EVENT PROGRAM PROGRAMME DE L’ÉVÉNEMENT

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE 2021 WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FINALS IN EDMONTON. BONJOUR ET BIENVENUE EN FINALE DE SÉRIE MONDIALE DE TRIATHLON 2021 À EDMONTON. We are delighted to be able to bring the triathlon family together in this great city once again this year, somewhere that has become synonymous with our sport since hosting its first World Championship back in 2001. Over the past 20 years, World Triathlon and Edmonton have been working together side by side to deliver some of the most memorable races at the highest level of our sport. It is therefore fitting that this will be the stage on which our 2021 World Champions are crowned, after two decades of collaboration. Much has happened in more recent times that has brought significant challenges to the landscape of international sport. Even the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games faced major obstacles, so it is with pride and gratitude that our partners in Edmonton are able to put this most prestigious event on the calendar. The ability to prepare for—and adapt to—ever-changing conditions is the hallmark of a great triathlete, and it has certainly been true of hosting international sport as well over the past 18 months. That will also contribute to the sense of celebration and occasion in Edmonton, as will the presence of many of the faces that made our three recent Olympic events so special. Our new champions, medallists, and competitors alike will want to remind the world of their achievements in Japan, and those who did not have the opportunity to race in Tokyo will look forward to putting themselves right up against them. Triathlon Canada was of course very well represented in Japan, and the importance of this country’s chapter in the history of our sport cannot be understated. From the very first top-tier races held here, the LOC and National Federation have determinedly built upon the

opportunities that hosting such prestigious races brings. We have seen mixed relays wow the crowds, our paratriathletes deliver greatness, and the elites produce the kinds of entertainment that have been the cornerstone of our sport’s ever-growing appeal. We may not be able to hold the full calendar that was originally planned for the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals Edmonton, but we will see the world’s best crowned once more at the U23 and Elite levels, inspiring the thousands of global Age-Group athletes who, in another time, would have also been able to race on this beautiful course. Good luck to all the athletes here, from the U23 and elites to those taking part in the community races on Sunday. The set-up in Hawrelak Park is another truly stunning location for this year’s Championship Finals, and I would like to extend my enormous gratitude to the City of Edmonton, the Local Organising Committee and Triathlon Canada, and all of the volunteers and World Triathlon staff for staging what I’m sure will be another fantastic World Triathlon event. Yours in sport,

Marisol Casado

MESSAGE FROM HONOURABLE RON ORR MINISTER OF CULTURE UN MESSAGE DE LA PART DE L’HONORABLE RON ORR MINISTRE DE LA CULTURE It’s been a long time coming; now it’s here. The 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals have arrived in Edmonton. We’re delighted to welcome athletes from around the world to our province and its picturesque capital city. In what will undoubtedly be an event to remember, we hope your experience in Edmonton is enjoyable — and successful. Beyond the scenery, you’ll find that Albertans are friendly and hospitable. May your experiences away from competition be every bit as gratifying as those during your event. Returning to sport has been daunting in some cases, but as we return to normal here in Alberta, we hope the presence of fans in the grandstand

and their cheering along the course will be an added boost to your competitive drive. In the spirit of making this the best summer ever, we are thankful to the World Triathlon Series Edmonton organizers for balancing spectator and athlete safety with the thrill of attending this live sporting event. For those of you competing, I commend you on your dedication and tireless effort. DEAR COMPETITORS AND SPECTATORS: CHERS COMPÉTITEURS ET COMPÉTITRICES, SPECTATEURS ET SPECTATRICES : On behalf of everyone in the Triathlon Canada Nation, I would like to welcome you back to one of the most prestigious triathlon venues in the country for the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals. It is a pleasure to have the international triathlon community back to the City of Edmonton — a place renowned for hosting world-leading triathlon events. Held on the heels of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the 2021 event will also celebrate the accomplishments of our sport’s greatest who demonstrated true grit, resilience, and excellence on the greatest sporting stage in the world in Tokyo. Edmonton is no stranger to hosting the biggest triathlon event outside of the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Having staged triathlon events at all levels for nearly two decades, the City of Edmonton has already hosted the World Championship in 2014 and 2001. In what has been an annual stop on World Triathlon’s calendar, Edmonton has done some heavy lifting for the growth of our sport in Canada, which will be on display this week. One of two stops on the international triathlon calendar, the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Edmonton is an important event for all of us to safely reconnect following the global pandemic through a drive to defy our limits, and a shared passion for the simple acts of swimming, cycling, and running. From all of those in our community participating in the Splash & Dash, along with sprint and standard distance community events to many of our country’s best toeing the line in the U23, and elite individual races, Edmonton promises to deliver a safe return of our sport to Canada. This event promises to be another display of sportsmanship and competition regardless of the start line you are on, or the sideline you are cheering from. It is also a week that could not be possible without the gracious support of the corporate community, the tireless work of the

