EDITORIAL The mystery and magic of love cannot be known by science and mind. Only a heart that is capable of total madness can glimpse the wondrous majesty of love. Love is not within the domain of reason or intellectual discussions. Love defies definition and yet there are more definitions on love than on any other subject. The enigma of love has enraptured the soul of man ever since he first peered into the vast limitless beyond. Love is love and cannot be stated by any other way. Nothing can define love. Love defines everything. It is because of love the stars whirl in their cosmic dance of creation. It is because of love the tiny ants carry food to their nest. The entire cosmos exists in love and for love. It is the expressions of love that manifest as the Creation. Mystics and poets have sought to give expressions of their insights of love only to become vehicles of love themselves. Love transforms and transmutes whoever seeks its shadows into love itself. To know love is to become love. Yet love can only be known by being love. Thus love is its own knowledge and knowledge is only knowledge when is becomes love otherwise it is mere intellectual gymnastics. This issue of Meditation Times highlights some of the many expressions of love by various mystics and poets. In this editorial I wish to quote verbatim from an extract by the chief editor from his upcoming book “LOTUS from the MOON.

L

ove is an energy that makes our hearts, yet our hearts cannot make that power. Love descends upon our souls by the will of God and not by

the demand or plea of the individual. Love opens the dimensions beyond the realm of intellect and offers no reason for its appearance and departure. One can either live in the misery of its submission and pine for its return, or celebrate the bitter sweet memories. Love is not within the domain of your control. In fact you cannot love. It is love that possesses you and carries you in its wild dance through the portal of beauty, truth and bliss. Only one of infinite trust can fathom the depths of this mystery of two souls pulsating as one orgasmic being. Love is oneness. Duality is the illusion of the mind that seeks to protect its ego by creating a separation, and then wandering aimlessly hither and thither; roaming for many lives to seek the lost beloved; all the time with the kohinoor (treasure of love) in the undiscovered sanctum of your heart. Once you realize that love is not a search but a happening. Then the miracle is that you were all the time in love but the screen of fear prevented you from feeling its presence. My work is to help remove this fear and love will reveal itself. Neelambar sings: Love is in the heart but the tongue is speechless.

Blossoming of inner beauty is Love

ove is the only scripture that God wrote. Indeed Love is the only scripture that is unwritten. God gave you this scripture as Unseen but Realized Truth. And one thing that God did is that He hid the entire scripture deep within you. The day you are capable to discover the seed of this scripture deep within your spiritual journey begins. However by

nature man seeks God all around and misses deep within. Even when his search somehow begins within he finds himself unable to decipher all that is written in this scripture. Nothing seems to be seen written yet still everything is written. But written in a different language! You have to learn the art of hearing the unheard and see the unseen. I reveal to you a few pages from

this ‘Eternal Scripture – Love’ that God has hidden deep within you. Beloved friends I love you. Love is my message. Love is my being. Love is the texture that has given the form and the shape to my being. Love is the communion. Love is oneness. Love is harmony both within and without. Love is bliss. Let it be your quality too. Love is my color and my climate. Love is the only religion that I gave for you. All else is just unnecessary and therefore can be discarded. All else is nothing but dreams. A mental game! Love is the only substantial thing in life! All else is illusion. Let love grow in you and then one day you will hear My footsteps. I will be growing on my own accord. If you miss love you will miss Me and all. Then life will be misery and despair. In a most sublime and sacred way the scripture reveals the secrets. There is no way to God without love says the scripture. There is nothing more sublime than love. God can be forgotten but not love. If love is remembered, God will happen as a consequence. It happens as a consequence. God is the fragrance of love and nothing else. In fact there is no God but only godliness. There is no person like God anywhere. Drop all childish attitudes. Never go on searching for a Father. Divineness is God is no more. Seek Me as and through Love. Love is My synonym. When I say divineness is, I mean whatsoever is, is full of God. The entire creation is full of godliness. Only you need eyes to see this. The green of the trees! And the red of the flowers and the golden glow of the rising sun all are divine. A crow crying and a bird on the wing, a child

giggling, and a dog barking all is divine. Nothing else exists. The moment you feel this Love attains a new meaning. Love then will give birth to real you. The moment you ask ‘where is God?’ you have raised a wrong question. Because God cannot be indicated anywhere! He is not in any particular direction. He is not a particular thing either. He is not a particular being. God is universality. God is totality. God is hidden in the entire creation. Ask where God is not? Only then you have asked the right question. One of the Hindu scriptures Isa Upanishad begins with a beautiful sutra. To say that it is Hindu scripture is erroneous. Truth is not Hindu or Muslim instead it is cosmic. It begins: ‘The entire cosmos is permeated by ever expanding consciousness or Isa referring to God. It is your realization now. And once you have realized this you can enjoy the fruits of the entire cosmos. Then the entire cosmos belongs to you and you belong to the whole.’ Such are the Secrets as contained in the Eternal Scripture. Therefore for that right question and understanding you will have to prepare the soil of your awareness. If you are not in love, or you have not yet being overwhelmed by the secrets of love then what can you know about God! Even you (the false identity) have no real existence. I was thinking what should I give to you today? Because this is the dawn of a new awakening when love springs forth from its deepest core!

What is the way to know the secrets of this scripture? You will have to begin this journey through introspection. Introspection is the first step. This is the process of going deep into your being. As the process continues you will realize that you are knocking at the door of meditation. From where did you get the idea that love and meditation are different polarities? Love and meditation are two wings of the being. It simply means you neither know what love is, nor do you know what meditation is. And without knowing you are disturbed by the question. To you, love and meditation seem to be opposite polarities. I wonder where you got that idea? If love and meditation are opposite polarities, then nothing in this world can be close to any other thing. But I know all the old religions have also been under the same misconception. The meditators have been escaping to the mountains to avoid love. And the lovers never bothered about meditation because they knew that if they meditated their love life would be finished. It has been one of the oldest fallacies humanity has lived with. Love is an overflowing silence, a joy, a peace, and blissfulness between two persons. But because there are two persons, sometimes they never match. Meditation is the same experience of silence and peace and bliss but alone. Even if two meditators are in love, then things come to the highest peak. If one meditator can reach to a certain peak in his blissfulness, or silence, two meditators who

love one another can become an immense support to each other’s transcendence into the unknown. Their love can become nourishment to their meditation, and vice – versa. Categorically I differ from all the religions of the past. They have made love and meditation polarities, parallel lines which meet nowhere. And if this happens then you will never be able to live this scripture of love. And unless to live it, your being will not blossom. A man of meditation is bound to understand love and know the art of immense love. All his anger is gone. Hate is gone. There is no more possessiveness. If he cannot love then who else can love? And a man of love can go deepest in meditation because love is our highest quality, our purest self, our perfect song. If two singing hearts cannot meet in deep meditation then no other meeting is possible. In fact, there is no need to escape to the mountains to meditate or learn the first lessons in love. Also in the whole world, people without meditation love each other. But their love does not bring bliss into their life. On the contrary, it creates hell. They are known as intimate enemies. Intimate enemies who have decided to live together. If love is the scripture god wrote for you, He also created the technique of meditation to feel, live, and explore the secrets of the scripture of Love. My own understanding is that as long as love and meditation are almost two sides of the same coin, we cannot create the new man, the new humanity, the new world.

Never say love and meditation are opposite polarities. This is a lie propagated by the priests down the ages. It has reduced lovers into miserable lives and meditators into juiceless deserts. I want your life to be a garden full of flowers, fruits, and juice. There is no question of how to create a loving, meditative relationship. People who gather around living buddha are already living. At least they are making an effort for the first time in the whole history of

man to bring love and meditation as two sides of the same experience. Why should love disturb your meditation? Indeed neither of the two can disturb one another the least. Love gives you the right atmosphere, and the right soil to meditate. And meditation gives you the right fragrance for love to become a treasure, a glory, and a benediction. Know this as the essence of the scripture of love.

