The Royal Alberta Museum’s new location in downtown Edmonton officially opened in October 2018, to an awaiting public that’s been holding its breath semi-patiently since the beloved museum began its massive move three years ago. At its first home in the west Edmonton neighbourhood of Glenora, the RAM was well loved and popular—hosting nearly 14 million visitors since it opened in 1967. Today, in a space double the size of its old location, the RAM is not only one of Canada’s best museums but also Western Canada’s largest! Its extensive collection of more than two million objects includes everything from pictographs and prehistoric plant-eaters to mountain landscapes and unusual insects. Celebrate the earth’s diversity in the Natural History Gallery, which includes detailed dioramas, preserved fossils, and precious gems and meteorites. Then visit the Human History Gallery to learn more about Alberta’s diverse past and present, from Indigenous culture and history to the Olympics and the Edmonton Oilers. Did you know invertebrates make up 97 percent of the animal kingdom? Learn the spine-tingling fun facts in the Bug Gallery! Speaking of fun, don’t miss the Children’s Gallery. Edmonton’s Queen Returns Cruise the North Saskatchewan in riverboat style

he may be a queen only in the hearts of those who knew her, but the Edmonton Riverboat is finally holding court once more. Reimagined and refurbished, the iconic ship relaunched in 2018 with a new owner—but the same desire to show off our river valley. The Edmonton Queen first set sail on Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River in 1996 and quickly became a popular tourist attraction and picturesque way to enjoy the river valley. In 2014, the beloved Queen was permanently docked, running only as a restaurant until it sold in an online auction in 2016. Two more docked years later, she was finally ready for her second inaugural sail! Today, the newly dubbed Edmonton Riverboat rules over its riverbend once again, thanks to new permits, renovations, and upgrades. So step aboard, and savour the city’s stunning ribbon of green, as you tour between the newly constructed Walterdale Bridge and Dawson Bridge. The paddle-wheel boat pushes off four nights a week, with daytime cruises available on weekends. Aga Khan Garden T he northernmost Islamic garden in the world is now only 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton. The Aga Khan Garden officially opened to the public in June 2018 after nearly a decade of planning, 18

months of construction—and a $25-million donation from the spiritual leader of the world’s Ismaili

Muslim community. This newest addition to the award-winning University of Alberta Botanic Garden balances Islamic traditions with the Edmonton region’s climate and landscape, featuring geometric water features,

Funicular

Edmonton’s beautiful river valley just got a whole lot more accessible! The multi-million-dollar Mechanized River Valley Access Project connects the top of 100 Street in downtown Edmonton (near the Hotel Macdonald, 10065-100 St.) to Louise McKinney Park. Inside a fully enclosed glass funicular, up to 20 riders can ride down to a lookout point where they can enjoy breathtaking views of the expansive parkland. From there, riders have the option to take either the stairs or an elevator down to the park. Whether you’re just joyriding or need a fast way down that will accommodate a mobility aid, stroller, or bicycle, the funicular is a great way to get around and is free to everyone, at just the push of a button. || edmonton.ca

Ice District

Edmonton’s Ice District is shaping up to be one of the largest sports and entertainment districts in Canada! Rogers Place, the new state-of-the-art arena and home to the Edmonton Oilers, opened in the fall of 2016 and has already welcomed some of the best performers from all over the world. Out front, you’ll find the relocated and refurbished Wayne Gretzky statue, and inside you can admire the floor of Ford Hall, which showcases a mosaic that honours the land area where Edmonton is as a historic meeting place. A $165-million expansion project at Fort Edmonton Park began in 2018 and is expected to progress to 2020. It includes the expansion of the Johnny J. Jones and the Hotel Selkirk, a new guest services and admissions area, and the building of the Indigenous Peoples’ Experience. New Home for Horse Racing

Open in April 2019, the multiple-level Century Mile Racetrack and Casino is a new home for horse racing in Edmonton. It includes a milelong track, an 800-stall barn, slot machines, great dining options, and family-friendly experiences, such as concerts and festivals. TREATY 6

Amiskwaciwâskahikan Amiskwaciwâskahikan is the Cree name for the area that is now Edmonton. Our beautiful city is on traditional lands, referred to as Treaty 6 Territory, and it has the second largest Indigenous population of all Canadian municipalities. The treaty dates back to 1876 and encompasses the traditional territories of numerous Canadian Indigenous peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux.

