art prints Autumn 2016 Catalogue
Art Prints Autumn 2016 Catalogue Based in Chennai, India, we’re an independent visual ar ts publisher, looking to push the boundaries of the physical book in an age busy writing its obituary. We also run a print-shop employing over 20 bookmaking ar tisans on a fair-trade basis. They use handmade paper and non-toxic inks to create numbered ar tists’ books as well as ar t prints. Given our long history of working with rich and varied forms of contemporary indigenous ar t, we’ve collected an astonishing variety of images for our books: a number of them have been rendered into signed, limited-edition ar t prints. Affordable for ar t lovers, they provide an extra source of income for our ar tists, as well as suppor t the ar tisans in our print-shop. The ar t traditions we showcase include Gond from Madhya Pradesh, Meena from Rajasthan, Mithila from Bihar, Warli from Maharashtra, and Patachitra from Orissa. A section of prints also features work from other contemporary ar tists who have worked on book projects with us.
The art of the Gond tribal community in central India is dense yet intricate and rich with meaning. The Gonds are one of India’s largest indigenous communities, and ar t is central to their lives. Originally painted on walls and floors, Gond art has since found its way to paper and canvas.