Meera is a launching place for your pilgrimage. Her scripture is the scripture of love. Perhaps calling it scripture is not right. Take Narada’s BHAKTI SUTRAS – sutras of devotion – that is scripture. There one finds reasoning, method, fixed precepts. It is a system of devotion. Meera herself IS devotion. You won’t find systematic argument. Fixed logic is not found there. There lightning has struck the heart. In Meera, found nowhere else, is a natural expression of love. There have been other devotees, but they all pale before Meera; they become the background. Meera’s star is a very bright, shining star. Come, let us go toward this star. If just a few drops of Meera’s juice rain on your life, flowers will bloom in your desert. If in your heart just a few tears make rain clouds like Meera’s rain clouds, and in your heart a melody begins playing as it played to Meera, it is enough. One drop will colour you and make you new. So don’t listen to Meera logically, intellectually. Meera has nothing to do with logic and intellect. Listen to Meera with feeling, with devotion. Look with the eye of trust. Push aside logic, leave it to crawl along the bank. For a little while, let yourself go completely mad with Meera. This is the world of the mad. This is the world of lovers. Only then can you understand, otherwise you will miss. First, a few things about Meera. Meera’s love for Krishna did not begin with Meera. Such a rare expression of love cannot begin just like that. The story goes back. This Meera is one of the GOPIS – devotees – who was with Krishna. Meera herself has declared it, but the scholars can’t accept it, as there is no historical proof for it. I accept what Meera says. I am not interested in measuring true and false. To me it is pointless whether it is history or not. Meera’s statement – my agreement; when Meera herself says it, the matter is finished. The question does not arise of someone else raising further doubts about it. And those who raise doubts like this, they won’t ever be able to understand Meera. Meera says, “I was Lalita. I danced with Krishna in Vrindavan, I sang with Krishna. This love is ancient.” Meera insists, ”this love is not new.” And it entered Meera’s life in such a way that it is clear from the very beginning that the pundits were wrong and Meera was right. ove is the scripture that God wrote and hid deep with you. Man has forgotten love and continues to seek God yonder in the woods or books. Also he finds no correlation between love and God. On its own it is very difficult for anyone to experience the secrets of love. Where as in the company of someone who has discovered the secrets deep within the discovery becomes very easy. The master disciple commune is the easiest way to explore the secrets. As I take you into the inner realm of a mystic, Amir Khusro let me tell you something of his life. Hasan Yamīn al-Dīn Khusro or Abul hsn yaimn Al dIn ousrae

(1253-1325), is popularly known as Amīr Khusro Dehlawī (AmIr ousrae dehlvI). He is an Indian musician, scholar and a poet. He is also an iconic figure in the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent. A Sufi mystic and a spiritual disciple of Chistiya Sufi Sheikh Nizamuddin Auliya of New Delhi, Amīr Khusro is not only a notable poet but a prolific and seminal musician as well. His poetic compositions are primarily in Persian and in Hindi as well. He is been called the ‘father of qawwali’ (the devotional music of the Indian Sufis). He is also credited with enriching Hindustani classical music by introducing Persian and Arabic elements in it. He is the originator of the khayal and tarana styles of

music. The invention of tabla is also traditionally attributed to Amīr Khusro. Amir Khusro used only 11 metrical schemes with 35 distinct divisions. He has written Ghazal, Masnavi, Qata, Rubai, Do-Beti and Tarkibhand. A musician and a scholar, Amīr Khusro is as prolific in tender lyrics as in highly involved prose and could easily

emulate all styles of Persian poetry which had developed in medieval Persia, from Khāqānī’s forceful qasidas to Nezāmī’s khamsa. His contribution to the development of the ghazal, hitherto little used in India, is particularly significant. A Hindi composition of Amir Khusro:

By making me drink the wine from the distillery of love You've intoxicated me by just a glance; My fair, delicate wrists with green bangles in them, Have been held tightly by you with just a glance!

I give my life to you, Oh my cloth-dyer, You've dyed me in yourself, by just a glance. I give my whole life to you Oh, Nijam, You've made me your bride, by just a glance. Let me take you into the original composition. It is significant in many ways as it indicates the love of Amir Khusro for his master Sheikh Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Amir Khusro loved his master dearly. It was said that without Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Amir Khusro will not survive. It happened that Amir Khusro had gone with his caravan on business. In his absence Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya attained fanahiyat and left the physical body. However before leaving he instructed that Amir should not be told of his demise as Amir will not be able to bear this. When Amir came back he enquired about the master. Through Kasf he knew but no one was telling him anything. As he came to spot where Hazrat Nizamuddin was enshrined he confirmed that from here he is getting the smell of his master. Saying this Amir circled around the shrine and recited this couplet and left his body that very moment. Later one of the caliph dreamt that the master sheikh said anyone visiting his shrine will have to visit the shrine of Amir Khusro first before doing Fatah at my shrine. The Fatah of the visitor will be accepted by me only if he offers Fatah at the shrine of Amir Khusro first. It is a tradition since then anyone visiting the shrine complex will have to offer Fatah at Amir Khusro shrine first.

gaerI saeve sej pr muo pe dare kez cl ousrae xr Apne rEn _a$ chu< dez. The couplet meant. The beautiful lady is sleeping on her couch with forelock covering the face. Khusro return home. Now is the time as the darkness of night surrounds. This couplet signifies the intensity of love that Amir had for his master. Love is oneness. This is nothing more unifying force that love. Love is an unseen but realized truth. Love is not function of biology. Instead it is the realization at the deepest core of your being. Love is soul’s search for the answering soul. When one reaches to this level of love, all boundaries disappear. There is just oneness beyond all finiteness. There may be two separate bodies but there is one heart pulsating deep within. Only is such a state the flower of the being begins to open. Love is oneness. Beyond all duality! It is unseen but realized truth! Love’s harmony manifests in the outer world and surrounds your being. Allow love to enchant your being. gaerI saeve sej pr muo pe dare kez cl ousrae xr Apne rEn _a$ chu< dez. Only this much for now!

Going beyond togetherness

H

uman relationship is very delicate phenomena. Each relationship is the way for the continuation of soul’s journey. Evolving out of the womb of the unconscious and subconscious (past) it journeys towards fruition. However all that happens in this process actually happens this very moment. This requires awareness, and understanding of many things. In the process of its journey

each individual gets lost and fruition never happens. The pain or pleasure remains the outcome. Transcendence beyond these requires awareness. And unless transcendence happens one cannot really understand the purpose of relationship. For the purpose of understanding I divide relationships into two categories.

1. Static or Blood relationships This relationship is Static in nature. This is also known as Blood – relationship. This does not evolve. Your father, mother, brother, sister, and children remain the same. As a result the nature of such relationship does not envisage too many variations and changes. 2. Dynamic or Relationships

Self

Chosen

Particularly I am referring to ‘Self – Chosen’ relationships. This category includes male – female relationship within the parameter of marriage or where sex is also involved. Such relations are self chosen. In this category also comes friendship as this is self – chosen. This type of relationship I call Dynamic Relationship. The growth depends on your awareness. From awareness evolves your understanding. Your mind, dogmas, belief patterns etc come to play dominant role. The basis of each relationship is love and its understanding. Love remains nonchalant in static relationship. Things are taken for granted. Nature of love never changes. However in the dynamic relationship love undergoes through various stages. It begins from the gross and aspires to attain fruition. In fact dynamic relationship is the journey of transcendence of love from baser to the precious. It is journey from the worldly love to love divine. At its peak love becomes friendliness or the quality of your being. Then it does not remain relationship anymore.

It is this aspect of the relationship that is the concern of humanity. This relationship is significant in many ways. It is not based on blood. Yet still it is the basis of all blood relationships. All blood relations evolve out of this alone. The existential energy as Shiva and Shakti; or Purush and Prakriti is at play as the basis of this energy field. In scientific terms we can say it is the interplay of positive and negative energies. The entire process of evolution takes place because of this interaction. As we are entering into this realm a few things have to be understood first. Self – chosen implies, the two persons guided by their sub – conscious and unconscious states of awareness have chosen the other as part of this relationship. This cannot be wrong when it comes to soul’s journey. Your sub – conscious and unconscious is part of total consciousness. This decision cannot be erroneous as far as soul’s journey is concerned. Soul seeks evolution from this state. And it wants to attain freedom from the bondage of body-mind mechanism. It is the sub – conscious and unconscious that begins this journey. In the process you have to journey through dark caves of the soul. These dark caves are created by your dogmas, religious beliefs and the mind. The moment mind comes to play its role problem begins. This you need to understand. You have to trust your initial judgment. As you traverse through these caves many emotions, feelings etc. emerge and mind fails to understand this for the continuation of the journey. In the absence of understanding we tend to abandon the one relation and want to take another

course. Thus we remain throughout a traveler and never find a place of rest. In the desert of Misery, and pain you experience occasional oasis of pleasure or happiness. To transcend beyond pain and pleasure and thus attain to the state of bliss you need to understand certain things. 1. Start being honest and true when you enter into relationship. And only that allow the same to your partner as well. 2. Start dropping all deception, masks, faces. 3. They have become habit. So unless you drop them consciously and deliberately, they are never dropped and therefore continue to hang around the neck. And much pain will come this way. For example, you are going with her and you see a beautiful woman and you say to her that you are pulled by this woman and her beauty. A great desire to possess her has arisen in you. You are honest. Not that you are going to possess her, but the desire has arisen. There is fear in you. You are caught into two situations. If you are honest and there is lack of understanding in the other this will create a serious problem. To appreciate and encounter such situation is quite natural. In such a situation if you are honest problem comes and if you are dishonest that two will create problem. Ordinarily you feel it is better not to say such things to your woman. Even if she catches you red-handed still you never

