ART MIAMI 2016 Booth #D207

Introduction Tansey Contemporary is pleased to exhibit new works by the influential Italian glass artist Lino Tagliapietra at ART MIAMI 2016. Recognized internationally as the Maestro of contemporary glass and considered the “greatest glass blower of all time” by his peers, Lino Tagliapietra has been working with the material for over seventy years. Starting at the age of 11 as an apprentice on the island of Murano it was only a decade later, when he was working for some of the most prestigious glassworks companies in Murano, that he was given the title of Maestro. His breathtaking blown and fused glassworks demonstrate a stunning combination of technically complex production skills and an incredible creative mind. As both creator and executor of his works, he has developed a personal style that is unmistakable and easily recognized, and his exemplary practice is followed by many as a great source of inspiration. “Glass is a wonderful material. Why? Glass is alive. Even when it is cool it is still moving. It is connected with fire, it is connected with water, it is…my life”, Tagliapietra explains. Tansey Contemporary will exhibit spectacular new and diverse works from the artist representing fifteen different series including: Stromboli, Niomea, Ombelico, Fuji, Africa, Spirale, Dinosaur, Piccadilly, Masai, Aventurine, Clodia, Poesia, Endeavor and Kookaburra as well as a nine piece Borboletta Installation. Together the works showcase a wide selection of vibrant colors, unique graphic design, and complex techniques demonstrating that even in his 80s, Tagliapietra continues to push the boundaries of his ever-evolving glass practice. “Lino, to us, is the ultimate representation of the artist-craftsman and what our gallery program strives to showcase: the intersection between craft, fine art and design. He truly embodies the wonderful, dynamic interaction that is possible when an artist has truly mastered the materials and techniques they choose to employ in their artistic expression,” Jen Tansey, Gallery Owner/Director, explains. Tagliapietra’s work is featured in numerous museum collections throughout the world, including the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, The De Young Museum in San Franscisco, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, and many more.

Lino Tagliapietra BIOGRAPHY

Tagliapietra is an influential Italian glass artist and master glassmaker who is recognized for his skills and talents throughout the world. Born on the island of Murano, neighbouring Venice in the Venetian Lagoon, the artist started from a very young age working at the island’s glass furnaces and factories. Lino was soon regarded as a Maestro (master glass blower) in his early 20’s and granted with that title in the 1950’s, at a time when he worked for some of the most prestigious glassworks companies in Murano. During the 1960’s Lino started expressing his own forms of creativity through the design and execution of models with high technical and aesthetic quality, which earned him significant commercial success. Since 1990 Lino has become a free practicing artist of glass fully dedicated to creating his unique pieces that are present in some of the most prestigious museums throughout the world, including the De Young Museum of San Franscisco, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, as well as numerous galleries and private collections. Through his continued creative experimentation and mastered skills, Lino has developed a very personal style that is unmistakable and easily recognized, thus his exemplary practice is followed by many as a great source of inspiration. One of the most profound influences on Lino’s art forms was his participation in La Scuola Internazionale del Vetro symposia, held in Murano in the 1970s, which brought the finest Muranese masters together with artists from other disciplines around the world. Also impactful was Tagliapietra’s collaboration with the Dutch glass designer A.D. Copier. Since his first United States visit in 1979 at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA, teaching and collaboration have defined the artist and served as a source of inspiration for his own work. He has led workshops and taught in glass programs worldwide including the Haystack School of Crafts, Deer Isle, ME, the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, the Toyama Art School, Toyama, Japan, University of Sydney, Australia, Centre College, Danville, KY, Centre Internationel de Recherche sur le Verre, Marseille, France, and the MIT Glass Lab, Cambridge, MA. Both creator and executor of his works, his creativity is upheld by production skills that come from a life of experience; and it is through that wealth that he continually explores the possibilities of a perfect execution. This is further enhanced by his personal experiences, encounters and exchanges, as well as a wide variety of different interests, where the glass however always takes first place priority.
