Italian cities
A CITY WITHIN A CITY Site: Syracuse, NY Year: Fall 2013 Program: Supermarket, Offices, Retail Space, Residential Units + Parking A city is experienced through three primary modes of transportation: pedestrian walkways , streets and highways. Thus, using circulation as the guiding motive, a formal strategy of sliding bars is implemented to privilege three programs: retail, transportation and supermarket to create a complex inspired by the predominant highway system. The designed parcels of public spaces varying in different sizes connect the public life on the street to the public life possible at the creek. The role of transparency adds the inviting atmosphere.

D.C.A IN COLLABORATION WITH ISABEL CASTELLANO Site: Los Angeles, California Year: Spring 2015 Program: Teaching Kitchens, Broadcast Kitchen, Restaurant, Bakery +Administration Los Angeles presents a complex urban environment with a strong divide between the historic downtown and the new financial district. A culinary arts institute that mediates the divide was designed to create a smooth transition between work and leisure. The ribbons serve environmental, spatial and public functions and bring people in from the street to the courtyard. The result is a five story concrete building with a concrete truss pinned to two structural cores. Other than passive strategies, the building employs a forced air system to meet additional heating and cooling demands.

GALLERY BAZAAR Site: Syracuse, NY Year: Spring 2013 Program: Exhibition, Multimedia and Video Galleries, Auditorium, Administrative Area, Bookshop + Cafe Presently, the heart of the city lies alongside S Salina Street. To expand the downtown area with programmatic functions associated with a museum like galleries, auditoriums, bookshops, cafe and services, a module is proposed. A module allows flexibility of function as well as sets a precedent of economical architecture for other areas of the city that caters to local artisans and well known personalities. The blurred distinction between inside and outside like bazaars allows for larger public events that would serve the city.

CLADDING THE GIANT IN COLLABORATION WITH MARIEL MORA LLORENS Site: Florence, Italy Year: Spring 2014 Program: [Green] Facade Design “Cladding the Giant was a charrette competition that required participants to design a skin for exterior fire stairs at the Syracuse University Florence campus. Since the exterior fire stair had an incredible presence in the garden, a vertical garden was designed to create a skin that could breathe. Also, underutilized areas of the fire stair were identified to create more intimate gathering spaces for the students that primarily use the space. Special attention was paid in picking appropriate plant life for the vertical garden after considering climate and maintenance requirements.