confess. And she will catch you many times, because your eyes will show. When you look at another woman who is beautiful and attractive and suddenly a desire arises in you. Unconscious is playing its role. You cannot do anything right now about it. It is natural for such situations to arise. To do anything is possible only when it has arisen, not before it. But it has arisen now. You can repress it but you cannot do anything else. Even if the woman catches you, you would like to pretend that no, it was not that. You were looking at something else. Do not be untrue. Then you will be vulnerable to pain. And start by being vulnerable to pain because everybody wants to be open for pleasure and nobody wants to be open for pain. And the arithmetic is: if you are open to pain, only then can you be open to pleasure. They are directly proportional to one another. If you are not open to pain you cannot be open to pleasure. That is why there are so many people in the world, each hankering for pleasure, and everybody is in pain because they have taken a wrong step from the very beginning. And let her also be true, allow her truth. Do not force her to repress. Allow freedom. By and by you will learn the bitter-sweet taste of it. It is bitter and sweet both at the same time. And if you can become available to pain, nobody can prevent you from becoming available to pleasure or joy. You have earned it. By going into pain one earns and learns how to be in pleasure or joy. So just start opening by and by. And there is no need to do it all of a sudden and too

much, at one time? Because that can destroy a relationship! Go in small doses slowly and slowly. Just show a little part of your real face and not the whole face at one time. By and by let the mask slip. Let the mask be loose. Then one day you can remove it totally. And she will also feel very happy by and by, because when you start becoming open, you help her also to become open. It works in a reciprocal way. She becomes open. You become more courageous. And when this opening brings pain you will see that it has brought a totally new quality to pain. It is a quality that is very refreshing. It is painful and yet cleansing, painful yet worthwhile. It brings something. It brings integration and some clarity too. And makes you more aware! Pain always makes people aware. When you consciously go into it and there was every possibility that you could have avoided it. The woman was not with you and you came home and you told her that a beautiful woman passed on the road and suddenly a great desire arose in you and you did not know from where. Now there was no need. She was not with you. You could have easily avoided it. But it is not good to avoid. When you have given your heart to a woman you have to share everything that arises in your heart. There should not be anything private. Everything should be shared. Pain and pleasure both should be shared. Normally this is not so. We only want to share pleasure. Purposely I am using the word pleasure because pain and pleasure go together as pairs of opposites.

This authenticity will bring an intimacy which is not the ordinary intimacy of married couples. Married people are never intimate. They simply pretend to be intimate. Their intimacy has motives in it. Maybe to pretend to be intimate is good for the children. To pretend to be intimate is good for one’s own financial affairs, future securities, respectability in the society. But intimacy is not there. It is more a formal thing. It happens always like this in almost all the relations. There are no moments of silence between couples. As lover and beloved there have always been moments of silence. Then you could remain silent just holding the hands together and feeling the surge of refreshing energy. Or you can go on looking at one another. Such is the not the situation between husband and wives. They are always talking – no, no, no quarrelling all the while and they get silent only when they are angry after the wrestling bout. You may be fighting with your woman and a friend knocks on the door. Suddenly everything changes and you start smiling. The mind comes in and everything is going so beautifully. And just a moment before you were ready to kill each other! What happened? This is just a social face. You are not only deceiving the friend instead you are deceiving yourself too. So I am telling you to move into pain. It is arduous, dangerous in the beginning. One never knows what will happen but one thing is certain that if you can move through pain, pain will cleanse you of many impurities, of many gross elements in you. Certainly it will make you more subtle and more aware too. And through

pain you will become available to pleasure also. When one is ready to suffer pain there is no point in repressing pleasure. We repress pleasure because we are afraid that if we allow pleasure to have total possession the pain will also come with it. It is its other side of the coin. It will come certainly. So people do not go into pleasure totally! They go very cautiously. Even while making love people do not abandon themselves. They remain in control. A subtle control, a remote control, they continue with. They keep the button in their hand somewhere. If something goes too far and they are crossing the boundary, they turn it off. But they never go to the very end of it. The fear is that if you go too much into pleasure you may be entering the forbidden territory of pain. It is always there. And this is the pain. So start with pain. And if you can be open in pain! And if you want some time to cry, cry! Where else will you cry if you cannot cry before your woman? Forget all nonsense that has been taught that a man never cries. If a man never cries, he is not a man. Either he is inhuman or he is superhuman, but one thing certain: he is not man. Cry sometimes. Share your sorrow, your sadness. Weep like a child in totality. Crying will clear many suppressed emotions. Crying is therapeutic. And the same I am saying to your partner. She has to do the same. And by and by you will see that a great INTIMACY is arising

which has nothing to do with society. And with that intimacy much happiness will happen. You will explode into happiness. But begin with pain, and always remember that everything has to begin in pain. Meditate together and open your hearts as they are. Sometimes wrong, sometimes rotten, and other times not worth showing to anybody yet still show it to your beloved. In this way you will also help her to show everything. And when all the cards are open you are not even holding a trump card a new kind of intimacy arises on its own accord. For me ‘Intimacy’ implies, ‘Before you I will be totally nude. I will not hide anything.’ That is what intimacy is all about. Intimacy is not biological nudeness. Intimacy is psychological nudeness. It is, ‘When you are in the room, I will be as if I am alone.’ Your presence will not make me repress something. Your presence will not make me change and show something else which is not there. I will be as natural as I am in the bathroom when I am alone! Then there is intimacy. There is a risk in it! One never knows what will come out of it. But one thing can be said certainly, whatsoever comes will be beautiful. If separation comes out of it, it will be beautiful, better, more beautiful than the so-called marriage. If marriage comes out of it, it will be tremendously beautiful. If there is existing relationship it will continue its journey for fruition.

Inner beauty sometimes manifests as outer one!

The Creator is the process of Creation!

Laughter is therapeutic. Crying clears suppressed emotions and Laughter hammers your energy channels. Together crying and laughter transforms human consciousness. In many different ways laughter has been used as the device to bring about transformation. Laughing Buddha created one methodology. He used to move from place to place and he would just laugh – a roaring laughter – a belly laugh. People will gather around. Everyone will become part of this pool of energy. Tremendous pool of energy is generated and everyone becomes part of this celebration. This is all was the technique. Many legends are associated with this laughing Buddha. Laughing Buddha is the celestial Buddha known as Hotei or Pu-Tai. Laughing Buddha is best known as the jolly In China. He is also known as the Loving or Friendly One. He is based on an eccentric Chinese Ch’an or Zen monk who lived over 1,000 years ago and has become a significant part of Buddhist and Shinto culture. Because of this monk’s benevolent nature, he came to be known as an incarnation of the ‘bodhisattva’ who will be ‘Maitreya Buddha’. His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation ‘Laughing Buddha.’ Laughing Buddha Statues are perhaps one of the most loved artifacts. They are commonly seen in homes, offices, hotels, gardens, restaurants and shops. The Laughing Buddha is a symbol of happiness, contentment, and prosperity. He is bald a rotund figure with a warm smiling face. He is clothed in robes,

and his protruding belly symbolizes abundance and mirth. He is also believed to be the future Buddha or Maitreya Buddha. The obese Buddha with a smiling face is known as ‘Budai’ in China. The Chinese laughing Buddha is associated to a roving Ch’an (Zen) monk of the ‘Liang Dynasty’ in China. He was famous for his benevolent and cheerful nature. He used to carry a cloth like bag wherever he went. The bag was called ‘Pu- Tai’ in indigenous Chinese language. Hence the monk came to be known as ‘Pu-tai Hoshang’ or ‘hemp-bag monk’. Laughing Buddha statues depict a stout, smiling or laughing bald man in robes with a largely exposed pot belly stomach, which symbolizes happiness, good luck, and plenitude. Some sculpture has small children at his feet. Another item that is usually seen with the Laughing Buddha figure is a begging bowl to represent his Buddhist nature. In some scenes the Laughing Buddha may be found sitting on a cart drawn by boys, or wielding a fan called an oogi (said to be a ‘wish giving’ fan -- in the distant past, this type of fan was used by the aristocracy to indicate to vassals that their requests would be granted). All of these images display Hotei as a wandering monk who goes around and takes the sadness from people of this world. According to legend, if one rubs the Laughing Buddha’s great belly, it brings forth wealth, good luck, and prosperity. Hotei is also referred to as the patron saint of restaurateurs, fortunetellers and bartenders. When one overeats or over drinks, friends jokingly attribute it to the Laughing Buddha’s influence.

