reputation as a centre for commerce and entrepreneurial development. Today, we continue to grow as a city of opportunity, with diverse strengths emerging in sectors ranging from food to life sciences to technology and artificial intelligence. In addition to our resilient economy, we’re home to an outstanding array of post-secondary institutions, a thriving arts and cultural scene and a wealth of natural splendor. Whether you’re visiting for work or leisure, for a few days or a few months, our city will no doubt delight and amaze. Take some time to stroll through the largest museum in Western Canada, take part in one of our many cultural festivals or spend an afternoon exploring our remarkable river valley. No matter your preference, and no matter the season, I’m sure you’ll find something to suit your palate in our city. So on behalf of all Edmontonians, welcome. We hope you enjoy your stay with us here in Alberta’s Capital City! Yours truly,

Welcome to the Royal Alberta Museum

New, fabulous, and waiting to be discovered!

A

museum 65 million years (plus three more) in the making is finally here! The Royal Alberta Museum’s new location in downtown Edmonton officially opened in October 2018, to an awaiting public that’s been holding its breath semi-patiently since the beloved museum began its massive move three years ago. At its first home in the west Edmonton neighbourhood of Glenora, the RAM was well loved and popular—hosting nearly 14 million visitors since it opened in 1967. Today, in a space double the size of its old location, the RAM is not only one of Canada’s best museums but also Western Canada’s largest! Its extensive collection of more than two million objects includes everything from pictographs and prehistoric plant-eaters to mountain landscapes and unusual insects. Celebrate the earth’s diversity in the Natural History Gallery, which includes detailed dioramas, preserved fossils, and precious gems and meteorites. Then visit the Human History Gallery to learn more about Alberta’s diverse past and present, from Indigenous culture and history to the Olympics and the Edmonton Oilers. Did you know invertebrates make up 97 percent of the animal kingdom? Learn the spine-tingling fun facts in the Bug Gallery! Speaking of fun, don’t miss the Children’s Gallery. The hands-on activities help foster the love of discovery from an early age and invite toddlers, kids—and the young at heart—to play, build, slide, tumble, dress up, and more. No visit is complete without a stop at the museum’s gift shop. You’ll find artworks, books, toys, and perfect souvenirs—plus more than half the products are made by local and Indigenous makers from Alberta, and the store’s proceeds support RAM programming and services. The wait is finally over—now go feed your curiosity. || 9810-103A Ave., 825-468-6000. royalalbertamuseum.ca

Edmonton’s Queen Returns Cruise the North Saskatchewan in riverboat style

S

he may be a queen only in the hearts of those who knew her, but the Edmonton Riverboat is finally holding court once more. Reimagined and refurbished, the iconic ship relaunched in 2018 with a new owner—but the same desire to show off our river valley. The Edmonton Queen first set sail on Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River in 1996 and quickly became a popular tourist attraction and picturesque way to enjoy the river valley. In 2014, the beloved Queen was permanently docked, running only as a restaurant until it sold in an online auction in 2016. Two more docked years later, she was finally ready for her second inaugural sail! Today, the newly dubbed Edmonton Riverboat rules over its riverbend once again, thanks to new permits, renovations, and upgrades. So step aboard, and savour the city’s stunning ribbon of green, as you tour between the newly constructed Walterdale Bridge and Dawson Bridge. The paddle-wheel boat pushes off four nights a week, with daytime cruises available on weekends. Leisure and dinner cruises are also available, and are perfect for a romantic date, a family-friendly event, or an afternoon with friends. || Check out launch times, and reserve your spot at edmontonriverboat.ca.

TREATY 6

Amiskwaciwâskahikan Amiskwaciwâskahikan is the Cree name for the area that is now Edmonton. Our beautiful city is on traditional lands, referred to as Treaty 6 Territory, and it has the second largest Indigenous population of all Canadian municipalities. The treaty dates back to 1876 and encompasses the traditional territories of numerous Canadian Indigenous peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux.

Parks & Tributes Alex Decoteau Park The downtown park features open green space, a community garden, and a fenced off-leash area. The park’s name and featured artwork pay tribute to Alex Decoteau, the first Indigenous police officer in Canada. 105 St. & 102 Ave. Beaver Hills House Park This bustling downtown park includes the Aboriginal Walk of Honour, a tribute to Aboriginal artists who blazed trails in the film industry. 105 St. & Jasper Ave. 14

