President’s Corner Dear friends, The first day of school is just around the corner and, with each passing day, I can feel my excitement growing. Even though I’ve worked over forty-five years in education, I can never sleep the night before the opening of school! It’s that feeling of possibility, of a new beginning, a clean slate, a blank page that is so motivating. Even if you’re not returning to school yourself, there’s no doubt that September is an exciting time of year.
So, to quote the beloved Dr. Seuss, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!”
I hope that you enjoy the changes we have made to our newsletter. While its design may seem different, the focus of IHA News will always be the celebration of the successes of our students and alumnae.

After Catherine O’Toole (Boston College), Student Council president, offered the invocation, Kimberly Caccamo (United States Military Academy), salutatorian, gave a heartfelt welcoming address. Kimberly encouraged her fellow graduates to continue on to college and beyond with compassion for their neighbors and those less fortunate. “We have the intellect to think of new ways to continue serving, and the character to do so,” she said. “This development of our whole person has been the greatest gift IHA has given us.” Commencement speaker, Elizabeth Higgins Clark, IHA Class of 2002, was next to address the graduating class. Ms. Clark’s message to the graduates was similar to Kimberly’s, as she stressed the importance of kindness and good character. “Kindness is a muscle,” she said. “The more you exercise it, the less resistance you will feel.” Diplomas and a number of special awards were then distributed to members of the Class of 2017. Lily Polster (University of Notre Dame), valedictorian, delivered a memorable farewell address based on what became this school year’s theme song, “Sound of the Saints.” As Lily led the class in a reflection of both the challenges and achievements of their four years at IHA, she said, “I hope we all will continue to hear the sound of the saints as we march into our futures as strong, powerful young women, proudly singing ‘Hallelujah, Amen.’”
Lily Polster, Class of 2017 valedictorian, receives her diploma.
The Class of 2017 received more than thirty-seven million dollars in scholarship awards and will be attending some of the most esteemed colleges and universities in the nation—from Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, and Georgetown University, to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Chicago, and College of William and Mary. Sixty-two graduates are attending Catholic institutions and nineteen students will attend colleges in New Jersey. One hundred sixty-two graduates will attend schools out of state, and one is attending ESSEC Business School in France.
Some of the most popular school choices this year include Fordham University with nine students attending, Pennsylvania State University and Seton Hall University with seven each, and University of Delaware and Fairfield University with six each. Other top choices were Villanova University, New York University, Clemson University, University of Alabama, University of Miami, Syracuse University, and Providence College. On behalf of the IHA community, we wish the members of the Class of 2017 the very best in college and beyond. You will always have a home @theheart!

An Inspirational Commencement Address: “Kindness is a Muscle”
W
e were honored to welcome back Elizabeth Higgins Clark, IHA Class of 2002, as our 2017 Commencement Speaker. Elizabeth’s association with Immaculate Heart Academy began well before she was a student here. Her mother, author, Mary Jane Behrends Clark, graduated in 1972, while her aunts, The Honorable Marilyn Clark’68, Carol Higgins Clark’74, Margaret Behrends’75, and Patricia Clark’76, were also IHA graduates. Elizabeth’s great aunt, the late June Clark, is a former IHA faculty member, and her grandmother is renowned author, Mary Higgins Clark, a longtime supporter of our school after whom our Writing Center is named. While a student at IHA, Elizabeth was a member of the Forensics Club,
ITS, CARE, Communication Club, and Mock Trial. She was also a member of the Student Council and played on the IHA Softball Team.
Kindness may not make you rich or win you awards, but its ripples will reach others in ways you can’t even imagine.
–E lizabeth Higgins Clark, IHA Class of 2002
After graduating from IHA, Elizabeth attended Providence College where she received a B.A. degree in English literature and minored in women’s studies. She is an actor who has appeared on shows such as “The Mindy Project” and “Criminal Minds” and on stage at The Williamstown Theatre Festival and La MaMa E.T.C. Elizabeth has written for Maria Shriver’s website and The Huffington Post, with her article about the “R word” making the front page of the entire blog. At fundraisers and genetics counseling facilities, Elizabeth has spoken about her brother, David, who suffers from Fragile X Syndrome. She recently wrote her first play, FRACTURED, which led Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers to call her “lavishly talented.” But her message to the members of the Class of 2017 was not about her success or the careers they may pursue after college. Instead, her focus was simply on the significance of kindness. “Your greatest power lies in the one thing you are in total control of for the balance of your life,” Elizabeth proclaimed to the graduates, “and that is how you choose to treat the people you encounter as you live.” She reiterated that there is no greater legacy than treating people well. “Kindness may not make you rich or win you awards, but its ripples will reach others in ways you can’t even imagine. It’s what the people who actually know you will remember most.”
The Honorable Marilyn C. Clark’68; Patricia Clark’76; Mary Higgins Clark P’68, ’74, ’76, GP’02; Elizabeth Clark’02, 2017 commencement speaker; Mary Jane Behrends Clark’72; and David Clark.
Elizabeth concluded by telling the Class of 2017 that she’s confident they will work hard and achieve. “I have no doubt you’re going to do well,” she said. “But because you’re IHA girls, I also have faith that you’ll take the time to do good.”

