FOR THE FLEETING MOMENT – Trewitt
PERFORMANCE NOTES For the Fleeting Moment is a thematic technical study for solo vibraphone based on a theme and syncopated accompaniment in 4/4 time. It was written for my wife Katie in celebration of ten years of companionship. It also serves as a reflection on the expeditious nature of life’s own “fleeting moments.” It is my sincere hope that you enjoy working on the piece as much as I did! 1. This piece was written using the Burton grip employed in the traditional jazz setting in which the first and third mallets perform the melodic material. The stickings indicated in the music reflect this approach but are merely suggestions. Ultimately, the performer may utilize the stickings that best suit their technique. 2. The piece is an exercise in independent mallet dampening. It is recommended that the performer study and become comfortable with the concepts explored in Vibraphone Technique: Dampening and Pedaling by David Friedman. A firm technical grasp of these topics will greatly assist in performing this piece. 3. An ‘X’ indication prior to a note instructs the performer to dampen the previous note. Dampened passages should flow smoothly from note to note in a legato manner with no separation, free of extraneous noises or mistimed dampenings. Take special care to allow tied notes to ring on over simultaneously dampened tones, such as in the section at letter E. 4. The opening and closing material should be played without strict time, according to the wishes of the performer. All other sections should be performed as indicated by the given metronome markings.