LOVE BLOSSOMS WHEN ALL NEEDS ARE FINISHED! Love is an unseen but realized truth beyond all that is known. Each relationship evolves out of sub – consciousness. As an individual your sub – conscious differs from that of the other. No two individuals can ever have same sub – conscious pattern. This makes each unique. And this gives rise to ego and makes the journey together difficult as well. It requires tremendous understanding to move together. Also it requires an understanding that this togetherness has a purpose. And the purpose is spiritual growth so that each can attain fruition. The journey requires togetherness. Both are dependent on one another for their growth. This dependence has to become inter dependence first. One day each one of you has to become independent of a constant need of being cared for by a woman or a man. That is the day that one actually becomes mature. That is the day when you are finished with your mother, and that is the day you can start loving a woman. Otherwise in every woman you will go on searching for your mother. Or in every man you will go on searching your father. Then it is going to be false love. It is going to be political. Because you need the care, you pretend to love, but that is not mature

love. You are like a child hanging onto the mother or the father. If you continue this way you will never know what love is. One has to finish with this dependence. Only when you are finished with it, then for the first time you will be able to decide whether you love this woman or not, because now there is no need. Now you can share. When there is no need, only then love flowers. Love blossoms only when all needs at physical, emotional, psychological, and intellectual have disappeared. Love is the most luxurious thing in the world. It is not a need. Instead it is the last luxury, the ultimate in luxuries. If you still need love it is just as any other needs. One needs food, or shelter, or clothes. One needs this and that. Then love is also part of this world. If love is still your need, than it is part of this world. Love belongs to the beyond. That is why love remains unknown and unknowable. Love first gives birth to you and then love evolves you. When there is no need of love at any level of your being and you are simply flowing with energy and would like to share with someone, and someone has now begin overflowing with energy and would like to share with you, then you both offer your energies to an unknown god of love.

And it is sheer luxury because it is purposeless. It has no business to do. It is intrinsic. It is not a means to anything else. It is a great play. It is merger of two overflowing energies. Love is a state of your consciousness when you are joyous. When there is a dance in your being love blossoms. Something starts vibrating, and radiating, from your center. Then something starts pulsating around you. It starts reaching people around you. It can reach women. Also it can reach men. So too it can reach rocks and trees and stars. This is cosmic dance of Shiva – ecstasy. When I speak of love, this is what I am overflowing. Such love is not a relationship instead a State of Being. Whenever I use the word love, it is the State of Your Being because there is no other word as profound as Love. I use it as a state of being, not as a relationship. Relationship is only a minor aspect of it. But your idea of love is basically that of relationship, as if that is all. The nature of relationship goes on changing because it is the mirror effect of the state of your being. Your being operates through various stages of consciousness. And any change in your state of consciousness will unfold different natures of relationships. I am speaking of love as it evolves when everything and all states dissolve into one another. And nothing remains except oneness. Relationship is needed only because you cannot be alone. Consciousness is still muddled. You have not known the cause of relationship. Because you are not yet capable of meditation you cannot know why two persons have to enter into

relationship. Hence, meditation is a must before you can really love. One should be capable of being alone, utterly alone, and yet tremendously blissful. Without meditation no understanding can dawn. And without understanding relationship cannot attain to fruition. Then you can love. Then your love is no longer a need instead a sharing, no longer a necessity. You will not become dependent on the people you love. You will share and sharing is beautiful. This is what I am doing here – Sharing my being, my Presence, and my Love. But what ordinarily happens in the world? You do not have love. The person you think you love has no love in his being, either. Both are seeking for love from each other. None has experienced this deep within. Two beggars begging each other! Hence, there is fight, the conflict, the continuous quarrel between the lovers over trivial matters, over immaterial and stupid things! Thus life continues. The basic quarrel is that the husband thinks he is not getting what is his right to get. The wife too thinks she is not getting what is her right to get. The wife thinks she has been deceived and betrayed too. The husband also thinks that he has been deceived. Where is the love then? Nobody bothers to give. What to say of sharing. Everybody wants to get. And when everybody is seeking to get love, nobody gets it and everybody feels at a loss, empty, miserable and tense. The basic foundation of love is missing. It is like making the temple without the foundation. It is going to fall and collapse

any moment. And you know how many times your love has collapsed. And still you go on doing the same thing again and again. You go on changing the partners without even creating the foundation. The foundation of love is aloneness. Aloneness is the fragrance of meditation. You live in such unawareness! You do not see what you have been doing to your life and to that of others. You go on living mechanically, like a robot. You go on repeating the old pattern, knowing perfectly well you have done this before. You entered into one relationship that turned sour. You have not learned anything. Failures have not taught anything. Instead of seeking the cause you enter into another relationship. Also you know the outcome always, and deep down you are also alert that it is going to happen the same way again because there is no difference. You are preparing for the same conclusion, the same collapse and the same misery. If you can learn anything from the failure of love, it is to become more aware, become more meditative. And by meditation I mean the capacity to be joyous alone. Very rarely you will find someone capable of being blissful for no reason at all just sitting silently and blissfully! Others will think you mad because the idea of happiness is that it has to come from somebody else. In reality bliss is the outcome of aloneness. You meet a beautiful woman and you are happy, or you meet a beautiful man and you are happy. However sitting silently in your room and being blissful, is considered crazy or something! It is very

rarely you will find such a person who is blissful by himself. No TV, no phone or no one is needed for his bliss. Meditation is releasing your own psychedelic powers. It is releasing your own hidden splendor. And you become so joyous. A celebration arises in your being, and you need no relationship. Still you can relate with people. And that alone is the difference between relating and relationship. Relationship is a commodity. Relationship is stationary. Relating is a process. You cling to relationship and remain stuck and miserable. Relating is a flow, a movement, a process. You meet a person, you are overflowing because you have so much love to give and the more you give, the more you have. Once you have understood this strange arithmetic of love that the more you give, the more you have you will be blissful. This is just against the economic laws that operate in the outside world. Once you have known that, if you want to have more love and more joy, you have to learn to share. Then you simply share. And whosoever allows you to share your joy with him or with her, you feel grateful to him or her. But it is not a relationship. It is a river like flow. The river flows and passes by the side of a tree, greeting the tree, nourishing it, giving water to the tree and then the river moves on, dances on. It does not cling to the tree. And the tree does not hanker for the river. The tree never laments, ‘Where are you going? We are married! And before you can leave me you will need a divorce at least a separation! Where are you going? And if you were going to leave me, why did

you dance so beautifully around me? Why did you nourish me in the first place?’ And the tree in return showers its flowers onto the river out of deep gratitude, and then the river moves on. The wind comes and dances around the tree and moves on. And the tree fills the wind with its fragrance in return. The entire universe is sharing except man.

This is relating. If humanity is ever going to become grown – up, or mature, this will be the way of love. People meeting, sharing, moving, in a very non possessive manner flowing like a river or blowing and surging through the tree leaves is indeed love that transcends all boundaries of finiteness.

Indeed Love is beyond Relationship!

There is a lovely episode. When Meera arrived at Vrindavan’s most famous temple, an attempt was made to stop her at the door, because entry to the temple was forbidden to women. The high priest of the temple had never seen women. Meera was a woman, so arrangements were made to stop her. But those people who were standing by the door to stop her, they were struck dumb. When Meera came dancing, holding her EKTARA in her hand, playing music; and a crowd of devotees behind her, spreading wine in all directions, and all drunk – in that drunkenness those who stood guard were also stunned. They forgot they were meant to stop her until Meera had entered inside. The breeze was as one wave – it went right in and reached the inner sanctum. The priest freaked out. He had been worshipping Krishna; the tray fell from his hands. He had not seen a woman for years. Women were not admitted to that temple. How had this woman come inside here? Now think a little... the guards at the door became immersed in feeling, but the priest could not dive in! No, the priests are the most blind people in the world. And to find a more unintelligent person than a scholar is difficult. The guards too were drowned in this juice. This drunken woman, this ecstatic Meera came, came as a wave – they too forgot for a moment, forgot completely what their job was. They remembered only when Meera had gone past.

Early Talks – Sahajo - OSHO

[REPRODUCED: TASAWWURE SHEIKH BY SHEIKH TAOSHOBUDDHA AND NAQSHBANDI LAKSHNI SAHAI]

‘The master appears only when the disciple is ready.’