did you know THAT... Kelly Murphy’17 (pictured below) received honorable mention in the Bergen County Young Playwright’s Competition for her play, One Truth.
Lauren Costabile’17 recently completed the requirements for her Girl Scouts® Gold Award. Lauren introduced the IHA community to Healing Meals, an organization that enables volunteers to prep and distribute nutritious meals to families affected by cancer, blood disorders, and sickle cell anemia. Healing Meals pairs with The Health Barn Foundation and No Fuss Lunch Kitchen in Hawthorne. Volunteers prep, cook, and package meals that are then delivered to Hackensack University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson. The group uses fresh and organic produce generously donated from Whole Foods Market in Edgewater, Paramus, and Ridgewood. Lauren said she is happy her fellow volunteers could contribute for the greater good. On March 3, 2017, Mrs. Lisa Encke, director of the arts, and Mrs. Mary Carnevale, art teacher, presented at the National Art Education Association Conference in New York City. Their session was entitled “Community Advocacy and Creative Leadership through the National Art Honor Society
(NAHS).” This presentation examined the integral role that the NAHS can play in creating a community of artists in a high school. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the service aspect of the NAHS and the creative leadership potential of its members. Mrs. Encke and Mrs. Carnevale discussed a variety of service projects including hosting Art@theheart for elementary school students, creating artwork for a local Habitat for Humanity gala, organizing a small works auction featuring the NAHS artists’ work, and maintaining an on-going artistic relationship with a local senior residence. Milena Bozovic’17 (pictured below) was awarded a six thousand dollar scholarship from the Steamfitting Industry Scholarship Program. This program awards six students whose parents belong to the New York/New Jersey Area steamfitters union. Milena’s father has been working in the profession for more than ten years. “I mostly feel honored to have been selected as a recipient of a selective scholarship that I hope will serve to encourage me to take on my collegiate studies with the same scholastic aptitude and intellectual enthusiasm that I did high school,” she said. The award will be used toward Milena’s college tuition at American University, where she will be studying international relations.
Immaculate Heart Academy was one of seven schools that maintained a ninety percent or better in overall seatbelt usage during the Fourteenth Annual High School Traffic Safety Challenge at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). IHA tied with Indian Hills High School for the number one spot, having ninety-nine percent seatbelt usage. Additionally, IHA’s safety video was one of three winners in the HUMC Safety Video Challenge. Congratulations to Kathleen Rattazzi’17 for creating “FOMO: Fear of Missing Out,” the video that took the first place award. A five thousand-word article written by Dr. Sue Kenney, English teacher, is being published in a book entitled “Critical Approaches to Literature, Multicultural.” The book, part of a series, is a collection of essays on multicultural approaches to literature and film. The title of the article is “Social Constructions of Otherness in the United States: Four Latin American Examples.” This particular series will be widely distributed in high schools and colleges throughout the country. On May 7, 2017, Julia Giannotta ’17 (pictured at right) won the Carole Ann Cup in the Women’s Varsity Single category of the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association City Championship Regatta. She won the race by less than half of a second—the closest race in which she has ever participated. Julia rows a single boat named the Soaring Eagle at Bergen County Rowing Academy in Leonia and is coached by Clemens Reinke. Collectively, she has won ten medals throughout her career and she recently advanced to U.S. Rowing Nationals in Sarasota, Florida. Julia has been rowing for the past five years and is committed for Division I rowing at the University of Miami. “Rowing is

From June 18-23,
2017, high school teachers from across the country were equipped with approaches that expand the dialogue between the two disciplines and challenge the notion that science and religion are in conflict. Science teachers learned how theological insights can be used to inform topics in biology and physics, while religion teachers explored how scientific findings can help inform and enhance
their appreciation of God’s creation. In addition, participants viewed a presentation of All Creation Gives Praise, in which “theological reflections and astrophysical explanations are blended together in a digital journey through the universe.” IHA faculty members were excited to bring home lesson plans and teaching practices that seamlessly combine the two disciplines.