Garneau Tributes The Garneau area is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Edmonton, and Métis activist and settler Laurent Garneau was one of the first to obtain property for farming. A monument for Garneau currently exists in Adair Park (110 St. and 90 Ave.), and a commemorative plaque resides at the base of a maple tree he planted in 1874 (111 St. and 90 Ave.). Rossdale Memorial A cemetery for Aboriginal Peoples and Fort Edmonton settlers, including the burial ground for Chief Papaschase, existed in the Rossdale area where EPCOR sought to expand. Aboriginal activists sought to protect the site, and the city acted when human remains were recovered, thus removing and reburying them in a

protected area. Both a monument at the traditional burial site (105 St. & River Valley Rd.) and the new memorial site (101 St. & 96 Ave.) exist to honour the respective ancestors. Aboriginal Veterans’ Monument This monument on the Alberta Legislature Grounds was placed in 2004 to honour the Indigenous veterans of Alberta who have served in Canada’s military. Indigenous Garden The Indigenous Garden at the U of A Botanic Garden features plants that have traditional uses by Indigenous peoples, including medicinal, dietary, and ornamentation. botanicgarden.ualberta.ca

Indigenous Art Park The new Indigenous Art Park— ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞—is located within Queen Elizabeth Park in the river lot formerly homesteaded by Métis settler Joseph McDonald. Opened in 2018, it hosts six new artworks that celebrate the city’s rich Indigenous history. The featured Canadian artists—Amy Malbeuf, Tiffany Shaw-Collinge, Duane Linklater, Jerry Whitehead, Anne Barkhouse, and Marianne Nicolson—created their proposals after consulting with Elders, Indigenous residents of Edmonton, and several other Indigenous organizations in the area.

Daniel Foreman Inspired by his heritage and the stories of other Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Métis filmmaker Daniel Foreman created the awardwinning Legendary Myths series with his Treaty 6 Productions’ partner, Sharlene Millang. Meet Daniel Foreman…

Tell us about the film you’ll be shooting this year, The Horned Serpent. The story deals with a few different themes, including the lack of initiation rituals we have to help boys transition into men, the high rate of missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the power of family.

What do you hope people take away from your work? I would hope they would look at some of the issues we tackled. In [one] short film, I address the racism issues we have in our culture. As Canadians, we like to think ourselves to be above that kind of thinking and behaviour, but it is here whether we like it or not. I think a big first step in moving past racism is to acknowledge that it does exist in society and in us.

I market myself around the Indigenous background, Indigenous food, and food sovereignty and reverence. And being a good, responsible chef and getting the best ingredients we can. What do you do to stay inspired? I like to take ingredients and mess around with them and figure them out in a way that’s interesting… I’m addicted to art. I love painting, music—and food is in the same circle. Tell us about your cookbook, Tawâw: Progressive Indigenous Cuisine. It’s story-driven, picture-driven, emotion-driven... There’s no Aboriginal cookbook like it that’s ever been done.

In 1979, a group of volunteers formed the Edmonton Radial Railway Society (ERRS) and began to restore the single remaining streetcar. In 1997, service over the entire line from Strathcona to Grandin commenced. Today, the ERRS boasts the largest fleet of heritage electric streetcars in Western Canada. || Fall hours run from September 7 to October 8. edmonton-radial-railway.ab.ca

ARTS & CULTURE

Meet the Owners What were the first pieces of art that these gallery owners owned? Here’s what they had to say... “It was a still life of lilies that I fell in love with at a Rotary auction when I was 25. I didn’t grow up in a home filled with original art and was astounded by my reaction to the piece. I’m sure I overbid, but I’ve never regretted it. I always sketched and wrote as a child, but it was at that moment that I realized the importance of original art.” – Rachel Bouchard, Front Gallery “When I was growing up in Regina, I would regularly frequent the local estate auctions. It was at one of these auctions that I purchased an early watercolour by Saskatchewan artist Robert N. Hurley. It is still one of the favourite works of art that I own. This experience was the seed from which Lando Gallery and Lando Auctions grew.” –Brent Luebke, Lando Gallery “The first work of art I owned that was and remains memorable, is a large abstract drawing by Edmonton artist Tim Rechner. Years later, I still get a charge every time I look at it. Taken on its own terms, I think it is near perfect.” – Heather Hamel, Scott Gallery “My mother opened the Bearclaw Gallery in 1975 when I was 11. A few years later, we received a shipment of silkscreen prints by an artist named Elizabeth Scott. One of the pieces, entitled “Rendezvous,” depicted a young child on a shore holding her dog. It was sentimental and loving, just what a young animal lover might cherish in 1979.” – Jackie Bugera, Bearclaw Gallery “I was 14 and working parttime for my mother at the Bearclaw Gallery. I was either going to buy a framed limited-edition lithograph of a woman losing her headscarf in the wind (very romantic), or, I was considering a Norval Morriseau bear on handmade paper. They were about the same price then. Much to my chagrin, I chose the lithograph.” – Angela Bugera, Bugera Matheson Gallery

