Art Prints Autumn 2016 Catalogue Based in Chennai, India, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re an independent visual ar ts publisher, looking to push the boundaries of the physical book in an age busy writing its obituary. We also run a print-shop employing over 20 bookmaking ar tisans on a fair-trade basis. They use handmade paper and non-toxic inks to create numbered ar tistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; books as well as ar t prints. Given our long history of working with rich and varied forms of contemporary indigenous ar t, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve collected an astonishing variety of images for our books: a number of them have been rendered into signed, limited-edition ar t prints. Affordable for ar t lovers, they provide an extra source of income for our ar tists, as well as suppor t the ar tisans in our print-shop. The ar t traditions we showcase include Gond from Madhya Pradesh, Meena from Rajasthan, Mithila from Bihar, Warli from Maharashtra, and Patachitra from Orissa. A section of prints also features work from other contemporary ar tists who have worked on book projects with us.

The art of the Gond tribal community in central India is dense yet intricate and rich with meaning. The Gonds are one of Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest indigenous communities, and ar t is central to their lives. Originally painted on walls and floors, Gond art has since found its way to paper and canvas.

Traditionally, it is the women of the Warli community who paint the walls and floors of their home, particularly for special occasions.The walls are washed with cowdung and special mud, and the brushes are made of bamboo. The images are all in white paint, made of lime and a type of chalk.

Colourful, vibrant, yet extremely delicate, Mithila art is primarily done by women living in small rural communities in the state of Bihar. Also known as Madhubani painting, this art form originated from the decorative patterns traced by women on the walls and floors of their homes and community spaces.

cranes My picture-tribute to a well-known fable. A crane visits a shoal of fish living in a pond. He warns them about an impending drought.