2017 Service Awards IHA Recognizes Big Hearts of Community Members
A
t Immaculate Heart Academy, service has always been fundamental to who we are as a community. To recognize the efforts of numerous individuals who give back in so many ways, we hold an annual Service Awards Assembly. This year, on May 11, 2017, we acknowledged one hundred nineteen students, ten faculty and staff members, and five families who received the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award. This is the first year we have recognized families with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. It is given to families who have completed a minimum of five hundred hours collectively in one year, with each member contributing at least twenty-five hours. Congratulations to our dedicated families: The Foote Family (1005 hours), The Polster Family (1200 hours), The Rattazzi Family (1000 hours), The Devaney Family (500 hours), and The Szydlik Family (1200 hours).
Additionally, the Spirit of Service Award was given to IHA students whose “very spirit” makes them want to help others. Congratulations to the standouts who innately look for opportunities to serve: Class of 2020: Isabella Sabino and Elizabeth Encke Class of 2019: Gabriella Raia, Bernadette Goratowski, and Clare Donnelly Class of 2018: Marissa Amen and Julia Bertussi Class of 2017: Emily Bermudez, Lauren Foote, and Isabella Somera Two special awards were given to students who continually amaze us with their willingness to serve. “In order to be an institution that works to empower young women to embody the Gospel, we must help them understand the importance of also being women who take care of others and who serve those living on the margins,” Mrs. Sarah Shutrop, director of campus ministry, said. “Recognizing the amazing service done by our girls during the school year in this type of ceremony helps other students to see that it is possible. They can aspire to grow as servant leaders just like their peers.”

Katherine Evans’18 Receives Molly Offer Memorial Scholarship
K
atherine Evans’18 was this year’s recipient of the Molly Offer Memorial Scholarship Award. Every year at the Spring Arts Festival, a student is honored with this award, established by her family to honor their daughter and sister, Mary Ellen Claire Offer. The youngest IHA alumna of five sisters, Molly was a member of the Class of 2006 and passed away on April 6, 2008. It is the intent of the Offer Family that the award is presented to a student who exemplifies the qualities so loved in Molly: a student who loves art and design; has a deep love for family; and is willing to share compassion, spiritual values, and a love of life with everyone she meets.
Katherine is an active member of the National Art Honor Society, of which she is president for the upcoming school year. She also continues to participate in stage crew. Katherine is the daughter of Jessica Napolitan Evans’90, sister of Ashley Evans’15, and niece of Danielle Napolitan Taubman’93. In college, she plans to major in secondary education with focuses in art and theology. “I want to become an art teacher so that I can inspire others and help them to find a voice through their art,” she said. “Through art, I have gained many things, such as confidence and a work ethic that has helped me in many areas of my life, and I want to be able to bring that to others.”

End-of-the-Year and Retirement Celebration Farewell to Rosemary Fuhrman
O
n June 14, 2017, the faculty and staff of Immaculate Heart Academy gathered to celebrate another successful year. At the end-of-theyear reception, held at Ramsey Golf and Country Club, we recognized those who have given numerous years of service to IHA. Congratulations to Mrs. Jo-Ellen DeSanta, English Department chairperson; Mrs. Lori Cellini, mathematics teacher; and Mrs. Rosa Bravo, maintenance staff member, who have all worked at IHA for ten years. Mrs. Kitty Kelly, Guidance Department secretary, was recognized for her twenty-five impressive years of service and Ms. Lynn Gansley, religious studies teacher, has devoted thirty amazing years to Immaculate Heart. Special recognition was given to Ms. Rosemary Fuhrman, assistant principal of academics and instruction, this year’s only retiree. Ms. Fuhrman has worked in many roles at IHA—from a computer, business, accounting, and economics teacher to the Business Department chairperson and
the internal Middle States coordinator. She completed her twenty-one years at IHA as an outstanding member of the administrative team. The dedication she has shown to our school must run in the family. Her two daughters, MaryElizabeth Fuhrman Wren’01 and Lisa Fuhrman’05, are IHA alumnae, and her sister, Elizabeth Walenczyk, is a past Consultative Board member.
Ms. Fuhrman’s two decades of commitment and hard work will not soon be forgotten. She said she is grateful to have worked with administrators and faculty members who possess such a high level of professionalism. “These are some of the best teachers anywhere and they are always looking for new and different ways to help students learn,” she said. “I have truly made many lifelong friendships here.”
Susan Adamo, science teacher, presents Rosemary Fuhrman, assistant principal, a retirement gift from her colleagues and friends.