S

ufis have a unique way of parables to say all that cannot be said in words and directly. This has been the Sufi tariqat. From earlier Sufis to Shah Bahauddin Naqshband to present day Sufis all use such parables. Sheikhs even devise their own parables and anecdotes to carry the tariqat. A certain man decided to seek a perfect master. So he read many books. Visited many sheikhs one after sheikhs! Listened to different sheikhs! Practised and argued as well! But of no avail. He always found himself doubtful of all he was doing or hearing. Also he was unsure. Such is the situation of each one of you. After a long search of twenty years he came across a sheikh whose every word and action corresponded with his idea of a totally realized sheikh. The traveller wasted no time. ‘You’, he said ‘seem to me to be perfect master. If you are then my search is over.’ ‘I am indeed described by that name and quality,’ replied the sheikh. ‘Then I beg of you, accept me as your disciple.’ ‘That,’ the master responded, ‘I cannot do; because while you may desire the Perfect master, but he, in turn requires only the perfect disciple.’ This is the whole parable. This happens only with a real master not the counterfeit. A real master will come to you when you are ready. And a counterfeit will advertise for the recruitment of disciples. Or a

disciple will interview many masters before he chooses a master. Counterfeit in fact! ‘The master appears only when the disciple is ready.’ This is not philosophy or Sufi scripture. Also this is not the sufi way alone. Instead this is how it happens in the world of spiritualism. And this never happens in no other way and also at no other time in man’s eternal journey. When the disciple is ready Master appears. I am speaking out of my own experience. The entire chain of sufi masters bears testimony to it. Sufis have four major paths that have emanated from holy Prophet. These are Naqshbandiyah, Sohrawardiyah, Quadriyah, and Chistiyah. I will not go into details of these tariqats as these I have explained in ‘Leaves from a Sufi Heart vol 1’; ‘Leaves from a Sufi Heart Vol 2’; and other Sufi works in details. Also my purpose is your transformation. And for this all that is necessary I will have to use. I am like a physician to whom the health of the patient matters not the source, name or anything else of the medicines. This is the reason my purpose is to expose you to various paths so that somewhere along the way you may discover the familiar splendour in an unknown path. Also I am here to give you insight into each and every flower of this garden that is being nourished and nurtured by God himself. Along the path I will take you on a voyage into various such flowers, Socrates, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Lau Tzu, BodhiDharma, Chung Tzu, Lei Tzu, Krishna, Mahabir, Buddha, Ramkrishna, Aurobindo, Osho, Raman, Rama, Mira etc. The flowers are many. Only you have to be prepared for this journey. As far as I am concerned

I am visiting this planet only for this purpose so that a religious man can take birth out of you. In the process of growth the disciple has to earn eyes to see the beauty. Flowers are blossoming every moment but if you do not have eyes, you cannot see the beauty. The sky is filled with stars of immense beauty, but not for you. The sun rises in immense beauty and splendour but not for you. Unless you develop eyes there is no beauty. So too if there is no love in your heart overflowing you will not discover the beloved. Only love can discover love. Only lover can discover beloved. Only eyes can find beauty. And only innocence of the ear can find music and melody. The world is full of people who go on searching something outside even without creating a corresponding receptivity within. I have come across many such seekers who go on searching for a master. And remain unaware that the disciple within is absent in them. Disciple within is one side of receptivity. Only this receptivity can attract the master. Remember master is not an objective phenomenon. First the master has to be something inside you. Master inside means disciple-hood! A preparation! A thirst! An intense desire! A passion for exploring truth! In most of the people this is lacking. And then when such a person goes on the search for a master he cannot find. He may come across many masters. But he will go on missing. You cannot find a master unless you are vulnerable. You cannot see a master unless the disciple is born in you. The search for the master begins with the search for being a disciple. A real seeker does not bother about searching the master. His whole concern is to give birth to a disciple in him. Being a disciple means how to be a learner, how to open to reality. Being a disciple means how to function through innocence. Functioning out of state of knowledge – a priori conclusion is not going to help in the process of inward growth. When you are functioning from the state of knowledge you will find many teachers but never a

master. If you know something already or think that you know, you will only find other knower. You can only meet persons like you. A person who functions from the state of knowledge will only find many teachers and will continue to learn. Such a person will never find a master. To find a master you have to be a child like. Utterly innocent – empty of any conclusions! Only full of passion for truth then suddenly you will find you need not go anywhere. The master will come to you instead. ‘Master appears when the disciple is ready.’ Such is the promise of God to you. The existence wants you to explore your potential. So it continues to watch your inner preparation. Seek the disciple in you first. Then master will appear. This is one of the basic requirements for a seeker. The seeker has to be a learner. Who is a learner? Definitely not the one who is a – priori conclusions. Instead one who always functions out of innocence and awe? One should not carry any conclusion. Because when you have conclusions you cannot learn. Why? When you have a conclusion you only want a confirmation. And when you go to learn from anyone and something goes against your conclusion, your ego will get hurt. Then you are not learning anything. In such a case only your old prejudice is strengthened more. A master wants you to grow and not gather anything superfluous. A master creates situations for your potentiality to explode. If a master tells you something that agrees with you then you cannot learn. It will simply strength your old mind. And a master cannot do this. He has to destroy the old for new to take birth. He takes away the burden of all that you have been carrying. His role is to create a space in you. When you cling to conclusions, philosophies, ideas, conclusions, and prejudices; you will not meet a master. He has to destroy all these. No speculation about conclusion is needed. He is interested in real thing not conclusions. Iranian mystical poet Omar Khayyam says what you shall gain by talking about those who are drunk. No matter how much is said about anything

it will remain far from reality. Reality cannot be put into words. Reality is inexpressible. Become a disciple. Seek to be a disciple. And when you are ready thus the master will appear. But master appears in strange ways and means sometimes. One thing is certain master always appears. When someone is ripe, God starts coming in many ways. Master is the last visible form, God descends in. Master is the last formful experience. Beyond him there is only formlessness. Master is the last one who looks like you! Talks like you! Lives like you! To whom you can touch! Whom you can relate! However, in fact, he is like you plus much more. Beyond him only silence is. Bodilessness is! An enlightened Raman used to say to his disciples, ‘If you want to be with me, you will have to unlearn. If you do not unlearn, then I have nothing to give you. You are already full.’ Such is the situation of all the masters.

held the cup the master started pouring tea from the pot. The cup got full and tea began to overflow in the saucer but the master continued. Soon the saucer got full as well. But Bankei did not stop pouring the tea. The learned professor shouted, are you mad or what. Can’t you see that the cup is full, the saucer is also full and there is no more room. It cannot take anymore tea. Bankei gave a hearty laugh and said, ‘So, you are intelligent! You can understand! And understand well! If there is no space in the cup then we cannot pour any more tea into the cup. Is there any space in your head? I would like to pour all that I am. But there is no space. You are already full of your conditionings, beliefs and ways of rituals.’ ‘This is my answer. Come again when you are empty.’ This is my answer said Bankei. If you are full of knowledge then you cannot hear. Bankei did not say he would like to tell him all he knew. Instead, he said he would like to pour all that he is. This is significant. This is how a master works.

Now the Zen story: Now a Sufi expression! Once, a professor of philosophy went to see a Zen master Bankei. The professor asked many questions, about God, Karma, reincarnation and many more. Questions after questions the learned one continued. Listening to this the master said, ‘You seem to be tired. The journey to this place was long. I can see you sweating, coming up the hill on such a hot afternoon. You wait. There is no hurry. You take rest until I make a cup of tea. And who knows while drinking the tea you may get the answer.’ This puzzled the learned one. People had already told him that Bankei is crazy. He became suspicious whether he was right in coming to this mad man. He thought, ‘How can the questions be answered just by drinking tea.’ Now that he was stuck. There was no way to escape. So he thought tea is not going to harm. He decided to have tea and then escape. The master brought the tea in a pot and an empty cup with a saucer. Bankei handed over the cup and the saucer to the learned one. As the professor

A pundit – the so called learned used to come to a Sufi Naqshbandi Raghuber Dayal. But out of his ignorance that he came from a higher caste he never vowed to this master. Vowing to any master or putting head on the master’s feet is very significant. The pundit always showed respect to the master but never vowed to the master. It was the last meeting. Maybe something was to happen. It was the last visit of the Sufi to the place where the pundit lived. After that visit the Sufi entered Samadhi. So when the pundit came to see the Sufi somehow he put his head at the feet of the Sufi. At this the Sufi said, ‘Pundit putting the head on my feet will do nothing. If you are ready to put all that is stored in it then something can really happen.’ The Sufi meant exactly the same what Bankei told the philosopher. When you bow down to a master or put your head on his feet, this is symbolic. With the passage of time people have forgotten the real meaning. And empty tradition has remained in the hands of the people to follow.

Many years after the master had entered Samadhi and the pundit had inner preparation he had to go to another Naqshbandi Sufi master Sufi Brij Mohan Lal – the son of Sufi Raghuber Dayal.

learn. You cannot say – I do not know. I am ready to learn. The master in some cases has to create emptiness in you. This is the only way that he can transfer all that he is in you.

Another anecdote! A man named Shiv Narain Das followed a master – Latoo Ji Maharaj who was the fellow disciple of Swami Vivekananda. One day Shiv Narain expressed the desire for initiation to Latoo Ji. Do you know what did Swami Ji told him?

Hindus have a scripture called ‘Prashnopanishad’. Six disciples approached a master. Each one of them has one question. The state of emptiness has not happened completely. The master said, ‘I cannot answer any question now.’ You will have to remain in my place for one year. And then if I feel like answering your questions, I will. If I see there is no need then I will not.’

