BE SOCIAL: What’s your favourite thing about an Edmonton winter? Email me your thoughts!

The winter season invites us to reflect and find joy in the simple pleasures of life. It’s a time to relish in the warmth of good company, discover new flavours, and embrace the wonder that winter offers. We love making the rounds with family and friends this time of year, and assume you do, too. To start this issue, we bring local ideas on how to elevate your festive wardrobe. From choosing the perfect party outfit to accessorizing with flair, you can find inspiration from a shop just down the street to help you shine at every holiday gathering (pg 12). We also invite you to immerse yourself in culinary traditions from around the world (pg 26), local shops that add character to their communities (pg 16), and exciting holiday events (pg 30). For those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of the season, we present a selection of winter getaways that promise relaxation, adventure, and the magic of the winter landscape (pg 34). So whether you’re donning your finest, strapping on snowshoes, trying new dishes, or exploring shopping destinations throughout the city, we’re here to be your guide to a winter season filled with warmth, flair, and connection. Happy exploring!

WE ASKED:

1) What are you most looking forward to this winter? 2) What’s a memorable gift you’ve given or received?

PHOTOS: AABA, 124 ST BA, ASPEN ZETTEL

ERICK 1) Alberta Avenue looks beautiful in winter: the boulevard trees are lit up and the snow always makes everything look extra special. It's also the perfect time to try out all the comfort food on the Avenue. Nothing warms you up like curry, fried chicken, or something spicy! 2) A memorable gift was one that my wife bought at the Bid and Sip fundraising event hosted by the Alberta Avenue Community League. It was a basket of products from the garden, including Honey and Honey whisky from their 100th anniversary. Erick Estrada, Executive Director at Alberta Avenue Business Association

KYZLE

ASPEN

1) I am most excited about our annual winter light-up festival, All Is Bright! It’s just around the corner on November 18th. It’s my 3rd year working at this festival, and it has been a joy seeing Edmonton celebrate the coming of the winter season with illumination and fun winter activities. The bright twinkling lights in the winter time are also picture-perfect.

1) The first hoarfrost, when everything is covered in the white crystalline ice that sparkles in the sunlight and makes the winter berries look like rubies encrusted with diamonds. And the long nights mean more of a chance to see aurora.

2) The most recent memorable gift I’ve given would be taking my mom to see one of her favourite artists. It was such a fun experience to have with my mom—a night to remember! Kyzle Tabanay, Marketing Coordinator at 124 Street & Area Business Association

INFO EDMONTON MAGAZINE

2) I really struggle with giving gifts, so I always go to my best friend for advice. She takes me on hiking trips where she plans everything and brings everything we need to enjoy ourselves. Not having to carry the mental workload—that's the gift that nothing else can compare with! Aspen Zettel, Edmonton photographer (incl. our gorgeous cover!)

The holiday season is upon us, bringing with it an air of celebration, joy, and a calendar full of parties. Whether it's an office gathering, a family reunion, or a festive soirée with friends, the opportunity to dress up and showcase your unique style is an integral part of the merriment. As you prepare to dazzle at these holiday parties, here are some tips to help you create show-stopping looks that capture the spirit of the season.

1. Elegance with a Festive Twist: When selecting your holiday party attire, aim for a balance between elegance and festivity. Classic silhouettes like little black dresses or tailored suits serve as timeless canvases, allowing you to incorporate festive elements through accessories. Consider adding a statement necklace, a sparkly clutch, or a bowtie in a bold color to infuse your outfit with holiday cheer.

Green Flocked Floral Tulle Dress, from Simons, $119 with Wishbone Gloria Shoes, from Browns, $198, Gold Frankie Clutch, from Anthropologie, $90, and Maroon Rosette Headband, from Shop Harrow, $80

2. Embrace the Power of Metallics: Metallic hues are a holiday fashion staple. Gold, silver, and bronze tones instantly evoke a sense of glamour and celebration. Incorporate metallic accents into your outfit through shimmering dresses, metallic shoes, or even a sequined blazer. These pieces catch the light and add an element of luxury to your ensemble.

5. Statement Pieces and Accessories: Elevate your holiday outfit with statement pieces and accessories that reflect your personality. A chunky statement necklace, chandelier earrings, or an embellished clutch can transform even a simple outfit into something remarkable. Don't be afraid to mix and match textures and colours to create a unique and eye-catching ensemble.

6. Comfort is Key:

Icône Pearls and Crystals Mesh Dress, $99, with Oversized Satiny Blazer, $139, Twik Diamonds Mini Shorts, $69, Bust-Lined Cami, $17, North Face Box Cuff Beanie, $35, all from Simons, Green Metallic Puffer Bag, from Anthropologie, $68., and Dancer Tall Boots, from Manitobah, $230.

