2017 is off to a fantastic start with the February 18 Rebel Energy Services Xtreme Bulls event in Red Deer and the Chad Besplug Invitational bull riding in Claresholm a week later. Chad Besplug officially announced his retirement from bull riding competition. Congratulations on a very impressive career. The Claresholm event also marked the kickoff of the fundraising efforts for the Ty Pozzobon Foundation, which is an organization with the goal to “protect and support the health and well-being of rodeo competitors inside and outside of the arena.” Visit TyPozzobon.com for more info. In March I was privileged to attend the final performance of the Small Spurs rodeo season. Judging by what I witnessed, the future of rodeo is alive and well in the hearts of our young people! I have been travelling up and down Hwy 2 to Edmonton over the past few weeks and planning for CFR 44 is well underway. The incredible partnership with Northlands and FarmFair International has been made even stronger with the addition of another partner, AgriTrade out of Red Deer. I hope everyone will join us November 8-12, 2017, at Northlands Coliseum to once again be part of our 44 years of heritage and tradition! Thanks to all who attended the AGM in February. I’d like to welcome new CPRA President Terry Cooke to the Board of Directors and look forward to working with him going forward. NEW K-DAYS RODEO, EDMONTON Northlands is launching their CPRA-approved K-Days Summer Rodeo this July and it will be the richest oneheader rodeo in North America. Professional rodeo athletes from across Canada and the United States will compete for their share of a $400,000 purse over the course of this exciting three-day event. “Northlands is proud to showcase our region’s western heritage with the addition of a summer rodeo to K-Days,” said Tim Reid, President and CEO for Northlands. “Rural and urban audiences alike will get
a chance to enjoy world class rodeo action as a part of their K-Days gate admission.” Northlands has been home to the Canadian Finals Rodeo for 43 years and monies won at K-Days Rodeo counts towards qualifying for the CFR in November, 2017. Albert Laye passed away Dec. 4 at the age of 96. Born in Walsh, Alta., Albert was in the top five of Canada in the bull riding, steer riding and all around standings from 1949 to 1951. In 1952 Albert competed in tie-down roping and steer wrestling and was consistently in the standings until he retired from rodeo. In 2008, Albert was honoured by the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame as a Legend of Rodeo.
Cam was one of the founding members of the Cowboys Protective Association in 1944 and in 1950 earned the CPA Saddle Bronc Riding Championship title. He later served as the Saddle Bronc Director. Cam was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1990.
Born near Ponoka, Alta., the renowned “Duke of the Chutes” rodeo stock contractor Harry Vold’s legion of awards included 11-time PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year and Honorary Sarcee Tribal Chief. He was inducted into nine rodeo Halls of Fame, including the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
A well-known trainer and competitor, Ruth was a dominant force in barrel racing in the 1980s. Over an eight-year span, she won five Canadian titles, finished second in Canada the other three years. In 1986 she won Calgary Stampede and competed at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. In 2009, Ruth was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

TY POZZOBON FOUNDATION In February, family and friends close to the late bull rider, Ty Pozzobon, announced the Ty Pozzobon Foundation (TPF). “We knew we wanted to all do something for Ty in his name to make a positive change in our sport,” said Pozzobon’s best friend, Tanner Byrne, a spokesman for the Foundation. “A focus of Ty’s Foundation is to work with our youth and our athletes on concussion awareness and the affects they have. We want anyone dealing with anxiety or depression to have somewhere to go, someone to talk to and a way for them to reach out to us for help to get the proper care and education they need. “Ty loved people; this is our way of still doing that for him.” “Our first announcement with the Ty Pozzobon Foundation is a commitment to provide care by the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team at every PBR Canada event in 2017,” Byrne said. This announcement marks the first time ever that the PBR in Canada has enjoyed the presence in some form of the CPRSMT at every single event throughout a single season. Garrett Green riding Pound the Alarm for 91 points in the short go
a heart-in-the-throat contest between a bullfighter and a bull who are awarded points for agility, aggression, creativity, quickness and difficulty. Weston Rutkowski collected his first win of the 2017 Bullfighters Only season at Alpha Bull’s Chad Besplug Invitational. Rutkowski scored 83 points against Gringo Bulls #23 Slam Dunk to claim the BFO Claresholm title. Event producer, Chad Besplug, formally announced his retirement during the event. Besplug sports two Canadian Bull Riding championship buckles (2011 and 2013) plus he won $100,000 at the Calgary Stampede and was a PBR World finalist. He will now concentrate his efforts on his Alpha Bull production company and staging bull riding events across the West.