Swami Ji said, ‘I cannot initiate you. Your share is not with me.’ Such is the state of a real master. On enquiring Swami Ji told this man to continue what he was doing. Your master will recognize you one day. Many years passed. One day Shiv Narain came in the company of Sufi Raghuber Dayal and later one day expressed desire to be initiated. Sufi Raghuber Dayal asked him to wait until his eldest son Sufi Brij Mohan Lal visits the town and approach him for initiation. One day it happened that Sufi Brij Mohan Lal visited the town. As people gathered Shiv Narain tried to introduce him to the master, the Sufi told him not to worry, and there was no need for introduction. He already knew him. This amazed Shiv Narain. Same time he remembered the words of Swami Latoo Ji Maharaj, ‘Your master will recognize you.’ Such are the ways of Sufi masters. A master is not a person. Instead master is a state of awareness or you can say continuity. I am sharing with you my experiences and interactions with these masters and disciples. Remember knowledge always hankers to argue. A man of knowledge is never interested in learning. Ego hurts. And in learning it feels humiliated. Children can learn because there is no ego. When ego is not the capacity to learn is faster. Children learn very fast and easily. And when you have to learn the same thing after thirty-five and forty years, it is almost impossible. What happens to human intelligence? After years of experience the intelligence should be sharp more than before. But it is not. Usually in the process of growth you gather too much dust and junk. Then the functioning of intellect no longer remains free. It gets burdened. And you feel humiliated when you have to come to someone to

To understand masters message inner preparation is needed. Without such preparation the message of the master will not reach you. It happened in the times of Buddha. Once, a philosopher Mudgalyam came to Buddha. He asked certain questions. So he asked these questions to Buddha. Buddha responded, ‘I cannot answer any of your questions now. You will have to stay here for one year. Thereafter, only if I feel like I will answer your questions. Maybe you will not need the answer.’ At this another monk Sariputta, who was sitting nearby under a tree at a distance began to laugh and said, ‘Mudgalyam if you want the answers get them now. Otherwise you will never get the answers. One year ago Buddha told me the same thing. And now I do not have any question. Just remaining here all questions have dissolved.’ A master never answers questions. Instead he answers you. In master’s presence the questioning mind dissolves. A master can fill you when you are empty. So the real search is not for the master. It is a search how to be a disciple. The greatest problem for inward journey is searching the disciple within. This is the first step. And the first step is most difficult. Later on I will explain the methodology to overcome this first step. When your cup is empty! And you come to a master who is overflowing with God, you are filled. Do you know how does a master transfer his being? It happened. Buddha gave discourses for forty years to an almost large crowd of monks

every day. One day Buddha came with a flower in his hand. As he came he sat in lotus posture. Everyone was waiting for Buddha to speak. But he remained silent. And when such situation arises many thoughts begin to float in human mind. Such was the situation of all the monks except Mahakashyap. Mahakashyap was in a state of no-mind. No thoughts! No ripples! Just a pool of silence! A silence that was continuously deepening! Buddha looked at Mahakashyap. Two silences merged into one another. A deeper silence! No thought still! No words either! Just merging and deepening silence! How to express this silence? So is the case with other words like fire, food, sleep, rest etc. When such is the case with ordinary words then you can imagine the trouble a mystic faces. Also the direct way of saying or expressing truth is too violent, aggressive and masculine. Truth can only be narrated in an indirect way. No one can be convinced of truth. However you can be persuaded to truth. A real master will not try to convince you of truth. But definitely he will persuade you towards truth. Parable is unique way. Even those who are not searching for truth in any way are usually struck by a parable. Parable makes something available to these people suddenly. And one thing is certain everyone likes stories. Stories have a tendency to hang around your consciousness. You cannot forget them. It is not only a question of forgetting them, you can remember them easily. Stories have a very unique way of reaching to the deepest core of your being. Sufis have been using parables as their device. A parable is entirely different from a Zen koan, or Tao, or Yoga or Tantra way. ‘A certain man decided to seek the perfect master.’ PRELUDE TO THE PARABLE CONTINUES:

Remember knowledge is always interested in arguments. Such is the nature of knowledge. Knowledge is not interested in learning at all. In learning it feels humiliated. That is why it becomes

very difficult to learn. The more grown up you are less is the possibility for you to learn anything. A grown up person knows a lot but his capacity to learn is negligible. On the contrary, children know nothing but their capacity to learn is tremendous. Children are capable to learn very fast. Also they learn very easily. When you have to learn after the age of 35-40 or 50 years, it is very difficult – almost impossible sometimes. You may wonder what happens to the intelligence of a grown up person. After 40-50 years of experience in the world, human intelligence needs to be sharper than before. But it is not so. In the process of life’s journey much dust and superfluous gathers on the layers of the mind. Intellect gets too much burdened. And then such a person feels really humiliated in learning anything. Most of the time, this remains the conflict between the youth and the old. How can such knowledge bow down? Knowledge cannot say, ‘I do not know.’ and a disciple is one who can say ‘I do not know. All that I have known or gathered has not helped me to gain anything substantial in life. Therefore I am ready to learn. I have not come with any conclusions. I am empty. Fill me with thy awareness.’ To say this or reach to this state of emptiness is most difficult. Once this has happened the other process happens without any effort. The real search is to seek the disciple in you. The real search implies how to empty the cup of your being. So that when you come across anyone who is overflowing with God, you can be filled! Filled to your heart’s content! Strangely enough everyone is searching for a master. And in the search each is looking for the brand name, labels, number of disciples! Everything outer! But none of such people ever search disciplehood. So they go on missing the master. Then you will come across many people. But still you will feel unsatisfied. The reason for this does not exist on the surface. Instead it comes from your own mind. Let me tell you something about a Hassid mystic – Levi-Yitzhak. He was a beautiful Hasid master. He was so full of God that the song and dance of God

overflowed whenever he worshipped or prayed. While worshipping or praying, he used to get so intoxicated that most of the times he would go wild. So it is said that he simply radiated the divine dance in its total wildness. He always worshipped with so much passion that people used to get frightened and move away each time. If he was worshipping in the temple, people would escape. Because while worshipping he would go wild. Nothing existed for him then. When he prayed, even he himself ceased to exist. Now if you come with some preconceived ideas about how a master should be then Levi-Yitzhak appears to you a madman. If you think a master should be dressed a particular way! Or he should be sitting still like a Buddha! Then this man who is turning things upside down or running all over the place or who has scared other worshippers will certainly not fulfil the criterion of a master. But Levi-Yitzhak was a perfect master.

Mohammed! And remember God always comes in new forms. As a result there is no meeting. Remember all your conclusions are old. If you are born in Buddhist family, then how can you think this Hasid master to be a Buddha? Impossible! If you move with your conclusions, you will land in difficulty. The disciple of one master will not be able to recognize another master as master. As an individual you keep on carrying deep rooted prejudices. To you such prejudices will look very rational. The master is enquiring ‘Had you prepared yourself to be a disciple all these years. You came across me many a times. But you missed each time. And once again you have missed. Such is Sufi approach to have communion with a master. First seek master. Remember master appears when the disciple is ready.

God descends in many forms. Sometimes as a Buddha! Other times as a Krishna! Other times as a A prayer is the lament. Prayer is the song of the heart. But it is addressed to the unknown. Maybe He is. Maybe not! But that is not the point. You should be joyous, and ecstatic in pouring your heart out. This is joy on to itself. Prayer is primary. And the existence of God is secondary. Never forget prayer is primary. It reveals God to you. It opens eyes. It opens the petals of your heart. It creates God. Suddenly everything becomes aflame with love. When you are aflame you can see everything around you as divine.