Service through Science Applied Engineering Students Print Adaptive Device
M
embers of IHA’s Applied Engineering Club have combined their knowledge of 3-D printing with their passion for helping others. This spring, the club members reached out to campers at Camp Acorn in Allendale, a not-forprofit that serves children and adults with disabilities. The IHA students inquired as to how they could assist campers with adaptive devices printed on the school’s 3-D printers.
to Kyle. He was thrilled to receive the amazing tool designed and created by our very own IHA inventors. “This will increase his abilities to help at Camp Acorn,” Emily said. “Now he will be able to learn how to complete other tasks. Kaitlyn and I hope that this project shows girls that STEM can be applied to whatever you are passionate about, even community service!”
Club members met Kyle Demarest, a young man who used to be a camper and now works at Camp Acorn. He was having a difficult time consistently tri-folding a sheet of paper to fit into an envelope. Our students designed and 3-D printed a device to assist Kyle in making the perfect paper crease in a timely manner. Kyle tested out a prototype this spring and club members then made a few last adjustments to adapt it to his needs. On May 31, 2017, Emily Koehne’18, Kaitlyn Brown’19, and Applied Engineering club moderator and teacher, Mrs. Alice Nudelman, delivered the final version of the paper-folding device

Heather Farrell’18 Named 2016-17 Governor’s STEM Scholar
T
o be named a member of the 2016-17 class of the Governor’s STEM Scholars is no small feat, and Heather Farrell’18 discovered that first-hand. When she was accepted to the program her sophomore year, Heather was thrilled to be one of seventy-two students chosen from nearly four hundred applicants throughout the state. The Governor’s STEM Scholars program, offered by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, brings together a diverse group of high school and post-secondary student leaders who are interested in pursuing a STEMrelated major and career. Over the past school year, Heather was introduced to everything New Jersey has to offer across all sectors of STEM—from academia to industry to government. She attended four conferences that covered a wide array of topics such as STEM in government, paleontology, and networking with other STEM experts. Throughout the year, Heather and her team worked on a special research project studying the effects of methamphetamines on the
blood brain barrier. Her group presented the findings to a panel of judges at the Governor’s STEM Scholars graduation on May 6, 2017. “It was a great experience and I feel extremely lucky to have been a Governor’s STEM Scholar,” Heather reflected. “It has exposed me to all the STEM opportunities around the state and has introduced me to many STEM professionals.” Heather, a STEM student at IHA since her freshman year, is also a member of the Junior Academy of Sciences, part of the New York Academy of Sciences. Through this program, she works on research projects by collaborating online with people all over the world. For her first project, Heather partnered with people from Italy, Egypt, and the United Kingdom to monitor radioactivity in the water and its effect on biodiversity. For her second challenge, she worked with individuals from Israel, India, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Nigeria to create an Integrated Ebola Survivor Tracking System.
Tony Cicatiello, president of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, and Heather Farrell’18, 2016-17 Governor’s STEM Scholar
Ms. Geraldine Boland, Heather’s guidance counselor and IHA’s director of guidance, has no doubt she will be successful in whatever STEM field she chooses to pursue. “Heather is a highly motivated young woman who takes every opportunity available to further her education,” Ms. Boland said. “She is outgoing, enthusiastic, and a strong leader who is always more than willing to share her knowledge. Heather is one of those rare young women that you know is destined for great things!”

Art@theheart 2017 Elementary Students Exhibit Work
T
his spring, elementary school artists from the local area were given the opportunity to exhibit their work at Immaculate Heart. One hundred fortyseven students from twelve schools were represented at the 2017 Art@theheart exhibition and competition. The young artists were not only able to participate in a regional exhibition, but they also gained exposure to IHA’s flourishing arts program. At a special reception on May 9, 2017, Mrs. Lisa Encke, director of the arts, welcomed the exhibiting artists and their families by stressing the importance of art in education. “Elliot Eisner, a leader in art education, once said, ‘Art is literacy of the heart,’” she said. “Visual art represents a powerful resource for mental and physical wellbeing. An education that does not include art is incomplete—not only because art is fun, creative, or helps children express themselves, but because overall it is necessary for students’ success.” Members of our National Art Honor Society curated the exhibition and served as judges to recognize three students from each grade level. First place winners were invited to attend an art workshop of their choice at our Summer@theheart program. Thank you to all of the participating schools:

For those who are skeptical, I’ve proven myself to where they said they would trust me in combat. I want to thank IHA for empowering me to do things I didn’t think I could do.” Taylor Gedeon, majoring in environmental studies at Siena College, was recently recognized for her outstanding academic achievement with The Environmental Science, B.A., Major Field Award.