Congratulations to bull rider Garrett Green, who won the fourth annual Chad Besplug Invitational Bull Riding in Claresholm, Alta. “After the last two years, this is one I really wanted to win,” says Garrett Green, the three-time CFR qualifier and winner of the 2017 Besplug Invitational. The Meeting Creek, Alta., cowboy had finished third at the last two editions. He rode Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls’ Pound the Alarm to a spectacular 91 points and 175.5 on two head to claim the victory. cowboycountrymagazine.com
“I’d seen Pound the Alarm on television a few times and figured he would fit my style,” says Green. “And tonight, he was exactly what I thought he’d be and what I hoped for.” I changed my approach this year,” says Green. “This winter, I’ve been lifting weights and doing yoga. And the difference is, I feel tremendously confident coming to events like this knowing how well prepared I am physically.” Green split the long round with defending Besplug Invitational champion, Brock Radford. For Green, the only man to make a qualified ride in the championship round, the win was worth $4,872. Added to the drama of bull riding itself was a Bullfighters Only competition —
Moments after Jordan Hansen won his first Canadian bull riding title at last year’s Canadian Finals Rodeo, he announced that his next goal was a spot at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. “I close my eyes and I see those yellow chutes,” he proclaimed. “I want to be part of that.” The Okotoks, Alta., cowboy took another step toward realizing that dream when he won the Rebel Energy Services Bull Riding event in Red Deer. The CPRA event was also an Xtreme Bulls event, the first Canadian bull riding to receive that PRCA distinction. Hansen noted that he couldn’t have hand-picked two better bulls than what he drew in Red Deer. “I had Too Dark 2 C in the long go,” Hansen recalled. “Then I had X6 Ranch’s Jesus N Bocephus in the short round. I rode him at Oyen last year so I knew what to expect.” For Hansen the $3,250 payday coupled with a tidy $2,412 cheque for a 4/5/6 split at San Angelo, Tex., vaulted the talented 23-year-old into the top 10 in the World standings. c

HAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A “COMING OUT PARTY” FOR PRO RODEO CANADA ROOKIE BARREL RACER, COLBY GILBERT AT LAST YEAR’S CFR,
INSTEAD TURNED INTO A SCENE FROM A HORROR FLICK IN WHICH SHE HAD A BIT PART AS AN UNSUSPECTING VICTIM OF THE MOVIE’S STAR SLASHER.

“My head just wasn’t in the game,” confides Gilbert, who didn’t place in any of the six rounds of the Canadian Finals Rodeo last November at Northlands Coliseum. “I’m not sure how to explain it. It was like I wasn’t even there.” It wasn’t a sudden lack of ability or a bout of nervousness on the big stage that derailed Gilbert’s expectations of a top five finish in Edmonton. Her fate was sealed two weeks before the Finals with an unthinkable mishap. “The stud I’d been riding (Rodeo) was at my mom’s place getting ready for the CFR,” begins Gilbert, who was in Lethbridge at nursing school. “My mom called and said he’d tried jumping a barbed wire fence and his blanket got caught on a post.” “Somehow, he ended up with a hematoma around his abdomen. My mom rushed him to the vet in Saskatoon and they performed surgery about a week before CFR but he didn’t survive. It was heartbreaking.” The eight-year-old stud burst on to the pro rodeo scene about mid-June picking up the slack from a six-year-old mare named Famous, which Gilbert used early in the 2016 season to win close to $5,000 by early June. Both horses were loaned to the Maple Creek, Sask., cowgirl by the same owner. “They were both talented horses,” suggests Gilbert, who won $15,486 last season to win the Canadian Pro Rodeo Association barrel racing rookie of the year award. “I was shocked at how well they worked. I never imagined I would make the CFR. I was really privileged to be able to ride them.” “After Rodeo’s accident, my confidence was shaken. All I could think about was how could we get so unlucky after all the momentum we had. To be honest, I wasn’t even interested in going to the CFR. It was one of the worst things I’ve experienced.” But, buoyed by an outpouring of support from across North America through phone calls, texts, emails and social media, and with the loan of horses from her mom and traveling partner, Chelsea Moore, Gilbert made the trip to Edmonton to compete at the Finals. “The horses worked well, there was just a lot of inconsistency all week,” said Gilbert with a sigh, who won the Canadian Cowboys Association barrel racing championship as a rookie in 2014. “It was a big letdown. It still doesn’t feel real.” Gilbert will use Mona, a six-year-old bought from her mom, to start the 2017 pro rodeo campaign on her journey back to the CFR. CALGARY STAMPEDE NOVICE EVENTS SADDLE BRONC RIDING & BAREBACK RIDING Each event will have two Go-Rounds (back to back) and Finals. Contestants must hold a current Amateur Rodeo, High School Rodeo or Collegiate Rodeo Card or a Pro permit. Contestants for the Novice Saddle Bronc Riding & Novice Bareback Riding must be at least 16 years of age on January 1, 2017 and under 21 years of age on December 31, 2016

JUNIOR STEER RIDING Steer Riding will be split into two tiers, based on level of experience, each tier will have one Go-Round and Finals. Contestants must hold a current Amateur Rodeo, High School Rodeo Card or a Pro permit. Contestants for the Junior Steer Riding must be at least 12 years of age on January 1, 2017 and under 15 years of age on December 31, 2016. Helmets and protective vests are mandatory.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Regardless of age, there is a minimum standard that each contestant (NSB, NBB, SR) must meet to be eligible to compete in the Stampede Rodeo. Each contestant must have a membership with a recognized rodeo association as noted above and provide proof of three qualified rides in a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Rodeo or four qualified rides at other recognized rodeo association(s). Each contestant must have their own gear.