137th Birth Anniversary Lalaji - Naqshbandi Sufi Ram Chandra, 1873-1931

In Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita the Lord Incarnate as Krishna proclaims

Whenever there is decline is religiousness and eternal value, O Bharat, for the establishment of righteousness and resurrection of declining values! For the protection of the sage, the destruction of the lowly narrowness and for the transformation of Human Consciousness I rise from age to age!!! What will be the form in which Absolute consciousness will manifest, everyone has his own understanding. Christians are waiting and will continue to wait for the arrival of Jesus. In existence nothing can be repeated. When absolute consciousness chooses to assume the human form it can choose any form. Lucky are those who recognize this. Walk a few steps along with such consciousness hand in hand. In the process they are transformed. I am really fortunate that I lived in an era that saw the advent of this great soul that humanity came to know as Lalaji(q) – A Naqshbandi – Mujaddadi – Mazaharia Sheikh from Indian Sub continent. And Lo! My good fortunes does not end here, the existence has now brought me in association of another Naqshbandi Sheikh from the same linage Sheikh Taoshobuddha. Thus the sunshine and moonlight of this great soul surrounds us each finite moment. And I count on my good fortune as grace when a few months ago Taoshobuddha asked me to edit the work ‘The Secrets of Spiritual Life’, and now once again Taoshobuddha asked me to present you the moment of celebration of the life of this mystic and master. Ecstasy of my being knows no limits as I never thought that being in such spiritual desert of Sweden Oasis of Spirituality could be created. All this is the grace of this Soul that we know as LalaJi. In the month of February on Basant Panchami (A Hindu festival declaring the arrival of spring season) the birth anniversary of Lalaji is celebrated. This event is even

celebrated at the inner planes, as it is a special happening. And to me that is the real celebration. First we celebrate deep with and then its beauty manifests in the outer realms. Unless we learn to celebrate like this we are still far from truth as Taoshobuddha says. His birth was foretold and his mastership prophesized several decades before its actual happing. Lalaji is unique, as he became the very first Hindu Sufi master who did not convert into Islam. Different religions are only outer labels, as it has nothing to do with your inner self or with your inner contact with God. Spirituality lies far beyond the religious spheres. The labels of the different religions are just labels and nothing more. It says nothing of your inner qualities, whereas your actions, words and thoughts reveal your inner state. Lalaji lived a perfect life and his words were so potent that they affect even the people of today who read it, more then hundred years after. His birth was predestinated Even the birth of Lalaji had to obey to the happening of destiny. His mother was a very pious and religious lady spending her time in prayer, singing and recital of the Ramayana (Hindu book about Rama, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu). She often used to visit saints and spending her money for helping the poor. Once a saint came to their city and she went to his CONGREGATION (satsang). The saint explained some certain compositions of Saint Kabir and she was completely absorbed in them that as tears started rolling out of her eyes. Perceiving her state the saint was moved and showered her with blessings. From that day she got more and more dedicated to God and she often started to fall in deep meditation and Samadhi. After some time a Muslim Fakir came to her door and she gave him some food. He asked for some other food, which she did not have. She did some arrangement so that the food he asked for could be served. The Fakir was very pleased with her and asked her if there was anything she was missing in her life. She was a woman of heart and wanted to be a mother, so the servant of the house told that she has everything except a son. The saint looked up in the sky and rising two finger to heaven and said, “One…two…. one...two” and departed never to be seen again. The blessings of the Fakir materialized and after about a year on the 2nd February 1873 Ram Chandra alias Lala ji was born. After two years, on the 7th October 1875 his younger brother, Munshi Raghubar Dayal was born. So the eternal happenings had to flow with the destiny, as foretold by the Fakir.

Mastership is prepared even at childhood Both his parents love him very dearly and he was like a prince. However his father used to drink and engage in ostentatious and flamboyant activities and the wealth was thus wasted. On Lalaji’s fourth birthday his father’s friend celebrated and a lot of liquor was served. His mother never liked it but she kept mum. He was not an infant anymore and when his father with love embraced him tightly, with a sudden jerk he came out of his

embrace and said, “You are stinking”. It hit his father and he hated himself for having taken liquor. It is said that thereafter he sopped drinking. Not only that, he even started hating it. After that he did not even mention the word liquor again. By three words alone this four-year-old boy changed his father’s bad habits. It was as a master had told them, because these words completely transformed his father within seconds. Lalaji wrote in his book, “I never liked to play with children of my age. As long as my mother was alive, she was my friend, companion, and everything. Whatever she did, I too did…because of her company I developed interest in seeking the Truth and getting religious knowledge…When I was seven years old, my mother passed away…My childhood thus ended.” His mother lived a devotional life and he learned from her practical living. She was his first teacher and he copied her good character. His mother played an important role for the preparation of Lalaji’s spiritual growth. It seems like even his mother was selected by destiny - for her good character - so he could be developed from the spiritual side right from the start.

The meeting with a 150 years old saint As Lalaji’s mother had got the blessings form a Kabir panti saint and a Sufi fakir. Likewise her son got the blessings in the same order. Lalaji follow the same destiny and met Swami Brahmananda, a saint of the Kair-panth who was told to be over 150 years old. So in the same order as it already happened with his mother he first met a kabir saint and later he come in contact with a Sufi saint that he adopted as his master. It was Swami Brahmananda that mentioned to Lalaji that there was one greater saint in this area then himself. He was referring to the Sufi Sheikh Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan (q), but did not give his name. This Lalaji found out much later after meting his Sufi Master. These two saints were very close to each other.

The first Hindu Sufi Master Lalaji became the very first Hindu disciple of the Sufi master Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan of the Naqshbandi Sufi order. In his diary Lalaji writes about the very first meeting: “At the very first encounter of my spiritual director, he whispered into my ear, “Your life has been inclined towards the way of truth since long before, for this reason it shall be revealed to you. And you yourself shall relate the truth to others. Relate the truth, relate the secrets of the Divine principle in such a way as to make its transmission and the refuge your sword. Take the help of the shade to create your own display and do not rely on anything but the Pure Essence.” After giving me such a hint, my director did not leave me on my own, but himself acting like a shadow provided me for a period of sixteen years with his inner and outer

attention. He ordered me to keep always apart from the outer tenets of the tariqat (way, path and method), and finally entrusted me with the task of spreading his mission to the people. “ On the 23rd January 1896 Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan took Lalaji completely in his shelter and accepted him as his disciple. And on 11th October 1896, he conferred upon Lalaji full authority to work as a master after only ten months of intensive training after his initiation.

Authorization and approval After some time, Shah Fadl Ahmad Khan called a meeting in which many spiritual heads of difference religions and sect was invited. Shah Fadl Ahmad Khan then presented Lalaji and told the assembled mahatmas:

Shrine Naqshbandi Sheikh Maulana Fazal Ahmad Khan RA “In my entire life, I have prepared only one person. Now these are my last days. It appears to me to be the order of great Masters that I should give dear Puttulal (he used to address Lalaji by this name) the full authorization and appoint him my successor. All of you, who are assembled here are kindly requested to test him and concur in my decision or to reject it.” All who was present were asked to meditate and Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan asked Lalaji to give Tavjjoh (transmission of divine energy) to them and to answer question that may be asked.

Lalaji’s brother Sufi Raghubar Dayal (the grandfather to the mother of Taoshobuddha) who also was invited at the meeting used to say that this session was an extra-ordinary happening. This experience was never repeated again. He has described his experience in detail during this sitting: Initially there was a feeling of happiness, then the thoughts started disappearing and the state of thoughtlessness was there. There was total absorption in this state. Only the remembrance of God was there. All the Masters of the order appeared to be present. Gradually a light appeared and that light alone was visible, not even ones own body. There was no land or sky, they were only surrounded a light. The light appeared to be the real Master and one desired to completely merge with it. Eyes were full of tears and the heart totally melted. One did not desire to come out of this state. This state remained for a long time after Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan asked the meditation to stop. After the sitting some questions was asked to Lalaji and he answered them to all the assembled mahatmas’ delight. All mahatmas approved Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan decision to appoint Lalaji to his successor.

The new era that was prophesize Thus Lalaji carried out the mission upon Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan’s commands faithfully until his last breath. He was the first Sufi master who used the language of the Hindus and won polarity among the Hindu community and later his teaching even spread to the western world. It was a start of a new era that blossomed, but was prophesized long before. It was the wave of Time (Kal – the lord of justice - the director of this creation) that read out loudly from the book of the destiny that was written long before. It was already decided within that this was to happen. A decision was taken from within at the assembly of the saints and now the time was right for it to blossom. When a tree is planted it will definitely bear fruit, if the tree is watered daily. So the outer happening is the fruits of the inner happening. Sheikh Abul Hassan Naseerabadi the Adi Guru (great grand guru) of Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan had foretold the event of initiating a Hindu disciple half a century before. He told to his successor Shah Amad Ali Khan, “Someone from the Hindus will come to enjoy your company…and since they possess the qualities for this task, do not refuse them this incomparable treasure of our spiritual heritage.” However Shah Ahmad Ali Khan could not fulfil his masters instructions, since no right person among the Hindu community came for this purpose. So when Shah Ahmad Ali Khan authorized Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan as his spiritual successor, he told that he had not much time left in this world and therefore he entrusted this task to Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan by the words, “These orders of my Guru could not be fulfilled by me…these will not remain empty words, now they will manifest themselves through

yourself.” The responsibility of granting Hindus access to the order’s spiritual heritage had to wait one generation without having been accomplished by Shah Ahmad Ali Khan to whom it had originally been entrusted. But through the meeting of Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan and Lalaji this prophesy was fulfilled.

