HELLO.

This portfolio is a collection of selected works accomplished by me during my five years in Gateway College of Architecture and Design, Sonipat. All works are done by me and upto my full knowledge, all team works have been credited. The Creation of Adam is a fresco painting by Italian artist Michelangelo, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, painted between 1508–1512. It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man. This painting metaphorically symbolizes that when the powers of divine and efforts of man are put together, it gives birth to creations. The cover page of this portfolio adapts the hands of God and Adam’s and symbolizes the aforesaid idea. I like to travel and explore places and meanwhile I like to capture the essence of the place through my camera. These kind off assist me in my design process and help creating a first visual of the design project to be done. In short,my photographs help me out in shaping my designs. Likewise, this portfolio also introduces each project with a photograph clicked by me at different places to set the theme for the project. All photos in this portfolio are clicked by me.

Being visually impaired or blind is a stigma in India, and these people are not included in the public sphere or have social support. It became abundantly clear to me during my visits to some renowned blind institutions in Delhi, such as the Blind Relief Association (BRA), the National Federation for the Blind (NFB), and some NGO’s blind hostels, that buildings that are accessible to people who are blind are almost never designed. Due to the limited funding available to these organizations, it is standard practice to purchase a plot of land and a building, regardless of whether they are accessible to those who are blind and convert them into schools and hostels for the disabled. This process reinforced my belief to resolve and educate those who are blind.

The table above lists the environmental cues a visually impaired or blind individual sense from the surrounding built and open space and which sensory stimulus helps in perceiving them (other than visual sense). This data is based on literature studies and confirmed by interviews conducted of blind and visually impaired individuals. This helped design and craft meaningful spaces for blind and visually impaired users of the project.

Chhoti Sabzi Mandi existed from a long time. This area used to be central fruit and vegetable market within the site. Fresh fruits and vegetables were brought from the Regional Subzi mandi in Tilak Nagar. But due to commercialization of the market, and rise of electrical, and real estate market, this area was encroached by shops and small offices during 1990’s. This forced the fruit and vegetable vendors to move out of their place and sell teir stuff in the residential pockets and lanes. This depletion of this mandi is a major issue which affects the residents and the vendors in some or the other way. The vendors who were setting up there carts earlier are now roaming in the residential pockets in the scorching heat to sell their fruits and vegetable.

Historical Evolution

Existing Situation

This area was initially used as a local subzi mandi during 1980’s. The vegetables came from the regional mandi (Tilak Nagar). At that time commercial shops and settlements were not prominent in this area. Only prominent Gurudwara (Guru Singh Sabha) and some residential areas were peresent. Over the course of time, with introduction of commercial shops (Electronic shops, real estate brokers, general stores etc.), the area of the mandi reduced considerably.

Fruits and vegetables are brought in from regional mandi early in the morning. All the vegetable and fruit vendors set up their carts and stalls in the vicinity after buying stock from bigger vendors. But the retail shops tend to open by 10AM, after which the stalls and carts in the interior have to move out. After 10 AM only few carts and stall are settled on the footpath. Existing pattern of the fruit and vegetable vendors is very erratic. They move out in different areas as per their convenience and will into various residential pockets and gated societies. They then sell their stuff personally at doorsteps. But due to mobility issues, they cannot carry large quantities at a time. They carry variety of vegetables in small quantities on their carts. They disperse in various areas into various residential pockets and gated societies.

Stakeholder Inter-relation

Observations

Various morning activities happen at Chhoti Sabzi mandi which involves many stakeholders. Primary Stakeholders include fruit and vegetable vendors, newspaper distributions, and dairy product vendors. They operate during the early hours of the day, until the retail shops open. Customers directly come to buy fruits and vegetables. After 10 A.M, mandi vendors are driven out of the space and they then roam and sell their goods on carts.

During the morning hours ( 5 A.M -6 AM), the newspaper sorting starts at the marketplace. At that time, dairy products like paneer, milk etc come to the Dairy shops in mandi form places like Kosi Kalan (near Vriadavan) and Gwalpahari. These are freshly sold in this market to direct costumers. Fresh fruits and vegetable supplies are brought in from Regional Mandi (Tilak Nagar), which is then set up here. Sabji mandi functions till 10 AM. After this, retail commercial shops of the complex start to open. They drive out the vendors from this place. They then sell their stuff personally at doorsteps. But due to mobility issues, they cannot carry large quantities at a time. They carry variety of vegetables in small quantities. 21