Parks & Tributes Alex Decoteau Park The downtown park features open green space, a community garden, and a fenced off-leash area. The park’s name and featured artwork pay tribute to Alex Decoteau, the first Indigenous police officer in Canada. 105 St. & 102 Ave. Beaver Hills House Park This bustling downtown park includes the Aboriginal Walk of Honour, a tribute to Aboriginal artists who blazed trails in the film industry. 105 St. & Jasper Ave. 14

Garneau Tributes The Garneau area is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Edmonton, and Métis activist and settler Laurent Garneau was one of the first to obtain property for farming. A monument for Garneau currently exists in Adair Park (110 St. and 90 Ave.), and a commemorative plaque resides at the base of a maple tree he planted in 1874 (111 St. and 90 Ave.). Rossdale Memorial A cemetery for Aboriginal Peoples and Fort Edmonton settlers, including the burial ground for Chief Papaschase, existed in the Rossdale area where EPCOR sought to expand. Aboriginal activists sought to protect the site, and the city acted when human remains were recovered, thus removing and reburying them in a

protected area. Both a monument at the traditional burial site (105 St. & River Valley Rd.) and the new memorial site (101 St. & 96 Ave.) exist to honour the respective ancestors. Aboriginal Veterans’ Monument This monument on the Alberta Legislature Grounds was placed in 2004 to honour the Indigenous veterans of Alberta who have served in Canada’s military. Indigenous Garden The Indigenous Garden at the U of A Botanic Garden features plants that have traditional uses by Indigenous peoples, including medicinal, dietary, and ornamentation. botanicgarden.ualberta.ca

Indigenous Art Park The new Indigenous Art Park— ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞—is located within Queen Elizabeth Park in the river lot formerly homesteaded by Métis settler Joseph McDonald. Opened in 2018, it hosts six new artworks that celebrate the city’s rich Indigenous history. The featured Canadian artists—Amy Malbeuf, Tiffany Shaw-Collinge, Duane Linklater, Jerry Whitehead, Anne Barkhouse, and Marianne Nicolson—created their proposals after consulting with Elders, Indigenous residents of Edmonton, and several other Indigenous organizations in the area.

Museums & Artworks Royal Alberta Museum Working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and Elders, the Royal Alberta Museum opened the new building with a traditional ceremony to bless the space and acknowledge the Treaty 6 territory. A significant addition to the new RAM is the integration of Indigenous histories throughout the six galleries in the Human History Hall. Daniel Foreman Inspired by his heritage and the stories of other Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Métis filmmaker Daniel Foreman created the awardwinning Legendary Myths series with his Treaty 6 Productions’ partner, Sharlene Millang. Meet Daniel Foreman…

Tell us about the film you’ll be shooting this year, The Horned Serpent. The story deals with a few different themes, including the lack of initiation rituals we have to help boys transition into men, the high rate of missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the power of family.

What do you hope people take away from your work? I would hope they would look at some of the issues we tackled. In [one] short film, I address the racism issues we have in our culture. As Canadians, we like to think ourselves to be above that kind of thinking and behaviour, but it is here whether we like it or not. I think a big first step in moving past racism is to acknowledge that it does exist in society and in us.

You’ve said Legendary Myths would be a great resource in schools. How so? We designed the series to teach about different Indigenous cultures, language, and history. The live-action segments introduce and then reiterate the teaching, and the animation expounds upon the lesson with a goal to captivate the audience and entertain… We are approaching different school boards across Western Canada and plan on working with them to develop teaching resources that work with the individual episodes.