Local Organizing Committee, the City of Edmonton, Sport Canada, and the incredible volunteers and fans who have lined the streets of Edmonton in the past and who will be avidly watching online from around the world in appreciation of this endurance sport. In closing, I would like to thank our partners at the World Triathlon Edmonton for your commitment and leadership to take the necessary to steps to navigate the ongoing pandemic while bringing the best triathletes in the world to Canada. To all of the athletes joining us, I wish you the very best of luck! One leaf. Three sports. No limits.

CANADIAN ATHLETE PROFILES PROFILS D’ATHLÈTES CANADIENS MATTHEW SHARPE Matthew Sharpe was born July 24, 1991, in Campbell River, British Columbia. He was first introduced to the triathlon community at the age of nine years old. He immediately fell in love with the sport and dedicated many years to become one of Canada’s top male triathletes. He experienced early success, winning the 2010 Canadian Junior Championships, and placed ninth at the 2010 World Junior Championship. Matthew was a member of the National Development team for five years but unfortunately lost his national team ranking while dealing with significant overuse injuries. While recovering he focused on managing his training load better, which allowed him to make a strong comeback and avoid further injury. In 2016, Matthew Sharpe landed his first World Cup Podium taking home silver in Montreal. He continued with a career-best finish ranking 11th at the World Triathlon Series Edmonton and competed in his first elite ITU Grand Final. Matthew made his Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020 before travelling back to Edmonton for the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals.

KRISTIAN BLUMMENFELT Kristian Blummenfelt was born February 14, 1994, in Bergen, Norway. He is one of the top leading international triathletes competing in the World Triathlon Series. Kristian originally came from a swimming background but was also one of Norway’s best junior distance runners. His first significant success in triathlon was in 2015 at the European Championships, where he took home bronze. He established himself in the triathlon community by winning multiple World Cup races, World Triathlon Series races and representing Norway in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Recently, Kristian had an outstanding performance in the Tokyo Olympics, taking home a gold medal. Not only did Kristian solidify a gold medal at the Olympics, but he is a top contender for the World Triathlon Series Champion. Kristian has the chance to win it all in the same year: Olympic Champion and the World Triathlon Series Champion. Kristian continues to push the field, elevate the competition, and we are thrilled to have him in Edmonton this August.

CANADIAN ATHLETE PROFILES PROFILS D’ATHLÈTES CANADIENS FLORA DUFFY Flora Duffy was born September 30, 1987, in Paget Parish, Bermuda. Flora started competing in triathlon at the young age of seven years old and has grown into an experienced, well-decorated athlete who has collected many podium finishes. Flora doesn’t limit herself to competing in just the World Triathlon Series. She has competed in the Commonwealth Games, XTERRA Triathlon, and World Cross Triathlon, where she continues to take home first place. She represented Bermuda at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic games and won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Flora won World Titles in 2016 and 2017, but her season was cut short in 2018 due to a foot injury. Her most recent significant performance was at the Tokyo Olympics, where she broke away from the rest of the pack securing a well-deserved gold medal. Flora Duffy continues to challenge her competition, pushing the pace and elevating the standard at every race. We are thrilled to have the Olympic Champion competing in Edmonton for the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series title.

DOROTHY WONG: REBORN TRIATHLETE Born and raised in Edmonton, Dorothy swam competitively in high school and fell in love with the sport. After graduation, she joined a master swim team to continue her training as an adult. Still feeling the need for a challenge, Dorothy registered for her first triathlon in 1999 and competed in a variety of events including the ITU race in Edmonton, racing sprint distances. Her passion for triathlon was put on hold as she raised a family, but Dorothy always missed the sport and was eager to get back to training, and the opportunity arose in 2021 when she joined the World Triathlon Edmonton Corporate Program. Hosted by Olympian and local Edmonton triathlete Paula Findlay, the program offered Dorothy regular workouts and coaching and gave her the confidence to get back out on the racecourse after more than a decade away from it. Now Dorothy is excited to race at the World Triathlon Edmonton Community Race on Sunday, August 22, and feel the accomplishment of competing, resolving to continue her training post-event to stay with a sport she’s loved for more than 20 years.