While dressing up is an exciting part of holiday parties, it's essential to prioritize comfort. Choose clothing

3. Play with Texture: Texture plays a significant role in creating visually appealing outfits. Consider garments featuring velvet, lace, faux fur, or satin for an added dimension to your holiday look. A velvet blazer or a lace-detailed dress can instantly elevate your ensemble and make you stand out.

4. The Bold and the Bright:

Holiday parties provide the perfect opportunity to embrace bold colours and rich jewel tones. Deep reds, emerald greens, and royal blues are all reminiscent of the season and can make a striking impression. Opt for a dress or a suit in a vibrant hue, and pair it with neutral accessories to let the colour shine. 14

7. Dapper and Debonair:

For men, holiday dressing offers the chance to showcase a dapper style. A well-fitted suit paired with a crisp dress shirt and a coordinating tie is a timeless choice. Experiment with patterns like plaid or houndstooth to infuse your outfit with a touch of seasonal flair.

Stephen: Red Le 31 Wide-Lapel DoubleBreasted Overcoat, $695, with Patterned Black/Red Printed Mesh T-Shirt, $50, Green Faux-Leather Seoul Fit Pants, $99, Champagne Pearls Necklace, $725, all from Simons, and Tundra Mukluk Boots, from Manitobah, $240.

VINE ARTS | A new boutique liquor shop If you’re at the beginning of your wine and spirits journey, you may feel a little intimidated. Especially walking into a seemingly bougie shop. Although founded by passionate wine connoisseurs, Vine Arts is designed to be a destination for those who appreciate or want to learn more about the craft and culture of wine. “We’ve had a lot of success getting hold of young professionals while they’re starting their wine journey and then growing with them,” says co-owner Jeff Jamieson. “And there’s a lot of that here in Westmount.” Jeff Jamieson and Jesse Willis opened their first location in Calgary in 2012 and have long wanted to join the Edmonton scene. “We were pretty picky about the neighbourhoods we wanted to be in,” says Jeff, expressing how welcomed they immediately felt when joining 124 Street in September. One of Vine Arts’ defining features is its diverse and eclectic wine selection, helpfully categorized to give you a sense of what to expect. From “crisp and refreshing” to “bold and structured” to “weird, wacky, wonderful,” the store caters to both seasoned oenophiles and curious newcomers. According to Jeff, this Edmonton location holds the most products than any of their other stores, including more well-stocked beer fridges. And it will evolve over time as the general manager gets to know the likes and curiosities of the local clientele. Vine Arts: 10961–124 St. | 587-735-2372 | vinearts.ca

MANITOBAH | Indigenous-owned and internationally acclaimed Founded by Métis entrepreneur Sean McCormick, this Indigenous-owned brand has woven together heritage, community support, and sustainable practices to create a line of footwear that not only showcases Indigenous artistry but also fosters economic opportunities for Indigenous communities. The company’s name, Manitobah, pays homage to the province where his vision first took shape in 1997. From the start, Manitobah focused on creating footwear that seamlessly blended Indigenous craftsmanship with modern design. Their signature mukluks, inspired by the distinctive silhouette and beadwork of traditional footwear worn by Indigenous communities for centuries, became a symbol of cultural pride and artisanal excellence. Each Manitobah pair combines traditional materials like suede and rabbit fur with modern features for comfort and style. The brand also offers a selection of accessories, including mitts, scarves, and bags, featuring traditional Indigenous designs. The specialized Indigenous Market features handmade works by talented Indigenous artisans, from moccasins and mitts to beaded earrings, with 100% of all proceeds returning to the artists. Over the years, Manitobah mukluks have gained international acclaim and expanded the brand’s reach beyond Canada, raising awareness of Indigenous cultures and traditions. The West Edmonton Mall location opened in 2022 and is a testament to the brand’s remarkable journey. Manitobah: West Edmonton Mall, 8882–170 St. #R213 | 825-480-1801 | manitobah.ca

A TASTE OF THE

Holidays TRADITIONAL DISHES FROM

AROUND THE WORLD As the holiday season approaches, our taste buds eagerly anticipate the delightful array of dishes that grace our tables. Across cultures and continents, families gather to celebrate with traditional dishes that reflect their heritage and history. Let’s embark on a culinary journey to discover the rich tapestry of diverse holiday dishes that make this season truly extraordinary.

Christmas Tamales (Mexico) In Mexico, Christmas is synonymous with tamales. These bundles of joy are made by spreading masa (corn dough) on a corn husk, filling it with a mixture of meats, cheeses, and/or vegetables, and then steaming it to perfection. The process of making tamales often involves several family members coming together, transforming cooking into a bonding experience.

Bûche de Noël (France) The French have a penchant for elegance even in their holiday desserts. Bûche de Noël, or Yule log, is a beautiful rolled sponge cake shaped to resemble a tree log, often adorned with chocolate bark and marzipan mushrooms. This exquisite treat, made only during the holiday season, pays homage to the ancient tradition of burning a log in the fireplace during the winter solstice.