The brake of the religious barriers Due to the religious misconceptions even Lalaji himself initially hesitated about his master being only a Muslim. Lalaji wrote, “I considered that great personality, who was in fact free from any bondage of religion and communal feelings, ‘just a Muslim’ because of my worst thinking, “Just a Muslim” – how communal…This entire untrue behavior of mine was unraveled by none other than my wife. I was fortunate that it was she who made me realize my folly… Not only did she save me from sinking, but gave me guidance too. Her silent words seemed to sink into my heart, “Saints do not belong to any cast or any race. They are free from all bondage. …Take me also to that great Saint. I am at your service…A woman’s duty is to follow her husband. Without me, your wish will not fructify.” For this insight Lalaji look up on his wife as one of his teacher. After adopting Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan as his master worldly people complained that Lalaji had not converted to Islam, so once Lalaji asked permission from his master to adopt Islam. Shah Fazal Ahmad Khan told, “You should never think of such an absurd idea. Spirituality does not need following of any particular religion. Spirituality seeks after the truth and self-realization that are the matter of soul, which is the same in every one regardless of outer label of religion one belongs to.” The time was ready for this happening. The seed was planted long before at another level and now the tree had grown ready to bear forth fruit. As the destiny had preordered the happening followed accordingly.

Your inner state is the indicator of truth Your inner state is the real indicator of your spiritual state and, not the outer labels of religion. Spirituality is beyond all these outer labels and rituals. As I already told you in the beginning the labels of the different religions are just labels and nothing more. It says nothing of your inner qualities, whereas your actions, words and thoughts reveal your inner state. Lalaji lived a perfect life and his words were so potent that they affect even the people of today who read it, more then hundred years after. Lalaji told: ‘God has hidden himself inside your hearts and exposed you. Hide yourselves and expose God! This is the real spiritual practice.’ These words are so

simple but so pregnant with meaning. They melted my heart and send me to another dimension the first time I heard them, hundred years after Lalaji uttered these. Lalaji’s birth was foretold and his mastership was predestinated. All the eternal happenings had to flow with the destiny, as foretold. It is an internal happening materialized to the outer. It was already decided within that these barriers of the religion had to fall. The words of Lalaji reveal his inner state but the outer label says nothing about his inner state. The prophecy was an internal happening materialized to the outer. And with the materialization to the outer world the religious barriers was broken and a new era into spirituality ushered. May all of us join together in this eternal celebration.

he word Taoshobuddha comes from three words, ‘tao,’ ‘sho,’ and ‘Buddha’. The word Tao was coined by the Chinese master, Lau Tzu. It means that which is and cannot be put into words. It is unknown and unknowable. It can only be experienced and not expressed in words. Its magnanimity cannot be condensed into finiteness. The word Sho implies, that which is vast like the sky and deep like an oc carries within its womb a treasure. It also means one on whom the existence showers its blessings. And lastly the word Buddha implies the Enlightened One; one who has arrived home. Thus, Taoshobuddha implies one who is existential, on whom the existence showers its blessings and one who has arrived home. The Enlightened One!

ruits are indeed the essence of life vigor.’ This is mystical. To understand this you will have to go deeper into the layers of consciousness. Fruits are energy. Fruits are the manifestation of cosmic harmony, oneness. All along the process of their growth fruits are in total harmony with the cosmos. Fruits are in a subconscious state of awareness. Fruits have feeling, sensitivity, and the way to flow with totality. This is how a man comes into life as a child pulsating with this harmony and vigor. Like the fruits the child is also in subconscious state of awareness. And then his inward journey begins. In this process he goes through various layers of consciousness until he is just conscious. Fruits are the essence of life vigor. As a result I had decided to call this work as ‘Fruits the Essence of Life Vigor’. The title is meaningful in many ways. Indeed it is a blessing that we are together. I am writing and you are reading. This togetherness is oneness. And oneness is blessing.

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their ‘Spotlight on the Home’ series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems. 1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pickme-up that can last for hours. 3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. 4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. 5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phyto chemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

an is a universe within an outer universe. Just like the body of the universe, the human body is composed of cells. These cells are interconnected by an electromagnetic force. This force works through electrolytes present in each cell. Individual human consciousness is a by-product of ego and mind. All States of pain and pleasure exist because of this ego mind combination. It is because of this eternal pair of ego and mind that we have innumerable desires. Man requires tremendous energy to fulfill these desires. Unfulfilled desires cause illness and pain. This requires methods to cure disease and pain. And eating fruits as part of our daily diet is one such thing. Therefore I would like you to pause and introspect why you take fruits, or why fruits be the part of human diet? I give you a few hints: WHY DO YOU EAT FRUITS? 1. 2. 3.

F

ruits are the essence of life vigor. Indeed fruits are. When it was to be decided of the Title Taoshobuddha, just said ‘FRUITS ARE THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR’, and it was HEALTH & TRANSFORMATION SERIES

Page 18

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR suggested to keep this as the title of this work. As an explanation to the reason this is what he said: “‘Fruits are indeed the essence of life vigor.’ This is mystical. And I have told you earlier man is energy man means life. And life is energy. Life is an infinite reservoir of energy. On the shore of time infinite waves go on striking. No end! No beginning! Everything is just in the middle! You are a small insignificant wave. You are an infinitesimal seed of infinite possibilities. Quite naturally, the wave wants to be the ocean. And naturally the seed wants to be the tree. Unless the seed blossoms into a flower, fulfillment is impossible. Man has an insatiable quest to be God. Before this there are many temporary resting points or possibilities. None of these are the Ultimate Outcome. In the night you may stay at many places for rest. Never make these places your permanent resting place. Only God can be your house or the resting place. ‘God’ does not mean a person sitting somewhere, as has been conceived by almost all the religions. God means your ultimate possibility. You cannot attain ultimate fruition unless energy moves in the right direction. What is the ultimate destination? God is the ultimate destination. God is ultimate possibility. HEALTH & TRANSFORMATION SERIES

Page 19

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR

God is formless! Without any name! God is not sitting somewhere. God is your ultimate happening. Beyond which there is nothing and no possibility as well. Beyond which there is nowhere to go. This is the ultimate destination. This is fulfillment! You will remain restless and despondent until you attain to this fruition. You may become rich. You may become very famous. None of these things can ever fulfill you. Somewhere you will continue to feel something missing. No matter how hard you try to forget this, you will never succeed. In a sense it is good that you cannot forget this. Otherwise the seed will miss the opportunity for fruition. Until the seed attains to its fruition and the fragrance merges with the infinite, there is no possibility of fulfillment. Until the river of your life merges with the ocean of life it will not attain any meaning. And until this happens, even if you somehow succeed it will be the greatest failure of your life. For the continuation of this all requires the energy. It is energy that becomes impetus one day for the continuation of journey. This energy comes from a reservoir. Fruits are unfathomable ocean of the existential energy. Consciously you have to bring this energy out of the sub conscious layer and bring it to the surface. And in the process you are embodiment of this energy.’ Therefore, ‘Fruits are the essence of Life Vigor!’”

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and then consuming these.. It is not as easy as you think. It is important to know how and when to eat. What is the correct way of eating fruits? IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let us say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so by the slice of the bread. This is not the way to eat fruits.

Eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! HEALTH & TRANSFORMATION SERIES

he minute the fruit comes in contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil. Taking fruits this way is not the correct

way.

So please take your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You must have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp. When I eat during my meals or after meals stomach bloats up. When I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc. Actually nothing like this will arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. Because when fruit mixes with the putrefying other food it produces gas and as a result you will bloat! When the whole meal rots and ferments it turns into acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil. And you burp, bloat and feel uncomfortable. So please consume your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! There other reasons as well why fruits should be taken on empty stomach. Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes are all common complaints that you face. HEALTH & TRANSFORMATION SERIES

Page 22

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR These will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach. There is a wide spread misconception among us that certain fruits like orange and lemon is acidic. This is misconception again. Remember all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of Beauty, Longevity, Health, Energy, Happiness and Normal weight.

Dr. Herbert Shelton

was a American alternative medicine advocate, author, pacifist, vegetarian, and supporter of raw Foodism and fasting cures. Shelton was nominated by the American Vegetarian Party to run as its candidate for President of the United States in 1956. He saw himself as the champion of original Natural hygiene ideas from the 1830s.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice. Do Not’s of Fruit eating habit: 1. NEVER take juices from the cans. 2. NEVER even drink juice that has been heated up. 3. NEVER eat cooked fruits. Cooking fruits destroys all nutrients. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins. In modern day culinary it has become necessary to use fruit juices as part of cooking.

HEALTH & TRANSFORMATION SERIES

Page 23

FRUITS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE VIGOR It is always better eating a whole fruit than drinking the juice. Drink the juice, mouthful by mouthful or slowly. This way juice mixes with saliva before it enters the digestive canal. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly. This way juice mixes with saliva. Therefore allow the juice to mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can also go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

Go on a 3-day FRUIT FAST. This will cleanse your body. Just eat fruits. And drink fruit juice during the 3 day period. If you cannot meditate listen to relaxing music morning and evening. And you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!