Daniel and Edith Zdrodowski’s path to owning one of Alberta’s first cottage wineries began when they opened a U-pick fruit orchard on their farm. Edmonton Mall Alberta’s biggest tourist

destination, it also attracts twice as many visitors per year than Disneyland! Impressed? It’s hard not to be. At 5.3 million square feet, this 48-city-block mall boasts more than 800 stores and services, over 100 restaurants, the world’s largest indoor amusement park, and multiple world-class attractions— including a five-acre indoor waterpark. It goes without saying that you’ll find great shopping at WEM, but what might surprise you is Europa Boulevard—an indoor avenue of boutiques, showcasing storefronts clad in Old World architecture and charm. Also unexpected is WEM’s very own Chinatown, featuring a T&T supermarket. Looking for some sun and family fun? Blue skies, beach chairs, and five acres of activities await you at WEM’s World Waterpark. It’s home to epic waterslides, a wave pool, ziplines, hot tubs, private cabanas, a beach-view

bar, and more. Not feeling the surf? Go skating at the indoor Ice Palace, play some glow-in-the-dark minigolf, or head to Ed’s Bowling to knock down some pins and school your kids at retro arcade games. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, choose from over 100 restaurants, some of which you’ll find on Bourbon Street—a New Orleansinspired avenue, bustling with great eats and ambience. For some fun without the kids, head to the Starlight Casino, featuring 120,000 square feet of entertainment with 32 gaming tables, 768 slots, private salons, and 6 restaurants, including Halley’s Club—a retro-inspired supper club with a classic cabaret vibe. If entertainment on the big screen is more your style, Hollywood’s latest blockbusters are waiting for you at the Scotiabank Theatre. Just when you think it’s home time, think again. The mall’s Fantasyland Hotel is the perfect spot to rest and recharge in one of the executive suites or fantasy-themed rooms before waking up to say, “Hello, day two!”

s the saying goes, you can be a good neighbour only if you have a good neighbour, and St. Albert and Sherwood Park are two of the best. St. Albert, just minutes north of Edmonton, is known as the “Botanical Arts City” in acknowledgement of all it values, enjoys, and celebrates. Sherwood Park, located adjacent to Edmonton’s eastern boundary, is best known for its small-town vibe and community spirit, despite being one of the fastest-growing cities in Alberta.

SERVICES

Ask the Expert

Les Clefs d’Or Corner One of your most valuable travel resources (other than the Info Edmonton City Guide, of course) sits in plain sight in the lobby of your hotel—the concierge. They are the ultimate insiders, able to get you a table at the perfect restaurant, recommend the best boutiques, and tell you what’s worth seeing. Best of all, that expansive knowledge is available absolutely free! Throughout the year, we ask Les Clefs d’Or Nella Mirante at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald for her advice. Here are some of our favourite answers. What is your favourite thing about summer in Edmonton? The best thing about summer in Edmonton is our festivals. Just a few of my (many) faves include the International Street Performers Festival, Sand on Whyte, and the Edmonton Blues Festival.

Where do you recommend checking out live music in the city? I love attending shows at Station on Jasper and Yardbird Suite.

is in the Castle: our Harvest Room at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. It’s where we turn moments into memories.

Where would you recommend someone dine before a concert or hockey game at Rogers Place? Rostizado is the best place to go before a game or concert. It has great cocktails and plates for sharing— and make sure you save room for the churros.

Where would you send guests looking for the perfect outfit for a special occasion? My favourite go-to for that special-occasion outfit is at Holt Renfrew, where they always provide personalized service and attention.

If you had only one day in the city, how would you spend it? I would suggest spending the day in Old Strathcona. It’s one of my favourite districts, with amazing shopping, great food, and everything local to Edmonton. What is your recommendation for a great spot to toast and celebrate? The best place to toast and celebrate

What’s your favourite winter festival? I love the Boardwalk Ice on Whyte and the return of the ice castles in Hawrelak Park. How can guests best experience Edmonton’s autumn charm? Seek adventure in Edmonton’s river valley. Ride bikes, go for a stroll, board the riverboat, or take a guided tour on Segways to enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

Be our guest. Upgrade your style. • Rested. Set. Go. • Pet friendly • Free wireless high speed • All rooms equipped with microwave and fridge • Minutes from West Edmonton Mall 780-484-4415 | 17610 – 100 Ave Edmonton, AB T5S 1S9

O Cannabis

Canada made headlines last year when recreational cannabis was legalized across the country on October 17, 2018. But just like with alcohol and tobacco, there are laws and regulations regarding its consumption.

LEARN THE LAWS The federally legislated Cannabis Act outlines the legal amount of cannabis that an adult may possess, share, purchase, and grow. However, if you are travelling within Canada, you are responsible to learn the laws of the provinces, territories, and even the individual municipalities you will be visiting. Individual municipalities (Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, etc.) may create additional restrictions on top of provincial and federal legislations.

FAST FACTS

STAY UP TO DATE

In Alberta, you must be 18+ to use and/or purchase cannabis.

For the most current and accurate information, visit these official websites:

You may purchase cannabis from provincially- and federallylicensed retailers only.

City of Edmonton edmonton.ca/cannabis

In Edmonton, you may consume cannabis in designated cannabis consumption areas, and in some parks and trails.