RiverFest

Aug 10 | EPCOR RiverFest is an annual celebration of our stunning river valley, designed to promote its activities and improve access. Although you can enjoy the river valley year-round, you won’t want to miss the floating, food trucks, and fun of this festival. The river float down the North Saskatchewan is EPCOR RiverFest’s signature event. In 2018, more than 1,500 people joined in the float, and nearly 4,000 paddlers made their way to the river. If you want to join and get out on the water, be sure to book your raft early. Fall Family Fun

Enjoy a beautiful view of the river valley, and time travel through Edmonton’s history on the High Level Bridge Streetcar. Streetcar service became available in 1913 but was abandoned in 1951 as the popularity of automobiles rose. In 1979, a group of volunteers formed the Edmonton Radial Railway Society (ERRS) and began to restore the single remaining streetcar. In 1997, service over the entire line from Strathcona to Grandin commenced. Meet the Owners What were the first pieces of art that these gallery owners owned? Here’s what they had to say... “It was a still life of lilies that I fell in love with at a Rotary auction when I was 25. I didn’t grow up in a home filled with original art and was astounded by my reaction to the piece. I’m sure I overbid, but I’ve never regretted it. I always sketched and wrote as a child, but it was at that moment that I realized the importance of original art.” – Rachel Bouchard, Front Gallery “When I was growing up in Regina, I would regularly frequent the local estate auctions. It was at one of these auctions that I purchased an early watercolour by Saskatchewan artist Robert N. Hurley. It is still one of the favourite works of art that I own. This experience was the seed from which Lando Gallery and Lando Auctions grew.” –Brent Luebke, Lando Gallery “The first work of art I owned that was and remains memorable, is a large abstract drawing by Edmonton artist Tim Rechner. Years later, I still get a charge every time I look at it. A few years later, we received a shipment of silkscreen prints by an artist named Elizabeth Scott. One of the pieces, entitled “Rendezvous,” depicted a young child on a shore holding her dog. Elk Island National Park

Elk Island National Park, Canada’s first federal wildlife sanctuary, was established in 1906 to protect elk populations. Today, it is home not only to elk but also to bison, moose, deer, and more than 250 species of birds—including trumpeter swans, a threatened species that the park now protects. Though the park is a popular destination for hiking, canoeing, camping, and other recreational activities, many visitors come specifically to enjoy and learn about the park’s conservation efforts. A Bison Backstage Tour is even available to those who want to learn about all the care and work that goes into maintaining the herds of bison that roam the park. Lois Hole Provincial Centennial Park

Named in hour of Alberta’s 15th Lieutenant Governor, Lois E. Hole, this hidden-gem of a park preserves Big Lake, a freshwater wetland ecosystem, globally recognized as one of Alberta’s most important bird habitat areas. The Edmonton International Airport (code YEG, flyeia.com) serves international, national, and regional airlines. It is located about 30 km (19 miles), or 30-40 minutes, from downtown. There are a few options to get to and from the airport:

The VIA Rail (viarail.ca) station is located at 12360-121 St. and is where you can catch The Canadian® east to Saskatoon, Winnipeg, or Toronto, and west to Jasper, Kamloops, and Vancouver.

Hire a taxi. Fare from the airport to the city centre is about $55. Fares to other locations are charged by a zone (not metered) rate.

If you had only one day in the city, how would you spend it? I would suggest spending the day in Old Strathcona. It’s one of my favourite districts, with amazing shopping, great food, and everything local to Edmonton. What is your recommendation for a great spot to toast and celebrate? What’s your favourite winter festival? I love the Boardwalk Ice on Whyte and the return of the ice castles in Hawrelak Park. How can guests best experience Edmonton’s autumn charm? Seek adventure in Edmonton’s river valley. Ride bikes, go for a stroll, board the riverboat, or take a guided tour on Segways to enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