Latkes (Italy/Poland) Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with a delightful array of fried foods, signifying the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. After Italian latkes were introduced to Jewish people in northern Italy and potatoes became essential in Poland during the mid-1800s, the iconic potato pancake— fried to a crisp perfection—gained popularity as a beloved Hanukkah dish. Traditionally served with applesauce or sour cream, these treats are a symbol of the joyous holiday spirit.

Jollof Rice (West Africa) A beloved West African staple, jollof rice transcends cultural boundaries and graces holiday tables with its vibrant colours and bold flavours. This aromatic dish features rice cooked in a rich tomato-based sauce infused with spices like curry, cayenne pepper, and paprika, and is a testament to the rich diversity of Africa, as it takes on unique variations across regions and households. Whether it’s the smoky and spicy Nigerian jollof, the sweeter Ghanaian version, or the subtly spiced Senegalese jollof, this dish tells stories of heritage, tradition, and unity.

ove is why former Alberta Artist-in-Residence Aeris Osbourne paints. Love was why she moved to Alberta, marrying her husband in 2007 and settling in Edmonton to start a family. Love is also why she depicts Alberta’s heritage sites and buildings with vibrancy. Her signature use of lively hues of pinks and purples and her lush brushwork demonstrate her passion not only for her work, but for her community, and her latest series, Alberta Old Buildings, uses it to showcase her love of Alberta and its natural wonder. Once an avid international traveller, Aeris set her sights on travelling through Alberta and documenting its exuberant natural beauty and heritage. “Heritage buildings are the soul and connection of Albertan culture,” she explains. That’s why, beginning in 2022 as Alberta’s third provincial artist-inresidence, she travelled over 3600 km to research and visit the 10 important sites she depicts in Alberta Old Buildings.

SNOWSHOEING101

Snowshoeing is one of the oldest forms of winter travel, with a history dating back over 6000 years. Indigenous Peoples in what is now North America were among the first to develop and use snowshoes for practical transportation and hunting in snowy regions. Now, many people do it for fun!

1. Choose the Right Snowshoes

2. Dress in Layers

Selecting the appropriate snowshoes is crucial. They come in various sizes and styles, each designed for different terrains and snow conditions. Whether renting or buying, you’ll want to ask which conditions your equipment is best for and make sure they align with your upcoming adventure.

The best way to have a great experience is to feel and stay comfortable. Since the temperature can change quickly in winter, you’ll want to master the art of layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, add an insulating layer for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer shell to protect against the elements. For footwear, choose waterproof, insulated boots, preferably a size larger than your regular shoe size to accommodate thicker socks comfortably.

Where to Shop

TO BUY: Breathe Outdoors | 10951–170 St. | breatheoutdoors.ca TO BUY: United Sport | 7620 Gateway Blvd. | unitedsport.ca TO RENT/BUY: Totem Outdoor Outfitters | 7430–99 St. | totemoutfitters.ca TO RENT: River Valley Adventure Co. | 9731 Grierson Hill. | rivervalleyadventure.com 32

3. Pack Your Essentials

These include items like water, snacks, a map, a compass or GPS device (depending on how hardcore you wanna go), a headlamp, and a first-aid kit in your backpack. You’ll also want to

In fact, one of the best ways to experience the magic of winter in Edmonton is by snowshoeing, espeically in the picturesque river valley. This expansive natural area offers a serene and snowy landscape just waiting to be explored. Are you ready to experience the joys of snowshoeing? Let’s get ready!

| at tractions | carry a camera and/or phone that doesn’t die in the cold so you can capture your adventures!

4. Plan Your Route

Because snowshoes work best where regular walking shoes don’t, you’ll want to find a route less travelled. It’s permissible in any City of Edmonton park, and some local favourites include John Janzen Nature Centre (7000–143 St.), Rundle Park (29 St. & 113 Ave.), and Mill Woods Park (2730–66 St.). If you’re new to snowshoeing, start with short, flat trails to build confidence and get accustomed to the equipment and techniques. You can even schedule a snowshoe tour with knowledgeable guides from River Valley Adventure Co. (for min. 4 people).

PRO TIP: Be a good sport by never snowshoeing on cross-country ski tracks. 5. Learn Proper Techniques Before hitting the trails, take some time to learn basic snowshoeing techniques. Practice walking, climbing, and descending hills in a safe environment.

INFO EDMONTON MAGAZINE

a) Maintain a slightly

wider stance than your natural walking gait to prevent the snowshoes from hitting each other. Take small, deliberate steps and lean forward slightly to maintain balance.

b) When ascending a hill, use the toe crampons for grip.

c) When going downhill, lean back slightly and use the heel crampons.

d) To make turns, use poles for balance. Practice making gradual turns by shifting your weight from one snowshoe to the other.

6. And Most Importantly:

Take it at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful winter landscapes at your own comfort level! There’s much beauty and adventure to behold out there.
